Title: New CRT Emudriver/VMMaker/Arcade OSD download, documentation and discussion site
Post by: Calamity on October 13, 2014, 08:08:25 am
We've created the new site Eiusdemmodi (http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/index.php), at http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/index.php (http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/index.php)

This will be the official site for CRT Emudriver and its related tools: VMMaker & Arcade OSD, so here you will always find the latest versions for Download (http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewforum.php?id=7).

Besides, you will find Documentation (http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewforum.php?id=1) and Support (http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewforum.php?id=8) sections, which we expect to eventually become a complete reference for the usage of these tools, as well as other topics regarding video emulation accuracy.

Last but not least, this is a place for Discussion (http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewforum.php?id=2) on everything related to emulation accuracy, emulators other than MAME, home systems, CRTs, lag issues, etc.

Support for GroovyMAME/UME and all related topics will continue as usual here in BYOAC.

In our opening, we present the following news:

NOTE: Due to spam prevention, forum registration may be eventually disabled. If you want to register an account and get that or another problem, our contact address is postbackweb at yahoo dot com.

I am impressed, well done.

Unfortunately I do not have a recent card with AtomBIOS fw to give it a try now.

By the way, I did not spot any EDID related section in the source code. Do you know if the modification will allow the BIOS/EFI boot to honour the EDID modeline?

Cheers

About ATOM-15: a critical bug affecting older Radeon cards (the X series at least) has been found and fixed. There's a new version 1.1. Please make sure to update and DO NOT flash the X series with the old version! Users of HD models don't need to worry, it's just a problem related to older models.

Thanks to ID4 for reporting this.

That ATOM-15 tool sounds absolutely incredible! If I patch my HD4650's BIOS with this, I literally have zero reason to use my AVGA now.

ATOM-15 is extremely exciting.

Pardon me for not checking, but is this open source? As a long time Linux user, an eventual Linux port would be great.

I'll be testing it out in WINE soon, either way.

Hi,

thanks a lot Calamity for the driver and the BIOS patcher !  :applaud:

I'm facing an "EDID" issue with my Radeon HD4850 on Win7 x64 :
The only way for me to get valid15Khz modes is to plug an LCD screen until windows has booted and then replace it with my CRT (Hantarex 9110).

If i boot directly with my CRT plugged in, i've got a blacksceen when windows has loaded up.

Is there any workaround for this issue actually ?
Do you think this VGA EDID emulator (http://www.ebay.fr/itm/EDID-DDC-Emulator-Adapter-VGA-/361062300025?pt=DE_Computing_Monitor_AV_Kabel_Adapter&hash=item5410fd7979) could do the job ?

Hi,

what is the difference between "Set as desktop mode" and "Set as default display mode" in Arcade OSD ?

Regards

"Set as desktop mode" applies to the current display device, e.g. "\\.\DISPLAY1", while "Set as default display mode" applies to the generic default display device "\\.\DISPLAY". I added the second one in an attempt to get it working on cards with monitor detection issues.

  - [Emudriver]  Added fix for certain modes being reported as "native".

  - [VMMaker] Version properly reported in window caption.

Notes

- First test reports on Windows 10 indicate BSOD. Do not install in Windows 10 by now.

I've had a look through the ini files etc, and i THINK i know what to do, but i want to be sure so i don't stuff anything up

New beta 4 (http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=1009#p1009)

[05/01/2016][CRT Emudriver 2.0][CRT Tools 2.0][beta 4]

  - [Emudriver]  Fixed installation in Windows 10, still may show a BSOD on install buf after that it seems to work (thanks to R-Typer).

  - [VMMaker]    Ati legacy: fixed polarity settings. This reverts the fix for halved refresh & interlaced modes from beta 1.

  - [VMMaker]    Ati legacy: new option to "Extend desktop automatically on device restart". Meant to help users during monitor setup. (to be improved)

  - [VMMaker]    Ati legacy: now desktop layout is preseved after device restart (to be improved).

Notes

- Please, only test the new tools if you are an EXPERT user. Novice users should keep using the old versions by now.

With regards to the issue with halved refresh on interlaced modes (W7), the new GroovyMAME builds revert the previous fix. In order to avoid the problem, do either one of these things:

Case 1.- If your monitor worked fine with tools 2.0 beta 3, this is because it has no problems with positive sync polarity. Use the new beta 4 tools, and edit your monitor preset to force positive sync. e.g.:

    crt_range0  15625-15750, 49.50-65.00, 2.000, 4.700, 8.000, 0.064, 0.192, 1.024, 1, 1, 192, 288, 448, 576

This must be done when creating the modes with VMMaker, not only in mame.ini.

Case 2.- If your monitor failed to sync with tools 2.0 beta 3, you need to keep negative sync polarity (default). In order to run interlaced games at full speed, do either one of these things:

               a) Enable frame_delay (e.g. -fd 1) If you have a half-decent machine, this will work smoothly
               b) Force -video ddraw

For non-GroovyMAME programs, there is no current workaround if you are in case 2.

The problem is triggered when the vertical sync polarity is negative. The horizontal sync polarity doesn't seem to matter. Hopefully at some point this new information will allow to find the point in the driver where this nasty feature is rooted, but chances are low right now.

[07/01/2016][CRT Emudriver 2.0][CRT Tools 2.0][beta 5]

  - [Emudriver]  Added missing dlls for ADL library (thanks to Fonki for reporting). Issue affected HD 5xxx and newer cards. It caused VMMaker not recognizing the driver.

  - [VMMaker]    Fixed problem that forced custom modes to be 32-bit only. Solves issue with ZSNES and probably others. (thanks to tom5151 for reporting).

[23/01/2016][CRT Emudriver 2.0][CRT Tools 2.0][beta 6] (http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?id=295)

  - [Emudriver]  Fixed critical bug in driver that caused the system to get frozen randomly upon display device restart.

  - [VMMaker]
  - [Arcade OSD] Correctly assing sync polarity to AMD HD 5000+ cards. Because AMD documentation is wrong, VMMaker where assigning the polarities the wrong way. This must be the direct cause of most out-of-sync issues reported till now. What happened is that GM assigned positive sync instead of negative, and vice versa. This is fixed now, but you'll need to update your crt_range definitions. By default, negative sync (0) is what should be used in most cases. Thanks to intealls for doing proper checks with an oscilloscope and R-Typer for double-checking.

  - [VMMaker]    ATI legacy: now interlaced modes are reported with full refresh (not halved) in W7+. This should solve problems with games that use a hardcoded 60 Hz refresh.

  - [VMMaker]    Better alignment of modeline generator to GroovyMAME's.

  - [Arcade OSD] Fixed Powerstrip support.

Thanks to R-Typer for testing!

It depends on the video card family, the sync polarity has to be switched for HD 5000+ only. Legacy cards already had the right polarities before beta 6.

Awesome Calamity!

"There's some overscan, which I'll focus on fixing at a later stage."

Any chances we will see a guide in the future that explains how to fix that?

I'd like to, however writing guides is super time consuming, and I'd say Windows XP doesn't have any secret at this point, basically the new VMMaker provides a GUI interface for the options you used to find in the ini file of the old version.

Hi @Calamity,

I think there is a small issue in  CRT Emudriver 2.0 beta 8 for 7870XT card.
The atiilhag10.inf and atiilhag10.inf files contain an extra " before the = for AMD679E.1 device.

Code: [Select]
AMD679B.1  =  "AMD Radeon HD 7990 (CRT Emudriver - WDDM v1.20)"
AMD679E.1" =  "AMD Radeon HD 7870XT (CRT Emudriver - WDDM v1.20)"
AMD6800.1  =  "AMD Radeon HD 7970M (CRT Emudriver - WDDM v1.20)"

Works great with my 4350, so far (only recently upgraded to latest version). Only problem I've noticed is that videos in MaLa are very flaky. They usually play very choppy with a reduced fame rate, but sometimes they play fine. I have no idea if this has anything to do with CRT emudriver v2, though.

Just bought a 5450 for my next MAME rig, on the advice of Calamity.  :) Be interested to see if I still get the video issue.

