Greetings all,

I've had an arcade addiction since I was young and have played so many arcade machines, consoles and handheld's over the years. This project will be my official foray into the MAME World and will be my second build (the first was for a family member and done as a proof of concept). I'm starting off easy by putting together a simple bartop machine that will reside in my office to be used to entertain family and friends. My theme for this bartop will be based on the classic Space Invaders and I'll be using one of Pete Diak's kits (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=98248.0 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=98248.0)) for the initial construction.

If you've never seen one of Pete's Kits you be pleasantly surprised on how well it is packaged and how easy it is to put together. The package includes everything you need and the documentation is simple enough to follow.

I started with bottom and worked on attaching the side supports.

Next up was attaching my sides and then top along with the marquee supports.

Once the marquee supports were in the last step was to install the kick panel at the bottom.

Here is where I am after Day 1, a few of my measurements were off and I had to go back and do some re-adjustments to make sure everything was level and even. In between the top and bottom marquees I installed a few retaining clips to hold two these..

While browsing my local electronics shop I came across a box full of 9" Sylvania LED Strips which is normally used for under cabinet lighting. The nice thing about these are that are linkable and use only one power source and were very cheap. Originally I was planning to use white cold cathodes but changed my mind after finding these and seeing how bright they were.

I've always been a bit weary of those arcade bartop kits. They seem to be made out of the crappiest particle board and resemble sub-ikea quality furniture. Yours seems to be holding up well though.

You can source these LED strips or similar products at your local hardware store. I'm based in Toronto, Canada so the hardware store of choice is Canadian Tire, Home Depot or Lowes.

To continue where I left off, I started to compile my laundry list of goodies that I would need to complete this build and placed a few online orders. Here is what I ordered:

I started tonight's build by working on the back portion of the bartop. The kit includes one solid piece for the rear so I cut off  a 1/4 portion in order to create a mount for dual 120mm exhaust fans as well as power and reset buttons. The power and reset buttons are standard vandal switches while the 120mm fans are covered by 120mm Billet Honeycomb fan grills from MNPCTech.com.

I started working on my LCD monitor mount by using a spare piece of plywood and angle aluminum. The flip side of this mount will be holding two 1TB Western Digital Black Drives which I'll show later.

Front view of the LCD monitor mount which will be using a simple Dynex 13"-26" fixed flat TV wall mount that I picked up from Best Buy for $20.

Here is the back side of the mount for the 19" HP LCD that I will be using for this project. It was a nice free score from work which cut some of my costs for purchasing a new one.

I did a test fit of the LCD and it lines up nicely so with that work out of the way I can now start to work on my control panel.

Good question, most people will install their speakers inside the marquee area but after mounting the lighting I had no room. I'll be re-locating the speakers on the rear of the cabinet and explain in greater detail what I did.

Most of my order has started to come in but ran into a little snag with my artwork from Game On Grafix. I was accidentally sent two left side panels instead of a left and right. I've been working with Scott on correcting the mistake and he's shipping me a new set for this project. I mentioned in my last post that I was going to focus on my control panel so let's begin..

I headed over to the Slagcoin Joystick Controller Page (http://www.slagcoin.com/joystick/introduction.html (http://www.slagcoin.com/joystick/introduction.html)) and used one of the fantastic templates to lay out my joystick and button controls. My goal is to make this bartop comfortable for two players.

Used my drill and hole saw to drill out the joystick and button mounts.

Applied my CP and started doing some test fittings with the Ultraluxx push buttons.

Finished the detail portion of the control panel by installing all the buttons, adding my acrylic protective panel and black trim on the top and bottom.

Spent over a day wiring up all the buttons, I-PAC2, PacDrive and both Happ Competition 8-Way Joysticks. This has probably been the most time consuming part of this build so far but finally got it done.

I couldn't put the I-PAC2 or PacDrive flush to the backside of the control panel so I ended up elevating them a little by using some white plastic spacers. This actually worked more in my favor and simplified doing my wire runs.

I was anxious to see this thing lit up so I plugged in a USB cable to my PC and was happy that everything works.

Started doing some tests with the WinIPAC panel design software as well as played around with some animation sequences using LEDBlinky. My first time using both pieces of software but the learning curve was not to difficult.

Impressive.  Nice use of lighted pushbuttons.  Seems like a lot of buttons, though, for a bartop.  Of course, since my own (bartop!) cab. project has many more, I am not one to speak.  :laugh2:

Earlier in this thread I mentioned that I couldn't go the traditional route of installing my speakers between the top and bottom portion of marquee so here is what I came up with. It starts with a local trip to one of my favorite computer stores (Canada Computers) which had a nice 2.1 speaker set on sale.

The speakers that I am using are Altec Lansing BXR1221, which includes two 2" full-range drivers with a 4" subwoofer. Total power for this combo is just under 18W which more than what I need for this project.

First order of business was the tear the speakers apart with my dremel just to get at the internal circuit board. The circuit board would then be installed into a project box and re-wired back to both speakers on the back side of my bartop.

Here is the final assembly after a few hours work. I'll be keeping the subwoofer as is and will connect it outside the cab.

Final test of the night and everything is working correctly. I hooked the back panel up to my laptop and played a songs from the Cee-Lo Green's The Lady Killer album. I'll be attaching this back panel once I complete the installation of all the internal components.

I salvaged an old mATX motherboard tray from an HP desktop machine that was discarded at work and mounted it using standard finishing screws.

