The game for round #14 is Ms Pac-Man (with speedup hack -- mspacmnf.zip). Chosen by last round's winner, Ginsu Victim.

Rules:

- You can only use mspacmnf, default settings, no cheats. Slow-down button is not allowed.

- Single Credit only.

- Use any mame version or variant you wish.

- Last day is Friday, March 20th (11:59:59pm Eastern Standard Time).

- High score wins (if tied, a tie-breaker game will be chosen at random).

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are optional, but encouraged!

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the screen if playing on a real machine.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition amongst forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

This was requested in the past and never made it to the competition, so now is the time. My apologies to those who don't care for the speedup hack. This is mostly to fulfill a request, so let's just have fun with it.

The winner will receive the Ms Pac-man 4-way stick from www.TornadoTerrys.com (http://www.TornadoTerrys.com/surplus.htm), which has been donated by Terry himself. The winner will get to choose from the colors below. With shipping, it's about $30.

If the winner already has the stick, or would prefer a different prize, Terry has agreed to send them items of the same value from his webstore. THIS PRIZE IS ONLY AVAILABLE TO THOSE IN THE CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES. If you do not live in the country, you only win the glory and the chance to pick the next round's game.

GOOD LUCK!

Ooh, a game I have a chance at. I've gotta get my cabinet finished before the end date. I want to see how well the U360's work with 4-way games.

Damn, I was hoping to see Crystal Castles as the next game, but Ms. Pac is just as good.

Do current high scores count?  I hit 235,000 or in that general area a couple months ago and it is currently showing as my high score.  Haven't been able to get near that lately...

Scores need to be accompanied by a screenshot and should be recorded during the competition period.

Damn, this is going to be a hot one.  A lot of people at this board play this game.

I got 60,000 on my first try, but I'm getting killed by an 8-way stick.  Gonna have to figure something else out.  Maybe I'll set my JLF to 4-way mode and use an adapter.

Yeah, I thought it was sorely missing from the previous threads.

GOOD NEWS, EVERYONE!

I contacted Terry from www.tornadoterrys.com and he said he is willing to donate the Ms Pac-Man 4-way stick and will give the winner their choice of color as well! This stick has been recommended several times on this forum, but hopefully this competition will allow it more exposure, as well as Tornado Terry's, located in Keller, TX near the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

The color choices are:

I live pretty much on the southern border of Oklahoma, so I've thought about heading down there many times because of his eBay auctions. There's almost always a good empty cab on there for a decent price. I always miss out on his MVS systems when they're up. I hold out and hold out, then I screw up and don't bid. I've also sent him emails about problems with his listings and he's cool about it (some people aren't when you tell them they've messed up their info or when you tell them how to list it better).

Already two competitions and I'm thinking I'm not a very good gamer.  30,200 my first try, didn't waste time on a screen grab. :afro:

I'm going to blame the fact that I haven't even settled on a design to build a cab yet, so I'm playing with a 360 gamepad.   :dunno

I have 8 way Happ Comps that I got from Terry so I will have to use a gamepad too have much a chance.

Well, we are trying to follow the most basic Twin Galaxies rules, which that's one of. It's mostly just a holdover from mrclean's Gun.Smoke rules, since Josh found out the hard way that it's single credit only when he submitted his first score to TG.

Yeah I cracked the Gun.Smoke Code so to speak... try putting in "256" credits / coins on Gun.Smoke World set, and play it with wlfmame 106.. you should see 40-50 dragon flies on level one, ea. one that you shoot down is worth 10,000 extra pts. Giving you basically an extra 500,000pts to lead off...Don't ask how many games it took to figure this out. Basically once you see a dragon fly appear on Level 1, every 15 credits / tries another one will get added on the screen. This is an interesting piece of code that capcom put into the game. Here is what i originally thought was a glitch:

Twin Galaxies needed to change the rules on that particular game because of me. Who know's what secrets are still left to be found in these 20+ year old games. TG considered it a cheat, I consider it a miracle I was able to discover it. Oh yeah and BTW I was playing with my foot while holding my camera, and shooting with the other hand.. haha

Wonder Boy has a similar thing.  There are hidden bonuses that reveal E (1000 points), S (2000) points, C (3000 points) and a bonus life in that order.  But it isn't reset between credits, so it's possible to get the higher bonuses early if you play a second credit.

Not quite as dramatic as the Gun Smoke code, but I think there are lots of games with interesting counters like this.  I'm pretty sure Bubble Bobble is another one.
Title: Re: Game Competition #14: Ms Pac-Man (with speedup hack) SPONSORED BY TORNADOTERRYS
Post by: mrclean on March 06, 2009, 12:03:53 pm
Yes I just noticed on my Dedicated Bubble Bobble the same thing that if i start the game up again it remembers the triggers.. and you will start to see items early.. like the potion on level 1 ! which usually is screen drops to trigger it.. but obviously it must carry over from the prior game.

Oh yeah also on the Gun.Smoke Quarter trick... usually but not always normally when you insert a coin it makes a sound.. but on quarter 256.. silence!.. and... 256 is the resolution of the game coincidence?? maybe not.

256 is the memory limit of a lot of old games. Heck, even The Legend of Zelda only allowed 255 rupees. I guess one more would've caused problems.