Yes I get this too.
I've tested both a HD5970 and a HD4670 and am finding that I get low FPS animation in menu scrolling, themes, and videos in Hyperspin. It appears to happen mainly in interlaced resolutions, specifically 640x480 which is what HS is set to. It also happens on the desktop, which is also 640x480, and is particularly noticeable when you drag windows around. Problem doesn't occur if I select progressive resolution. Problem also doesnt occur if I uninstall CRT_Emudriver.

I havent been able to pinpoint the cause. When I was testing HD5970 I initially thought perhaps it was GPU's downlocking because of Powerplay feature, but I disabled ULPS and Powerplay and forced consistent clocks with MSI Afterburner and results were still the same. Then tested HD4670 and getting same results.

Just as a side note, I tried installing CCC only, after CRT Emudriver (as another had tried) but it wouldnt install. I wanted to try to get it to install so I could play with some settings and see if I could pin down the low FPS issue.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, both cards have had BIOS's modded with ATOM-15.

Interesting. My problem is in interlaced mode too, but I haven't tried it in a progressive mode, TBH. I haven't flashed my BIOS with ATOM-15. I also tried to install CCC to have a poke around, but failed.

What's interesting is that if I install CRT_Emudriver, say with the HD5970, but don't generate a res list then HS scrolling is super smooth. But if I generate a list and install it then the problem occurs.
I though maybe this was a by-product of the issue with halved refresh rates in Windows 7, but what is also interesting is that when I boot up, HS menu scrolls smoothy for about 5 - 10 seconds and then goes choppy, so I'm thinking twice about that. I have HS shelled so Windows boots straight into it.

I still need to do more testing.

Confirmed here. I had tested HS but because I don't use it regularly I just thought the animations were like that.

The problem is linked to Aero. If you use a desktop theme without Aero, it doesn't seem to happen.

But because that's not an option starting from Windows 8, the other solution is to simply not use a custom video mode for the desktop. This is only possible through EDID emulation with the HD 5000+ cards. Just remove the 640x480 mode from user_mode.ini, then create the mode list and install it. You'll still have the fallback 640x480 mode that comes from the emulated EDID, which doesn't have the issue.

Alternatively, you can create an EDID with a non-standard resolution like 648x480 in order to use it for the desktop, so you can still have a customizable 640x480 mode for MAME. However current VMMaker doesn't allow this yet. Next version will allow you to select the default EDID's mode.

Doh! Of course it's Aero. I've had issues with Aero before and this completely slipped my mind. Thanks for the heads up! I guess it can also be disabled on a per app basis if there are some that insist on having Aero on in their desktop.

Just installed Win 7 but before I install super resolutions, what's the difference between these and the normal user modes?

Pros
-----
Smaller mode list -> better overall system performance (long mode lists make system slow during boot and mode switching in W7)
Superwide resolutions -> perfect horizontal centering, much higher refresh accuracy (~7 times more accurate)

Cons
-----
You need a faster GPU to use frame_delay without tearing.

Sweet! Sounds like super resolution is the way to go then :D
What's the minimum requirements in terms of memory on graphics cards to be able to use frame_delay without tearing when using super resolutions?

So it there any downside to using using new 5xxx or 6xxx series gpus compared to older 2xxx and 4xxx series cards??. I know a while back the older series card allowed for more and lower res presets than newer cards, is this still the case?

Blurry interlaced resolutions, that's all. Besides this it's better to use HD5xxx or higher because new cards does not suffer from halved interlaced resolutions for example Taito Type X games works correctly.

Thank you so much for the guide "Installing CRT Emudriver 2.0 - HD 4350 - Windows 7 - super resolutions"!

I just had a question and wondered if I may have done something wrong. Please keep in mind this is my first time dealing with all this.

I completed this step correctly:
Then I unplugged the PC monitor as instructed, and here is the step where my experience differs from the guide:
When I clicked on Detect, nothing happened. My main desktop didn't move over to the other input. So I wasn't able to complete the rest of that part of the guide.

I just went right into setting up MAME. I launched games and they seemed to work correctly. I reset my PC and it loaded the desktop at 15khz on my K7000 arcade monitor.

One thing I noticed is that when the VGA from my Jpac was plugged into the DVI>VGA converter in the beginning of the guide, the picture was more stable. Now that it's plugged into the VGA, it appears to be more shaky/jumpy on the desktop (actual games display just fine).

Anyway, just curious what I'm missing out on or what I may have messed up.

How do you people get to install the 240x160 resolution for GBA emulation?
Although it is present on the INI I load for the modelist (an INI with combined user-modes + super resolutions) it never gets installed - using latest CRT Emudriver , win7/x64 and a 6450 vga.
Is this a limitation of the card/driver?

ATOM-15 v1.2 (http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=389#p389)

- v1.2 - September 2016
    - Detect blank space as a combination of 0x00 and 0xFF characters.
    - Reduce by 256 bytes the size required by the BIOS hook, now only 572 bytes of blank
space are needed to patch the BIOS.
    - Fixed bug that caused wrong checksum correction in some cases.

Since I cannot register on the other forum, I am curious about what happens if you flash a card with the ATOM-15 BIOS and the motherboard has a UEFI GUI BIOS, does that still work in 15khz? or there is some fallback low-res mode ? Or it works but you need a 31khz screen?  ???

ATOM-15 is not guaranteed to work with UEFI bios. It may work as long as the UEFI code uses VESA modes. If this is the case, notice that probably UEFI will require the VESA mode 1024 x 768 to be available. This will be true if either the 25 or 31 kHz ranges are used.

Unfortunately 1024 x 768 is not possible for the 15 kHz range, so this mode is disabled when only the 15 kHz range is used. In this case, entering the UEFI setup will result in a black screen.

Personally I didn't test it but since most of modern motherboard has also integrated video it's not a problem. You can still access UEFI using build in video card.

After succesfully installing CRT Emudriver, it detects my Radeon 7870XT with the name %AMD679E.1% (no info about CRT emudriver installed). Windows 7 Device Manager detects it with that name as well.

I have  a little problem with CRT Emudriver and Windows 10.

Everything was going smoothly on my CRT until I've decided to connect back my LCD TV through AVR.
The screen started flashing every 10 seconds, the driver was switching back and forward between Radeon HD 6450 and HD 7450.
What's more, I had even a few BSODs in the menatime. So I've decided to go into safe mode, uninstall everything using DDU and boot with disabling driver signature enforcement (on win 10 x64 for some reason enabling test mode does not allow to install unsigned drivers).

So I got it now working but I'm far from being happy. The screen is scaled down with greenish border around (1920x1080@60p through HDMI) seems like overscan to the max. Also I can see I've lost full range color and I have no way to set it back from limited range as all the ATI tools are gone.

If there is anyone experienced in installing CRTemu on Windows 10 who could shed some light I would really appreciate some help here.

It sounds like W10 was trying to restore its stock driver. I know some guys tried CRT Emudriver on W10 successfully but that was some time ago, and due to W10 upgrade policy now your W10 could be very different from the OS they tried.  Anyway once we have an version of the Emudriver based on newer software we surely get better support.

That's more than certain it was as you are describing. Disabling automatic driver installation in DDU seems to help.

But that picture through hdmi is useless. Do you know by any chance if it's possible to change the overscan and color range without ccc.exe somewhere in the registry?

Nevermind, I found it in the registry under the following keys:

To set the pixel format back to RGB Full Range two keys need to contain the data below:
Code: [Select]
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000\DAL2_DATA__2_0\DisplayPath_1\MODE_1920_1080_60p_CEA861\Adjustment

RangeRgbLimited REG_BINARY
10 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000\DAL2_DATA__2_0\DisplayPath_1\Option

BestViewOption_Hdmi REG_BINARY
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
02 00 00 00 01 00 00 00
08 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

To reset underscan the following key needs to contain the data below:
Code: [Select]
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000\DAL2_DATA__2_0\DisplayPath_1\MODE_1920_1080_60p_CEA861_EDID_EE11_3E_1010101\Adjustment

Underscan REG_BINARY
10 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

if there are keys starting with MODE_1920_1080_60i these need to be changed as well.

@Calamity It would be nice if the installer could do it for the user as the driver is stripped off the catalyst tools and not everyone got enough patience like me to dig through the registry :D

Very nice finding. I don't think that could be done through the installer because as you see the keys are customized for each installation (resolution, monitor, edid). A future version might include CCC, although I hate the idea honestly.

