Hi all.
As the year (2018) draws to an end, it means one project is ending and another begins. Bit of history...as I no longer work with the tools anymore but teach others in the electrotechnology sector, I try to build a project each year to scratch that itch. This year, it has been a virtual pinball, last year a 4.8m sailing dinghy, the year before a pedestal arcade unit.
Next year (2019) is the year of the Jukebox...even though I have already begun some preliminary work. REALLY looking forward to this one! I love my music and it will be a great addition to a growing retro man cave.
My plan, as with previous builds is to incorporate a little old school with a bit of new.
I would really like to replicate the look of a Seeburg USC 1 or 2
(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=149895.0;attach=372590;image)
Isn't she beautiful!
Not sure I do this to scale yet as I have scaled a few pictures of them to get some rough dimensions and the components I have already purchased (more of that in another post) may not allow it. We'll see. This build will be full size.
Anyway, I have just about got the software working just the way I want it...but that can wait for another post also.
More soon.
-
I’ll be watching with interest!!! Do it!
-
Super cool project. Look forward to progress!
-
Are you guys setting up for some kind of Megaman joke? We have Meltman and Greenman in the same thread.
-
It would be ridiculously expensive but super cool if you made the top of the jukebox a big touchscreen.
Looking forward to this build.
-
Some of the components I have for the build include:
An LG 34" 21:9 ultrawide monitor (34UM95-P) This was left over from when I closed down a business. Great resolution and nice size for this project. Not touchscreen, but I want buttons for an authentic look anyway.

A set of Jensen SPX-7 Millennial Speakers (From the days that Jensen made quality gear...circa 2000). Picked up second hand, these sound really good. They may have to be cut down slightly if I want to build a Seeburg USC lookalike though.
A Yamaha RX-V540 Amplifier
(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=149895.0;attach=372609;image)
A Yamaha YST-SW305 Subwoofer
(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=149895.0;attach=372611;image)
I actually purchased the sub, amp and two Yamaha speakers a week ago for the bargain price of $100 and then sold off the speakers for $120 so effectively I got the amp and sub for free plus $20. ;D
I have tested the sound on many genres of music and it passed the test with flying colours. That sub really knocks out the bass and is more tuned for music as opposed to movies.

Here is a bit of a washed out screen pic of the software I am customising for this build. Playing around with some concepts at the moment (very much in its infancy). I will have to remove the letters O and I as jukeboxes don't use them to avoid confusion with the numbers 0 and 1. The monitor I am using is 820mm wide (32 inches) so it will fill the space nicely and at 3440x1440 it zings.
Those cards are pics of an actual card that I graphically cleaned up. The program fills the cards in automatically with your songlist. I'll take some hi-res pics as the build progresses.
It currently shows 144 songs on every page and the pages turn at the click of a button (with sound effect). The software also has a nice vinyl crackle for the first few seconds of each song.
I used DWJukebox for the software as it is completely customisable (and free).

