Title: Completed!!! Chrono stick, a X-Mass gift for Bro.
Post by: Locke141 on December 11, 2014, 02:19:36 am
:droid MERRY CHRISTMAS ANDREW. :droid
Subject has been changed to reflect the new name.

Here's the finished product.

Original first post is below.

My younger brother loved my last two builds so I am making him a fight stick for Christmas. Because I live in East Africa and he is in New York, he will only be getting a link to this build on Christmas day. The stick will hitch a ride to him on a later date.

Where I'm at

As of this post the joy stick, box, and encoder are all separate pieces. I wanted to get some feed back before I glue it all together. Laser cutting a new CP is definitely an option as it cost me next to nothing to do and takes about 2-3 min.

The blue plexi is a templet that I won't be hart broken if it gets scratched while fitting. The final version is clear and will have white plane paper under it or some graphics. Right now I think I like the plane look and he can always add some art later.

Pleas let me know what you think.

I dig the transparent top but the wood under the joystick plate isn't doing it for me. I looked up some cast acrylic cubes from tapp and....  :o they're costly. How thick is the plexi top you've got there? If it's 1/4, maybe you could mount through with carriage bolts?

Louis Tully, I kind of like the transparent look as well. I thought of 3D printing some cool looking brackets, like Donkey Kong holding up the joy stick for a shadow box look. But for this build I want to keep it simple.

The yellow bit of plexi off to the side in the above photo, will go under some white paper or graphic and the clear piece of plexi will go on top.

Here are some pics of everything placed together but nothing is glued in place yet.

Does any one think the buttons are to high up? It feels fine but I think I could lower them a bit for a better look, with out sacrificing game play.

aesthetically  they look too high, but functionally they are fine.  plenty of room for the palms to rest.

You should totally get some art printed up for it though.

My brother loves Chrono Trigger and I thought about using the box art but it doesn't have the fight stick feel. I really like the look of theMarvel VS Capcom games but of all the Marvel VS (filling the blank) projects I have seen I've never seen any art I loved.

Things my brother likes that may make for some good art

Chrono Trigger is the best.

quick and schloppy

Hmmm, Yes thats it.

Can you send a link to where you found this pic? I want to get it printed on photo paper in the highest resolution possible.
Never mind I found it and some other options he might like. I may get two or three printed to try them out.

I like. I don't get the lay out but it looks cool.

Here's some sample CP art I made. The white dots are just so I can see whats going to be cut out. I'll print two with the dots layers removed.

Pleas let me know what you think.

Thanks Louis Tully.

Magus is my brothers favorite character.

Classically classy.

I'd go with the first one as a) is looks good and b) the color of the ground in the art fits the color of the wood.

The first one is for sure but I am thinking about printing the other two as well. I'll see how much each print will run me tomorrow.

I never made it very far in Chrono Trigger, life has always gotten in the way. The funny thing is I love all the old square soft RPG's, must have played through FFVI about 6 plus times. I just never had the time to give to Chrono Trigger.  This build has inspired me so just started playing it again. Hopefully I'll be able to make it to one of the endings this time around.

Good work! I like the layout and definitely go with the background LT came up with.

FFVI is also an excellent game. Chrono Trigger and FFVI are about where Squaresoft hit its apex. Too bad there is very little excellent FFVI art out there. Was never of fan of the concept art, and the re-release didn't add much.

Evangelion, since you mentioned it earlier, has a ton of awesome art. Would be a safe bet for art as well. Otherwise, I agree, the Lavos image Louis came up with would be great.

+1

The final fantasy (FF) franchise  was riding high from FFIV (4) to FFIX (9). After 9 Hironobu Sakaguchi (the creator of the franchise) left Square and the FF games have never had the same level of quality.

By the way FFIX IX is available on the Playstation network. My favorite game of all time is still FFVI and or FFVII. Still, FFIX is an excellent game that rarely gets the love it deserves. It is also Sakaguchi's favorite in the franchise.

Hopefully I'll get to go to the printers today and finish this build. Making a fight stick it so much fun and quick, there may be an FF themed build in the near future.

Back from the printers,

I had them print my top two favorites. I'll hide one under the other so he can decide for him self.

Have a look.

I also glued down the joystick & encoder mounts. Now I just need to let the glue dry, drill and screw the plexi in place (with the art safely aside), and wire it all up.

Finished!!!

Under the hood.

Some testing on Chrono Trigger.

And one with the CP in focus.

Thanks to everyone for your feed back and input. A special thanks to Louis Tully for suggesting the wall paper I used to make the art.

Pleas feel free to let me know what you think.

Looks great, I honestly am leaning towards the character one now. I like the way the C arcs around the joystick. Probably would want a clear dust washer for it though.

I'd trust that fight stick when going against Lavos and his titty guns.  ;D

The character one is under the one you can see on top. I had to actually do some work on that one in photoshop. My brother can switch them if he likes.
