Title: Workshop 2.0 WIP
Post by: Mike A on June 04, 2020, 03:26:41 am
Over the last 3 years my basement has developed a flooding problem. I tried a bunch of ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- to fix it and failed.

This year has been the worst so far. After the first round of thunderstorms half my basement flooded and the water would not recede. My sump pump ran 24/7 and I was vacuuming up 100+ gallons of water a night.

I looked up drastic measures on the internet. I saw an effective system was to trench around the interior perimeter of your basement and install drain tile.

Awesome. Demolition. My specialty.

I started doing the math and I determined that a 16 inch trench through 5 inches of concrete over 180 linear feet, AND 40 feet of drain pipe buried outside my house was too much work for me and a friend or two.

Time to hire professionals.

Trench

New sump pit. 2 24 inch basins tied together. New pump and a backup pump.

New concrete poured.

They also installed drains tied into the new system in all 4 of my window wells.

There is a channel around the entire perimeter of the basement that will catch water from cracks that develop in the basement walls.

Done in 3 days.

Now the new shop will begin to take shape. More posts will follow as things develop.

First I have to wait a day or two longer for the concrete to cure.

Phase 1 was completed before the drain tile installation.

I ran 3 x 20 amp circuits along the length of my basement.

There are two lines of outlets every ten feet on the ceiling.

The third line runs outlets every ten feet along one wall.

I have 2 x 30 amp 220 circuits running into the new wood shop area.

The wood shop will be 27' x 27'

It will be walled off from the rest of the basement.

More to follow in a day or two.

Ugh I've gotta put in more drainage around my workshop (it's in a building outside).  Normally we get a little bit of flooding in the spring but this year it's been practically underwater.  I had the good sense to build it on cinderblocks, but that doesn't help me actually wade through the water to get in.  Mine's tiny though... only 12x12.

Everyone I know with a basement can’t talk for 5 seconds about it without mentioning the last time it flooded.  They are not new technology, but this problem seems insurmountable.  Yet people keep building them.

We used to never have any natural disaster issues, but the ground is super saturated right now.  If it rains any more I might turn my back yard into a Koi pond.

Owned my house since 93'  - Zero floods.

The buildings that have flooded basements are typically older and were built before they put better codes in place.  Now they measure the highest water level and your basement has to be 2-3' above it.  Or better - they basement is put in with proper drainage to begin with and there is never an issue.  The just didn't do that in the old days.  There are many MANY houses with finished basements that haven't got water in them..   They are just normally newer buildings.

I prefer the space - how all you people live on slabs is weird..

Should be fine.

Having a decent pump that can handle the head (giggidy) is prob the hardest part.

I did a similar amount of trenching on a house in 1992 and paid about $3,500. What's it cost now? You were smart not to do it. In '92, I had more time than money and seriously considered trying to do it, but after seeing the amount of material they pulled out of the house and the number of folks they had to do it - it would've been a mistake for me to do it. It was rock solid and fixed my basement water issues. The house sold recently and it's been dry the entire time

The guys that did mine, didn't do as well matching up the concrete as yours. It was messy, so you got that going for you.

What's both pits for? It looks like you have 2 lines going out? I assume there is a backup sump in there or something? One of my Carona projects was to setup my backup sump. I have it exiting out of the house and not tied into the sewer at all and it's battery powered. I don't think I need it, but it gives me piece of mind. The battery backup unit was about $100 and another $100 for a deep cycle battery.

Also, these are great: https://www.amazon.com/Water-Alarm-Electronic-Detector-Detects/dp/B072XVW44W

The two pits are tied together. That way the pump cycles less often.

Yes there is a backup as well.

Demoing houses for the past 15+ years I have seen some weird ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.  Building codes have definitely come a long way to help the home owner.  I don't remember there being drains when my parents built their old house in '90.  But in my house now that was built in 2010 contains three floor drains that feed directly into the sump pump.

I did this in my basement.
Except, my basement walls are stone and my floor was dirt.
I dug the dirt out by hand and wheelbarrow'd it out the back.

put in drain tile and filled the whole thing with stone and cement.
It has a 7ft ceiling (slightly less at the beam) but i'm 5'8" so not worried about banging my head.

I was in my early 30's, though. took the week off and literally lost a whole pant size when I was done.

Also, jelly of anyone with a basement that isn't freezing cold in the winter and has wet floors in the warmer months.

This is going to be awesome.  27’x27’ is a huge space.

I waterproofed as well.  My house is coming up on 100 years old.  Partial stone walls, brick, etc.  When we put an addition on, part of the deal was to dig the 6’ ceilings down to 8.5’ and waterproof the entire basement.

We ended up with the French drain on the inside and 2 sump pumps plus a backup as well as waterproofing the outside of the foundation.  We dug all the way down and installed a double membrane on the outside that sticks up about 1’ from ground level.  There is also piping that gets pumped out to the street.

It’s been bone dry ever since going on 8 years.  We used to have standing water down there every time it rained.

