It's time for 2009 NFL Last Man Standing Pick Em BYOAC style!
Congratulations to J_K_M_A_N for winning 2008 Round One and Cakemeister for Winning 2008 Round Two.
I got no input in or out of this thread on the prize so I chose it. This year's prize is a NIB 13" touchscreen CRT. It has been out of the box once to test the picture. The box has been sitting on a shelf in my basement for at least 2 years so let's get this to someone who might use it. ;D
Rules are simple. Choose one game each week. Pick the winner. If you are wrong you are eliminated from the game. Last man standing wins. I will keep track of everyone's picks each week and display them by editing this post.
When making a pick, highlight it in the post, so that they're easier to pick out. I don't want to miss anyone's pick.
A pick must be made every week. Failure to make a pick results in elimination. Picks should be posted in this thread so that people have the ability to double check my work.
You cannot pick a game with the same team two weeks in a row. If you pick the Rams over the Titans in week 2, you cannot use either the Rams game or the Titans game in week 3.
Entrant pool closes an hour preceding the game you want to pick. That means that if you want to pick Thursday's game this week you must do so at least an hour before the game starts. Forum timestamps will be binding.

Let's see if I can be done in one.
I usually am. :banghead:
-
Baltimore over KC
Since I can drive to your house I'll take one of your pins as a prize.
-
New Orleans over Detroit
Thanks for starting this up again. I'll have my fingers crossed for you to last at least 2 weeks this time.
I feel a little bad playing a game you're monitoring when you keep getting kicked out of it in the first week.
-

Dude that's almost cheating!
Minnesota over Cleveland
-
Dude that's almost cheating!
I'd feel bad if Chad got kicked out in the first week, but I'd feel even worse if I got kicked out in the first week.
-
Suppose I'll give it a shot this year. I've usually avoided it because I figured if I lasted a few weeks, I'll just end up forgetting one week anyway.
Pittsburgh over Tennessee
What's the second digit for in the glow option? I can't see any difference.
-
San Diego over Oakland
-
I haven't quite decided on the prize yet. Would people prefer something small (easily shipped) but console based or bigger and arcade based? I have items of each type sitting around. Neither will be all that expensive but will be something good that has been sitting around unused for a long time.
How about a Black Knight sound board? ;D We are currently have issues with our sound board.
I really don't care what the prize is I just want to win.
Vikings over Browns
-
Lets root for the home team
Seattle over St. Louis week 1
-
Wow, the lack of gimmes next week makes this week sort of hard.
San Diego over Oakland
-
How about a Black Knight sound board? ;D We are currently have issues with our sound board.
:) I don't actually think the sound board is the issue. I think it's the sound PIA on the CPU. I have replacement PIAs in hand now but haven't had the time to cut that one out and socket it.
You do bring up a good point, though, and I do have a working Laser Cue in storage. Maybe I'll make the effort to swap that sound board in to check.
-
New Orleans over Detroit
-
Gotta go with my team for week 1.
Green Bay over Chicago
-
Seattle over St. Louis
Rooting for the home team.... at least for week one
-
Gotta go with my team for week 1.
Green Bay over Chicago
I know there's no money on the line, but WTF?!? Are you even trying?
Green Bay should win, but it's too early to be taking this kind of a risk.

If you paid attention the last 2 years at this game, you wouldn't question my pick. ;)
Besides, its more fun to make a difficult pick.
-
New Orleans over Detroit
Chad, thanks for running this again! :applaud:
-
I've seen a pink omen: Detroit will shock the world by beating NO in week one.
I'm willing to change my pick on that one!
-

