Actually it's funny I did already beat my own record several times and even have the .inp files. I did re-send them in a long time ago to try to bump my score up but they never changed it. However to me more importantly I still have on DVD breaking the Non-MAME actual arcade dedicated on my Gun.Smoke machine from Nov. 2nd 2008. I might send it into Kelly Flewin in Canda since he originally reviewed my MAME score... or perhaps beat the record during a public performance in NH this year. The only thing that I'm not really excited about is playing Gun.Smoke in Funspot, NH with a bat top micro-switch joystick eww!

Also a side note, but I recently replaced my LCD with a 24.8'' CRT and need for MAME 106 to be the same as pixel aspect for MAME 129. If that makes any sense, basically the image for me seems too squeezed now. It looked perfect when I had the setting to ROL / Rotate MAME because I had my LCD on a vesa arm, and then the ratio was actually 9:6. I can't seem to figure out what ratio I need to have it running on my 4:3 CRT without looking soo compressed.

Yeah this game has the tendency to do that. One of my friends said the same thing.

Attached is a funny review of Gun Smoke from April issue of "Computer & Video Games" from the year 1986. Let me know if you want the entire Magazine in .pdf

My cab is still premature.  Bubble Bobble and Wboy looked ok, but I couldn't get Gunsmoke looking right.  All because of this competition, I ended up taking Vista 64 off my PC and rolled back to XP 32 so I could use Soft15.  I've got some reconfiguring to do, hopefully will be competing again next week some time.

PS:  I don't know why I waited so long to go back to XP and use Soft15.  Everything looks 100 times better.

There's a few gotchas you should know about before going to the trouble.  Since our monitors are horizontal, and gunsmoke is a vertical game (unless you are turning yours sideways) you can't run the native resolution for it.  Usually you can get pretty close, and you definitely have more options than without Soft15Khz.  I've got all my horizontal games looking spectacular, but I've yet to mess with Gunsmoke to see if I can get it looking good.

Also, your Nieman is (probably) not a digital multisync.  This means that you can really only configure it for either 15Khz OR 31Khz.  In otherwords, you can configure it to work with low rez games in mame at 15Khz, but if you're popping back to your front end and it is running at 640x480 (31Khz), it just aint gonna look right.  You need digital memory in there to remember the screen settings for each resolution, and I don't believe the Niemans can do this.

I think if I had a Nieman, I'd probably just stick to 640x480, use the default video setting of D3D (don't turn off filtering), and use set prescaling to 2 to sharpen it a bit.  This is what I was doing before I made the switch and it looked pretty decent.

I said you can use any version for this just a tip the (US Set 2) levels 3 and 6 are swapped. So when your on level 3 using US Set 2 The Indian Chief (which really is supposed to be level 6 on all other rom versions)you can earn alot of pts. but it's alot more difficult than the traditional level 3 (The Ninja. on US Set1,World,Japan set). The Indian Chief Level has many hidden dragon flies in the barrels worth 10,000 pts. ea. Also along with Stars, & cows... and when you kill the enemies on that level they are worth more pts. Also the Indian Chief I think is worth 85,000 pts alone but he is usually difficult to beat, just try to retain one of the 3x horses found on that level! Its a good early way to rack up your score but the level like I said is alot more difficult.

151050 round 3

Recorded on .129 (32-bit)

I thought I had never played this game before, but memories came flooding back to when I was maybe 12.  My neighbor rented it on the NES and we spend a whole summer day passing the controller back and forth.  All the little things in this game bring back specific memories of that day.  I love when that happens.

The NES version was cool. Actually the story took place "In the town of Hicksville..." Which is literally minutes away from my house.

Ive also posted this a few times but any ways I think it's hilarious, here's a funny song from the NES version entitled Bullet's And Buckshot:

Glad I decided to play one more.

258050.  Had Mr Boomerang down to 1 block.  He seems way easier than Mr Ninja.  INP available.

If anyone was wondering, Gun.Smoke looks pretty darn good using Soft-15Khz and running at 352x256

edit: i'm dyslexic

I prefer Advancemame, as it runs it at 400x256@60hz.  Of course, I can do 18khz, heh. I have to get warmed up on this game, again, though my best ain't above 250k.

I'm out with injury.

YES!!!  I may actually have a chance!!!

Just kidding.  Hopefully nothing serious?  A bad case of Nintendo thumb?  Get well soon, man.  You should use your downtime to rebuild your Wonderboy site (that is such a great site).

I am pretty addicted to this game.  There is definitely a difficulty hump that you have to get over, but once you understand how things move in this game, it can be quite intense.  I think I'm proficient enough at this point, I'll probably switch over to US set 2 like mrclean says and pad my score out a bit.

I hope someone steps up and starts pushing things... mrclean has to be pretty underwhelmed by our scores.

Haha, nothing serious.  :) It's an existing problem, but the intensity of trigger action in Gun Smoke has brought it out.  I'll take some down time and be back for round #13.  >:D

I'm really enjoying these game competitions, it's keeping me more active in the rest of the forum.

Having had lots of different arcade monitors, a can say the only one that i was able to get the right aspect ratio on was the billabs 27" CRT because it has a max resolution of 1024x768 which gave it plenty of room to fit.

It comes to mind to ask which direction he's thinking is squeezed. I tend to think 4:3 vertical games on a horizontal monitor look a little fat - meaning from side to side. 'Squeeze' to me means vertically shorter than the available display field of the monitor.) That's why, when using hwstretch or D3D, I've often used 5:4 or 7:5. I think I like 7:5 best, and natively set my screen geometry similarly.

i'm now on to a new project.. i put down MAME for a little bit now trying to work on my Bubble Bobble Project. I snatched it inside a robotron 2084 cabinet. not Gun.Smoke related.. but this is keeping me busy...

I'm going to keep it Bubble Bobble.. because I personally LOVE that game. so far I used some lovely paint thinner, and used a palm sander to get it down to just about the bare wood. still a long way to go but the end result should be good.

312550, not very far into level 5

I feel like these runs of mine are pretty pathetic.  I'm suprised no one else is posting.  Unless Dr Frag is just faking his injury and he's going to swoop in at the last minute and crush me.

ahh mrclean

you make it sound so easy.  this game is pretty brutal.  I find what helps more than anything else is entering a kind of tantric state to help you track the 5000 things happening on screen at the same time.  especially these insane boss fights.  even knowing the boss's pattern doesn't help you when guys can appear randomly at your sides at any time and end you

I found that trying to directly attack the boss from early on is best, but sort of like isu says, it can be a beast getting clear shots. I got time for another tonight.

suggestions for the next round?

I'm thinking:

Rolling Thunder
Kung-fu Master
or
Gladiator

I'd love to do some rotary stick games... but that'd probably put most of you at an unfair advantage.

isucamper won this competition #12. And shall choose the next game for round #13. Since it's a ghoulish number perhaps splatter house, ghost and ghouls, ghost and goblins hehe not a requirement But Id really like to keep this prize thing going ideally something related to the game, but can simply be NOS Joystick, Buttons etc.

Congrats isucamper!

Gun.Smoke is a hard game and I completely SUCK at it. I tried to enter this contest, but never came close to achieving a score I'd even consider posting.

Either of the G&G games would definitely up the difficulty level and will cement the fact that I will not be entering. :)

(Edit: Funny, I won the Ghouls 'n Ghosts competition. I guess I didn't like how I sounded above and did something about it.)