Today I decided to flash my 6670 vga - ATOM-15 worked fine and all reading/flashing was made from DOS . I was surprised to see that the Asrock UEFI BIOS actually works in 15Khz mode ... there is a catch though: the screen is separated in 4 "pieces" and it moves when the mouse goes near the edge of each "piece" :

That's very nice of Asrock, having thought of that eventuality beforehand and have an implementation ready for it. I have a bad concept of Asrock from my own experiences but certainly those details are worth a reconsideration.

My guess is that someone over there thought of the possibility of a user running a 640x480 screen - a good thing :D
I've had several cheap (under 90e) Asrock motherboards and I am satisfied with them - keeping in mind they are cheap. This one is a 50e one , the H81M-DG4 (http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H81M-DG4/) - it can o/c the G3258 as long as you are on BIOS 1.0 (before intel killed the non-Z o/c option). Haven't had any issues with it for ~1 year now.

@cools

keep in mind that BIOS v1.0 has issues with windows10 and G3258 - it's those issues that made intel create a new updated BIOS and at the same time decided that only Z-series mobos can o/c so they killed the non-Z workaround manufacturers used. So the board is fine with win7 (and 8 AFAIK) but is a no-go for win10 if you also want to o/c

I just build a new PC running win 7 x64 ultimate that I wanted t replace my XP machine that I had hooked up to my Quad sync Billabs CRT. I just picked up a used 7950HD installed 2.0 beta 8 driver and noticed that Hyperspin mp4 videos dont play and are solid green. I saw a thread about it a few years back and the fix was to disable hardware acceleration in firefox browser but that didnt work. I dont have the computer hooked up to CRT yet, its only hooked to a lcd monitor as I am still installing and configuring my emulators. If I uninstalled the driver and leave the default windows driver it does play the mp4 vids. I also tried installing VLC and a codec package.

Anyone else have this issue? Is the 7950 ati card compatible or did I get the wrong card?

New beta 9 (http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=1009#p1009)

[08/02/2016][CRT Emudriver 2.0][CRT Tools 2.0][beta 9]

  - [Emudriver]  New driver packages based on Crimson 16.2.1. Lots of new AMD GPUs & APUs supported.

  - [VMMaker]
  - [Arcade OSD] Changes to correctly apply polarities and refresh with Crimson drivers.

  - [VMMaker]    New commands available from the application's console, to allow manual management of the mode list, etc. Type "help" for details.

Notes

- The new drivers (Crimson 16.2.1) can only be used with GroovyMAME versions based on Switchres 0.017a and up.

- For cards supported by several versions, the most recent one is recommended.

(As a bonus, MP4 playback seems to be fixed now with the Crimson based drivers. I don't dare to claim this aloud because this feature has proved to be cursed in the past.

So everything has installed ok, but in windows the card reports as R5 200 series, but in VMM it says HD6450
Is that normal?

Also, in the guide it says:
The final step is to edit mame.ini and with the options -resolution 2560x0 -cleanstretch 2

using -cleanstretch gives an error about 'unknown option'.. is it no longer used/needed?

And can we still use mutlithreading? That option is no longer in mame.ini either..

You don't need any of those options anymore, just leave all defaults.

It's odd that VMMaker reports that. It just shows what it gets from the OS. I wouldn't worry as long as it works.

I meant -cleanstretch and -multithreading. But -resolution 2560x0 is also redundant if you have a table just made of super resolutions. I now prefer to just create super resolutions for progressive modes, then leave a couple of normal 4:3 interlaced modes for vertical games when required, as older cards struggle with scaling to 2560x"high vertical resolution". In that case, you must not force 2560x0 in mame.ini, so the normal interlaced modes have a chance to be used.

What settings do i use for a vertical screen?
I have everything set up in windows etc, and use iRotate to rotate the screen
But things go bad when i set 'vertical' screen in VMM

Also, in VMM when using the arcade15 preset i get this normal display:
http://puu.sh/u8pm3/ec00428250.jpg (http://puu.sh/u8pm3/ec00428250.jpg)

But when i use the MS929 (25kHz removed) preset i get this squashed display:
http://puu.sh/u8pj7/b36a716905.jpg (http://puu.sh/u8pj7/b36a716905.jpg)

Is arcade15 good enough?
Should i worry about trying to use MS929?

You can probably stick to arcade_15 if you're anyway removing upper ranges. You should be getting a normal desktop with ms929 anyway. All what matters is the resolution that ends up being applied to the desktop.

There's always a way. Arcade OSD will tell you.

iRotate is not needed anymore, you can set portrait mode directly from Windows screen options. Please understand that saying "things go bad" is a bit too unspecific.

(if you're going to rotate your desktop, make sure the correct check is applied in VMMaker dialog)

Yes, super resolutions work for the vertical case. But you need to specify your monitor as "rotating to the right" or "rotating to the left". Also, don't forget to mark: "Desktop rotates too".

So what's 'vertical fixed' for then?

Well, that one assumes you're also going to play horizontal games on a vertical monitor, and so it processes the horizontal resolutions into vertical ones with the correct aspect ratio (the icons in VMMaker attempt to illustrate this). No one that I know actually runs horizontal games in that way (i.e. if you have a vertically mounted monitor it's because your arcade is dedicated to vertical games).

Can't log in to Eiusemmodi at the moment but have some feedback on CRT_Emudriver 2.0 b9 (Cat 12.6). I had a hugely frustrating part where one monitor was extended and the other not, and I see now why this is the case from the instructions http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=1016#p1016 (http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=1016#p1016)

I plugged my starter monitor in on the VGA port of my card, not on the DVI. Do that and you end up in an awkward position immediately after the driver is installed, especially if you enable super resolutions from the start.

I was able to get around it with some judacious use of Safe Mode but it was a big pain. Might be worth adding a note in somewhere early/close to the download link saying the installation process is entirely different from CRT_Emudriver 1 and you MUST read the instructions thoroughly/follow them exactly.

Other than that all has worked perfectly, configuration extremely easy. Extremely impressed.

Hi cools,

Thanks for your comments and sorry for the time lost, I guess I'll need to clarify things in the download thread.

For W7+ anyway I like to recommend an HD5000+ card because things get significantly easier thanks to EDID emulation.

Hi Cools,

I have several 5450 and I am happy with them, nevertheless the number does not mean a lot with respect to the GPU generation and feature. (see on wikipedia https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon#Radeon_HD5000_.282009-2010.29). I have also 6450, 7450 and 8990 cards that borrow the same design and GPU.

It was mentioned that the picture is looking blurry with models starting from 5xxx. Do people know exactly which GPU are affected?

It was mentioned that the picture is looking blurry with models starting from 5xxx. Do people know exactly which GPU are affected?

Please guys, if you feel some sympathy for the project, I beg you not to keep spreading this misinformation.

The picture with 5000+ gpus is perfect. The so called blurriness is a bilinear filter that's applied by default to interlaced modes to reduce flicker. It doesn't affect progressive modes. Ironically I've been adding bilinear filtering to interlaced modes in GM since the first day. Now it's done by default by the gpu.

By comparison, pre-HD5000 cards are a real pain to deal with in W7: they require GM to run in admin mode, interlaced modes run at halved refresh, they can't cope with super resolutions really well, lots of monitor detection issues that suck.. A lot of crap that's infinitely worse than an innocent filter on interlaced modes.

Now looking behind, i believe that if I had focused since the beginnig  on adding support to HD 5000+ cards instead of legacy ones on W7, the transition to W7 would have been easier.

By the way, prefer the 6450 to the 5450. Although it has a single analog output, it handles super resolutions better.

Well in my experience the HD 5450 that I've tried (Asus 1 GB) has a problem with "high" vertical super resolutions (e.g. 2560x480): it will show a black frame from time to time making the picture flash. On the other hand my HD 6450 (Asus too) is 100% solid on this regard.