Yes, it would be shocking to have two winless seasons. :D
-
Philadelphia Eagles over Carolina Panthers
-
Seahawks over St. Louis
Hopefully first of many for the Hawks this year!
-
Week 1:
Patriots over Bills
Chad, don't take the Bucs! :)
-
markrvp: Dallas over Tampa Bay - 9/13/09
-
Patriots over Bills
Chad, don't take the Bucs! :)
I've made that mistake before. This isn't the year for it. :-\
BTW, Bills @ Pats is a dangerous pick. The Pats always have serious problems with the Bills in Foxboro and the Dolphins in Miami. Every... single... year.
-
Plus the Patriots don't cheat anymore...right?
Probably not... and one would think going 29-6 since then has proven they don't need it, yes?
Fifty TD passes was a pretty big "told you so". :laugh2:
-
Baltimore over KC
-
Baltimore over KC

The Patriots have the highest rating in Madden '10. Plus, I like their uniforms and helmet logo. So they should win this game. :)
-

yeah and all those super bowl rin.......nevermind they havent done that since like 05
-
yeah and all those super bowl rin.......nevermind they havent done that since like 05
3 seasons without a super bowl... how many teams would kill to have that problem?
I'm not nearly as much a Pats fan as someone who likes to taunt people who hate them. ;D
-
Week 1
Baltimore over Kansas City
J_K_M_A_N

Week one went well. Let's see if some of you sissies can make a more bold pick this week.

Alright, you all can start punching your Minnesota over Detroit tix now.
As for me:
Week 2
Houston over Tennessee

First one out doesn't get a prize. :P
Did you see any of the Texan's highlights from this week? Probably not as there weren't any! (Sorry Cakemeister!). And yes, I have Schaub on one of my fantasy teams.... (Sumbitch!)
-
We'll see...we'll see..
I'd rather pick a game that gets me excited, than pick a game that makes me nervous.
Besides, I didn't get knocked out last week did I? I also have outlasted most others the last 2 years playing.
-
I'm just trying to make this incredibly BORING game a little more interesting.

I'm just trying to make this incredibly BORING game a little more interesting.
I did that last year after picking a few easy ones the first few weeks. It bit me in the ass. :)
-
Damn didn't see this until today. Is it too late to pick the Pats over the Bills for week 1?
-

You're good. As long as you pick an hour before the game starts, you are set.

Packers over Bengals

Has that ever happened before? Everyone surviving the first week, I mean.
-
Minnesota over Detroit
-
This week is really hard to pick. Most of the close games have the better team on the road.... several crappy teams played well in week 1 and we don't know if they are really good or not. Hmmmm... I'll wait until the weekend to pick.
-
Indianapolis Colts over Miami Dolphins
-
Has that ever happened before? Everyone surviving the first week, I mean.
I don't think so. We usually get at least one instance of opposite picks.
-
Week 2: Minnesota over Detroit
-
Every game I saw last week both teams kinda stank... except maybe pittsburgh and tennesee
So I will take
Week 2
Pittsburgh beats Chicago
PS. Shardian is the gamer of this group. I hope he wins.

Thanks Chad for doing this. :applaud:

Can't say I was surprised. 8)