I like it, I like it a lot :applaud: :applaud:
-
That is really, really cool.
-
Make it multi-touch.
https://www.instructables.com/id/Multi-touch-Table-1/ (https://www.instructables.com/id/Multi-touch-Table-1/)
-
Nice. I'm planning to do a Jukebox build next as well based on a Rasperry Pi with rpi-fruitbox and a Hifi Berry hat.
Will follow your build for inspiration
-
I like this project. Will be following your work.
matsadona: please keep us updated on the rpi jukebox, sounds interesting.
-
So I'm working on some scale diagrams at the moment. I scoured the web and the only dimensions I can find are length, width and height. Also no drawings either, only pictures which are very difficult to scale to due to the camera angle, lens etc. Relying on pics and Youtube videos unfortunately.
The issue with these jukeboxes is that they have two main speakers right at the bottom, with a very small opening for sound and a large panel of glass above. I really want to open that area up a bit if I can to improve the sound. Would be easier to build something else, but the missus has her heart set on this model.
Here is a side view of a crude attempt to scale. Once done, I'll set the photocopier up to print it out full size.
Lucky I'm not starting this project till 2019 ::)
-
The two speakers in the bottom, aren't they just the woofers?
I.e. I assumed that there are tweeters and mid-range speakers in the upper part (between the selection panel at top and the disc labels) .
For the lower bass you don't need that much openings. If it is a vented enclosure the port openings is quite complex thing to calculate as well - if you want it to be right with frequencies and gain (however not that hard when you know what you are doing and got the correct formulas).
-
I never would have thought of putting boobs on a jukebox. That is genius.
-
So that is why I always have loved speakers - subconsciously I have been looking at boobs ::)
-
Jennifer has a few of those jukes, and would be of the opinion you could simply move the speaker panel back a bit and enlarge it for whatever sized speaker you wanted if your heart is set on that....However by design they were built that way to add external speakers, BIG ,heavy subs and multiple mids as to spread the noise around the club....And possibly minimize space to add a receiver for wall mounts.
-
Hi Jennifer.
Thank you very much for that info. Just wondering if you or anyone else with a USC1 (Bandshell, not the USC2 Firestar as it is taller) would be able to provide me with some rough dimensions as indicated below. Anything would be very much appreciated. :notworthy:
Please?

Organised the PC now. Plans have been scaled. Almost ready to start my favourite bit...Construction!
-
Well it's 2019 so time to get on with it!
Below is a rough video of the setout. Concept seems sound so the build starts now. Sorry about the low quality video.

That's already nice. Definitely subscribing!
-
Any progress on this one?
-
Had a few design issues with it. Changed designs more than once, but kept coming back to it. All steam ahead from here. The build begins.

-
OK, so I have made some progress on this build. It's been slow progress as I process how to engineer each section. Anyway, here are some photos and more info.....

Slowly taking shape. More photos coming. I have adjusted the software and changed the speaker arrangement, including a quality centre speaker set among other things. Anyway more to come. Not a great deal of detail here as it's not even a box at this point.
-
Slowly...very slowly taking shape.

Lots of work to do...
-
That looks great. Nice start. :applaud:
-
I had to re-read the thread as I liked this so much. The software looks great. I cannot wait to see how it turns out. I am guessing you will make use of some RGB LED strips? You could make it looks very cool and retro. Can't wait to see it completed.

That’s a lovely shape and some very fine woodworking sir.
I’ve been trying to design an arcade in that shape for ages and couldn’t make it work. The accent piece inside the curve looks great and ties it together great :applaud:
-
Thanks guys.
I will be adding some LED, but not over the top. The Mrs has claimed this jukebox as her Christmas present. Not sure she realises how much more work is involved here before it is finished. Anyway, here is a bit more progress. I'll let the pics do the talking at this stage of the build. Happy to take feedback and/or answer questions though. :D

Got a bit more done. More filling of holes, more shaping etc.
Also got to build the centre speaker box which will lift the sound up off the floor. Love the quality in the old Jensen millennial series speakers. Don't make them like they used to. Speaker grill also arrived. I am using colourbond metal. It's actually a piece of gutter guard to stop leaves entering your gutters. I'll need to spray it black. Due to the pattern, you won't actually see through it unless you are at floor level. Pics below.

I love build threads with pictures - keep them coming :applaud:

So I made a control panel vector this week and had it laser cut to size including all the necessary holes. One panel is clear, the other is a lightbox opaque colour. I will be placing a translite between the two pieces and illuminating the underside for effect. The VU panel meters are a perfect fit.
I'm not trying to copy the old 1970 USC1 jukebox entirely, hence the VU's. Pics below.
Not doing this anymore. Going for an original look.

Managed a bit more progress on this one...
Things should speed up a bit from here.
Lightbox in. A translite will go in front of it and 5mm toughened glass will finish off the front.