The issue is easily avoidable anyway, by simply not using "high" vertical super resolutions. Indeed, my current setups just use a few progressive super resolutions, and additionally some standard 4:3 interlaced modes, e.g.:

2560x240
2560x248
2560x256
  640x480
  664x496
  688x512

"High" vertical super resolutions are overkill anyway unless you have a serious GPU. The idea here is that the GPU should be able to process all scaling required within the vblank period, so you don't get tearing when using "manual" vsync (frame delay).

Understood, it's a capability thing. FWIW my Asus and XFX 4350s have no problem doing 2560x480 or even 2560x512 for hours.

Has anyone ever experienced ArcadeOSD crashing when it goes to switch resolutions?  Groovymame will switch resolutions fine, but when I go into ArcadeOSD to adjust the sizes it crashes everytime.  I'm using Windows 7 with a HD6670 and the latest versions of the drivers/VMM Maker/ArcadeOSD.

It goes to switch resolutions and pops up "ArcadeOSD has encountered an error and needs to close".  Any ideas?  Most of the resolutions don't need adjusted except for a few vertical shooters and the midway games (mk and NBA jam that i'm worried about).

Thanks!!

Hi all. First I want to thank you for the great job around Emudrivers and Groovymame !

Then I upgraded my config from windows xp 32bits to windows 7 and installed new CRT Emudriver 2.0 beta 10 and It works pretty well but I still have problems :
- I have the halved refresh problems on both my radeon hd 4650 et hd 4850 with interlaced resolutions. I thought it was corrected in last version of crt tools but it doesn't work for me.
- It is very long when switching resolution (around 10 seconds....)

I don't know if I can do something for these problems or if I have to go back to xp until I have a newer radeon card.

My config is an athlon ii x2 250 @3.6, 4gb ram, radeon hd 4850 1gb connected to 2 Sony Trinitron (one horizontal and one vertical)/

Thank you for your help !

How are you connecting your Trinitrons? If you're using an UMSA, then setting the polarities to positive on VMMaker/GM will fix the halved refresh problem. However, if you have a direct connection, that will cause an out of sync display.

Slow mode switching is due to having lots of modes in your mode list and more than one display. Using super resolutions will alleviate the issue, but won't fully fix it.

For Windows 7+, HD-5000+ cards are definitely recommended.

Thanks for the reply.
I connected my two trinitron with direct cables so I can't use positive vsync. I'm thinking about changing for newer radeon card but it seems than it is impossible to use only one card for two screens since there is no more than one analogic output with amd video cards (since 5000 ones ?). So next question is : for dual screens is it possible to use two video cards ? any recommandations (I'm looking at hd 6500) ?
For slow switch resolutions, vmmaker generated 120 modelines. Perhaps it is too much. I can't use only super resolutions because I use other emulators like Kega fusion and Magic Engine. It makes me think that I don't have the problem under windows xp 64bits.

Your cards are certainly more suited for XP 64. Why did you upgrade? Are you missing any specific emulator?

Anyway, HD 5000 cards (not 6000+) still have 2 analog outputs, usually. Starting with HD 6000 series, only one analog output exists. You can still plug two video cards if your motherboard allows it. If that's your plan, ideally use two cards of the same model.

With regards to Genesis and PC Engine, consider trying MAME for those too.

Ok I understand that I need to change my video cards if I want to go with Windows 7.
Why I want to upgrade ? Well initially my config runs under XP 32bits and I had big slow down under games like Espgaluda2 or Shienryu. I saw on forums that 64bits OS can improove cpu perfs so I decided to give them a try.
First I installed Windows 7 and I saw a huge difference with Espgaluda 2 for example
Then I tried xp 64bits, really faster than 32bits version but it seems that it is a bit slower than 7 because I still notice annoying slow downs (not really sure, what do you think about that ?)

And I still need Magic Engine and Kega fusion to run Sega et Nec CD games

Well for the moment I think I will keep my xp 64bits install et go to seven when I upgraded my hardware too.

ATOM-15 v1.3 released:

- v1.3 - March 2017
    - Implemented GOP reallocation for EFI bios.

This version should manage to patch most bios images where previosly it would fail with the "Hook not possible..." error.

Alternatively, is it possible to host the files somewhere temporarily?
I unfortunately can't use emudriver 1.4 as I have a 7000 series card. (the only version I can find an active link to)

AMD adds the "nieg" suffix to the non-GCN version of the driver, I did the same so I don't mix them up.

I have tried for 3 days to use GM with crt-emu drivers to work on a PAL 50Hz TV. I have a Radeon 9200 Pro and I have followed and read many ways to install. I finally got something yesterday but this is all I got.

I just want to know is it possible to display groovymame with crt drivers on a 50hz PAL TV?

I have created modelines in VMM and none of them output 50hz. But the question is will my PAL 50hz TV work??

I have read and watched please I just need to know before I throw my TV out of the window or PC  ;D

I tried with ms live browser also, same problem. So is there a working mirror somwhere for the emu crt driver 2.0 beta files ?

Not sure when, exactly, but the Site will be down for a few hours, maybe days, this week. There's a possibility we can't get this Forum working immediately (and with it, all the information here will be temporarily lost -- be aware it could be even for weeks), depending on how Pun-BB responds. So, in that case, we'll make the announcements on the frontpage, so please, remember this URL:

OK so I must be completely ignorant, but I read through the CRT_Emudriver docs and look over the forums, and I can't seem to find anything regarding the composite sync options available on some Radeon cards. Is this usable at all? Right now I use a SCART to Component adapter which takes care of the sync for me but I want to install GroovyMame on an RGB monitor and I don't know what to do about the composite sync it needs.

Does my HD6450 (or my 5450) have composite sync that CRT_Emudriver can use?

EDIT - I just found some posts about this topic, gonna read through it all and hopefully it'll help me out.

OK so I must be completely ignorant, but I read through the CRT_Emudriver docs and look over the forums, and I can't seem to find anything regarding the composite sync options available on some Radeon cards.

I experimented with the a year or so ago. I did get it working in the end but found the process very frustrating (there's just not much documentation about because most people default to a UMSA or other sync combiner).

This page was helpful: http://www.idiots.org.uk/vga_rgb_scart/ (http://www.idiots.org.uk/vga_rgb_scart/)

Also, for me, the trick for me was to use WinModelines to enable composite sync: http://www.geocities.ws/podernixie/htpc/modeline-en.html (http://www.geocities.ws/podernixie/htpc/modeline-en.html)

Then, from memory, I think you need to fiddle with the sync polarity in VMMaker.

Would be great if the whole GroovyMAME package had some kind of global switch for composite sync. Saves on additional circuitry. Makes RGB modding a TV much simpler (tap the Jungle IC OSD RGB lines and simply feed composite sync directly into the yellow RCA).

Even better would be composite sync using the Atom BIOS (that's the main reason I abandoned the composite sync idea: I wanted the boot sequence to display in 15 kHz).

Good luck! :)

FYI I think the mame_favourites.ini may have a limit of 512 lines in 2.0 vmmaker. When adding beyond this the vmmaker program crashes.  I don't recall this limit on the vmmaker 1.4. I filter Catver.ini against regular expressions to come up with a list of roms, so my .ini file has 6572 entires.   I can just prefilter the mame.xml but wanted to mention the issue with vmmaker.

Should I update with the "Catalyst 12.6" based driver or the "Crimson 16.2.1 non-GCN* cards" one? What is the recommendation here?
Also I assume I can just update the driver over the old one, right?

TIA for any info/help!

Hi everyone!  Here is one completely satisfied user of crt_emudriver

I'm driving an old HD 5670 through DVI -> VGA -> UMSA - Ultimate SCART Adapter -> Sony Trinitron 29" CRT
And it works like a charm in 768x480@60i    Even though it looks "frankensteini" in the back :P    Unfortunately here it's difficult to find anything other than Sony CRT TVs.  They work fine, (minus the geometry at the edges but what can you do). It's not like it's  cheap or possible to order something better through mail :P

Anyway.  I have one "question".  I know there can't be a definitive answer but...
The new  AMD AM4 boards have the VGA out on some.  What do you think will there be a possibility when Raven Ridge APU comes out in a few months (4 Ryzen cores and Vega integrated graphics) to push these resolutions out?      I'm playing games in 768x480@60i so that is more than 5 times less resolution than 1080P so it will have enough GPU power to run anything and the Ryzen cores are powerful enough.   That would be my personal dream come true looking at the form factor which will be really small (no need for an external GPU.

