It's about time someone picked a game with some funky music.

I used to flip the Atari 2600 version. I'll have to see how I do on the arcade one!

Nice. I just got a Moon Patrol a couple of weeks ago, so I guess it is time to get out to the garage and start playing. Fun game, but I never have been very good at it.

Finally a game I like. Actually, just last night I played it in the first in months I think. Premonition?

Here's a beginning score. My best to date.

That's about where I make it too, although I can get to the part where you start to go uphill (I think it's around J on the Championship course). There's some wicked boulder spacing and I've only been able to pass that area once (using continues, on a real cab)

Squeaked past on my 2nd try.  I can do better after I memorize the places where there are annoying hole/rock/tank arrangements.

72,180.

Don't have the exact score, but I think it was 87K. Was playing on a real cab yesterday, and I don't know if the settings are the same. Started with 5 men, got 1 at 10K, 1 at 50K. As luck would have it, got to J on the Championship Course (the one I mentioned I couldn't pass)....had 5 men at that point, lost all 5 :(

I'm almost 100% sure that I didn't change my default settings, & I'm starting with 3 rovers, not 5.

Thanks,
-Jason

My settings show 3 lives and bonus lives at 10k, 30k & 50k.

OK, won't count a score then ;) I wish you guys would list the settings when you make a thread for a new competition...sometimes the default settings change between versions of MAME too. Unfortunately, I can't change the settings of the machine, it's at the Midwest Gaming Classic and not mine. I think I may be able to pass those boulders after "J" now though, so look out! ;D

This is a good idea to put in, instead of just saying default.
So we know we're all playing with same amount of lives and extra lives.

For Moon Patrol it would be -
Quote
3 lives and bonus lives at 10k, 30k & 50k.

Thanks! If you look back, you'll notice the couple ones I started, I did include the settings :) Also helps with those playing on a real machine, since they might not be able to know what default is (not every manufacturer specified that). That being said, I tried that Moon Patrol cab a couple more times yesterday, but kept screwing up early and quit...got too frustrated ;)

Finally got a little farther, past the uphill boulders after J. You get closely spaced landmines at the top and man are they a pain. Ended up at M on Championship Course with 85080 (with the correct settings ;D )

I may not get good enough to even take a pic. I played a couple of games yesterday and only got to 24k. :)

Um...is there a secret button to start this?  I am using .138 and nothing happens after the RAM / ROM check screen.

You didn't install the secret button in your cab?  :duckhunt

There are no rom/ram checks. The game just starts up.

I find double-tapping, like in DK, is helpful. Sometimes paranioically. Which isn't enough in some circumstances. This path from E to J is crazy. Going against form, I played it through a few times. It's been so long since I've been to this spot, I'd forgotten about it. It sure requires some fancy moving, and the right pace. I think I finished it, though. The next leg was just too intense.

I have to say, though, that this version of MAME32 was giving me the hardest games I've played in a long while.

Fudge, on my last try, I aced the beginner course with no losses, but then I lost 3-4 rovers right in a row at the same spot where there were a few holes & lots of spaceships above--usually that part is cake.  Fudge...

The second half of the championship course is nearly impossible. It's like they anticipated the homogenous sequentiality of late 80s side scrollers. Totally ruins the game.

Upping the ante a bit :) 89,930 (so close to 90K!) I tried to get a snapshot with "game over" on the screen, but was a tad late. So this is during the demo mode.

I didn't have time to take a pic, but I finally made it through the beginner level for the first time today. I ended up at 53,something. I am hoping to get a few hours to play Tuesday or Wednesday. I think with a little practice, I might be able to get a little higher.

Finally got to play a bit yesterday and can now get passed the mine field level and into the 30,000+ scores so may get lucky before the deadline is here.

update: 27K is my highest so far.