I still remember like it was yesterday.... you agonizing about moving vs adding on.... you lured us in with your promise of an underground arcade and then what happened? Javery?! THEN WHAT HAPPENED?! You barely have room for your arcade games because you built an awesome theater.

Who the hell needs a theater these days? Throw a flat screen and sound bar on the wall and done. I don't think movies are even shot to be seen in theaters anymore.  Not like any of us look up from our phone long enough to pay attention anyway.

Ha!  Yeah - time is FLYING.  My oldest, who I built my first ever cabinet for, is about to turn 16.  It's crazy.

No regrets on the theater - we use it every single night.  TV, video games and, of course, movies.  We do family movies some nights, date night for just the two if us some nights, kids (used to) have friends over and everything in between.  It still has the wow factor and we still really enjoy it.  I still need to figure out how the equipment works though!  I calibrated the receiver with the microphone that came with it and that's it!

disney+ is selling live action Mulan later this month instead of showing in theaters.
I expect the Black widow movie will end up the same because putting this option in place for one movie doesn't make sense.

i'd pay $40 or $50 to just be able to watch it at home on opening night.
costs me about $100 to take my two kids to see a movie at the theater and then the youngest ALWAYS needs to pee 3/4 of the way through so I always end up missing something good.
My kids would rather watch a movie on the projector outside in the summer anyways.

i'm really not surprised considering the social distancing.
They need to make money for their movies and can't do that if people can't go to theaters or if they can't pack theaters.

but back on the topic of wet basements.

I ended up just digging down by hand where the majority of my water problem is with the basement.
It's where the stone foundation and the concrete addition meet.
looked like they didn't clean the stone wall enough when they put down the forms and there was a roughly 2" gap about a foot long starting a foot below the surface.
i'm guessing it was dirt and got washed out over the yrs.
Packed it with hydraulic cement and no water there after the latest rainfalls!

I still get some trickles here and there in other parts but not anything like the standing water 1/4 to 2" i used to get in that location.

So i've reconsidered using my basement as a workshop for my 3d printers and other projects instead of my dining room.

I need to seal the tops of the rubble foundation with either mortar or great stuff and then insulate the sills because that is where 90% of the cold air comes in.
it's like a breeze in the winter.

then I need to insulate the sills somehow.
Might just box them in and hand fill with cellulose blown in stuff you get for the attic.

not interested in finishing it or using it as living space.

I'm not sure surprising is the right word.  If you are surprised that a corporation tries to squeeze as much money out of you as possible then you haven't been paying attention.  I think outraged is the better word.  The bulk of your high ticket price is supposed to go to the individual theatres to keep local businesses running.  Now that theatre chains are digital the only thing Disney or any of the big studios have in sending out a film is having a server system fat enough to send those films out.  By charging an additional fee Disney is essentially trying to rob theatre chains of their profit and see if they can make more money via running the middle man out of business.  Personally I'm kind of done with both institutions, but if you like theatres don't pay the high prices for immediate release during quarantine.... if the big studios figure out they can circumvent theatre chains they will, and that'll be the beginning of the end.

Actually, most of my time in the summer is spent drinking and grilling by the pool. Or drinking and sitting on my deck.

I am in the process of installing a new audio system in my shop. I have 2 speakers mounted so far.

I have a home theater amp that I am running in 7 channel stereo mode.

I am pushing 7 ceiling mounted 3 way speakers with it.

I am also outputting the signal to a 300 watt keyboard amp with a 15 inch woofer.

That should do it.

I have all of the industrial shelving in place. I just need to start organizing. That is my weak point. I am messy. It bothers me.

I need to build a new electronics workbench.

I need to reroute some water and gas pipes due to unrelated issues.

I will post some pics this week.

Yesterday was the first major test of my new basement flood defense system.

We had a good sized thunderstorm move through here.

there were 80 mph winds, and torrential rain.

I lost power for more than twelve hours. It came back on about 5am.

I couldn't afford a backup generator so I had to hope the drainage system on its own was relieving hydrostatic pressure enough to prevent flooding.

My basement was bone dry when I left for work this morning.

If this storm would have hit last year I would have needed scuba gear down there.

Next year's budget includes a whole house generator.

Speakers are all installed.

My 300 watt keyboard amp is working as a subwoofer right now. I still need to buy a real sub or maybe 2 subs to fill that space.

It sounds pretty damn good right now.

I will post some pics tonight.

The little unibomber light is cute, But Omg, that shop is depressing, Think you got enough pegboard yet?, the floor seems to have water damaged cement and ceiling seems quite low for working on games (more pegboard perhaps?)...But my favorite, is the no pics of your 300 watt Walmart amp, after all that hype and the world doesn't even get a pic of your greatness...Now that is funny... :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

It isn't a Walmart amp. It is a keyboard amp. I will take a pic tonight and post it for you.

It is also temporary. I really need 2 subs to get the low end punch I need.