PS: I've been playing Cuphead yesterday on the arcade. It's an awesome (though frustrating from time to time) experience hehehehe

I guess that will work as long as we have updated drivers for the new hardware.

Somehow related to this, I've been thinking of opening a thread about building a low cost APU based pc, based on already existing (not Ryzen) APU processors, so the hardware expert crew can provide some advice on this. I've done some (limited) research and it seems possible to flash the integrated AMD GPU just like we do with discrete video cards.

Hopefully in the next few months I have more time to focus on this. Currently I hardly have time to visit this forum.

since noone replied I decided to make a system backup and try to update to the latest "Crimson 16.2.1 non-GCN" driver: all I got was a blue screen initially and then some weird half-install that VMMAKER can't recognise... also tried to restore the original MS driver, it worked but the latest CRTEmuDriver drivers (both flavors) still did not install correctly.
Is there a way to update or not at all? It seems to me monitor info is damaged or something, resolutions are greyed out in all crtemudrivers and they are not getting detected.  :banghead:

Is there a way to add this back in?

Thank you

CRT Tools - Fall whiners update

NEW!: Windows Interlace Patcher 1.0 (http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?id=344). New tool that attempts to fix, once and for all, the infamous halved refresh issue affecting legacy (pre HD-5000) AMD cards.

[24/11/2017][CRT Emudriver 2.0][CRT Tools 2.0][beta 11] (http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?id=295)

  - [Emudriver]  Disabled deflicker filter for interlaced modes. Now your interlaced modes will look perfectly sharp, with all their genuine flicker intact.

  - [VMMaker]    Fixed bug that caused CRT Emudriver not being detected under Windows XP.

  - [VMMaker]    Added new preset for 15/31 kHz dual-sync monitor.

[24/11/2017]ATOM-15 v1.4 (http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?id=64)

  - Fixed bug that caused wrong checksum correction in some cases.

Unfortunately it's not an option. Once the driver is patched, there's no deflicker filter anymore. You can keep using the previous driver just fine, since this is the only difference between them, and still download and use the updated CRT Tools.

Several users have been bugging me persistently about the "blurriness issue" since CRT Emudriver 2.0 was launched, while the pro-filter campaign was almost nonexistent. A project like this can't afford having a big part of its user base tied to absurd hardware for a nonsense issue.

Regarding HD 4xxx cards, now their most annoying issue has also been fixed: halved refresh on interlace. This one was way more difficult to solve than the deflicker filter. I spent a lot of time looking in the wrong place. It turns out it's a Windows feature (now available in Linux also!).

Amazing work, really. So pleased that you persisted! :)

So, for your next trick, what are the chances of a composite sync option for Atom-15?

If we had that, we could do away with all our sync combiners (UMSA, Extron, J-PAC, homemade cables, etc.)

Currently, we can get composite sync direct out of an ATI card once Windows has launched but not during boot.

Thanks Calamity for the new driver - the interlace filter removal did make a huge difference in clarity - I like the flicker more than the alternative :D

I did get the usual BSODs when unistalling the previous CRT Emudriver - in my case I needed to boot to safe mode 640x480 then let windows install their stock HD6000 driver which resulted in a 31khz mode AFAIK with my ATOM-15 modded 6670 (a mode which was unusable with a vga lcd monitor for some reason) -> so I needed to re-enable EDID emulation with VMMAKER (even though no crtemudriver was installed anymore - or maybe parts of it anyways) and then the update would work. Weird but it worked for me 2 times now...

UGH.  Maybe I'll go that route.  I just don't relish the idea of having to set EVERYTHING up all over again.  This time, I'll be smart about only putting the OS on one hard drive and everything MAME/Hyperspin/arcade related on the second hard drive.

It's the video thing the first issue you should solve right after OS installation. Everything else, frontends, etc. is secondary stuff. With regards to 32bits, it makes little sense to build a MAME machine based on a 32 bits OS, the performance way better on 64 bits.

I agree.  Didn't even realize this PC (which was sitting with just a clean Windows install in a closet for months) was 32 bit.  Started fiddling with all of this MAME stuff and got everything all set up before realizing the shortcomings/limitations.  Will be easy enough to do it all over again.  Just time.  Will hopefully give CRT Emudriver another shot by the end of the weekend.  Thanks for your help thus far.  I'm sure I'll be leaning on you again soon.

Some notes about the new composite sync feature

- Just like any other feature, composite sync support can be enabled independently for boot time (BIOS mod with ATOM-15) and for Windows (with VMMaker).

- In order to enable composite sync right from boot, you have to check the corresponding option in ATOM-15 and flash your video card with the modified BIOS. Composite sync will be applied to all available outputs, so that's something you may need to consider depending on your setup.

- Regarding Windows, first of all, an important warning: enabling composite sync may be a tricky business. Even if you know what you're doing chances are you get into a messed video state at some point of the process. Once you get everything right it should work fine forever, you just need to get there. I recommend to always work with two monitors during the process and only enable composite sync to the secondary monitor (the one you're not working with) so in case anything goes wrong you don't get an unusable display. If anything went wrong and you can't find your way around a messed display, you can boot in same mode and uninstall the driver.

- There's a new button in VMMaker's video card tab that allows you to toggle composite sync for the currently selected output.

- Again, HD 5000+ cards are easier to setup for composite sync than legacy ones. Just enable composite sync for the selected output, create the modes and you're done.

- Legacy (pre HD 5000 cards) need some extra steps in order to get correct composite sync:
- If you're using an VGA to BNC cable, remind that composite sync is ouput through the h-sync cable, so if you're using a T connector, unplug the v-sync cable.

Hellz yeah!!! That was fast! :)

Not having to build/buy sync combining gadgets in 2018 is going to ble such a relief. It's one of the most annoying parts of the PC to CRT interfacing process, especially when you know the video card is capable of taking care of it all.

You've excelled yourself! Definitely buying you a beer (via PayPal).

Great work Calamity, thanks for everything. I don't have a PVM anymore, i use an Scart TV with Arcadeforge  UMSA - Ultimate SCART Adapter. Now i want to use the new composite sync feature and put aside the UMSA. So which cable will i need? A regular VGA to scart with only the H-sync connected to pin 20? With the UMSA i got a rolling picture on a HD 6450 with the Composite sync enabled.

Edit: So i just modified an old scart to vga cable from a projector and works fine on my Philips CM8833, but on the scart tv don't, i think i need 5v on it

Yes, the rgb enable voltage pin is essential for tv sets, a 1084 doesn't use it or the aspect ratio one since they are dedicated monitors.

Thanks Calamity! I am just getting into this subject and have successfully built a CRT TV setup all thanks to your drivers!  :applaud:

I recently had the chance to upgrade from a Radeon R5 230 to a R7 240, and moved from beta 10 (non-GCN) to the recently released beta 12 (now on a GCN card). Unfortunately, my TV isn't doing too good without the flicker filter on interlaced resolutions...

You mentioned "you can keep using the old drivers with the updated tools", and that's what I'd like to try next, but I can't find the beta 10 files anymore  :-\ ... (I did keep the beta 10 non-GCN installer I used for my previous card, but the new one is GCN)

Is there an official archive of previous versions? If there isn't, if someone has the beta 10 installer for GCN cards, please share it with me!

Those cards have specific drivers provided by the laptop manufacturer (Dell, HP, etc.). I'd say the mainstream AMD driver should work, provided the pci identifier is included in the driver's .inf (not trivial task of editing it, .inf files need to be digitally signed). You may try your luck with version based on 16.2.1 for GCN cards. Run the setup program, and if the card is recognized with whatever name chances are it will work. Of course I'm assuming it's Windows 7 or newer.

ok so I downloaded 16.2.1 for gnc cards as recommended. The setup found my firepro card and displayed name correctly as AMD FirePro M5100 FireGL V. Installation was a successful. After installation the uninstall screen now shows it as a AMD Radeon R9 M200X Seriers (CRT Emudriver). When I open vmmaker it shows DISPLAY1 - Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 - Generic PnP Monitor as enabled and says no compatible driver found. Does this require me do edit the .inf file as mentioned above. If so which file do I edit and what do I add to it

Thanks again for the help

Don't know if it will help, but can you disable the Intel GPU and try again?
There might also be a way to get VMM to 'target' the correct GPU also, but i'm unsure of how... but personally i'd disable the intel

Thank you for advice I disabled the intel GPU and now its showing the correct GPU enabled. Now when i try to install new modes for 15khz I get Reject by driver error and when I open arcade_osd it does not show the 15khz options I need. Any ideas on how to fix

Sorry if this has been answered before. Tried to search but couldn't find anything.

