Post by: redketchup on June 22, 2011, 11:00:23 am
Hi Folk

I start a xbox racing cab project, inspired a lot by gbeef (Outrun Cab Salvage and scratch Build).

I choose an old mod xbox to drive the cab
Bought a fanatec speedster 3
Hack the fanatec with happ wheel and pedal
32 lcd sony TV
LEPAI mini amp with sub and two speaker
custom built cab
Sega virtual On seat

Nice!  I'm not surprised GBeef has inspired someone else to build a driving cab his looks great.

Good luck with the build.

Looks good so far!  ;D

In searching for examples of driving cab builds, I came accross this list of 100 good xbox driving games:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=53065.0 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=53065.0)

I was planning on redoing my driving cab with new controls this year,
but you guys are making me want to build a new one from scratch.

I see that list also, but not all the game play well with a steering wheel and pedal, so I have to make choice. I will post a list when all my testing will be done to let you know which one play well with my set up.

Planning also to had nintendo 64 emu to play Cruisin USA, california racing, cruisin worl, San fransisco rush and sanfransisco rush 2049!

Not to try to derail you're nice driving cab you have going on but what are those last two posts?  ^^^

Any more progress?

Not to try to derail you're nice driving cab you have going on but what are those last two posts?  ^^^
Links in my sig might explain some.  When I did my driving cab, it had been a while since anyone had messed with one, mainly because there weren't that many games playable in MAME without some kind of issue.  I made the driving cab info thread in hopes of showing that with other emulators it could be worthwhile.
Not sure that I can claim credit, but there does seem to be more interest in driving cabs around here lately.

I'm envious of the 32" LCD cabs that redketchup and gbeef are building.
I might just have to build a new one after learning from their builds.  :P

redketchup - sorry for going off topic.  please post more build pics!

I take the plunge and disassemble my fanatec speedster 3 wheel. I'm pretty happy because there is enough wiring inside the wheel, to wire my control panel! So i took the PCB and rewire my arcade button with the PCB.

I had problem with my pedal and my A button, when I plug the pedal, the A button stop working, I realize there is 2 pot in the wheel that need to be plug in the PCB for everything working OK. This 2 pot have 2 function. Act like the A button when the pedal is plug, and act like the pedal when the pedal are unplug. So far everything look good. I still wait for Canada Post delivery my 10k pot to finalize the control panel.

I had a bad day today with my project, my wheel stop working.

Last time I test my arcade wheel, I put the potentiometer that come with the xbox wheel and I have it fit with my arcade wheel, everything was working but the wheel turn in the wrong side, turn left and car goes right and vice-versa.

I decided to wait to have my new 10K pot before looking at this.

the pot finally arrived today and I solder a new one like the old one was wiring.... and surprise... nothing work. everything else is working, but no more wheel.

So I put the old pot that i know is working before and still nothing.

I presumed that I probably burn something on the PCB. I have checked my connection couple time, to be sure I didn't forget something, and still nothing.

I will try to find a new xbox wheel and start my control panel again.

Got a new wheel today... Logitech NASCAR wheel for xbox, the best thing about this wheel is that pot seem the same value that the one come with my happ pedal and wheel (5k pot) so it's a direct swap.

Have everything wiring tonight and everything seem to be working.

Finish painting, not so happy with the result, but when it will be squeeze between to pinball, I don't think it will bug me!

Starting to put everything together, and make the first test yesterday with outrun 2,

Sound is good, wheel and pedal work very well, navigation button are perfect, so I'm pretty happy with the result!

Will post pics shortly

That does look really good.  I've been wanting to build a racing cab as well but with a PS2 as the heart.  I've got plenty of racing games for it and would probably build it around the Ford Racing 3 game just because I'm a Ford fan.  But before I do that I need to get a bigger house for a dedicated game room.

That artwork looks great Snaake!

Hi

I'm starting to test some game yesterday, and  I realized that I will probably need the black and white button for some of those... I don't want to do an other controle panel, I will continue my testing and see How many game need it.

I pay 40$ for the wheel assembly with the pot and the mounting bracket, this wheel is built like a tank... I bought a new wheel, because the one I had on the assembly was pretty old and doesn't look good (an other 50$ for a new wheel only)

I had to buy an logitech wheel for the hack on ebay for 20$

Looks good man.  I found a twin set of racing seats similiar to yours on craigslist.  I should have got them.  A racing cab will probably be one of my next projects.  I am with Snaake though.  I was hoping to see more of the side art.

Hi Snaake

It not my fault or the printing guy....

The outrun 3 logo was misplaced and  it doesn't fit. The texte was to big and to far on the right. There was no way I can put it the complete side art on the cab!

It's more like a conception problem, but with detail you have for the conception, i will be surprise if this will fit.

Thank's for the compliment

Gino

I have the itch to build a driving setup too.

I have a question about your 32" monitor - do you find that it is far enough away from you when you play?

I guess it would be easy to figure out the best distance. I play on my 60" TV right now so I could find the best distance for that screen and do some math.

Looks really cool man! Nice job!
Title: Re: My Xbox driving cab (finish!) updated

It's pretty close, but it's really immersive! I like it!
Title: Re: My Xbox driving cab (finish!) updated
Post by: DaredevilDave on January 18, 2017, 02:38:49 pm
Ok cool, thanks. I used to have a 32" in my standup but had a problem with the panel, so ended up with a 27".

I like the smaller screen for things like Galaga, but the 32" was awesome (as you said immersive) for other games, like my own 3D motorcycle stunt game. I mean that game was stunning after seeing it mainly on mobile devices.

I need a bigger house first.
