As requested in the last competition thread, the next high score competition is Raiden!

"In the year 2090, Earth has suddenly become the target of deranged aliens. Following the invasion, a new cutting-edge weapon, the Raiden Supersonic Attack Fighter, based on the destroyed alien craft, is created for humanity's hope for survival."

230K... It's 4am.

I've seem 2M+ scores on the real thing before. I hate Raiden's bosses - have a heck of a time figuring out the pattern to avoid death...

edit - sorry for the black sidebars - haven't rotated my monitor yet. :-[

Any big tips other than pattern recognition?
Title: Re: High Score Competition # 58: Raiden

My tip is to not worry about keeping concentrated fire on the big bosses. Just dodge the bullets and eventually they'll die. You have to keep shooting, but put more effort into dodging shots than putting fire into the dead center of the boss. Shoot the side attachments first if you can - the side guns are annoying and can make dodging more difficult.

Also, do not be afraid to drop bombs! Don't use them if you don't need to, but if you're in a situation where it's drop a bomb or fly through a hail of shots that you might not make it through - nuke 'em! it's better to lose a bomb than a life. I can't begin to count the number of times I've seen people get shot down when they should have dropped a bomb - you can't save them, if you die, the bombs don't roll over.

Not a record-breaker, but a good score for me. I seem to do a little better with the laser, although later into the second board its boss (which I almost beat) might call for spread fire.

~120K after many tries, and the first 2 boss tanks get me every time! And the bombs as a last resort suck!. From the time I relase it to the time it lands and explodes I'm dead.

To get past the first boss, stay put a lot, and like said above keep firing while avoiding the main fire of the first tank. You'll keep out of sight of the second one, and it won't fire at you. (Now and then a small tank will pop up out of the bottom, so watch out for that.) The first one will be gone, and then do the same thing with the second one. Pretty easy to finish without using bombs.

The 2nd boss got me killed... I faced him the first time ever and held out quite long.
Pretty sure he was almost dead but sadly he got me before I got him.

As you can see I did try quite a few times.
Still trying and not tired yet. :P

I find it best to sit all the way on the bottom at the end of the first level. You can much more accurately move in two directions than four top slip between the fire. The first level you defintely want to get through without using bombs, because it's good for an extra 40-50 thousand points  :)

Having said that, I haven't been going so well  :(

Looking at your screenshot, your current score is: 67380.
How can we tell the 293310 score does obey the rule:

Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).

This is not an attack to ArcadeNerd or something, just wondering.

Thaevil1:  good point, but we've been using the honor system for these competitions & have often submitted scores from the high score screen instead of from the actual "Game Over" screen.

I know that, for me, my keyboard is pretty well buried in my cabinet, & I don't like to pull it out to hit F12 every time that I beat my old score.  I'll wait a few days or wait until somebody beats my score & then take a screen grab of the high scores list.

That's good enough for me.  Others, feel free to chime in if you're concerned about this topic.  If this is a concern, we'll have to add another sentence to the first post boiler plate text to specify conditions under which a screen grab needs to be taken.

Thanks,
-Jason

I had four days off and should have been hammering this every day. But I've just discovered MaLa so I've spent a lot of late nights working on that. Still, I think I'm getting a rhythm to it. This is about the best I've ever had. No way I can catch Jason, but Maybe I can try for second place (",)

Also, I'm not worried about cheaters - although, I lament for those who don't have F12 mapped or sub-mapped on their panels.

I have been playing *A LOT*.  I think this game has brought back a hint of my tennis elbow that I got rid of last year (no fooling).  Lots of swearing, lots of pounding the control panel, some pain in my right hand...it didn't come easily!

Hey, I should learn to use the WolfMAME INP function sometime & submit scores to Twin Galaxies--I'd be #3!  =O  http://www.twingalaxies.com/index.aspx?c=22&pi=46&gi=2821&vi=10030 (http://www.twingalaxies.com/index.aspx?c=22&pi=46&gi=2821&vi=10030)

Comments, tips, tricks:

1 - On level 1, if you keep the red bullets from the 1st power-up, you'll get to shoot 4 instead of 3 big airships--good for almost 1000 points.

2 - On level 1, find the 10,000-point fairy in the tree.

3 - On level 1, get ON TOP OF the tank bosses while they're shooting their diagonal shots.  Get off them when they shoot the ring of bullets & the aimed stream.  It seems that your missiles shoot after the previous set of missiles leaves the screen or hits a target, so you can do much more damage much faster.