I recently rebuilt my arcade PC. I use the EMU-driver with windows 10 and an AMD 6xxx.

It works fine but after a couple of days I got a BSOD on startup.  I got it working again by:
Starting in safe mode
Reinstalling the driver
Restart
Add modes with VMMaker again.

Today it happened again but this time I can't get it to work. I get "rejected by driver" when I try to add modes whatever I do.

My guess is that windows replaces the driver somehow. VMMaker says "emudriver" (how does it detect that? registry) but device manager says all driver files are signed by windows.

Is there a definite way to prevent windows/windows update etc from messing with the display driver?

It works fine but after a couple of days I got a BSOD on startup.

A BSOD on startup may happen for several reasons:

- A genuine bug in the driver (probably caused by the patch). Unlikely, otherwise it would have crashed before.
- Test mode turned off with patched drivers. This is typical of Windows 10, so I think this is probably the issue.

So, do you think it's possible that test mode might have been turned off by you accidentaly or by the OS itself? Has the OS applied any updates in between?

Regardless, when Windows 10 registers a BSOD on a device driver, it automatically disables it and installs a previous driver that is known to work if it finds one in its driver store. I don't know if this behaviour can be disabled, but what I'd try is to uninstall all drivers associated with the gpu, one by one, from the device manager, until the Windows does not recognize the card at all. Then install CRT Emudriver.

Hi Calamity,

I've been watching some of these updates, and the ability to add composite sync in VMM is awesome!

However, i'm worried about the inability to turn the flicker filter back on. If this is something that can be added as an option to VMM as well, would you consider doing so? I prefer the filter to be on, it works really well with older 3D driving games like model 2. And the filter is awesome for frontends, because video shrunk below 240p looks awful :)

Thanks for reading :)

If the flicker filter is something that can't be turned on/off, then I don't think it's a big deal to offer two versions of the drivers.

Hi,
I hope it is the good place to post my pb.
I tried to run spectrum games with groovymame 0.193 and it seems that it cannot switch to a proper resolution. I have the message : 'Unable to to create the Direct3D device (8876086C)' message that is printed again and again in the console.
I tried to add asked modeline (352x296@50.080128) with VMMAKER but I can't. The modeline is never created...
I have the same pb with Thomson MO5 emulation with the modeline 864x294.
All my other systems work well including Amstrad CPC.
I don't know what to do now, is anybody have an idea please ?!

At a guess, your progressivelinesmax variable is not high enough. Take a look at the monitor presets sticky - http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,116023.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,116023.0.html) - then open your mame.ini and find the crt_range0 line which will look something like the below. This line defines the range limits, so if the highlighted number in your line is under 296, the modeline you are trying to create falls outside the range you've told VMM to work with.

      crt_range0  15625-16200, 49.50-65.00, 2.000, 4.700, 8.000, 0.064, 0.192, 1.024, 0, 0, 192, 288, 448, 576

And yes, wrong place to post this. A new thread in the main list would have been fine :)

Hi, sorry for a silly stupid question...

I've reverted back to XP because the lightguns capability (Gcon2). But I don't know how I can enable magic resolutions.

I've teste with oder crt tools (change the ini table) and all I get are out of sync resolutions.

I can get super res from W7 just following the thread (with user-super.ini in vmmaker 2.0) but... is there any "user-magic.ini" for XP users?

And another question about resolutions with lightgun games:

Even I have the mouse working perfect in Windows desktop the mouse/lightgun signal is about 2x (horizontal) when SwitchRes change the screen resolution. So when I move the gun from let to the right, the cross pointer is on the right but the gun is still pointing to the center.

I have set sensibilty to 1 in both X and Y axis...

Can I make SwitchRe keep the desktop resolution for lightgun games?

Thanks in advance.

I have a standard-res 15KHz arcade monitor (Hantarex Polo) in my arcade cabinet.
My video card is a Radeon HD 7750 (GCN)

I just installed the latest version of CRT Emudriver...

CRT Emudriver & CRT Tools 2.0 beta 13

...and I noticed that in Windows at 640x480 interlaced text is FAR more legible.

I used to have an older version of CRT Emudriver...

CRT Emudriver & CRT Tools 2.0 beta 8

If the change in text legibility with the latest drivers is due to the flicker filter being disabled, then put me in the anti flicker filter camp.  Wow.  The difference is shocking.

Also, reading the release notes raises some questions...   What is composite sync and should I investigate further?  Is this something that will improve my setup?

I was all time against interlace filtering. Many games like in mcr3, mcr68 drivers looks bad with filter enabled. Also text in frontends, windows as blurry but that personally never worries me, after all You don't read too much on CRT.

The only pros were 3D games from Taito Type X hardware. Filter actually removed some sharp edges and caused vertical scrolling to be more smooth.

I think composite setup is only for those people that don't have UMSA or any other hardware that produces composite signal for CRT monitor/TV. With such option You have to wire VGA/DSub to SCART and that's it. Look at 5.2 - https://digilander.libero.it/venturi1975/index.html

Any hints?

That could be MAME's exponential system list growth overflowing poor old VMMaker. I'll have a look at it. Anyway, you don't need to list from xml, nobody does that these days, just use super resolutions.

Hello, I've just bought a AMD Radeon R9 Fury card that is suposed to be compatible with CRT_emudriver... but it has no analog output... only one HDMI, one DVI-D and several Display Ports.

Can I use a "Display Port to VGA" or "Display Port to DVI-I" adaptor to work with CRT_emudriver???
Or it has to be a native analog output???

Thanks.

A DP->VGA active adapter should work. But nobody has tested it yet with CRT Emudriver as far as I know. Make sure it's a simple digital to analog conversion (no scaling).

I've installed the last version of CRT Emudriver (http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/misc.php?action=redirect&pid=1009&to=https://drive.google.com/open?id=1HYtmxr_Bla3RtVww4lXDVbe7plvHKO2S (http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/misc.php?action=redirect&pid=1009&to=https://drive.google.com/open?id=1HYtmxr_Bla3RtVww4lXDVbe7plvHKO2S)).

When I try to enable EDID emulation on VMMaker, my TFT 31khz standard PC monitor doesn't go out of sync...

The card has three DP outputs. I've tried all of them.
I also disabled mainboard onboard GPU.

I allways get the same result:

After rebooting my PC, first time I open WMMaker it looks like this (6 Displays detected)

(http://i704.photobucket.com/albums/ww50/limonetti/th_Sin%20ttulo.jpg) (http://s704.photobucket.com/user/limonetti/media/Sin%20ttulo.jpg.html)

(http://i704.photobucket.com/albums/ww50/limonetti/th_Sin%20ttulo4.png) (http://s704.photobucket.com/user/limonetti/media/Sin%20ttulo4.png.html)

Two analog outputs are detected

(http://i704.photobucket.com/albums/ww50/limonetti/th_Sin%20ttulo2.png) (http://s704.photobucket.com/user/limonetti/media/Sin%20ttulo2.png.html)

When I enable EDID emulation the screen goes black and after 1 or 2 seconds it returns to desktop and shows this dialog

(http://i704.photobucket.com/albums/ww50/limonetti/th_Sin%20tiacutetulo5.png) (http://s704.photobucket.com/user/limonetti/media/Sin%20tiacutetulo5.png.html)

After that it returns to the WMMaker interface but this time the Displays looks like this

(http://i704.photobucket.com/albums/ww50/limonetti/th_Sin%20ttulo4.png) (http://s704.photobucket.com/user/limonetti/media/Sin%20ttulo4.png.html)

As you can see Displays numbers has increased. At this time if I disable EDID emulation display's numbers goes even higher

(http://i704.photobucket.com/albums/ww50/limonetti/th_Sin%20ttulo4.png) (http://s704.photobucket.com/user/limonetti/media/Sin%20ttulo4.png.html)

And It contunues to happen until I reboot my PC. I open WMMaker and display's numbers are set again like in the begining...

