Title: Need help with my G-LOC Motor Driver Boards / SEGA 400-5117 (SOLVED)
Post by: perjmolsen on December 06, 2018, 02:49:46 am
Hi

I think that in this forum there is someone who might be able to help me (grantspain or princess pin pin)  ;D

My issue is that i have three defective G-LOC Motor Driver Boards / cages.
I have one fully working cage but I need two in order to get the movement working.

I have managed to get all the correct voltages present, but when I test them in my Sega g-loc deluxe there is no movement.
(only movement if i mount the one powersupply that there is working)

The last year i have tried to find out why, but i have not been able to solve the issue, so therefor I reach out to you in my last hope that some one can help me.
I have followed the super guide in a french forum written by the user GC339 here https://www.gamoover.net/Forums/index.php?topic=28660.0 (https://www.gamoover.net/Forums/index.php?topic=28660.0)

Restoration steps 1 to 8 is spot on, so my low voltage power supply is working, but when i need to figure out how to find the error in the control logic (Step 9) I am giving up...
I am willing to ship the cages and all my components for repair and also some money to that person who might be able to help me.

I have uploaded an Excel/Open office file to dropbox, and marked all the components green that i have changed.
Components marked brown i have tested in circuit, and yellow the components i think is related to the logic movement part.
See the tab "Repair log module 3" for all the parts that i have changed/tested on this board.
(also changed all the zener diodes ZD03->ZD11 (because when for two years ago when i successful repaired a driver cage the reason for the missing movement where some bad Zener diodes)

https://www.dropbox.com/s/cajy4szrq1bybzj/Nomenclature.ods?dl=0 (https://www.dropbox.com/s/cajy4szrq1bybzj/Nomenclature.ods?dl=0)

Hopefully someone can guide me in the right direction in what i need to test/change in order to get the final movement part working  :applaud: :applaud:

Note if anyone has restored a Sega Radmobile deluxe - then it is the same PSU/Driver cage.

YES YES YES - Finnaly!! (again) I now have movement!!   :)

ITS ALIVE !!! :)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLg24sFB-rw (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLg24sFB-rw)

I have read CG339's guide over and over... and finnaly i managed to put two and two together :)
in this -> https://www.gamoover.net/Forums/index.php?topic=28406.msg453283#msg453283 (https://www.gamoover.net/Forums/index.php?topic=28406.msg453283#msg453283)  tread where he shows a diagram of the control logic, he mentions PC7,PC8,PC9 and PC10 as components who isolates the high voltage and low voltage...

So i where thinking  ;).. maybe they are dead, and i did not know how to test them so i swaped them with some new

So if you have all the correct volts, checked for burned traces.. but no movement then change
PC7,PC8,PC9,PC10 then you have movement.

I have updated my repair log on module 3 -> https://www.dropbox.com/s/cajy4szrq1bybzj/Nomenclature.ods?dl=0 (https://www.dropbox.com/s/cajy4szrq1bybzj/Nomenclature.ods?dl=0)

If someone needs the service manual for adjusting the pontometers or greasing, then you can get a copy of my manual here:

Hi Dave

ZD3-ZD11 is 16V zener diodes.
ZD1-ZD2 is 13V Zener diodes.

In my repair log document, I have made some notes you can get it here

Hi

On aliexpress I get nearly all my parts.
If you choose aliexpress standard shipping, you normal get your parts whitin 14 days.

When changing the pc910 put in some ic sockets. Then they are easier to change next time.

many thanks :)

im basically just going to order what you changed, but order like 25 of each component as it works out cheaper.
hopefully the other lots are easy to find too :) im close to farnells so can order resistors and what not there
i have a huge selection of caps at my disposal im im always recapping monitors at work, we have over 300 machines on site :)
keeps me busy :)

on a side note, the motor, if it was this that blew the board, how can i test it before connecting it all back up ?
i tested the motor board with my light bulb in the output power connector, not a sausage, but then again i do have lots of burnt tracks :-\
i have 2 of the 4 sections blown on my board, so will need to strip the sections down and basically shotgun all 4 with new components :) just to be safe :)

thanks

Hi Dave

Yes, I always also order a load of components, then if it breaks again I have the parts needed.  ;D
(see picture below) :o

I think that the component that broke your board is one or more of the big diodes on the H bridge. (D20 to D27)
So before powering it up, pull them out and test them, I have repaired four of those PSU's and on them all it where one or two of the diodes that had blown.
Also remember to check the mylar insulator behind the diodes for small holes, better replace them all.

I got my diodes  from alibaba.com, I could not find them on ebay or aliexpress.
(S20LCA20/S20LC40) maybe S20LC20U if you have theSEGA 400-5117Y version

I THNIK that it is caused because they get hot, so on my PSU I have replaced all the insulators, and also added small heat fins also, the heat fins (see picture below).
So far the two psu's are running without any issues. :applaud:
I think that the diodes blow up because they burn thru/or the insulator get old, so they short out on the bridge.

I you are so unlucky that one of your L2 transformers are bad, then let me know.
I got some new one made in china, and I have before helped one in Australia with a new L2 transformer.(see picture below)

When I checked my motors, I just pulled out the motor brushes and looked if they where fine, and they where.

When I repaired my PSU's I followed GC339's guide step by step.
I also replaced ALL the electrolytic caps, because if just one are bad it can give some stange faults, and they are cheap and easy to replace.

I Hope that you get your PSU's and G-loc running again ;D Just write if I can help I will

Kind regards

i dont mind shotgunning if it gets this board back up and running

EDIT3
IC02   TA7538P<<<<<ahh u miss typed :) component check with eye.exe says its TA75358P  ;)
TR1   T10ABG-----I cant seem to find on ali express mate, any ideas ?

EDIT4

Hi Dave

Diode D04-D08
S118 is a 1N4148 diode.   :)

---
IC02 is a TA75358P  :D
---

TR1 can be replaced wit a BT138-600E I have forgot to put that into my repair sheet.

---

The cooling fins I have attached to the big diodes D20 - D27 with the screws that normal holds them to the bracket, I have just put in some longer screws.
From the bracket I have put in a new mylar, then the diode, added some cooling paste on the diode and then the cooling fin.
You can get a set of 10 mylar and 10 cooling fins here

Super

Make some repair notes, and take pictures, if you descover anything that later might be useful
Then make a small repair log - I LOVE to read repair logs !

Maybe you can find some information that you can use in my logs of reparing my driver boards

Hello!
I'm Alex, from Barcelona, Spain. I recently got a G-Loc deluxe, but it is in very bad shape. I am carefully following your repair, amazing job! Congratulations. I am working on getting the images to reproduce the stickers (red warnings and GLOC's own), but it is almost impossible. Could you tell me how to get them? I am also looking for the service manual, but another mission almost impossible.

I try to download your file from dropbox, but it´s removed. Can you share again the file please? Thanks in advance!!
