Hello from Maine,

I have been writing a "picture book" cabinet building tutorial for the new builder.

As it is a work in progress, constructive comments and sensible suggestions will be carefully considered, so let me know what you think.

Click the link below to check it out :

As of today there are over 30 chapters, and over 1300 pictures.

Thanks !

Looks pretty good, I haven't read through the whole thing yet, but I love how there are tons of pictures.

Here's a suggestion since it's written for a newbie.

On http://www.256k.net/spystyle/index2.htm
The line 20' total of 2"X8" board "two by eights"
You might want to say 20 feet.  At first glance it might look like 20 pieces of 2x8 because the picture shows a pile of wood.

or mention what ' and '' mean.

I also noticed some html code at the bottom of
http://www.256k.net/spystyle/index5.htm

more good stuff for me to read! Definately with something like this and the Project Arcade book any idiot (including me!) can build one of these.

what would help even more is if you had a price and where you got stuff breakdown. Haven't finished it yet so I don't know if it' s there!

Craig,

Can you post your Defender cabinet plans on your website, or make them available somehow?  Looks great!

Thanks,

love what I've seen so far...  (still loading the images).

quick notes:

consider adding more links for joysticks / buttons to www.therealbobroberts.com.  GREAT reviews by EVERYONE and the prices are always cheaper the happs.

consider adding links to http://www.ultimarc.com/  both supply great encoders.

Consider having someone write up a quick how to for using a true arcade monitor.  Also write a paragraph on why not to use SVGA monitors (or ask others to).

now waiting on page 3

That's a silly attitude...

I agree.  It's cool that a book has been published, but I really can't think of anything that would be covered in a book that hasn't/couldn't be answered here.  I'll run by and take a glance if I can find it on the shelf, but I don't see myself buying it for information that's already here.  Depends on how much it costs I suppose.  ;D

Yikes.  I didn't realize it was that big.  Maybe you should put links to pics instead of having them displayed.  That way people will only download the pics they want to see.  You could also maybe make the pics smaller and save with more jpg compression.  Good luck!

Aside from getting a new provider, tough call.  Maybe byoac could add it... or you could zip the whole thing up and distribute it via bittorrent or some such.

Craig, remember me?  I sent you a set of plans for building an upright cabinet in September of 2003.  Your picture looked familiar, so I checked my old emails and sure enough - it's you!

From the sound of it you've come a long way since then!  Way to go!!

Tom
P.S. When I click on the NEXT link on your site I just get tossed back to the index.

Your next link on page one no longer works.

I browsed through your site earlier today and think its nice work.  As far as I'm concerned, there can never be too many free sites like this out there.  Pictures are worth a thousand words, especially to a novice.  I like to post a ton of pics of my projects.

Criticism: Create small thumbnails of each pic, linking to the larger image.  That'll tighten your pages up and greatly reduce the bandwidth requirements.  I don't generally want to wait for a dozen or more large pics to load up.  I like to pick and choose which ones I open, plus printing a 'page' of your site out will just chew up the paper.

Nice job.

OK all the errors should be fixed, just let me know if you find anything out of order.

spystyle@yahoo.com

It's unfortunate but I had to scale down the JPGs considerably to make them fit on that site, if anyone knows a good free webhost with unmetered bandwidth and a 20 MB or higher limit please let me know.
The tutorial was meant to read like a picture book, with many large clear pictures, the text is just there to explain what the picture is all about.

Hey man, great tut!!!

Man, i'm missing a couple of parts... I'm saving them in a WebPage Single Archive, for a future reference.

Can u mail me the other parts. I could only look at the verizon pages :s. The other ones are busted due to bandwidth limit.

Hey Craig --

I would be happy to host either a mirror or the main copy of  your site. Let me know if you'd like to go that route. We can try the original version for now, if the bandwidth gets too high we'll look at going with the thumbnail version with large versions when clicked -- that's how I do most of my pages. You can have pickaname.arcadecontrols.com (like unclet's site), or www.arcadecontrols.com/pickaname, or if you buy a domain name I can host that as well.

Kudos on the good work!

Let me know -- cheers!

Until we work out a permanent home for it, I have a mirror of the original site here:

It'll stay up until a permanent version goes up at spystyle.arcadecontrols.com ...

skimmed through the reply's, but I've been meaning to drop you a note for awhile now...

That's the best walkthrough I've seen so far online, but it NEEDS AN INDEX, where you can skip to chapter 1,2,3,4 etc... When looking for one specific thing (print your own art) I had to go through the first 5-6 chapters just to get to it.

Also, at some point, you may want to do a "lite" version for those of us who don't need a picture of a hammer :)

But, all in all, as I said, the best online BYOACabinet walkthrough I've seen, so don't think I'm complaining or anything! :)

You could always do "forced browsing."  Change the URL in your address bar to reflect the chapter you want to go to.

Chapter 7 -> http://spystyle.arcadecontrols.com/index7.htm
etc...

Hello fellow mainah!

I read through it when I first stumbled upon it looking for ideas.  Every noob needs to read it I think...alot of great ideas.  I especially like how you broke up the side art to print on a regular printer.  I had never thought of that.  Great job and can't wait to see the rest of it.

I have updated chapter 6 "Constructing the control panel"

Here:
http://spystyle.arcadecontrols.com/index6.htm

I'm convinced that method is simple and effective.

Anyone care to comment?

I think most can figure it out but Control Panel Construction is Chapter 7 and linked here:

Dispite reading the FAQ I can't figure out the Shazaam! key....

Isn't the Shazaaam key just like a 'shift' option?  You know, if you hold down the shazaam key while pressing any other key, you get the 'alternate' (or shifted) function assigned to that key.... right?

I fixed the link :) Sorry about that. I had moved stuff around on the website (kindly provided by Saint) and forgot to update the link.

And yes, I have been selling my tutorial as a PDF on eBay for a while, I posted it on a couple other sites but forgot about those .. thanks for reminding me :)

But free for you guys of course :)

Have fun and keep me posted,
Craig

Ahh, that explains the request to not link to the site.

You should be able to make a couple of bucks a day with google ads if you start to advertise your site. Might be an option vs. selling on ebay - not sure which is better for you. Just be sure to read up on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) first.

Thanks.

Anyone have an opinion on the value of that book compared to Project Arcade? . Or is buying both a sensible option?

DEFINITELY buy Saint's book. I'm sure many of you who are new to this wonderful hobby don't realize that were it not for Saint "DIY Arcade" hobby probably would have faded into history like "Texas Instruments home computer" and "Zips sneakers".

As far as I know he almost single handedly popularized this hobby. I think Saint and Lusid were among the "founding fathers". As far as I can guess buying his book helps to support him and his family, also this site we enjoy.

Thanks Saint !

Make it fun :)