Memory limits are the cause of kill screens, as well.

If you win, I'll have to see if Terry is willing to ship to Toronto or not. When I made the rules according to what *I* was willing to pay, I said continental US only. Maybe he's willing to ship there, I don't know for sure. When the competition is over, we'll see who the winner is and deal with the issue if it still is one.

ACK!!!   :hissy:

I blame the bat!!!

Using a 4-way/8-way switcher bat, I got 130k, 118k, & then something around 150k (shut off the machine quickly in digust before checking my score...I'm such a brat).

Wow, my middle finger sure hurts after playing for 3 long games.  I really appreciate the ball tops now.  Ow.

Too bad my ball top sticks are 8-way only...

Upping the ante :) 267160. Including both a screengrab and an INP for WolfMAME 106. Would have had alot better score if I hadn't gotten such crappy fruit:
7 Cherries, 10 Strawberries, 8 Oranges, 5 Pretzels, 9 Apples, 2 Pears, 7 Bananas (that one wasn't too bad). First death on board 10, last on board 30.
(BTW: Loved that Pac-Man video with Lily Tomlin. I remember one back in the early 80's where they had an addiction center video on Saturday Night Live trying to break kids of their addiction to Ms. Pac-Man that was pretty good too.)

I do submit scores to TG, but I don't know if I'm considered competing on this title or not. On the regular speed one, my arcade high is about 140K (which really sucks compared to the real Ms Pac players...I can't even get to the slow boards). The high speed one is alot easier, more of a control issue than anything ;D I don't have any scores for Ms Pac on TG though, except for the Championship Edition hack (it was one of their monthly contests awhile back) and I was about 50K shy of the first place score. So whatever you decide I guess...

Whoa, almost missed this competition of one of my favorites!  Wow this proves that I need to check the forums more often.  :)

I posted a couple of scores below, but I see that other people have way higher.  I'll have to take another crack at it.

Also, for those who are wondering if Terry's stick is good or not.  Yes it is.  Terry's product stands apart from the rest because it's a custom Ms. Pac joy that fit's into 3/4" wood panels (shaft is longer).  (Normally you'll see them for metal CP's - and he has those too).

I own one and I posted a mini-review here:

That's good to know it'll fit in a wood panel, because if I get it, that's where it'll go, in my MAME cab :) I've got a former Robotron cab (don't worry, it had been converted to Final Fight, and subsequently gutted before I got it)...it has the standard flip down wood control panel that many of the Williams cabs used during that period.

No Pooyan (at least, I didn't ask, sorry).

So I went down to Tornado Terry's yesterday and all I can say is...I wish it was closer. Very nice place with a good mix of classic and new games, plus pinball, pool tables, air hockey, and redemption games. Got to go in back and see the warehouse. Picked up an awesome condition Global VR Golf cab to MAME for a buddy of mine and got as many parts as we could from Terry while we were there.

Terry is a very nice guy and very accommodating to his customers. He went out of his way to field all of our questions and took time to show us the differences in certain items, plus what makes his custom sticks different from others. For a guy who has been in the business a very long time, he still loves talking about the ins and outs of arcade machines. At no point did he ever come across bored or did he act like he was just repeating something he'd said a thousand times before. He knows his stuff and has cemented the fact that he'll get as much of my business as I can give him.

I may be 31, but I'm thinking in Sept when I turn 32, I'm taking everyone down there for an old school birthday party :)

OK, here's my latest attempt :) 342080, another one with really crappy random fruit.  I tallied up the random fruit again, 12 cherries, 23 strawberries, 15 oranges, 14 pretzels, 9 apples, 11 pears and 7 bananas.  First death on board 28 at 228270, last one on board 53. I played a little more conservatively on the blue ghosts, so I had no deaths until well into the no-blue time boards. Included a screengrab and a zipped INP for WolfMAME 106.

Nice work. Only 7 bananas again. That stinks.

Tell me about it! 23 more boards and I get the same number of bananas  I sure was sick of seeing those 200 pt strawberries.
I had another one that was giving me really sweet fruit, but I only got about 250K, and kept making stupid mistakes (I think I ran into Sue twice as she changed back from being blue, which is why I played more conservatively on the blue time boards on that last one...)

Okay, so where's the next comp? I forgot I'm a sort of moderator in this and would normally pick the next game soon. Unless I missed the thread for the new one, I'll give it till tomorrow night.

Geez, it's barely been 24 hours...maybe some of us have lives ;) (ok...the reason I haven't posted is because I went out of town at a pinball show ;D ) Anyway, I don't know who does the official competition posts, but the game I'd like to choose is Frogger. I guess I'll make a new posting for it.

Ahn-hahn, ya wipper snapper.

Cool. Something classic and not messed with.

Is that a crack at the speedup hack choice?

My original choice was to've been Rastan, only you can point press too much in that game, since there's no timer. It would've been a challenge of "who has more time to waste?".

I only picked what I did because it had been requested a few times and no one else would pick it, plus it tied in well with my prize choice. ;D

Well, that's true. Not a crack, just a reference. Hacks can be fun, but not necessarily choices for comps. Rastan I don't know well enough to point-press, but one can always rule out doing it.
