Title: Overwhelmed in linux forum. help me out? :)
Post by: milkit on March 30, 2011, 09:00:16 am
I have a couple of dell pcs that are basically both p4 2.8-3.0 systems, 512mb ram, basic dells.

My background, I am a power PC user, my linux knowledge is slim to none.

I am wanting to install some kind of linux OS and have decent front end that auto loads. Mame is really my only concern, not so much other game consoles.

I use maximus arcade on PC builds generally.

I've read over this forum and there is all kinds of info but Im just having problems putting it all together. I cant decide what is best. Can someone maybe point me to a good how to for what I would like to do or possibly just make some recommendations?

If your linux knowledge is slim to none, you may be better off using a stripped down version of XP, like TinyXP.

You could use Lubuntu, wich is a light version of Ubuntu, and works great with 512 mb.
I use Wahcade as front end on my cabinet, it autoloads at startup.

I'd download the groovymame live cd that bitbytebit has developed.  It's come along now where newbs like me can make it work.  It has 2 front ends to select from on the cd...advancemenu or wah!cade.  I'm using wahcade and can't be happier.  My cab did have winxp, Hyperspin, and soft 15khz, but now it's just the groovymame live cd setup for a hard drive install.