Hey, how do you think I feel - what a great game though, either Dallas or NY could have won that game....even had to kick the game winning field goal TWICE !
Was fun.
-
Nuts! Not only did I lose on week two, but I lost before Chad!
A lot of upsets that week. I was even got knocked out of the game I was playing for money.
This will be the first year I don't even win my money back.
Good luck guys.
-
I lost before Chad!
If this year's game is as short as last year's we will have a second round. I am assuming that will be the case.
-
Indianapolis Colts over Miami Dolphins
Uh oh... two men enters, one men leaves.
bai :)
-
PHI over KC
-
Looks like I'm out! Good luck to everyone with their week three picks.
-
Week 3
Green Bay over St. Louis
-
Week 3:
Baltimore over Cleveland.
-
Week 3: Baltimore over Cleveland
-
This week is difficult for me. Sure I got my normal gut hunch of the upset, but now that espn is trying to be 'upset savvy', I feel like I have been tampered with.
My usual gut feeling was San Fran over Minnesota. ESPN seemed to be hunching toward this one too I saw during lunch. Then I started seeing Detroit over Washington. If they are gonna win, it is this week though. Too obvious...and ESPN is hunching it too.
My unadulterated pick would be Buffalo over New Orleans, but I just feel like my whole picking method has been tainted this week.
Thus, I'll take a week off of upset picking.
Baltimore over Cleveland.
You know what, screw it. I am confident in this pick:
49ers over Vikings in the MetroDome.
-
Dallas over Carolina
-
---fudgesicle---, I dont know who to pick. This is my pick, for now: and yes, it was a lot of work to make it look that
good bad.
NewOrleans Saints over Buffalo Bills
-
You know what, screw it. I am confident in this pick:
49ers over Vikings in the MetroDome.
I really hope your right. Big test for my Niners. I am worried that its the "sexy" pick of the week, along with picking DET over WAS.
-
Week 3 - Gotta go with Baltimore over Cleveland
J_K_M_A_N
-
Week 4:
NY Giants over KC Chiefs
-
Wow! I thought the Vikings weren't going to be able to pull off a win at the end. Farve showed his talent today.
Week 4: Vikings over Packers
-
Crap, sorry guys, RL has been intruding big time the last few days. I'll catch up on the main post tonight.
-
Sonofabitch. Yes, that is why they got Favre over Jackson.
EDIT: I saw the play finally. No skill involved, just dumb luck. It was more fun when I was rooting for Favre...
-
Didn't make my Week 3 pick!
Week 3: Dallas over Carolina
-
Week 4 pick:
SF over STL
---fudgesicle--- Brett Favre. I ---smurfing--- hate that ---uvula---.
-
Week 3: Dallas over Carolina
Pfft... 8.5 point spread on that one. Way to live dangerously.
I only had two games to choose at that point. Better that one than Indy-Arizona.
-
Week 4:
I've gotta go with my Texans over the Raiders
-
Week 4
Baltimore over New England
-
Week 4
New York Giants over Kansas City
-
New York Giants over Kansas City Cheifs
-
I'll go the unsafe route this time.

I'll go the unsafe route this time.
Tampa Bay over Washington
:(
When will you learn?
:banghead:
-
Dallas deserved that - the long TD to Marshall was one of the worst displays of D effort I've ever seen in the NFL. Dallas consistently proves the team considers puppet coaches more important than quality coaches and it shows on the field week after week after week.
-

Week 5:
Steelers over Lions
I'm out of this already so I know jack ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- about football (as one of my fantasy teams proves!), but Detroit isn't playing that badly. If Stafford is playing, I think they have a shot of beating Pittsburgh at home. Without him, about zero chance. But this is a much different team than last year's.
-
Eagles over Bucs
-
Once again my faith in the Bucs was rewarded with a Wile E Coyote exit from the game.
:banghead:

Yes. Yes they do.
Oh well, I got into this just for the pride anyway.
I say from now on, the 3 or 4 games with the highest spreads are not eligible to pick. More fun that way.
Hold one for the first 8 weeks, then another set the second half of the season.
-
J E T S suck suck suck
good luck everyone!
-
I say from now on, the 3 or 4 games with the highest spreads are not eligible to pick. More fun that way.
You might think that's the safe route but one upset eliminates half the field. That has happened in the past. Hell it happens nearly every time the Lions win.
I have been considering making it so that once there are only two left they can't pick the same game.
-