Did a lot of measuring to make sure that all my components would fit together and keep the insides clean and uncluttered.

Build a simple mount out of two pieces of angled aluminum to support both the video and sound card.

Are you planning on using this as a jukebox/multimedia/pc gaming rig in addition to the usual mame stuff?

it's a very hi-spec set up, and you probably have the biggest hard drive set up on this forum -2TB!

I've have two dedicated HTPC's so I won't use this for jukebox or multimedia. The original plan was just to run multiple emulators but I will also be working on getting some of my favorite PC's titles on here as well.

Porncade now that is some funny stuff, has anyone ever attempted to build one in this forum? I can live with the future proofing explanation since I want to drop just about every ROM I can get on hands on into this system. I just received confirmation from Game on Grafix that my replacement side art is in the mail also received my order from t-molding.com so I'll be in a good position to start working on the outside of this bartop pretty soon.

Installed my marquee and trimmed it with black angle aluminum secured with black finishing screws.

Prepped the side panels to get the artwork done. This was a bit of a challenge but cleaned up real nicely after cutting off the excess with an exacto knife.

Here is a full profile shot of what the bartop looks like so far and I'm really liking the retro look. To finish this off, I went to a local plastics shop and had them cut me a custom piece of tinted lexan which was added to the front of the LCD display.  In my next update I just have to get the t-molding installed and do some minor cosmetic changes to the back panel and I will finally be finished.

At this point the project is about 95% complete, looking over my work I wasn't satisfied with my rear panel and selection of Altec Lansing BXR1221 speakers. I've decided to go in a new direction and start over using traditional car speakers and a 12v amp. After watching a few YouTube videos I decided to purchase a Lepai LP-2020A+ amp off of e-Bay. I'm looking to compliment the amp with 4" Sound Ordnance™ P-40 (http://www.crutchfield.ca/Sound_Ordnance_P_40_4_2_way_Speakers_Mylar_Tweet_p/777p40.htm (http://www.crutchfield.ca/Sound_Ordnance_P_40_4_2_way_Speakers_Mylar_Tweet_p/777p40.htm)) or 4" Kicker KS40 http://www.crutchfield.ca/Kicker_11KS40_4_Coaxial_Speakers_p/206ks40.htm (http://www.crutchfield.ca/Kicker_11KS40_4_Coaxial_Speakers_p/206ks40.htm)). I'm not the most knowledgeable about car audio and methods of EMI shielding so I'll probably seek some advise from the forum members on how to best proceed.

The week leading up to the holiday season has been busy but I've finally managed to get some free time to work on this project. On to this mini update..

My new amp has finally come in and thankfully I was able to source it locally instead of having to order from the US.

I absolutely love the compact size of the LP-2020A+ and this shipment included a power supply which I originally thought I'd have to purchase separately.

My original plans were to purchase 4.5" car speakers from Crutchfield but couldn't find a good solution for EMI shielding my HD's and monitor. While doing some pre-boxing day shopping I managed to find a sweet deal on some M-Audio AV30's.

I had no intention of using the existing amp, audio jacks, volume control or built-in power supply so I opened it up and started stripping out the components that I would need.

Here is what I was interested in 2 x 3" polypropylene-coated woofers and 2 x 1" ferrofluid-cooled silk cone tweeters. Best of all is that everything is magnetically shielded so I don't have to worry about EMI.

Did a pretest hooking everything up to the amp using a mini IPOD player and was extremely pleased with the results. This was a vast improvement from a sound quality perspective over the original Altec Lansing BXR1221 I had originally planned to use. My next step is to re-fabricate the back panel and create some custom mounts for the speakers.

Cut my rear panel to size and used my holesaw and drill to cut out the mounts for the dual tweeters, subs and desk grommet for passing cables.

I had some extra side art work that I wasn't using so I decided to skin the rear panel and then proceed with installing all my speaker components.

I've selected Hyperspin as my front end after previously testing out Maximus Arcade and absolutely love it. There was a slight learning curve to get all the custom artwork, media, themes and emulators working but very impressed with the overall presentation.

Thanks for the compliment guys, my next project will be a full size cabinet. I'm just contemplating whether I will build it from scratch so I can customize it more or source and empty cabinet and do a complete restore.

As i mentioned earlier, I'm not a huge fan of the weecade kits but i must say, this is hands down the best weecade style bartop i have ever seen!

Looks great.   I did a build with one of Pete's kits but your attention to detail brings it to a new level.  Now I will have to look for some artwork for mine.

In the original graphic its just the targeting symbol for guns shooting up at the aliens but I'm pretty sure if you sized it correctly on the control panel you could add a trackball or spinner.

I'm using Hyperspin as my front end with the LEDBlinky plug-in to control the animation sequences for Ultralux buttons.

I'm still in the process configuring all the emulators which is very time consuming. So far I have the following configured in Hyperspin:

Mame - Arcade ROMS
Project64 - Nintendo 64 Emulator + ROMS
ZSNES - SNES Emulator + ROMS
FireBurn Alplha - NEO Geo Emulator + ROMS
Magic Engine - Turbo Grafx16 Emulator + ROMS
Kega Fusion - Sega 32x, CD and Mega CD Emulator + ROMS
Project Tempest - Atari Jaguar Emulator + ROMS
CPS3 - Capcom Play System 3 Emulator + ROMS

At some point I'll be adding batch files for PC games and well as get Daphne working for laser disc roms.