I've tried all combinations of analog outputs (0 and 1) swaping through the three DP's but can't get a 15Khz signal output...

Any suggestion??

Hi again, I bought the adaptor and have been trying to make it work without success.

Since lemmon posted this, we've been testing different HDMI to VGA adapters, with success. Lemmon, thanks for helping me with the testing process. I'll post an article in Eiusdemmodi with our results.

[19/10/2018][CRT Emudriver 2.0][CRT Tools 2.0][beta 14] (http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=1009#p1009)

  - [Emudriver]  Removed low pixel clock limitation on HDMI outputs. This allows outputting 15 kHz through HDMI in combination with HDMI->VGA active adapters.

  - [VMMaker]    Added support for EDID emulation on digital outputs (HDMI and DVI-D). EDID emulation drop-down menu now shows outputs by type. DisplayPort still not supported.

  - [VMMaker]    Support for pixelclocks up to 6 GHz. Modeline generation now possible from 15 kHz up to 8K fulldome. Bandwidth limitations imposed by drivers still apply.

  - [VMMaker]    Fix XML processing of newer versions of MAME.

  - [VMMaker]    Fix composite sync for HD 5000+ cards.

Long time since, but I bought one of these VGA to 4x BNC cables (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SVGA-VGA-to-4-BNC-Cable-HD15-Male-to-4-x-BNC-Male-Video-Monitor-Lead-2M/111402258315?hash=item19f0178f8b:g:4S8AAOSwh6xTuorQ) and have it connecting a 5450 directly via the VGA port (EDID emulation on, Composite sync on) to a Sony PVM

First of all would just like to thank calamity for the excellent CRT Emudriver 2.0. Got my Astro City with Nanao MS9-29 running on windows 7 with a Radeon HD 7790. It's all working great resolution switching etc.

I was hoping someone could help me figure out a problem I may have found with regards to colour accuracy. So since we all strive to achieve the closest we can to get these old games to look correct in terms of resolution and refresh rate, aspect ratio etc. I wanted to get the picture as good as i can. I have access to a x-rite eye 1 pro calibration device. I started to calibrate my monitor to get the best colour accuracy i could but came across a problem.

If you connect a pc to an arcade monitor via DVI-I to VGA the driver uses Full Range RGB values (0-255) automatically. The problem here is that on my setup blacks are crushed at the bottom end and whites are also destroyed at the top end. Confirmed using test patterns. I'm thinking i would need to change the pixel format via CCC to ycbcr or rgb limited 16-235. This would convert the full range signal in windows and send out the correct range for my monitor. (im assuming arcade monitors/crt tvs expect limited 16-235 range?)

So far i have tried installing various versions of CCC (i know it's not advised but wanted to try) but the pixel format option does not exist. I have also dug into the registry but could find no option to force it. I think the only way would be to overide the EDID or use a hdmi to vga adapter but i don't have access to one of these yet.

Sorry for the long winded post, i can't imagine the work gone into this project and don't want to sound like i'm complaining because i am not. I just strive for the perfect setup and was hoping someone could shed some light on any work arounds.

Thank you so much :-)

In this link (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B5iMjDor3P__OGVGNmR1dzhiZms) there's a file named cnext64.7z, that's the standalone installer for the Radeon Settings app, corresponding to the Emudriver based on 16.2.

I doubt such setting exists, however.

MAME now supports LUT's for monitor calibration, check this (https://www.reddit.com/r/MAME/comments/9tp2l1/using_3d_luts_with_mame/). Unfortunately it's done through HLSL, which is undesired on CRTs. I don't know if you can disable HLSL feature but the LUT.

I downloaded and installed the cnext you linked but unfortunately the option is not there for pixel format. I read that it's not available when the connection detects a dvi output and just forces full RGB.

I appreciate the idea of the LUT but i was hoping to do a system wide calibration at monitor level using the pot adjustments so all my emulators look correct.

Do you think that if i ordered a hdmi to vga adaptor it would allow the options to appear?

I really appreciate the help and suggestion.

Hi all,

First of all, thx Calamity for this nice work.

I tested new beta 15 on HD6450 and i can not set 640x240; after install modes with vmmaker, windows not recognized this resolution.

I reverted to beta 14 and works fine again with the same file .ini

Salut

I hope this is the correct place to post this: I am unfortunately not able to get crt_emudriver to work on my PVM-1953MD and am hoping to get a little help. I follower the installation guide, I'm using an hd5450, and I get all the way to "Enable EDID emulation" and the picture does not seem to be working properly. Enabling composit sync gets me a stable picture, but that picture is slightly distorted and fades to black quickly. Here is a video I made of the picture fade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cjIvxp3ohs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cjIvxp3ohs)

I'm not sure what's happening. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Sometimes the monitor's EDID may get in the middle, but if you use EDID emulation on the TV this shouldn't happen. Anyway, I'm glad you figured it out.

Hey everyone,

I think its my first post here and really appreciate if someone could help me.

I have a SLI of 2x Nvidia 970, using Corsair Bracket and AIO Water Coolers on both. For me, its a fantastic performance with the overclock done on them.
Also I'm using a i7 4790k + ASUS Z97-PRO MB.

My intention now is to add a third video card from AMD to use the CRT Emudriver and send the analog output to my CRT TV.
I have tried this with Nvidia, it works, but its not great. AMD video cards is recommended to do this job done.

My question is: Is it possible to add this third AMD Video card (something like the R9 270) to play my retrogames and also continue using the SLI 970s at the same time for the newer not affecting performance?

The SLI needs to keep the x8 on PCI-e on both, and third video card possibly runnning at x4 for native resolution (dont wanna super resolution) at the 3rd PCI-e on MB.

My ASUS MB manual is here: https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1150/Z97-PRO/E9062_Z97-PRO.pdf

Page 35 shows the scheme of the Slots on PCI-e.

I'm using Windows 10.
Sorry for my English. Its not my natural language.

Thank you!

Does the CRT Emudriver support any on-board GPUs?

I'm trying to find a mini-itx motherboard with VGA output and a GPU supported by CRT Emudriver.  Basically I'm trying to build the absolute smallest box for GroovyMame/CRT Emudriver...

I haven't done this personally, but it sounds like it could partially work. Calamity will have to confirm, but I believe that GroovyMame requires that the crt_emudriver display be DISPLAY0 in order to change resolutions and timings automatically. This might be a problem in the multi-gpu setup that you are describing.

My MB have some restrictions when using the third video card, like running only at x1 or disabling USB fuctions if it is on x4.
So I end up removing the second video card and put an ATI 5750 on Slot 2.

But now I have another problem: CRT Emudriver is crashing during installation, around 30%.
Mouse jumps to the center of the screen and then the system freezes!

I'm using Windows 10 x64, Asus z97-Pro, Nvidia 970 + ATI 5750.

Already tried it in Safe mode. It installs, but Windows crashes when loading to normal boot.

Can someone pls help me?
I'm stuck at this...

Can the DEP (Data Execution Prevention) be the cause of this freezing?

Hallo,

I´m also interested in buying this barebone with a AMD Ryzen 2400G.
I´ve seen on the asrock Homepage, that for Bios 3.2 and 3.4 there is a Graphic Driver with VGA AIO Version 18.50.16.01 upwards necessary.
The latest CRT-Emudriver is based on 18.5.1, so maybe this is the reason for not funtioning on the VGA Port.
(Maybe calamity can release a newer verion  ;) ?

Honestly, I don't see anyone here using the new GPUs supported by latest Emudriver release, which took me months to get done, so I have other priorities right now.

The VGA not working as expected is due to AMD's design, as explained in the A300 thread.

