Title: Should I convert component consoles over to hdmi?
Post by: Howard_Casto on July 18, 2017, 03:46:46 pm
So I'm working on getting my xbox/ps2/gamecube era consoles ready for nostalgia fun but I'm having a bit of a debate in my head.  Should I get those little hdmi adapters for these consoles or just be cheap and use component?  I know the picture quality difference will be minimal, but hdmi has the benefit of being fairly future proof as well as only having to run a single wire as opposed to a gigantic 5 cable mess.

The main thing holding me back is I don't know how good these adapters are.  I know there is one for the wii you can get for a couple of bucks.  They make one for the ps2 but it's slightly pricier at around 10..... I don't know if that denotes quality or some random technological reason.  I can't seem to find one for the original xbox.... If they can't make one then that might effect my decision as I'll have to deal with component anyway.  I'm not bothering with the gamecube as the Wii can handle it just fine.   None of this stuff is terribly expensive, but it does add up spread across several consoles and I'd rather not wait a month to find out they are junk anyway.

I'm rambling, but it would be extremely helpful to me if anyone with experience with these adapters specifically made for one console would chime in.

I've got this one:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00O58LOBW/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00O58LOBW/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

It defaults to the component input when powered on.  Combined with a component splitter or a shitload of Y-cables you'd be good to go.  I imagine there are cheaper options available now, but I've been pleased with it.

That's not what I'm looking for.... I have a few converter boxes (none for component though) and I'm looking for a more streamlined solution.

Something like this:

If the converters are that cheap, just get them! If they suck, put them in a Goodwill bin...

It's not the wasted money, it's more of the wasted time.  It could take weeks for them to come in and if it's a dud I've gotta wait even longer for the next batch to come in.  I think I'll get the wii one as it tends to get favorable reviews, but I can't find any info on the ps2 converters and they are more expensive.  I'm still having trouble finding an xbox solution.

Wasted time? What were you going to do in those weeks if you could have them today? Is there not something else you could be doing in the meantime  ???

My attention span when it comes to projects is like a gnat anymore.  Gotta work on this stuff while I'm in the mood and play some games.

I've decided to hold off for now.... looking into it a bit more the ps2 adapter is closer to 20 bucks and afaict there isn't an xbox version.  I'm going to have to re-evaluate.

If you've "decided to hold off" then order them. They will surprise you in the mail in 2 months and you'll feel inspired then to tackle it again.

My 5 year old LG 32 inch TV hdmi board took a dump, and the only two hd ports are component and vga.  I picked up a component switch box from goodwill for about $3.43 and everything just works fine, I just need to find a component for the xbox one and i am golden.

Component looks pretty good.

Oh ok. I know what that's like! Still, Rayb's suggestion is good (",)

Well I'm wondering about how the conversion is done... if they are using the rgb lines of the wii or component out.  If they are converting the component I might be able to modify one to work with the xbox, which, afaict won't do any form of rgb out.

At that price it's incredibly unlikely that you get any real conversion / upscaling, etc.. out of the system but you know this stuff. It probably just going to use default resolution straight from the pins.

Good luck with whatever you decide to go with and will check back on this post in a few years. Wait here.

I'm actually fine with that.  I don't want upscaling, ect... I want the original resolution.  I think it's worth investigating because if I can easily adapt one to work generically with other consoles we have a 4 dollar hdmi conversion dongle, which is far cheaper and smaller (not to mention simpler) than some of the other conversion solutions out there.

Hmm.....  well now I'm going to have to get one just to curb my curiosity.

Check out the pinouts:

http://pinouts.ru/Game/nintendo_wii_av_pinout.shtml (http://pinouts.ru/Game/nintendo_wii_av_pinout.shtml)

Apparently the Wii doesn't do RGB on NTSC models.  So the question is, wtf would the adapter be using as a signal to convert to hdmi?  Svideo?  Composite?  You would think it would be component, but you never know with these rigs.

It sounds like it would be a crap solution for the Wii if component isn't used BUT it might be useful for more vintage systems.  A hdmi dongle for the NES consoles and older might be useful since you can't pull rgb out of them anyway.  I mean I've got converter boxes for everything but component, yet more options are always a good thing.

If component IS used then it would be a great solution for that era of consoles....  buy a component cable for a couple of bucks and then splice it into one of these adapters.

There is a PS2 converter on Amazon with 27 reviews...

If memory serves me correctly SVIDEO carries a cleaner picture / reduced noise. I've seen SVIDEO to HDMI converters so if you did decide to ever go that route you could do so without a lot of additional effort.

Does the Wii do SCART or other standards?

Damn I couldn't stay away for more than 3 or 4 years between posts.

Title: Re: Should I convert component consoles over to hdmi?

Well see that is the question.  The Wii will do rgb/scart, but only pal Wiis.  The NTSC Wiis do component.  Since these aren't advertised as NTSC only or PAL only I have to assume that they will do both scart and component.  I found a thread on psx scene where someone had modified it to work on the ps2.  Apparently it works just fine, the only issue is it has trouble with low resolution interlaced modes and the 5v on the ps2 av out isn't enough to power it so you have to use a usb cable.  It'll still display interlaced modes, it just has some screen tearing.  They did it on a NTSC ps2, so that means they'll do component, which means it could be cobbled into a xbox adapter, which is nice since no such adapter exists.

Oh and it gets more interesting.  There are several articles telling users of the device to go into the Wii's settings and set the resolution to 480p or else it'll output 480i.  Now if those are written for ntsc consoles, that means that the adapter also does either s-video or composite, possibly both.

So taking all that into account it's a 4 dollar rgb/component/whatever 2 hdmi adapter that's not much larger than the typical av out on most console cables and can be powered by either the console itself or the TV's usb port.  That's a pretty nifty find.  I saw some screenshots of the inside of the adapter and it'd be easy to solder on component connectors or just remove the wii av connector and solder a different one in it's place.  Even easier, the av port of a wii is just a pcb used as a blade.... so whip up a breakout pcb and send it off to one of those pcb mills.
