I want to pick the collective brain of the BYOAC driving forum. The Expert track on Daytona USA has always been my Nemesis. After years of struggling to get to grips with it I feel I can now do the majority of it semi-competently with the exception of one bit - I've never been able to find a foolproof way of tackling the final hairpin bend by the space shuttle. I normally tend to come off the accelerator just as I'm coming up to it and then brake and shift from 1st to 3rd, initially steering hard to the left and then counter steering the other way to try and stop the car over-steering. It always feels entirely down to luck if I make it around it without spinning out or going too wide. I've also had some success just slamming on the brakes and dropping down to 3rd, but most of the time when I do this I seem to lose too much speed and start getting overtaken by those pesky rubber bandy AI cars as I'm heading up the slope towards the bridge.
How do people here tackle it? Has anyone got a technique that normally works rather than feeling like there's a certain amount of luck involved?
-
I do the same as you described, except go from 4th to 2nd gear. I'm probably still breaking a little after I've dropped down to 2nd, but I can't 100% remember. I'll try it on my cab this evening and let you know.

No one else going to chip in? Surely there's got to be some expert Daytona players on here...?

I say, refer to the faqs on gamefaqs, or check out other record runs on youtube for the best strategy.

The trouble with checking out other people playing it on YouTube is that whilst you can see what they're doing gear-wise, you can't tell what they're doing gas and brake-wise. That's a good suggestion about Gamefaqs though, I've just had a quick look on there and found a track guide.

This is such a complicated course to navigate. I remember feeling extremely overjoyed and proud of myself for finally coming first place on this track a couple years ago on Expert difficulty. Haven't attempted it since then and if I tried now it'd take me forever :lol
The last turn is indeed pure luck. I remember either spinning or going too wide. The way you have to drive this track is so different than the previous two tracks. Braking and 2nd gear is required if I recall correctly. Reminds me of the ridiculously complicated steering mechanics and car physics contained in Daytona 2. Man, talk about a rat's nest of a puzzle trying to figure out the weird car behavior in that game. :dizzy:

Indeed mate, Daytona 2 is indeed a very different beast to the first one, definitely more of an emphasis on having to use the brakes and the gears rather than just the gears alone (mostly) you can get away with in the original Daytona. And then you have the most difficult one of all... Scud Race and the accelodrift.

Yup. The physics in both it and Daytona 2 has really hampered my enthusiasm to get deep into them over the years sadly, to be brutally honest.

Well, I tried that corner on my cab a couple of days ago, and I can do it pretty reliably by:
-completely lifting off the accelerator and braking hard on the straight just before the hairpin, while steering slightly left so the car starts to slide left
-getting back on the accelerator about 30% and steering hard left to get traction on the hairpin
-counter steering to straighten up and gradually accelerating and moving back up the gears up the hill to the start/finish.
If all goes well I'm slingshotting around the hairpin and overtaking cars on the way up the hill.

Cool. So, what are you doing gear-wise during this?

Man, you've really got me thinking here Mr.Thunderwing... I vaguely know what I do, ('cause drivin's I bit like breathing.... you just do it without thinking about it and it keeps you alive), but to analyze it and go step-by-step, I'm gunna have to fire it up and have a few go's at it... but I also find that on racing video games, (as most others do), I tend to "Push it" a bit tooo much, 'cause, like I've said to my son, the good thing about video games, is that you can hit the "off" button, and no one's in jail or hospital :lol :lol :lol

I struggle too much on the medium course to give advice on the expert one :p

Sorry, I totally forgot to say :embarassed:

Nice one! Cheers for the detailed reply.

Just to clarify, were you's talking about the left turn after the checkpoint as you come up to the space shuttle corner (with the blue turning arrows on the left side of the course)?
Also...(I know it's "off topic", but...) I've been meaning to ask you, MrThunderwing.....does this look familiar?
-
Nope, I was referring to the actual space shuttle corner itself. I can generally do the corner you're taking about, with the arrows, about 99% of the time.
I've no idea what the cable picture's about I'm afraid. I'm kind of curious about it though, specifically why you thought it might mean something to me...?
-
It's a "XA1541" cable I made to hook up a Commodore 64 floppy drive to a modern PC, I checked out some of your youtube clips (cool stuff) from your link you've got on you're posts... you sound like the guy that did a few video's on how to use the "Starcommander" app for it.... Sorry, my mistake :dunno
As for the corner you're talking about.... I fired up my Daytona USA test bench setup and had a few goes on "expert"... I do pretty much like "2Huwman" posted... (nice walkthrough, by the way)...
...but if you do "hook it in" too tight when you pick 2nd... and start to spin... you can always just "go with it", (turn into it, then "catch" it), and pull off a 360 spin and keep going in the right direction.. (not that it's ideal for lap time and track position, but...)... it's one of the few corners you can get away with it just for a bit of fun :lol
Cheers guys.