This is so cool I don't know where to start. I wasn't really interested in building a juke until I saw yours.
I always like organic lines on things and this is awesome.
Is that MDF you used for the front facing panels with the arc in it? How thick is it?
Bobby
-
Thanks Bobby. They are very kind words.
I struggled to bend the ply so yeah, I went 3mm mdf but braced it with timber every 200mm to get the curve perfectly even.
I wasn't really interested in building a juke until I saw yours.
Do it!!! This is my favourite project so far...and I've made quite a few. Just wish I wasn't the first. I had no one to copy. :lol
First coat of epoxy done...

I have no idea what that is.. but you have my attention.. I like it :)
-
Trailblazing ain't easy!
Getting curves right is really difficult. And those look about perfect.
Look forward to seeing the rest of your build and watching you finish this off!

Going the extra mile to recreate the look of the original , I like it :)
I like this
-
I couldn't agree with Drnick more.
No idea what the material was on the original that created that rippled shadow effect on the back panel (or did you figure that out?) but no matter what the string and epoxy bit is brilliant.
Your fortitude on that detail alone is admirable.
-
I know this build is taking a while, but I'm trying to stay productive....honest.
I freely admit my photoshop skills suck. Anyway, here is the first draft of the translite for the control panel. Obviously the buttons won't be printed as they will be real push buttons. Light will shine from behind the translite to make it all stand out. Again, first draft...not finished.
The toughest part of this build is not seeing the original jukebox in person. I don't think one ever made it out to Australia. I am having to work off low res google images and youtube videos.
I scrapped the original idea of the control panel with the VU's etc and decided to replicate the original as best as my skills allow...
I have about 8,000 songs now. I make regular trips to the thrift shops (Salvo's etc.) and buy CD's for $1 each. I actually managed to pick up an original AC/DC Albert Productions CD this way which I note someone has on ebay for $150.
Get the CD's while you can. Once it's all on cloud, you no longer own the music.

Testing out the light strip with the colour lens added.
Looking forward to giving the whole thing a good undercoat and then start to get some paint on it.

Perspex fits.

This is the colour. I will diffuse the light coming through the hole with some lightbox perspex on the inside.

So the job I was dreading and putting off only took an hour or two and was fairly straight forward. Onward and upward.

Looks fantastic! Great work. I cannot wait to see it finished.

It goes about here.

Wow... been away for a while and get back to see this. Amazing :applaud: Now I must find some time to start my own build...
-
Thank you matsadona. That's very kind.
I think I need a better program to alter the size of the images. This one gives really poor image quality (Everything is actually square). Anyway.....
All sanded, and ready for some paint...

The two ends of the grill have been grinder back 12mm to accomodate the polished aluminium edging. She should look a bit different with her colours on.
Monitor mounts are in. I have also ordered the toughened glass for the front and top as well as the clear and opal perspex for the control panel. Just touching up the graphics for the front translite. Oh, and I had to order some square buttons to go with the rectangle ones as the original plan was to just use rectangle.
Anyway....onward and upward.
-
Looking real good! Love the attention to detail. I tend to get in a hurry and overlook that.
-
Glass arrived. Dry fit and it's perfect.

Completely not my cup of tea but it looks really good and amount of work and attention to detail is amazing!
-
Looking really good. Do you have any detail on how you got from a bunch of strings to that final product?! I'm not clear on how that happened!
-
Can I just say how much I hate using a slot cutter!!! Sorry, I had to get that off my chest.
Thanks guys for your generous comments. It is certainly helping me stay motivated on this project.

lots of sanding and painting.
I'm hoping to have this looking like a jukebox in the coming weeks.

Incredible work! we have 12 yep 12 and just got a 1971 Seeburg USC1 like your doing. Mine has a broken glass on the top right and was wondering if it was possible to get a copy of the beautiful template you built. Would be a lot cheaper for me to get a piece of glass and then have that printed on some type of plastic. Thanks and again GREAT WORK!

