I remember when Gain Ground appeared--my roommate & I played it at Pyramid Mall in Ithaca, NY.  Great multi-player action, but it works great as a one-player game too.  A nice, slow, relaxing, game that combines mild action with strategy & thinking quite well.  As usual, I don't want to pick a mainstream hit & want to share one of my more obscure favorites with everybody.  I hope you all like it as much as I do.

Note that this game takes a while to load because the original cabinet had a 3.5" floppy drive to read the program(!)

The next competition is Gain Ground.

Good luck!

I never played this one.  I'm not sure if I should be trying to rush through the level or kill everyone.  Either way I could throw bullets further than this gun fires them!

According to the flyer:

A long period of peace has deprived the earthlings of their instinct to wage war. The Federated Government, greatly concerned regarding this ever increasing dangerous situation, developed a GAIN GROUND simulation system in the year 2348 in an effort to instigate their ever waning fighting spirit. However, suddenly without warning, the Supercomputer went berserk and took many of the citizens as hostages. In order to rescue the POWs, three of the bravest warriors were urgently dispatched to go forth into the deadly GAIN GROUND.

OK, not a whole lot of ground gaining here.  It must have been the big holiday weekend certainly, because Gain Ground is full of awesome, of course...   8)

Here's my first good game: 350,400

I can definitely do better, but I won't have to if nobody returns fire!   :P

Thanks,
-Jason

You've taken me by surprise.  How did you come to that conclusion?  I did spend 5 years there for my BS & M.Eng. at Cornell.  I guess my name must be on record still somewhere.  I live in Pasadena, CA now--quite far away.

Thanks,
-Jason

I've played a few games, but I always seem to get left with the spear throwing dude against the stronger enemies.  I doubt I'll be able to challenge your score.  How about a nice game of "global thermonuclear warfare?"

Bald Spear Guy is my least favorite as well--I always use him last...

80k something after about 6 games

Jason how come you challenge people but don't share some tips and strategy in the game? How rude!

Relax j/k!

Since there is no more arcades and no gawking over someones shoulder to gain some strategy, here is my "over the shoulder" look:

Kill all enemies = big bonus
You can run to the exit = no bonus
Pick up wounded buddy, he/she comes back in the next level
2 buttons with different way of shooting
young guy
1st button shoots 8-way
2nd button shoots up only while strafing in any 8 ways
spear guy
1st button spear forward
2nd button spear up
Girl
1st gun?
2nd grenade forward only
different characters have different abilities better suitable for certain actions. Team work seems like it might be recommended to say the least.
For example 3rd screen. Start with the young guy with the gun (I think that's what he's holding) kill all the guys on the ground floor, stick close to the left line of rocks and run to the exit. Stumble and you'll die from spear.
spear guy kill all the guys on top ground run to the exit
girl: wipe out all the rest guys, collect 30k bonus

To do (figure out)
Got ninja, was fairly powerfull, still not sure how
How to get other characters that are in the attract mode?

Got to 1-8 with 318k.  The castle level got to me.  I think I could do better now that I figured out how to use the boomerang girl to kill everyone inside the castle.  Just need to do it quick enough, so I can save more characters.  If you save the "captives" in each level, then you get to use them in future levels.  I haven't got to some of the characters in attract mode, but there are quite a few useful players.  Saving all/as many characters as you can while still killing everyone is where the big points are.  The bonus points keep going up for each level you completely clear (1st - 10,000, 2nd - 20,000 and so on)

Posting my score to see if I can flush out someone's topper they are holding for the last minute :).  I'm really hoping to get started on building my first arcade this week.  I have most the parts and wood and just need to track down a time I can use a friend's tools.  Can't wait to update from my current setup (pic below).

Had me a fine game.  Got through all of the first 9 levels without losing a guy & with getting the bonus on every level (I think).  The bonus on level 1-9 is a doozy (90k).

Got 3 of the 4 statues killed on 1-10 but ran out of time about 1/3 of the way through the last statue--the back statues take way too many shots to kill quickly--I found the Ninja to be the best character for this level, even though he walks really slowly (I've found that, the better the weapon, the pokier the walker).  That's the farthest I've made it on 1 credit.

544,320.  I might have time to play tonight after work, too.  :)

Thanks,
-Jason

I finally figured out a decent strategy for 1-8 (or just played it enough and got to the point I could beat it pretty consistently) and haven't played 1-9 enough yet.  I think I have a good strategy for 1-9, but probably won't have enough time to try it out.  We'll see if I can get a game or two in tonight.  1-10 is pretty crazy.  Played a couple games for fun to see what it would take.  I agree the time limit for one player would be difficult to beat.

180somethingK I finally figured out how to get diferrent characters! I don't think I can get to those scores you're pulling, but I've got to admitt this game is better than I thought  at first and has quite some strategy to it.

Only 16 replies to my post in this thread.  I guess Gain Ground isn't popular enough to attract many competitors.

Well, hooray to me for 1st place, & hooray to upprc04 for 2nd place.

Since I won the last competition, I'm unable to pick the next one (besides, I might pick another dud!).

upprc04, please post a new thread as soon as you're ready--I look forward to it.

Thanks,
-Jason

I have a couple of games in mind.  I'll try to pick something out tonight or tomorrow.  Do I just put the deadline 2 weeks from the day of my post?

It's informal--make the competition roughly 2 weeks & that's fine.
