I've been working pretty hard this week to restore my track and field cocktail game.
This picture shows it after I cleaned most of it up. I cleaned the bare wood with bleche-white, then painted it. The top piece you see that is white was stained plywood except for the part under players 3&4 (it was laminated white). I just painted it white to make it look cleaner. The insides were about half painted black and half bare wood, I painted it all black.
You can't really tell in this picture but there are various chips around the edges, and some holes. It wasn't in horrible condition but I like my games to be as nice as possible, within reasonable cost constraints of course.

This is that extension base that is so sought after. :) I will necessarily have to recut wood for the 4 main sides of it because the particle board is so water damaged. I will re-use all the mounting hardware. It will look just like the original when finished but I guess it will only be half original.

A couple of black side panels after wood repair and brand new formica! The speaker grills were repainted silver (not visible in the picture) and the carriage bolts were polished.

Coin door, which appeared to be original, though it doesn't have the big Centuri logo on it like the flyer. It had a few scratches and was dirty. I just disassembled and cleaned it, and gave it a fresh coat of paint. Looks like new unless you really inspect it closely.

Here's a picture of the bottom of a CP. I stripped all the goo and paint from both panels, cleaned and primed them. Eventually I painted them black. Then I realized I needed to paint the tops WHITE with exception of the sides. This is because the white areas on the overlays are just a tiny bit transparent. One of the CP's has black under it, and the white doesn't look quite as bright as the one with white paint under it.
Also stripped and repainted the hinges and carriage bolts, even though these parts are only seen when under the game. The parts were off, might as well.

Here's a pic with new formica on one side of the game. Hopefully I'll be finishing up all the formica tonight, and reassembling it. Yes, the panels are on the wrong side, I just put them on to make sure I had put the hinges back on correctly and to get an idea how it would look when finished.

You can see the screen burn on this tube. We are having a party Friday so I'm rushing to finish this game. I will want to swap the tube with a better one, and get new tempered top glass later. No rush though, as the burn is very hard to see when the game is on, and the glass has no large scratches. I just want to replace them because neither costs much and it will really help make this game shine.

Wade has already provided me with full dimensions of the cabinet including the entire control panel. The drawings are 95% complete and I'll have them on my website early next week. So check back then!

Okay, got both sides fully laminated and reinstalled the repainted carriage bolts. Reassembled more of it. Made a new bezel by tracing the old one, which had a few drinks spilled on it over the years. :) It turned out okay. Previously I thought the glass looked fine, now the glass looks bad compared to the rest of the game. It has no big scratches, but it has little ones all over it. I'll have to order new glass next week.

The side that no one will ever see (not the open part with guts showing, but the woodgrain side that will probably always be against a wall or something else).

As Jakobud said, we are in the process of measuring this game.
Is that Blueprint screen burn?? I wasn't sure, I thought it might have been Mr. Do! Obviously the monitor has been swapped at some point. The picture is just great though, so I would like to just swap the tube, not the whole monitor.
Thanks Paige. As you probably know from some of my previous projects, I'm a big fan of formica or similar laminates. They look great, are durable, are fairly easy to install, and they hide a LOT of flaws! On a woodgrained cabinet like this, it's really the only way to fix the chips and holes.

I've not tried, this,but read it as a tip somewhere...you might try using brasso on the glass to see if you can buff out the smaller scratches. Since you are planning on replacing the glass, you are only out the cost of some brasso (unless you already have some laying around) and some elbow grease if it doesn't work.

You are lucky you can get replacement glass. On my cocktail like that the glass is curved in a slight arch, which of course would make it cost $900 to just get one of them made.

I wouldn't say that I'm lucky, as much as you are unlucky. ;) Truth be told, every cocktail glass I've seen in person has been replaceable. Yours would be the only curved one I've seen! (actually, I'm not even sure I've seen yours, just saw you mention it)
Would it be possible to retrofit a flat glass onto yours? From what I remember from your pics, it looked possible.
After getting this thing reassembled and in my gameroom, it is painfully obvious that I need new glass. I'll have to order it next week, it should make a huge difference.

I actually have one of the smallest and least equipped gamerooms among the guys in my local pinball player's club (we meet once a month at a different member's gameroom). Most of the members are older, and some of them apparently have money to burn! (they have all the expensive, collectible machines!) It's nice to hear positive comments from you guys, being around all these killer gamerooms makes me feel like mine is inadequate!
As far as getting a house or getting a bigger house with a gameroom... When I was in school, I used to say how I wish I was out and making money and able to buy a lot of things that I wanted... Now I say, I wish I was back in school and without a house payment or many expenses! :) Live was a lot simpler then. :)
Will be putting the glass and rest of the molding on the T&F in the next couple of days. More pics to come.

Nope.
For example on a 4 player 100m race, the screen flips and players 3&4 race each other.

Wade - I WISH all I had to do was worry about school. Graduate school isn't quite like is was back in the undergraduate days.... :'(
Anyways, you're gameroom definitely isn't inadequate! Really nicely setup....

I hear ya, I wasn't even thinking about grad students or the ones who are working full time too! When I was in grad school, I hated it because it took up a lot of time and I was working full time. But little did I know how good I had it then too (I was single, had a 1 bedroom apartment, little responsibility, money to burn...) :) Now, I'm glad I did it when I did because I don't think I could do it now.

having just played T&F on my new cocktail cab - i can understand why you want such a great machine. must be great fun with 4 players. good work!

Sadly, this one is no longer part of my gameroom. It went to a good home though! I never played it by myself, but it always got played by visitors - Great party game! After 4 years, I cut it loose in order to have room for games I'm more likely to play alone.