Control panel is coming together. Not an exact replica, however that is not really the intention. The buttons on the right will be for volume control, random play and to scroll through the various pages of songs.

A little more progress. Side trim is on, working on fitting the trim around the control panel and i've hooked up the LED lights in the switches. A bit rough at the moment but a work in progress. :)

I love attention to detail - keep it coming please :applaud:

Ok.... I want one. Takes me back to my favorite pizza place growing up that had a juke box, although it wasnt as nice looking as this!
-
The selection now playing panel looks awesome. :applaud:
-
I love the whole concept. :applaud: I have an Ami Rowe R87 Case no guts, and whilst looking for ideas come across one of the best authentic jukeboxes in yours. I have found DW Jukebox but love the look of your front end, is this your own concept or is it a obtainable download. Can you make available of help where I can edit? I need to put a 42” screen in to fill the hole so really need to be able to make DW fill the screen.
Just new to this forum so thanks in advance.
-
Very nice execution! Control panel turned out really cool. You picked a good design to emulate!
-
Looks great - the control panel really brings it all together.
-
Thanks everyone for your kind words. I have a few weeks holidays coming up soon in which I hope to finish it.
Yes, I will be making all my software available when finished for other users to use and improve upon.

This is good news, I can’t wait to see the progress and finished item.

This is my first time seeing this thread and I must say I am feeling serious sensory overload right now! I love all the new techniques and construction solutions to achieve the fit and finish. Looking great so far, I love it!

Thanks everyone.
I'm getting on with it now. Control panel wiring....

To be honest, the biggest slowdown has been deciding on a graphic for the front. Any ideas, suggestions would be much appreciated. Any help getting something slightly original via photoshop would be even more appreciated (1000mm x 365mm). I've been stuck on this for about 6 months!!!!
This is what the original looked like:

If you like VH, you could go with an Eddie themed style. :D

Seriously a master at work. This is cool. Did you manage to change software issues with the letters. Will still be interested to see your work.

I love the control panel (and everything else too). That looks very nice. Super cool project. Well done.

Very Nice! Well played.. (see what I did there?)

Just a quick question, how many albums have you got loaded? I have over 1500 but it gets so far and then from U (first letter of folder) onwards it will not load any tracks.
-
So.....I finally finished the jukebox. ;D
Here is a short video of the final product. Sorry about the delays...I had to engineer EVERYTHING from scratch with just the use of photos. I don't log in much so I apologise if I missed your questions. Onto the next project!! GM

This is simply amazing work! Looks like it's brand new straight from a factory! Goes perfectly with your awesome game room too. Well done! :applaud: :applaud:

Outstanding job. The software is really neat too - works just like a real jukebox!

Just watched the video - outstanding job on this!

Wow, that's amazing. What software are you running in it?

That is absolutely amazing! I love it. Looks old school but with very cool modern features. :) VERY well done!

Very impressive. I love how you added the virtual sounds to make it seem like 45's are getting loaded.

Absolutely astounding, I've been in awe at your workmanship throughout the whole build. Love your screen layout and was hoping you may want to share. I have built a few smaller units and adapted one of the original screens from DW. This serves for the smaller builds but I have a Ami Rowe R87 case totally gutted and was looking as a 42" or larger screen to fill the front void. I think your layout would be perfect.

Emphatic it is a old but free bit of software called DW Jukebox, it also gives the many options of changing the sounds hence the mechanical sounds of choosing the records. Plenty of front ends for it but Greenmans is he's own creation and a very good one.

Thanks!

Damn this came out great!
The look of that string/epoxy work and the lighting is just fantastic.
REALLY makes me want to build one so hopefully I can find some management software that doesn't choke on my sizable CD collection like all the ones I have tried.
Good on ya!

Thanks everyone for your nice comments. The software can handle unlimited songs.
So here is my challenge:
Build a full size jukebox and not only will I subscribe to your build and help you along the way, but I will also give you a copy of the software I use and help you to customise it for your build. I really want to see some jukeboxes on here. I mean, flight decks are fine, but where's the music?!

