Not sure why I found this so fascinating. Every look seems like it belonged in a character in a movie exaggerating the 80’s except this is real life. It reminds me of Back to the Future, they even had an old farmer talking about how he sold his land to build the mall. It is like Hill Valley in real life. It is almost like an alternate reality, current day society with residual areas, cars, wealth and shopping malls but a reality with no internet. Instead of every teen has there head glued in a phone no one is making real life connections bla, bla all that ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- there problem is what do we do, who do we talk to, where do we go.

Oh how I loved the malls, all the fun stories, the smell of scented candles and hot T shirt transfers, laughing with friends.....**Jennifer sadly lowers her V/r glasses and whurrrrs off on her hover board.

Some of that footage looked an awful lot like Sharpstown Mall, but I suspect all malls looked the same anyway. Now it's Plazamericas, 'hispanic themed', and has indoor flea markets and Spanish speaking clowns making balloon animals while you eat elote. Whenever I'm not broke, I may go get a tailored sharkskin suit. There's a nice retro video game store in there that I suspect is a laundering front. I have NEVER seen anyone buy anything in that place.
Galleria still doing well and it's hilarious to see companies set up shop and think, "this is what those rich idiots want." Shops with 2 purses on display, or the place with Russian teenagers pushing caviar. Apple store is a damn madhouse, though. People begging for money outside Neiman Marcus is a nice touch. Every now and then a black supremacist tells me I'm a white devil at the crosswalk.

Sounds about as bad as San Jacinto Mall in Baytown. Man, that place was awesome in the 80's. The footage I see of it now....ugh.

We actually had an Alamo Drafthouse in a mall in Houston shut down because nobody went.

The 80s mall by me was pretty awesome, they had a couple of cool water fountains, a nice arcade, a movie store, KB Toys, Music Land, and a bitchin food court. Not to mention a two floor Yonkers, Boston Store, and Sears all of which are closed now. The water fountains turned into ---smurfy--- cell phone Kiosks. and of course the Arcade closed its doors in the early 2000s.
I remember the arcade having a Mortal Kombat, Captain Comando, Primal Rage, X-men Children of the Atom, Smash TV, Turtles, A four slot Neo Geo, later a MK2 and Killer Instinct.
First time I saw MK in person. It was pretty shocking for an 11 year old.

My mom would dump me off at the mall arcade while she shopped. I was short for my age so I needed a stool to reach the controls. The mall was near Naval Station Great Lakes. There were always Navy guys and girls there. I remember the white uniforms and the white hats. When I ran out of tokens one of the navy guys would escort me to to find my mom and ask for a couple bucks more. I remember at least one time a couple guys came with me and they were really playing it up. They said we were on a mission. We were ducking behind garbage cans and hiding behind pylons. Good Times.

Used to take my 5 yr old son there on the weekends.
Fed a bunch of quarters to a Simpsons 4 player game.
We just had to beat it, and we finally did, but I have no idea how much money I spent on it. Probably really dont want to know.

Like you could put a price on that, You should be more like "OMG, we should have played that more often", and then go get him a giant pretzel as big as his head, and then go back to the arcade until your feet hurt. 8)....I would think the reality however half of the arcade attraction was freedom FROM your parents, and socializing with friends and strangers, Even at that age, and not be "That kid" everyone else was talking about. (or so you thought at the time)

Jenn, you are so right. Those were good memories and the money was well spent. When he was young it was cool to hang out with Dad, we both looked forward to the weekend. Now, when he got around 11-13 years old, hanging out with Dad was not so cool anymore. It was very hard for me to accept that, but I guess we all have to sooner or later.
Now he has a son (7 months old right now), so I'm sure he will go through the same experiences.
I tell him to enjoy it while the boy is young, cause they will grow up someday, and that someday will be here before you can turn around.

Watch the original Dawn of the Dead by George Romero.... That is the best mall movie. Plus they have a bit of time in the arcade.

Day upped the game for gore, but if you ever have the patience or time read George Romero's script. Because he had a pretty awesome script that got stripped down completely by the time they filmed. Would have been a much cooler movie.

Yeah, he re-used some of those ideas for Land of the Dead.

Simpsons is 1991. I loved hanging around my parents. They were cool and we talked. They still are and we still do.
