Title: Displaying Hi/Lo Shifter in Mame
Post by: iamjimmic on April 26, 2016, 03:46:24 pm
Can anyone advise what I need to do in order to display the Hi/Lo Shifter in Mame 0.172? The game I am trying it with is Outrun.

I've tried enabling/disabling the ini settings of bezels, overlays, backgrounds etc but nothing seems to do it.

Thanks...

In the mame menu go to video options.  Make sure overlays are enabled and for the view select shift-l or shift-r.

Thankyou! It was the shift-l or shift-r that I hadn't set...

Hi,

Thought that I could just use this old thread instead of starting a new one for such a basic question -- how do you hide (other than re-compiling) the shifter display in the latest MAME version (Out-Run, Pole Position, etc.)?

In the Video menu, there's only the option to place it elsewhere, but not to remove it. (?)

Disable overlays in the ini (for all or the game)

What would be the syntax for it these days, please? Tried these all:

nouse_overlays
nooverlay
nouse_overlays 1
nooverlay 1
use_overlays 0

Nothing seems to work.

Highlight "Standard (4:3)" or "Pixel Aspect (8:7)" and hit enter to select that video mode -- the shifter should disappear.

If that doesn't work, you may need to download the current .LAY file (2018-12-15) from Mr. Do's MAME IN-GAME ARTWORK (http://mrdo.mameworld.info/mame_artwork_ingame.php) page.

D/L link for PP2: http://mrdo.mameworld.info/artwork/polepos2.zip (http://mrdo.mameworld.info/artwork/polepos2.zip)

Pole Position was also updated on 2018-12-15.

EDIT: Out Run was updated on 2019-06-30.

This worked, many thanks.

One of the most silly, counter-intuitive things I've faced in MAME; I guess never caring for artwork stuff and whatnot has to do with it, but this should reach MAME dev's ears the sooner the better.

Don't bug the MAME devs about this subject.  :bat   It's got nothing to do with MAME's emulation.

Mr Do's .LAY files define the video modes that appear in the menu.
- He has donated a ton of time and effort to make the art look great and make it easy to use.

It makes sense for anyone who takes the tiny bit of effort required to understand how to select a video mode from the menu.

If you don't like the wording/video modes in the default .LAY fiile, feel free to edit it or make your own file.