An interesting twist could be to have Pick Em where the game is randomly selected and everyone has to pick the winner from that game only. Either vs. the spread or straight up.
I'm not saying that for your game or right now or this week or whatever. Just thinking out loud and throwing it out there. I got nothing else to do in this thread and haven't for weeks on end. ;D
-
Or you could do it where once you pick a team as a winner or loser you cant pick them again - EVER. So people cant rotate back to the Rams/Bucs/Raiders every few weeks. Thats actually how I've seen most of these pick em contests formatted.
-
Heh. Well, anyone who wants to run a different style game is more than welcome as far as I'm concerned. It wouldn't bother me. I wouldn't ever factor the spread in because I don't gamble and don't even really know how the spread works.
I have considered Flake's suggestion in the past. We do a pretty good job of regulating ourselves of the super safe picks because there is no money involved. If we ever get to a point where guys are lasting 14 weeks that way we would definitely have to adjust the rules somehow.
-
Week 7
New England over Tampa Bay
J_K_M_A_N
We could probably get 3-4 rounds if you could never pick the same teams again. Or maybe just take the teams you pick off the table for 2 or 3 weeks instead of just 1. So if you pick the Vikes over the Lions then you couldn't pick either of those for the next two weeks...or even 3 weeks. Just a thought. Harder to run it for Chad though.
-
Harder to run it for Chad though.
Definitely.
I just have one thing to say about your pick, bro... please please please do better against New England than the Titans did. Kthx. A win is probably too much to ask but let's not go 59-0.
-
I know! 5 touchdowns in one quarter is INSANE!
J_K_M_A_N
-
I hope Brady gets his other leg broke next time he remains in the game in the 3rd or 4th quarter with a 40 point + lead.
-
We could take it to the sublime level of idiocy and let all of us losers vote on what game the guys still in it have to pick from.
KC v. Cleveland (if they ever play) would be a good one to pick!
:laugh2:
-
I hope Brady gets his other leg broke next time he remains in the game in the 3rd or 4th quarter with a 40 point + lead.
So why isn't it a problem that Welker and Moss were still in there? Or the starting OL? Or Maroney? Is only Brady supposed to get pulled there? Ben Watson played the whole game - better hit him with a car because the Pats played their starting TE up by 59!
Which is a bigger sin: playing the starting QB up by 40 or playing any of your defensive starters down by 40?
-
Tenn didn't have any defense starters dressed yesterday.
-
I was only mentioning Brady because that is who you guys had mentioned earlier. So take it in context, not out of it. But to answer your question, I would have pulled my entire starting offense except for the line maybe, and then maybe some of them - especially with a lead like that. Either way, the Pats can better sustain an injury to Moss or Welker than they can Brady. As far as Fischers defense, you dont pull starters when your down.
-
As far as Fischers defense, you dont pull starters when your down.
Clearly the starters can't get it done - you're down 40 points. It's time to try something else.
In the NFL you don't pull starters who are succeeding. Manning never comes out. Brees never comes out. The Titans are lucky as the Pats could have put 100 on them but didn't. The Pats are under no obligation to pull Brady when they do. Defenders get paid too. The NFL is not high school.
-
I never said he had an obligation to pull them. I just dont think it makes any sense to just pile it on by keeping your starters in there when the game is clearly over. Especially in those weather conditions. I think its part of Bellicheats smugness, that frankly, I hope backfires on him someday.
And thats really all I was saying in the first place. I know your a Buc fan but clearly, living so close to Foxboro, the Boston area love fest with Brady has finally rubbed off on you.
-

I find it more offensive that the Titans folded up in pregame warmups than the Patriots putting up 59 points. They never even attempted to play a viable game in the snow. The Cardinals did the same thing last year and I got to see it from the 8th row. The Cardinals didn't even take pregame warmups and were down 44-0 because they didn't feel like playing in snow. That's unprofessional and especially disappointing as a fan when you pay $400 to see a team that has no intention of competing.
I know your a Buc fan but clearly, living so close to Foxboro, the Boston area love fest with Brady has finally rubbed off on you.
So a locale being happy with their team is a love fest? Is it a problem everywhere or just here? I'm not so much a Brady fan as I am a fan of anyone who plays at a near perfect level. Plus I clearly enjoy taunting people who irrationally hate the Patriots. ;D So many people seem to have forgotten that for 40 years the Pats were a punchline of a pro sports franchise.
-

