Just looking for any feedback or input on my planned cabinet build. I'm doing a "Mr. Peabody" theme, and have the sides and control panel close to done. I'm just wondering if folks think this looks OK or if they have any advice. Thanks!
-
You know, I generally don't care for non-arcade themed cabs, but I must commend you on the control panel. I love it.
-
Thanks! I didn't want a generic mame cabinet, so opted to at least pick one theme. I did the side panels first, but now that I've worked on the control panel I feel like I should re-do the sides so they fit better...
-
Side art needs work. One large image rather than the collage look. Maybe pebody on one side and sherman on other.
-
^agreed
Ditch the scene image. Seems out of place. The Peabody and Sherman decals are good.
Also I'm not sure where the idea came from where people started putting the title of the cabinet on side art. A majority of cabinets bitd only had images, and relied on the marquee to show the name.
-
Thanks! I agree the side panels were looking a bit too "clip arty" for my liking. I will look at redoing them, and also need to prepare the marquee. Much appreciate the feedback - I've learned a lot about using inkscape. Converting old cartoon screengrabs into nice clean vectors is quite time consuming!
-
Here's an updated style - I've also included a marquee and kick plate. Appreciate any feedback - Thanks!

That looks much better.

What would be cool is if you incorporated the blue/pink swirly portal elements on the top area and behind both characters. Not a duplicate circle portal, perhaps just some swirly-wispy-trailing "framing" elements to help tie the theme together. As if it's run-off from the machine's portal (think about s-curve shapes with this). It also doesn't need to encompass the characters entirely, they can superimpose the swirly-wispy stuff behind them.
Also, could Sherman be another graphic? Throwing the lever is cool, but do you have something that he isn't giving a fist-bump to thin air?
-
I'm limited on Sherman options but agree that was a bit awkward. I'm trying a new one here. Also added a mock up of the swirls - I think it adds some needed color and detail to the sides. I'll need to think about whether that's the color I want, but it's not a bad addition.
-
That makes a world of difference. Much more cohesive.
Just one thing - less about the graphics and more about the cp layout. It looks quite deep (which is fine) but I'd be thinking about maybe moving the buttons up a little so you have room for your wrists. You might find it a lot more comfortable for long sessions.

There ya go. That looks pretty great! It's nice and bold too, the way side art should be.
I'm sure you'll be tweaking it more, but I just wanted to point out the line weight of the yellow contour outline is getting thin around the curvy area.
Much better overall. Sherman is still a little awkward though, but I guess if you're limited in poses this'll do.

I really like that design, not the kind of thing I go for normally but I do like it!
Only comment I would make is ime not sure about the colours of the swirl.
The red and blue is fine but I think it may benefit from being lightened a bit, maybe put a bit of a shadow around the characters so it blends a bit?

Thanks for the input everyone - yes, the swiggles on the side were very roughly drawn in, so it will need more attention in terms of playing nicely with the existing border and characters. I'm not sure about the color of them either now that they are plastered on the sides!
As to the control panel, there will be a 4-way and two buttons towards the top center that don't show up in the image. My cabinet will be 27" wide on the interior, so I started with the Cowboy Arcade control panel plans that I saw floating around here. I've ordered the joysticks and buttons and agree I need to make sure things aren't pushed back too far to be comfortable for playing. I really appreciate everyone's input, I think this is looking much better than when I started...

Ok - attached is what I think will be pretty much the final design. I'm waiting for my buttons to come in so I can see their actual colors and make sure I'm happy with everything. Thanks again for everyone's input. I'll post pics once I get everything put together!

Kudos to you, brother!

Really nice - this cab is gonna be purdy :)

Please EVERYONE take notice!
Here is an example of someone who started off with questionable design, took feeback, and came up with something tits!
Kudos to you sir!

Yeah, this definitely went from a 6 to a 9.

Thats the baby! Looks good!
-
That looks pretty great. I like that design

I like that you are not stubborn like me and took the advice given - it really looks improved without departing from your original idea. Big Mr.Peabody fan... loved the Rocky & Bullwinkle show and cartoons of that calibre. Hope to see this completed in a cab soon :notworthy:

I've got the artwork installed and it's looking great. I'll share some pictures once I've got a chance to figure out the bezel. But I'm very happy with everything and can't wait to share the final product :)
