Title: Neo Geo Restore
Post by: Malenko on October 30, 2007, 12:51:40 am
meh this is a side project and not MAME related. I already did the fun stuff like gutting the cab and scrubbing it clean then coating the inside with primer. I then scrubbed the MVS metal part then painted it red, so it looked neat. I still need to paint the front and get the vinyl for the sides and front redone. Anyone have a stock/repro Neo Geo CPO for sale?

TO DO LIST:
buy & install new matching locks
Clean the insides
Prime the insides
clean and repaint the over under door
repaint the 2Slot MOBO case
print/buy mini marquees
buy & install MVS vinyl
buy install CPO
replace joysticks & buttons
buy and install external memory card reader (and phone jacks)
replace EL lighting with florescent/LED lighting
maybe replace the CPO I got since its not for a multislot
buy more MVS games!

first got it:

before I painted the inside:

after paint, and I moved the board closer to the front, so I can swap games by opening the CP:

a few from the opened CP:

cleaned up wiring, and some games installed:

SamSho II and marquee:

Marquee:

those mini marquees are printed from http://www.arcadecrusade.com/gallery/v/minimarquees/ (http://www.arcadecrusade.com/gallery/v/minimarquees/)  and I still need to replace the blown EL marquee lights and put a florescent  fixture in its place.

Nice...  :applaud:  I have a 1-slot mobo, I'd love to get my hands on a Neo Geo cab to put in.  That link to the mini marquees is nice too.  I had one for my SamSho 3, but I can't find it now.

Looks great!

Here's my 4-slot MVS setup. I have it in a Japanese candy cab, and the only things left that I need to do is to replace the marquee light and get a new set of keys and locks.

I *LOVE* the candy style cabinets, I'd prefer it over what I have. I still need to change the locks, clean and repaint the over under door, get a control panel overlay, new sticks, new buttons (I re-used old ones I had) and I need to paint the front and sides... then of course buyand install new side vynil. oh and I almost forgot I need to find a mem card reader and head phone jack slot thingie too. Im never gonna get it done :p

Im in no rush to make the machine pretty though, I can play it and thats all that matters right now.

Any ideas where to get a CPO cheap?

Hmmm, doesn't mamemarquees.com print overlays for the Neo Geo cabs? If not, you could ask around the neo-geo.com forums to see if anybody has any NOS or repros for sale. There's a VERY healthy buy/sell community over there.

bought *another* NeoGeo cabinet ( a dedicated 2 slot) and swapped control panels. I need to get a new piece of plexi cut. there is some tear through on the overlay but I think I can mask it well. I snagged the other machine for the bomber man cart and control panel, and Im reselling it to my cousin for the same amount I paid for it (and giving him Samurai Shodown 1 as well)

the cig burn is on the plexi not the panel, so when I get the time and money, I'll get a new one cut/drilled

heres some random shots of MVS vs MAME

Actual MVS:

onboard MAME:

as the thread drifts away from the Neo Geo restore.... lol

umm the onboard card kinda sucked, no graphical enhancement at all, the nvidia does it better with the same settings.
actually the nVidia makes it look alot more like the MVS but the colors are still a little off (I "tuned it" to ultimate mortal kombat 3 so the MVS isnt as accurate as it used to be)

redid the front, made it red again (previous owner made it black). Looks a lot better IMO
I'll take more pix and post em up when the new side vinyl gets here. I don't think I need to paint the sides , they look in pretty good shape. I also repositioned the 2 slot board so I can change the games a little easier..... still looking for a 4/6 slot board though

Distant  shot:

closer up of the front:

I never said who I got the stickers from, and I wasnt going to until it was fixed  :P

just so everyone knows, its cool betweens eccs19 and me and things like this do happen, fortunately its on the side where the MKII machine hides most of the sticker  :laugh2:

more MVS games are on their way from ebay! Real Bout 2, stakes winner 2, and KOF 96
now to start getting the odd numbered years of KOF. I see a multislot CP on ebay right now but the bidding is at like $50 with 5 days to go so I dont think Im snagging it; cant afford to

That new side art and the rest looks great.

