Title: A cheap source for Print quality photos
Post by: RayB on September 21, 2005, 04:45:11 pm
Those of you creating high-resolution artwork for your CPs and marquees etc, I thought I'd point out a good site for cheap photos: http://www.istockphoto.com

That site is similar to higher-end stock photo providers, like http://www.photodisc.com but they are cheap (usually a buck a photo, unless it's marked FREE).

The reason to go for one of these services is that for print you need stuff that's REALLY high-resolution. Not the low-res "made for web" crap you get through Google Images. Plus you're helping out amateurs make a few bucks off their photos and illustrations.

Another source, for those who want space shots are , well, space sites like NASA, Space.com, SOHO and other missions. Usually they have extremely high-resolution images available of planets, galaxies, nebulae, and the sun.

Do you know of another high quality source for movie/TV based images?

I need a couple for my cabinet.

No, that would fall into copyrighted images and likely cost a fortune to get. Check out http://www.gettyimages.com

I'm actually looking for color publicity stills.I found the one I want on eBarf, but the price is a tich high for a simple 8x10 photo. About double the "normal" rate.

Great resource, thanks RayB!

One that we use around here is www.photospin.com and it is subscription based, not too shabby for the cost... their search engine is a little wonky though.

I wanted to add links to those space ones...

SOHO is a satelite/probe orbiting the SUN. It takes images of the sun at varying wavelengths and can see details that would not be visible to the naked eye. There are some amazing shots that show what a turbulent firey ball the sun really is. (You have to hunt around the site for the larger "TIF" versions. Try the archives).

SOHO's home page: http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/

The HUBBLE telescope project is a great source of some amazing shots of galaxies, nebulae, etc. Here's a directory of examples: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/image/0408/
