Title: Wonderboy Artwork (My WIP Sample Added)
Post by: mike boss on July 28, 2015, 06:55:50 pm
I just did a custom Wonderboy mala layout.
I think it came out really nice.
But I noticed when I was on Google not much fan art for this game.
Sega gets so little love.

I was wondering if anyone had any cool Wonderboy artwork ?

I need to work on a Wonderboy bartop project and I am stumped!

Sorry to disappoint ! LOL

This is what I'm working on. I'm still very new to drawing in Photoshop/Illustrator.

This is after watching a sh*t ton of YouTube stuff.

That series comprised one of the strangest sets of games I ever played.

perhaps you might want to trace the art using this image.

That is a great image. Tank you for posting it.
I'll give it a try and see how the trace comes out.
I've just started drawing with Photoshop and Illustrator....but I'm getting the hang of it.
The better the source material, the better the result.

I'm happy to say the customer is happy with how the art is turning out.

I'm going to tackle a trace of the above image later today.
I had tried to trace the "Wonderboy" lettering from the marquee........WHOA!!!!!
A little too advance for myself. I was unable to do it.
I just did not look right.

I can trace "Wonderboy" no problem. But the character's gradient is too much. :dizzy: :dizzy:

If you could trace it for me that would be awesome.
Even just the orange part of it would be a huge help.
I'd simply stroke the rest and use matching colors.
Would not be an exact representation of the marquee, but good enuff for the project I am doing.
I should be able to do the banner myself (or close enuff).

I saw a tutorial online where a guy did the batman logo, simply doing half, then copy and paste the layer.
That is what I would do.

Thank you in advance for the help.

Very thankful.

I just read this thread today for the first time, and I always wanted a dedicated Wonderboy. So after some time and research I saw the one that FunSpot in NH had which was inside a Stern cabinet, and I almost built mine in that cabinet until I discovered what It was originally in...  I finally got a dedicated Wonderboy in an original Sega System 1 cabinet (Yes that's what they are called just like Atari System 1 Cabs) which is what originally intended to be in... They have these huge grid type designs on the side art with large SEGA letters on the cabinet. They are very solid cabinets and built well. Sadly mine at some point in it's life was converted to something else so i converted it back to a Wonderboy. The bezel is a generic blue / red line essentially. The game also has an instruction card. I used a generic NOS Sega CPO which seemed to work well with the side art. I know that the game also had JUMP / ATTACK RUN button stickers which I don't have. I had a glass printed marquee from Rich at thisoldgame.com..... A few Sega games shared this cabinet not only "Wonderboy" but, "Choplifter", and "My Hero" to name a few...

as for the artwork I've seen a few incredible custom stuff but I really kept mine as close to original as possible. Good luck on your Wonderboy build such a great classic !

For this Wonderboy project everything is pretty much custom.
The sideart was traced from the above posted image.
Marquee is also custom, the CPO however was recreated (and slightly modified) from what I'd seen online.
I'll post the image later.

Here is what I've got done.
The sideart has changed and I added the wasp (bee) and octopus from the above posted image.
I also removed the Wonderboy lettering from the side art, and added the Sega logo.
I have one version with some grass, and one w/o the grass.
I may be working on some trees like in the game itself.

Any and all feedback welcome.

Thank you

*** I'm still new to drawing with Photoshop // When I can I will post the revised artwork ***

nice I dig it !!! side note but I seem to start to tank around the level 5-3 area / 6-1 around that point. Are you good at Wonderboy ? What's your High Score ?

pop this funky JAP instruction card on it....
