Title: MaLa development?
Post by: Antix on May 16, 2016, 03:34:29 am
Can anyone tell me, is MaLa development totally ended?

I want to update to the new version of MAME, 0.173, but it causes so many issues with Mala. I see that there is a workaround of sorts available, but just wanted to know if it was worthwhile persisting, or if I should really just focus on finding a replacement?

I was looking at HyperSpin, but dont really like the idea of having to rename all my ROMS.

Mala is a great frontend, just be good if it worked 100% with the newer versions of Mame.

Cheers
Antix

Mala 1.820 is the last version.

Check this link (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,145865.msg1517120.html#msg1517120). Perhaps, you can solve your problem.

Greetings.

Thanks, yes that is the version that I have, and that is the workaruond that I was talking of :)

Shame, it is a really nice front end, that just works. No having to rename roms, or sign up to get flv movie files or anything.. that said, i can just convert all my mp4 to flv if I want to use hyperspin.... so maybe.

Will keep looking to see if I can find a replacement FE I guess, in the mean time, will give that work around a try.

Antix, can you update with a reply if you find something you like better?

Just my luck... I've been running a MaLa setup almost forever -my vert cab is running a very early version in Windows 2000 with a 1.9ghz AMD Athlon.
I just started building a Win7/MAME64 setup for it. Was hoping to migrate MaLa right over. Today I went to download the latest version and the page causes a virus/malware warning in both Firefox and Chrome. I came here to read up on it and found this.  :-\

I'm going to push on just using MAME 173's built in browser with no front end while I try to get the rest of the system configured.

Not Ended :-)

Can you bullet point the issues with the new versions of Mame?

Hi Loadman,

I have a bit of an issue with Mala on my setup.

It's a Mame gun cab and uses a usb2gun I/O board, which connects the guns & controls to the PC.
After a few minutes of playing a game, Mame loses focus and the Mala game select menu reappears.
Others have had similar issues when using Ipac's/Jpac's if they leave mame running without using controls for a few minutes. If they use the controls then this doesn't happen, but it doesn't matter if I use the controls or not, the problem still occurs.
I've tried the focus logger plugin, the latest stable release and the beta without any luck in solving the issue.
Any ideas please?... Thanks.

Hey Loadman, would be really great if development was not ended!  I spent 2 days on Hyperspin and just gave up...

Some issues are: the massive virus warning your site gets, which blocks browsers, i was only willing to even try to bypass it on a crappy old laptop.

controls.ini not found, seems controls.dat is dead these days?

it tries to create mame64.ini all the time, but i think it actually uses mame.ini

The issue mentioned above with the new version of mame.xml

Some improvements, like specifying exact size for things, rather than trying to drag until the dimensions in properties are exactly right...

when you have videos on win10 that play just fine on any software, including windows media, you still have to install 3rd party codecs to get them to work in MaLa

I have some others.  If development is really not stopped, let me know, and how I can help!

Thanks

Dave

Dear Mala authors,

If you no longer are motivated to update Mala, please consider releasing the source code.    Having it would allow us to fix little issues like the the new Mame XML format.     This front end does a lot of fantastic things that others don't.   It's still the only FE I can find that correctly handles a 3 sided cocktail table, for example.

The decision is yours, of course, but either way, thank you for this great work!

As for the virus site warnings, ignore them.  The reason for that is explained on the site - there's a key hook DLL that's incorrectly flagged as malicious.   That, in turn, will cause the site to be listed as potentially hosting malware.    I had no actual trouble with any of the content on the site.

I have just updated my cab to win 10 so I  will need to sort them out so testing would be appreciated

Thanks,
I can't release code as I made a promise to original author.
Apart from that it is riddled with many 3rd part libs that are not cheap.

Been a while since I checked in on this, real life eh....

So I moved to Hyperspin. A lot more effort to "get it right" but it is there now and working well enough with the newer versions of MAME.

If Mala was updated and working 100% again, I would likely go back to it though. Not that I have time to work on my cab, or even play on it these days. :(

Is the Mala site gone ? I'm looking for the newest version (beta or full) ?

IT's still there you just have to bypass the warning page about it being a malicious site ( IT's a false positive report but USe at your own risk ) - http://malafe.net/index.php?page=download (http://malafe.net/index.php?page=download)

When you go to downloads (as shown in attachment below) Right click and choose Allow Download and it will then download properly ( The virus alert is regarding the MalaKeyhook.dll which triggers the anti virus due to the way it works and since that file has not been removed the Browser has flagged the site as malicious to protect you ! )

Either way, thank you.
I'll DL it tonight for a new project I'm working on.
Thank you

ISPs have blocked it in the past.  For a while it would come up on Comcast at home, but was perfectly fine on Verizon at work.

Yeah site is down. Stopped paying ISP.

No donations = no site I guess :-(

I also still use MaLa. But I didnt update anything on the cabinet, so no need to change anything.

It just happens now that I want to use a newer mameversion with updated romsets.

The "0 games found" workaround was the only thing I needed. Except that everything still works like a charm.

Thank you very much for this fine peace of software :-).

MALA is amazing ive been using it for years, would happily donate if it meant minor updates and to fix the 0 games issue
i just love how simple it is to use and setup, tried many emulators and mala is still the best one to me