You should get neo turf masters, it's a pretty decent game if you can stand the high voices that they have on it.

removed the MVS EL panels and repalced them with a 21" fixture and a tiny 8" one to back light the neogeo logo

a cool side effect is the light is directly above the glass for the monitor, so it lights up the entire control panel area in the dark!  :applaud:

eccs19 came through with the replacement vinyl, I lucked out and got the I fixed with the extra I he tossed in the envelope  , so I could play around with the extra MVS logo.

heres the fixed side:

usage of the spare MVS logo:
please note the board is a little crooked but isnt going to be move, so I(*cough* my girlfriend *cough*) centered the logo by where it looked in the middle, which looks better in person then the picture dictates.

I also rewired the insides to match to what I saw online in "factory" cabs, its alot closer but not perfect....still better then how I got it.

My MVS carts:

3 Count Bout (Fire Suplex)
Aero Fighters 2

Kabuki Clash
King Of Fighters 94
King Of Fighters 95
King Of Fighters 96
King Of Fighters 98

Ninja Combat
Puzzle Bobble
Real Bout Fatal Fury
Real Bout Fatal Fury 2
Samurai Shodown

I would be curious where you got the overlay as well. I am getting ready to restore a Neo Geo cab, but I am going to do it from scratch. The one I got for a $100 was a conversion and a bad one at that.

As a newbie, I would like to throw a few questions out to the community.

1. The wiring in this old cab is circa 1988. What modifications to a new Jamma harness would I have to make to make it compatible with neo geo?

2. I have found several sources for the Neo Geo cab conversion decal (red square/white lettering). Does anyone know where I could get a rub on decal made of the logo to avoid the potential issue of color mismatch?

3. On that same note, does anyone know the name and the manufacturer of the shade of red used on a neo geo cabinet?

4. Also, I have been having trouble finding "detailed" building plans for a neo geo cab. I found a guy who built his own, but no actual measurements. If anyone has a link to this info, please let me know (any versions).

Thanks in advance for any info,

deathbot

If you need one still, I'd trade you for your 2 slot + some cash.

1) not entirely sure and Im not the guy to ask, as both of my cabs were pre-wired dedicated Neo Geo cabs. I know I can just plug jamma boards into the cab and they work fine though but the 4th button on neogeo and the fact they are mono make them non jamma compliant

2)What decal where? the side art stuff I get from ECCS19, its just the white part though, and its awesome.

3)Closest Ive found is the red spray paint by Krylon in the H20 latex series (as seen on the metal part of the mobo and the sides of the cab)

4)I can measure anything you need from either cab, but again, I have 2 actual cabs not detailed plans. check jakobuds?

Nope, I still need one. How much cash you lookin for? remember, you get the color matched metal cover with MVS logo =)  Where you live, cause the closer the better

I'm in the Dallas Metromess.

I have a couple of 4 slots that would be good candidates for painting as they have some rust on the metal cover. $40 with the trade. We each take care of our own shipping costs.

MVS cabs just rock. I just wish I had a control panel with the straight layout of buttons. My 2-slot (MVS-2-25) has the "curved" layout. It also has an shiny silver aluminum control panel that I've not seen anywhere else.

I wouldn't recommend plugging JAMMA boards into a dedicated MVS cab. Most of the differences are minor or switches that won't make a big deal. The bad one is audio. When I first got my 2-slot I tried a couple JAMMA games in it and the heat sink on Mr Driller 2's amp got EXTREMELY hot.

Dedicated 2-slots, 4-slots, and 6-slots all use a variant of the JAMMA specs. 1-slots are standard JAMMA.

Pretty much any tech info needed can be found at hardmvs.com.  Here's (http://Here's) the download page with their comparison of JAMMA and MVS pinouts.

Malenko, keep up the good work.

Lemme give you some help with the URLs... the one in your post is broken.

http://www.hardmvs.com/html/PCBcompare.htm has the comparison between the different models of boards, including what kind of connector pinout they have.

http://www.hardmvs.com/html/Downloads.htm is where you can download manuals for the different models of boards.

and

http://www.hardmvs.com/manuals/Jamma2NeoGeo4SlotPinout.pdf is the pinout showing the differences between JAMMA and the MVS pinouts.

Thanks guys,

All the info has been enlightening and helpful. So, I should be able to rewire a jamma harness to a neo geo motherboard, correct ? OR is there a source for reasonably priced MVS harnesses?

If you have a soldertail connector just add the wires needed for the extra buttons & sound connections... or buy a JAMMA connector that has all the wires attached.

It's the same connector with just a few wires added.
