Title: Taito cab knock off W/ Bubble Bobble theme.*Updated March 2nd 2011
Post by: OverRide on July 18, 2010, 11:14:27 pm
This is my first attempt at a scratch build. My plan is to do Bubble Bobble themed art work on a Taito style cab. I built the cab from rough measurements I found on BYOAC and built it around my WG 25" arcade monitor.
I will add hardware info and other specs tomorrow. In the mean time, here are some pics of my progress this weekend.

Hardware Update:
I acquired a nasty Alien Vs Predator cabinet and used the Monitor and JAMMA harness from it. I wanted to build a JAMMA cab just to have the option.

Monitor: WG K7000. Did a cap kit on it.
P4 3GHz 1GB RAM
Video card: ArcadeVGA AGP
J-PAC JAMMA Interface
Windows XP
Frontend: Hyperspin - Maybe MALA

Controls (from Lizard Lick):
This will be two player 2 button 4-way
Sanwa JLW-UM-8 Joystick x2
Happ Comp buttons

Colour Scheme:
Orange cab with white t-molding

Looking good, it looks like you are using french cleats to hang the back?
Title: Re: Taito cab knock off W/ Bubble Bobble theme.
Post by: OverRide on July 18, 2010, 11:37:12 pm
Thanks.
I think it's a crude version of french cleats. The method for hanging the back door I stole from my Nintendo DK cabinet (My next project). I was going to hang the door with a hinge, but I figured doing this to be a lot simpler and in the end it will make the back of the cab more accessible(the 5/8" plywood is light enough to easily lift out not having to pull it to far from the wall). I will use a small latch on the outside at the top to keep it from falling back.

Thanks Gav. Bubble Bobble is by far my favourite game too. It was at a doughnut shop for years, just around the corner from where I grew up. I plan to add some more photos and hardware info updates tonight or tomorrow. I hope to have it playable/testing by the weekend. I am a little nervous about the angled control panel and monitor and comfortability.

I have been a slacker about the updates. All my free time has been spent working on the cab.
Here are some photo updates. Most all are self explanatory. I have since disassembled the guts of the cab and am still trying to come up with a solution for mounting the smoked plexi (See last photo). What I really want is to have the plexi flush with the CP. If I use the solution in the last photo then there would be a 1" piece of wood butted up against the CP and it would make taking the monitor out even harder. Not that this would look bad, i just think it would look better with the plexy flush on the CP. There will be an artwork bezel adhered to the top of the smoke plexy which would hide any screws, allowing me to mount it to a wood frame and then mount the wood frame to the cab, making it removable for easy access to the monitor.
note: There are clamps holding the CP/front door secure. They are just not in any of the photos.

Looking Great!! Good to see another Bubble Bobble fan! Have you thought about artwork?
Check out my bubble bobble machine as well! Link in the footer!

Thanks YoGa. I don't know how I missed your Bubble Bobble machine! That thing is sweet.
I have a few ideas rolling around in my head as to how I will do the artwork. The side will be orange and the t-molding is white. I was thinking some big bubbles with enemy's in them on the sides. I may or may not put the Bubble Bobble logo on the side. And I plan to slightly modify the existing bubble bobble marquee to match my colour scheme.
Not until I see some of it on paper will I know for sure.

Well it's been about 7 months since my last update. I promised myself I wasn't gonna be that guy and leave a dead project thread. Life and delays got in the way. My Wife and I have our first baby coming this month, I had to re-certify for a Cisco Professional exam (lots of studying) and the art work for the cabinet took a few tries for the printer, plus my graphics that I designed in inksacpe needed to be reworked for their in house applications.
Now that I have the artwork in hand, things are back on track.
My preggers wife and I applied the artwork last night to the sides, marquee and bezel.
My next steps are to
Touch up the black paint on the inside of the cabinet. The monitor installation left some scratches.
 Install the t-molding
 Apply control panel/front artwork
 Install hardware
 Play!

Testing out the marquee:

Bezel applied to the smoked plexi with the center carefully cutout:

Side art applied and trimmed. I am very happy with the results:

Had to test out the marquee with the light on :)  (There is small slit on the left side of light getting through. I will have to come up with a way to fix that).

Looks great with that big monitor in there - did you have to modify the original dimensions to get it to fit?  I have an actual Taito and I'm trying to figure out the largest CRT I can squeeze in there without it hanging out of the back...

Thanks!
I built this one from scratch with the 25" monitor in mind (its a tight squeeze). I'm not sure what an original Taito would fit with out modification.

Post by: OverRide on March 03, 2011, 09:00:55 pm
Well, the cabinet is pretty much finished. I have a few odds and ends to finish up, but not more then a couple hours of work max.
Anyways, here is the finished product (note. I will be fixing the the marquee light getting through to the monitor).
Let me know what you think. Not that I can change much at this point.  ;)

Hey OverRide,
Your cabinet looks great. Great idea going with Bubble Bobble theme.
How is it on the wheels, Stable, easy to move when wanted?

Doesn't this generate alot of heat?
I would go for some LED coverted bulbs atleast..

Other than that, pretty cool cabinet!
Also, the car next to it... nice!

I was thinking that as well. I don't want to melt the vinyl of the marquee. I have a fan in the top exhausting the warm air, which is thermally controlled. I will play it by ear though. If the fan is on a lot then I will put in LED's. The lamps came with the cab I gutted for the wiring harness and monitor, made things easy. Plus I do like the warm glow from the incandescent bulbs.

Um,
Since no one has asked... What's the CAR in the background?  Thought it was a Cougar at first but more recent pic looks like a Skylark or something.  Looks to be in great shape, I like the color and vinyl top.  Not to hijack but I've got a '71 Mustang in my garage so I tend to get excited when I see something like that just sitting there and ignored!  ;D

Thanks! It is a 72 Cutlass. 350 4bbl, duals. Pretty much stock otherwise.
It does need paint. It looks nice in photos but up close it shows. The interior is mint as is the engine bay.
Looking forward to spring time to get it back out on the road! Play some bubble bobble then go for a cruze! :P

Wow, thats a great looking cab!  I think Bubble Bobble is an underrated game.  I love playing 2-player.  It aways turns to good natured trash-talking when a player start stealing power-ups the the other one earned.

Thank you! Unfortunately I don't have any official plans.  I built this cab before I was comfortable with software like sketchup so nothing but the artwork is documented. I found some rough dimensions for this type of Taito cab (a search on byoac will garner the same info) and built it around the monitor.

Good luck. PM me if you have any questions you think I can answer.

URL to download art files in various formats. It has been a while, but I think this is all anyone would need to get the art printed.
