Title: Malenko's 3rd NeoGeo restore
Post by: Malenko on December 28, 2015, 08:11:58 am
I plan to keep this one, forever, right next to my MKII in my rape dungeon.

This is how I got it:
(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=136713.0;attach=341239;image)(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=136713.0;attach=341241;image)(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=136713.0;attach=341243;image)
yes, it came with a 161 in 1 cart. First thing I did was remove the 2 slot marquee and put in my bust a move marquee that Ive had for about a decade.

Tried to remove the paint and save the side art:

but I couldnt save it, it was too tore up, so I removed it.

So here is my favorite part. The corner was broken off. Previous owner put some bondo on it, held it in place with the tmolding, drove 2 nails through the molding to hold it in place, then covered it with more bondo. When I pulled the tmolding (and the nails) the corner just fell off. Good times.

So fixed that and the standard, patch/sand a bunch, prime/sand a bunch, patch/sand again, then prime/again:

The other side I skipped the paint removal and just removed the vinyl with a heat gun and putty knife. Took significantly less time, and exposed me to far fewer chemicals.

patch,sand,prime  times infinity

front before, strip the vinyl, patch the holes, patch and prime a ton, you get the idea.

One last once over with the sander and final primer coat:

I have a few more coats of red to put on, but this is how she stands right now:
(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=136713.0;attach=341293;image)(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=136713.0;attach=341295;image)

I have the tmolding ordered, and I contacted stpcore about the artwork (side art, extra MVS label for the mobo, new headphone vinyl, etc) . I am probably going to keep the original CPO, its in surprisingly good shape.  I also have a 2 slot motherboard to replace the 1 slot that came with this cabinet and I have a replacement powersupply that already got delivered.  The old one sounded like a chopper from nam.

Planing on going back with MVS decals?

Looking great.  How did you patch that corner?
Traced the other side, cut it out with a skill saw.
Dowel joint, glued/clamped. sanded even, patched with bondo. Cut the tmoling slot with a dremel because I dont have a router :/

Nice job as always.  It is amazing how much better that red looks.
Thanks!
This red is a little more red than the actual NeoGeo red. I always thought the Neogeo color had a tad too much of an orange tint.

Planing on going back with MVS decals?
Yeah the logos are going to be cut out vinyl decals like I used on my old 4 slot restore (from 8 years ago)

Looks amazing! Don't suppose you could sell me a set of Neo Geo decals? I have a MVS-1 25 id love to restore. On mine instead of MVS it says system though. I can live with that if it means it would look half way as good as yours when done. :D

That red is gorgeous. Great job. Best restore I've seen in a long while.

Looks good so far!  Love that red!

I recall Jasen's Customs offering MVS stickers, but I didn't see them on the site.  Maybe you can e-mail him?

I did see cart stickers though.  They look pretty slick:

I PM'ed you stpcore's contact info , he'll hook you up.

I'm getting the art from Ken aka stpcore, I found the AI files for him and he said he can cut the vinyl, no problem.  I do like the MVS labels, but 2.50 a pop is too rich for my blood. I kinda like my banged up labels, adds character :p.  I got lucky removing the front vinyl and the serial number sticker lifted right off. It was the only original sticker I cared about.

Since my last post I have sanded and painted 2 more times, I'm going to check the paint when I get home from work for even coverage and how smooth the top coat is. If its as good as I hope then its on to the next  step. I'll pull the controls off and repaint the CP metal black, and repaint the top, monitor area, and back of the cabinet black as well. I wont be doing more than 2 coats of black though, I don't care that much about the back and top of the cab.

Just FYI, this is the paint I ended up using (I liked it better than the custom paint I had mixed):

And here it is in low lighting:

and with the flash on (ignore the dust and reflections, the side is solid red)
Tough to tell its got 2 more coats of paint than the last set of pictures.

White Tmolding finally arrived, side art is going to be a few more days.

You can see the little wooden stand I built to have the cab off the ground so I could paint the bottoms easily.

And here is where I think she's going to stay, right next to the Area51/Maximum Force cab

That's a really nice looking job Malenko!

I love that white t-molding with the red paint. Really pops. Looking forward to seeing your side art when it comes in.

Added

GanGan aka Aggressors of Dark Kombat (worst NeoGeo game ever?)
Art of Fighting
World Heroes
Samurai Shodown 1

all for $85 shipped.

GanGan is worthless, and AoF is ok. WH is pretty fun and SS1 is one of my all time faves.  If anyone is selling any carts, especially in a lot, PM me and shoot me some prices!

Finally got around to putting the art on the other side.......

Well, kinda. New razor sliced the backing paper like butter.....right through the MVS logo, so this side is missing it. Totally my fault. But the good news is, you cant see that side because its next to my Faster than Speed cab and I've gotten a few more carts.

The collection now stands at:
161 in 1 Multigame (this is practically never in the machine)
Art of Fighting
Baseball Stars Professional
Baseball Stars Professional 2
Blue's Journey
Bust A Move
Bust A Move Again
Gan Gan (aka Agressors of Dark Kombat)
King Of Fighters `99
Last Blade
Last Resort
League Bowling
Magical Drop II
Metal Slug 3
Ninja Combat
Puzzle Bobble (aka Bust A Move)
Puzzle de Pon!
Samurai Shodown
Samurai Shodown II
Samurai Shodown III
Super Sidekicks 2
Thrash Rally
Top Players Golf
View Point
World Heroes
Zed Blade

GanGan is probably the worst game on the NeoGeo and Top Players Golf is a close second.

The white on red is a huge improvement over the black on black.

I got a a Neo Geo 2 slot a couple weeks ago, and I was wondering if you could send me the info on where to get those logos and what color red to use for the cab?

Also, mine came with Bust a move again, and I ordered the 161 cart for it after getting sniped on ebay 12 times for various games.

What did you do with the labels on the front?  Did you make new ones or use the old ones?

Love this cab, Great job Malenko!

Out of interest do you know what joysticks/buttons were native to these cabs?

Ide like to get the proper ones for my bartop project if I can.

Used the old ones......for now.

Factory sticks were either happ ultimates or happ comps, depends on who you ask. Ive personally gotten more Neos with Ultimates than anything else. This cab has Sanwas and I lub them for neogeos.

Cool.  If you find a source/method for new ones, I'm in for a set.

My serial number sticker is peeling and other one looks faded and nasty.
