Title: What would you do with a Virtua Fighter
Post by: Ian on December 21, 2016, 12:07:08 pm
A Virtua Fighter came up in my market and I was going to pull the trigger but I am at a loss for what to do with it. The Machine looks to be in Great shape. I love the Virtua Fighter series but the original one is pretty weak compared to the others. But it also has some historical value (which is a big deal to me) since it's the first polygonal fighter ever made. Another problem is that it has a Medium res monitor, it's based on Sega's model 1 board and is not Jamma so plug and play options are very limited.

It would cost a few hundred dollars to convert the thing to Virtua fighter 2.

What would you guys do?

I picked up a Virtua Fighter earlier this year, it was sort of a grail game for me in a way, as it made a big impact on me when i first saw it in the arcades back in 93. Did you know the game was one of the most expensive upright arcade games to buy at the time ($6,000 US in 1993!). I like the game for what it is, even if its a little weak compared to the later VF titles. The mirrored marquee looks beautiful! And the side art is very unique with mirroring as well. I wouldn't pay a lot of money for the cabinet just to mame it, its big and stupidly heavy. If you can get it for dirt cheap, then go for it. But personally I would leave it alone, or at least make a different control panel for it and keep the sideart on, stick the original CP and marquee aside and work with that. then if you ever want to sell it off as original down the road, you've got everything ready to go.

No... I am not looking to Mame it... The guy is asking $600 for it. I figured I could talk him down.

Buy it, cut it in half, put in a LCD, put in a 60-n-1.

BOOM!

If it's a grail game, and you don't find it up for sale often, get it. My 2 grails are Galaga and Star Wars and I got both and I don't think about the cost.

I paid $380 Canadian for mine, complete. Just a little damage below the coin door where it looks like someone kicked it a bit, its been patched up in that one spot, but otherwise solid

Huge cabinets and the 32X version is superior.  Namco spent years trying to flog them for $175 out of their arcades.  Plus the monitor is a weird resolution.  It'd be a pass for me, dawg.

it was a medium res game, definitely limits what can be swapped in. If you had a darksoft Multi  STV cart / mobo I'd say get it , or if you *really* like Virtua Fighter

Pabst Blue Ribbon is an odd choice of keyword spam.

I wouldn't want to be ripping that up. Buy it, if you don't like it then sell it next year for $25 more than you paid for it. Dedicated everything just keeps going up in price.

He is firm at $455.

I'm going to pass until it drops closer to $350 I think. I love VF and I love that Cabinet and that Marquee (back lit mirrored) but the funds for something like that are tight right now. If this was VF2 I probably would have found the funds though... lol

I just bought two cocktail cabs, and fighters aren't my thing. I like them, but I totally suck at them.

You should definitely come out here and hang out. We'll wait until after we meet at the MGC.

I am a little old school. I like to shake someone's hand and look them in the eye before I trust them with the location of the bat cave.

You could be one of those creepy guys that fills their house with arcade games. ;D

If you do end up with it, you might want to add some cooling fans for the board. I don't know if it's true, but I heard that these boards get hotter than they can handle at this age.

(Section about Model 1 boards starts around 10:13)

Again, just what I heard. Dunno if it's true or not.

I would also be the kind of guy to buy it.  Get it out of my system and re-sell. It's a piece of history and I loved it back in the day but it doesn't need to find a Permanent Home in my house.