Oooo....
I may wind up testing the time limit on your offer, but once I get past the other things I have already started I will take up that gauntlet for sure.

I swear this hobby is going to be the death of me. I'll add it to the list. Ugh.

Stoked!
I only have 4 projects I need to finish first.
;D
The GOOD thing about that is it gives plenty of time to come up with some outlandish cabinet design.

There are plenty out there!! I do love the Seeburg Sunstar.

That Sunstar is cool.
After quite a bit of digging since you began on this journey yourself, I found that nothing screams arcade/pizzaparlor/dive bar to me like a Rock-Ola 454.

The biggest challenge will be sorting out a screen to use I think.
Is there an aspect ratio requirement that I should be shooting for?
I know that you found an unusually wide screen (which maybe un-obtanium where I live) and wondered if that was necessary to be able to use the software you have so graciously offered up.
;D
-
Sorry Bobby, for some reason, I'm not getting email notifications when people post in this thread. I'll have to sort that out.
Looks super cool! Any screen will work, you just have to change the config files, the background image and the placement of each song card (I can help with this), however these look awesome, and proportionate with an ultra wide screen.
Looking forward to the build.
Paul.
-
Thanks Paul!
You'll know when I have found an adequate screen then
:lol
Was your missus satisfied to claim her jukebox in time for this Christmas anyway?!
I jusy went through the whole thread another time.
A remarkable piece all around.
-
She loves it! :)
-
I am really getting interested in buidling a full size jukebox reading this thread! Would really like to get the software for building a proof of concept 👍 Thanks alot for this great thread

Very slick build.

I've proved the concept. Time to get building!
-
I actually found a pair of original 454 speaker covers which were in decent shape and now in my posession so I am getting closer to go time here myself.
I also decided I really needed a router table so when I am finished with that I think I can finally start!
Sourcing a good set of speakers that won't cost more than the rest of the build is proving to be interesting though.
-
That is absolutely amazing! I love it. your skin is fabulous. Can you share the skin file. i have a 29 inch widescreen.
Thanks to share this with us.

I love your front end and have been knocking up something similar, This will be housed in an old Ami Rowe R87 carcass with either as 42" or 50+" Screen. I have one issue though I cannot change the now playing font (dot matrix) as I cannot see where the setting are to change this particular function. I have loaded replacement font (.ttf file) in both the parent folder, skins/font folder and added a line in the .skn file but i keep getting DM output???? Any notes on how this may be achieved?

Would love to see a build thread on that R87. I have an R85 Starlight that I'm trying to get working, but if I can't, it will be gutted and converted.

When I start I will put a thread onto the site. I have nothing apart from the carcass. I brought it from somebody who stripped the whole internals for another project. They even sold off the glass front so I will also need to deal with that.

So I have worked out the Dot Matrix issue, found I was missing a bracket around the font settings, have sat and re modified the skin as I realised the numeric settings is limited to 100 or precisely 0-99 making the first skin having to be alpha numeric which would have to include "I" as there is no way that I can find to exclude it and it is to similar too "1" which may cause some issues in selections.

Very nice. I must remember to upload my front-end next time I am playing the jukebox.
Well done Gazzer on the dot matrix issue. I wondered why my chosen font didn't work.
Let's get building guys. I wanna see some new jukeboxes!! You'll never regret making one of these. I just love mine!!!
Off topic, but once I complete the slimline jukebox, I'm thinking of making a mechanical pinball machine from scratch. :o
-
Ooo...
I would love to build a traditional pin.
That's a horse of a different color for sure.
I'll be starting on my jukebox soon anyway!

For me this is the most spectacular project ever with a digital jukebox!
Congratulations man!

If your after removing certain letters like I and O there is some lines you can add to skin file to remove them.

Bonjour a tous. Essai d'envoi de message 1.........

Bonjour a tous.