4 - Save your bombs & get all the medals.  You should get a 44,000 bonus at the end of level 1 if you get all medals & use no bombs.  You should have 79k-86k points when starting the level 1 tank bosses if you've shot everything.

5 - Memorize memorize memorize.  I've got the 1st 2 levels memorized now.  It's routine & I know where everything will appear.

6 - Shoot the fast 10,000 point car on the horizontal bridge in level 2.  It zooms from right to left & doesn't take too much damage to kill it.  I'm not sure what makes it come out--it's not always there.  ANYBODY KNOW?

7 - Same for the little blue men instead of medals--you get 3k for them instead of .5k for the medals, & they still count for a medal when calculating your bonus at the end of the level.  I'm not sure what makes these guys come out--they seem random.  ANYBODY KNOW?

8 - I used to use the blue laser on level 1 to kill the tank bosses faster, & then I'd switch to the red shotgun for level 2, since level 2 has so many enemies swarming you from all over, but then I got better at level 1 & now stick with the red shotgun powerups all the way through levels 1 & 2.  Remember, when you switch weapons, you don't increase them by 1 level.  (Hmmm, maybe I should switch to blue laser at the end of level 2--I hardly ever get through level 2 without dying...).

9 - I can't cope w/ the level 2 boss' sweeping spray of bullets after you shoot off all of his little planes that swarm you.  You can be a chicken & hide above him & shoot the occasional homing missile at him, but that doesn't do much damage.  On one attempt, he ended up flying away after getting bored with me--I got no end level bonus, but at least I didn't die...  ANY STRATEGY ON AVOIDING THE SWEEPS OF BULLETS?

10 - The little airplanes will disappear permanently if you scroll off the side of the screen.  Nothing can shoot you from off-screen, but they can certainly shoot you sneakily from a corner very shortly after they appear on-screen.  Handy in the first part of level 3, where there are tanks on the far left & right sides of the docks--you can essentially keep 1 side off-screen if you want to play it safe.  Tanks & tank boats have turrets that have to be pointing at you to shoot you--so keep moving!

11 - I avoid using the homing missiles--they're slow, they get confused if you shoot an item that they're homing in on, they disappear if they leave the screen, & they're weak--about all they're good for is killing the wimpy basic 150-point planes.

That's all that comes to mind at the moment.  Good luck!

-Jason

Sorry, I have been too busy and not had a chance to post since my score.  If you have questions on its legitimacy I did get the high score in Twin Cobra (and jasonbar was second) so I can handle myself in a shmup.  I do not have f12 bound and no longer have a keyboard in my machine.  Next score I post (hopefully somewhere near jason's) I will be SURE to get the high score screen and not just the score in the middle so that no one can question it.  That day I had a good run followed by 2 seriously crappy runs so I took a picture in frustration and quit out before breaking something.

That's a dang fine score there jasonbar.  I figured you had been playing A LOT to get that.  So many runs are looking great until a random bullet from the flank can reduce them to garbage.  I will have 2 days to try to catch you.  I doubt I can though.  It does take a crap load of memorization but then you also have to sprinkle on some luck.  Okay, a lot of luck helps.  Bullets are so fast.... your ship, not so fast....  These shmups are defiantly a different breed than the bullet hell shmups out now.  A lot more frustrating and less forgiving for sure.

The 'off-screen' tactic mentioned I hadn't thought about in general, but I use it to do in the first bosses. Keeping to the left keeps some of the right boss's fire off of you. You just have to worry about the errant tank that comes up now and then to pop at you. Avoiding each super tank's fire isn't hard. The pattern is the same, and you just have to sit in between shot lines.

Funny that you can hide above the second boss. Most games don't allow you to do that.

No decent attempts lately. I may be past my prime on this game....

I guess it's over.  I loves me my shmups--can't get enough of them!  Actually, I guess I can...I tried continuing my Raiden game to see the later levels & just couldn't get much farther on my own--I'd need to keep swapping players to prevent the game from putting me back a little bit after I lost all of my lives.  It's just not fun after a while, continuing your game with a pea-shooter only to die right away & then continue again...

Anyway, I'll be posting a new game competition shortly--nothing that requires pounding the dickens out of a fire button this time!

1st place: jasonbar
2nd place: Gray_Area

Thanks,
-Jason

I love me some shmups as well.  I only wish this one had come at a time I could play more.  Sorry I couldn't give you more competition on this one... :-[  Maybe I'll hit it up when I have some more time just to see if I can pass the second level without dying.  Nice score jasonbar.
