why do I need a 2nd encoder? I noticed Detroit Love is in Emulation Station. I am using attract mode. but actually both are just front ends to retro arch
Is this a retro arch thing? a pi thing? on a windows PC this is a non issue. any button can be defined in mame. I do not understand what is going on.
why is second encoder needed?

If you have an encoder that shows up as a keyboard, you can assign keys whichever way you want. His encoders show up as joysticks, so it makes sense that he needs two for two-player (simultaneous) games.

Get a keyboard encoder, not a joystick encoder. Don't buy a ching fu mo. Ultimarc makes awesome encoders that just seen a firmware update to swap between modes easily.