Actually you are right on two points here.
1. I do irrationally hate the Patriots. I admit it, not ashmased to say it. Its probably due more to the media's portrayal of them over the last decade but nonetheless I still hate them.
2. The Brady love fest is nationwide not just local. Apparently its spilled over into the officiating crews as well. Did you see the personal foul roughing the passer flag for a DE's slap to Brady's face? I almost spit out the diet pepsi I was drinking at the time all over the carpet. Whats that now, two or three weeks of ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow--- flags called for "roughing" up the NFL's prince charming? We certainly wouldnt want Brady to get actually tackled in an NFL game.
If Manning was better looking I wonder if the officials would circle around him after every snap so as to ensure he never even gets touched.
-
I do enjoy seeing the Patriot's throwback uniforms. They are so much better than current uniform. Can't say the same for some other places....
-

We certainly wouldnt want Brady to get actually tackled in an NFL game.
I 100% agree with you on that. Even Rodney Harrison called that out a couple weeks ago in a pregame show. Brady seems to have inherited the Michael Jordan Rules.
If Manning was better looking I wonder if the officials would circle around him after every snap so as to ensure he never even gets touched.
It's hard to get tackled when you're filming commercials between drives.

I think manning is better looking and definitively funnier.
I do enjoy seeing the Patriot's throwback uniforms. They are so much better than current uniform. Can't say the same for some other places....
I think only the pats and chargers have snazzy throwbacks.

Its Wayne Gretzky rules..............
As for potential rule changes, I like the idea of only being able to pick a team to win once a season, its how my GF's office pool works and its pretty easy to track on the first page. In the end, you run this (and thanks for doing so) so its ultimately up to you
-
Its Wayne Gretzky rules..............
Exactly. Jordan was allowed to do whatever the hell he wanted on the court. I always rooted against the Bulls in the Finals.
Gretsky was off-limits to touch - by officials and a whole bench of enforcer grunts waiting to pummel the hell out of anyone who got one past the officials.

That is typical of hockey back then. The officials part was not. Gretzky was the first major star of that stature, I think, that couldn't defend himself so the refs did it for him. :-\ They sure never protected Bobby Orr!

Week 7:
Houston over San Fran

Week 7:

I really want to go with the home team and take NE but I will go with Indy over St. Louis.
-

J_K_M_A_N
-
IND over SF
-
Week 8:
San Diego over Oakland
-
I'll try and make in interesting and take New Orleans over Atlanta
-
Well, that was fun. Damn AZ! Good luck guys.
J_K_M_A_N

...and now we are again guaranteed a first time champion. :)
-
If winning this means successfully alternating between Detroit or Cleveland to lose, then what's the point of winning?
Go JMB!!
-
None of the four games picked this week are a gimme. Tonight's game is a tough one. Indy almost lost and Oakland could have realistically beaten SD.
-
Indy almost lost
God dont remind me....painful. Keep IND to 18 points and cant pull out the win. Jimmy Raye needs to go.
-
Indy's defense is not as bad as people think. 17 wins in a row can't all be on the offense.

I dont disagree but we did move the ball yesterday when in more a spread offense but of course the OC refuses to continue to do what works. I'm not giving Singletary a pass on that either. The responsibility lies with him as well.
-
SF is on the swing back up, IMO. So long as ownership is smart enough to keep Singletary and his team in place SF could become a force again in that division within a couple of years. They also have to cut the cord on Alex Smith, too, and get on with the process of finding the QB they really need.
-
PHI over DAL
-
Week 9:
PIT over DEN
-
I was going to take Philly but I will choose a different game to keep it interesting. Atlanta over Washington
-
Good luck to the final two. Could be decided to tonight I suppose. I'm hoping for a good game tonight.
-
At least you went out with a good pick. That was definitely a risky one (like my pick for tonight!)
-
Week 10:
Arizona over Seattle
-
I'll risk going out in a blaze of glory and take the local boys. NE over Indy
-
I can't believe the Pat's blew that game!
Congrats ahofle!
-
Thanks again Chad for running this. It's appreciated.

No problem. It's fun. ;D

-
Cool thanks guys (and thanks for running this Chad)!
I can't believe the Pats lost that one too. I turned off the game with 4 minutes left LOL!

Where's the thread for doing this again this year? I pick the Cowboys over the Redskins
