For the side art I made some stencils using NASA font that says "GAME NOT OVER" I will paint it on with red paint.

Cool, I like that marquee alot.  Any pics of the sideart mentioned? What is the CP going to look like? Also, let's see some more pics of those holes! Now THAT is craftsmanship!

I'll try to draw something up for the sideart to post. I'm not going really graphic on it just the words GAME NOT OVER in read and a few orange lines is what I got in my mind right now.

and since I don't see this as being my last the side art would just get covered up by the next machine to sit beside it....

as for the CP artwork. I havn't really got anything solid yet still kicking a few ideas in my head.

I am going with a two joystick 3 button layout with a trackball in the center. I'm not a big fan of frankenpanels

Yeah man, If you'll look closely at the picture where there's supposed to be a "proof" you'll notice (however slightly) that although its a definite picture of him, the cab has been photoshoped.
I'm positive

Actually, the pic of HIM looks photoshopped.  It's realistic and all, but when you blow it up super-size, you can see the faint pixellation around the edges of his body  ;)

Plus he doesn't own pants that color ;D

Train Wreck

Rush Hour Accident

Judging by the ass hats who lose their mind and can't seem to help themselves from gawking and rubbernecking at these 2 items, your thread should shoot to the top in number of viewings.  Barring that, try "Fast Lane To Disaster".  It'll cause everyone to think that you're speeding towards one of the other two ideas above.

I am taking my control panel to a friends house tomarrow, so that we can use his router recess the joysticks and buttons so that they work properly...

I have found that because this project has taken so long I cannot find all my buttons at this time.....

The half dollar aboce the trackball is where the spinner will go....

The two brass tokens are where the buttons for the trackball will go.....

the two silver tokens are where the player one and player two buttons....

There are supposed to be 4 admin buttons but as of right now I con only find two.....

the trackball is going to be a Kinsington trackball hack.....

I will have to find my detailed instructions that I had for my keyboard hack or figure something else out....

Title: Re: I really do have a project - CP critiques please
Post by: markrvp on December 29, 2005, 12:34:32 pm
Looks fine.  With a smaller panel you have to keep the controls in tight.

One thing to consider is to get rid of the dedicated mouse buttons above the trackball and just hook the player 1 buttons 1 & 2 up to the trackball left & right.  MAME uses this default mapping anyway (P1 button 1 = LeftCtrl OR Mouse 0).

Here's what I got done with the control panel so far today....

I didn't do the player 1 and 2 buttons because I cannot find them right now....

I also didn't do the admin buttons, I'll do them this weekend...

as far as the trackball i'll need to look at it again...I had it all figured out at one time but since I took so long to get to it I forgot what my plans were.... I'll re-think it tonight at work....

I thought the joysticks looked like Nintendo.  Are they 8-way or just 4-way?  Do the buttons work well (or can you tell yet)?  They look like the same mount design for leafswitch buttons, but they just swapped in microswitches.

I had to because the shaft for my joystick was too short and the buttons wouldn't work properly if I didn't...

you can possibly find a friend who has a router and borrow theirs or take it to your friend (with a 6 pack) and ask him if he could help you with it.......

The short answer is no it is not necessary.  I've got Happ Competition joysticks and pushbuttons mounted under 7/8" thickness of CP and they work perfectly.

I remember they had some big discussion in Ohio or wherever the Wright Bro's were from about NC putting that on their plates.

Just caught up with this... are you really keeping your cab outside?  Probably not but the comments imply this.

Also, is that the final paint job?  Doesn't look finished.

Good stuff, though...

Everyone who is a redneck lives in NC has a shed.  He had to kick a few cats and chickens out of it, but..... ;)

Missin, is that an actual sticker, or is it that vinyl you can pull off and move from place to place if need be?  I don't wanna have it stuck on my work truck, but I WOULD like to sport it on my work truck ;D

I want a shed.  I need storage space but want to use my basement as living space.  Plus, it's much harder to yank a project out of the basement into the yard.  I'd have to bring it up and down a set of steps.

 :banghead:

FYI I suck at coming up with a design for my CP... I'm not happy with anything I've created... I want something simple that blends in well with the yellow cabinet and the old skool marquee.....

I'll give another stab at it this weekend...

I did get some new buttons from AC, as I never did find my original P1 & P2 buttons... two of the buttons he sold me were black, so I dug out the vinyl stickers nannuu made a long while back and applied them to the buttons... I must say they look very sharp... I'll post pics of them later...

I decided to replace the other buttons I had planned on using from the VS. control panel with some of the newer buttons and the newer buttons are much wider so looks like I'll be doing some modification to the CP... While I'm at it I might work on figuring out how to attach the trackball...I'm using a Kensington Expert Mouse trackball so I need to check out ften's site (http://fathertom.net/mame/trackball.html) again to see how he did his...

oh I did manage to clean out the shed a little bit so that I could move the cabinet around.....

...I'm using a Kensington Expert Mouse trackball

Why?

Mainly the price factor.....

I picked up one really cheap on e-bay when I originally got the idea of building a cabinet... it's very playable for Centipede and Crystal Castles which was the only reason I needed one (aside from navigation)... I'm not much of a Golden T fan o(r any golf game for that matter) so a trackball for that game wasn't a big issue for me to spend extra cash on for a trackball and encoder...