Hi,

I have no other choice but to install a CRT TV into my cab due to my previous arcade monitor having failed with no chances for recovery. I have picked up here in Europe a JVC 21 inch 50hz (PAL?) TV set from around 2000 which gives a very nice picture.
The specs of my hardware are as is :
Win XP
Arcade VGA based on Radeon 9200 (old model)
Groovymame 1.48 (I did not upgrade as I am fine with this version)
Crt emudriver and Vmmaker 1.2c (what is reffered to as "obsolete drivers" but working with XP)
With my previous arcade monitor everything was working perfect and I could just display both horizontal and vertical games on the horizontal monitor (a minor tweak of the Vsize was done to fit vertical games with a very limited top/bottom black band on horizontal games.)

I did not touch any of the settings done in the VMmaker.ini file and tried on the fly the TV set but the result on vertical games is not good and most of the bottom and top part of the video are missing. I tried to play with the options of the TV service menù but that will not shrink the vertical image (just move the whole raster till the 3 red, green, blue lines pop up.) Also many vertical games have the bottom part completely messed up.
These are the specs used with my previous monitor
monitor_specs0 15625-16200, 49.50-65.00, 2.000, 4.700, 8.000, 0.064, 0.192, 1.024, 0, 0, 256, 448

I tried the PAL preset but got the desktop completely scrambled and was a pain to go back to my previous settings.

What could be the good presets to use for this tv set? Also can I use the CRT Tools 2.0 or are these not compatible with the obsolete drivers?
I have attached a copy of the ini file in case. (please note that two presets are recorded because my previous monitor was a dual 15/24 khz. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Rick

Anyone using Emudriver with a newer rx580?  I am interested in giving the newer cards a shot since older hardware is becoming harder to find for a decent price and allows for using more advanced gpu-based emus.  I have several HDMI adapters already purchased and will report my findings once I get a card.

Hi dapsaille,

If you're using a Ryzen APU in your build, I'm afraid it won't work. I've just received mine and I'm trying to add support to 2200G/2400G APUs, but it looks like it won't be easy.

damn :x

 I's a 2200G, my fault, i didn't read the whole topic  :'(

Anyway, i'm pretty sure you will find a way to make this apu work, and with your work we will be able to have the Ultimate Ultra Massive Mini Itx 15Khz Box ™  :notworthy:

EDIT:  i've just tryed the 2.0 b15 18.5 with win10x64 and i get "Reject by driver" in vmmaker when i want ton install modelines, you probably know already that  ;D

sorry, to ask, I´m following this thread and I don´t want to highjack it. But if you were me and you had the money, what hardware would you get in september 2019?
miniATX ist definately a must go, but if the support for a internal GPU is just not there yet I'd go with an external one.

what is the ultimative mini atx setup right now ? Which board? What´s the most stable and powerfull cpu (I see it´s not a ryzen)?  :)

edit: excuse me, I should have read first. I just ordered a Ryzen 2400G  / A320M-HDV combo for testing ...

guys i have some trouble with ArcadeOSD and need some help , i attached some screenshots, one of them shows the issue (where you see attract mode)

I am trying to move the desktop resolution (640x480p) that has been shifted to the right with it but it does not do anything?
I selected a different desktop res to make sure i was doing it correctly

Arcade OSD does change the horizontal geometry of the other (super) resolutions just fine but, not the 640x480 one for some reason
I am using a Radeon 5450 card with robotron 666 chassis (i selected this in Vmmaker and did the modeline generation line this, i have about 15modelines now in windows)

When i select a game it launches ok most of them launch ok, the super resolutions do center mostly correct
i attached some screens of the ArcadeOSD settings ...i  really dont understand why the super resolutions are able to modify the horizonal geometry placement but these 640x480p does not

Hopefully someone here can help or perhaps had same issue?

You can't do modifications to the mode used currently by the desktop. Just set your desktop to a different mode temporarily and do the changes to 640x480, then switch your desktop back to this mode.

Hi, apologies if this is a dumb question - but I'm about to build a new PC to play Demul in 31Khz (as well as Groovymame in 15khz) on my Blast City cab.
What's the best graphics card I should get that is supported by Emudriver that will power Naomi 2 and Atomiswave games?

Thanks

In case anyone else is interested, I’ve got a follow up to my question above.
I went for an R9 380. I did some investigation and the 380 and 380x were the last Radeon cards to include analogue out through DVI-I.
I’m using it with an i7 4770k CPU overclocked to 4.3ghz and unfortunately, using default settings, it’s not good enough to play Naomi or Atomiswave in Demul.
Standard GroovyMame games are brilliant, but I’m not able to have the 31khz newer games on too.
I’m guessing someone else has cracked this using j-pac and CRTemu?

Which are the "default settings"? Those specs should be more than enough for bare-bones emulation at 480-P, which is what you're after. You don't need CRT Emudriver for that, though.

Hi, I just installed latest CRT Emudriver and Groovymame on my pc (Win7, CPU AMD Athlon, GPU Ati Radeon R5 230) connected to a fantastic monitor Commodore 1084S.

The image quality is superb, but I have a few questions:

- I don't have installed super resolutions. I generated the modelines with the user_mode.ini file from WMMaker... I didn't understand what super resolutions can do  :-[

- verticals games (like 1941) are displayed with an interlaced resolution... is it right ?

- During the PC startup, bios splash screen and Win7 loading screen are out of frequency, is it possible to fix this?

Thanks in advance for reply  :)

Hello,
I recently bought a mini-pc "Barebone AMD Mini-PC 500-AMD fx-8800 / 4gb / Radeon r7". I installed Windows 7 Professional x64 on it. The only drivers that I installed were those of the network card and the sound card.
I went to the calamity forum page and downloaded these at first:

- Download CRT Emudriver & CRT Tools 2.0 beta 15 (Crimson 16.2.1 for GCN* cards) for Windows 7/8/10 64-bits

Desktop: AMD Radeon™ HD 7700-7900, HD 8500-8900 Series
                             AMD Radeon™ R7 200, R7 300, R9 200, R9 300, R9 Nano, R9 Fury Series
                     APU: AMD A-Series APUs with Radeon™ R4, R5, R6, or R7 Graphics
AMD Pro A-Series APUs with Radeon™ R5 or R7 Graphics
AMD Athlon™ Series APUs with Radeon™ R3 Graphics
AMD Sempron™ Series APUs with Radeon™ R3 Graphics
                             AMD A-Series APUs with Radeon™ R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, or R8 Graphics
                             AMD Pro A-Series APUs with Radeon™ R5, R6, or R7 Graphics
                             AMD FX-Series APUs with Radeon™ R7 Graphics
                             AMD E-Series APUs with Radeon™ R2 Graphics
                             AMD Radeon™ HD 8180 - HD 8400 Series Graphics
               Mobility: AMD Radeon™ R9 M300, R7 M300, R9 M200, R7 M200, R5 M200 Series
                             AMD Radeon™ HD 7700M-7900M, HD 8500M-8900M Series

In red I have marked what my video card should be.

After installing the CRT Emudriver 2.0 drivers and restarting the PC several times, start VMMAKER (both as administrator and not). In the "Video card" tab in the output selection, the "Analogic_0" item does not appear, but as you see only the digital HDMI ones. My pc has an HDMI port and a VGA port. I first tried to attach a samsung CRT monitor to the VGA port and nothing. And then I also tried, after restarting the PC, to connect the video card via the HDMI port on an LCD monitor. But in the output selection, Digital_0 and Digital_4 always give me and Analogic_0 never shows me.

(https://i.ibb.co/M7Cg9XZ/r7-1.png) (https://ibb.co/M7Cg9XZ) (https://i.ibb.co/H2SH83p/r7-2.png) (https://ibb.co/H2SH83p)

Then I tried to completely uninstall the CRT driver, through the setup, restart your PC and download the new version:
- Download CRT Emudriver & CRT Tools 2.0 beta 15 (Adrenalin 18.5.1 for GCN* cards) for Windows 7/8 64-bits

As you can see, always on the list, my video card seems to be supported.
I repeated exactly the same steps again and the same thing, the "Analogic_0" entry is not in the list.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks :)

Hi DreyMix,

Your APU probably sees the VGA connector as a digital output, internally, your MB is probably using a DAC for that. I'd try enabling EDID emulation over the Digital_4 output, and see if that sends video through the VGA connector.

I tried to uninstall the new CRT Emudriver & CRT Tools 2.0 beta 15 drivers (Adrenalin 18.5.1 for GCN * cards) and reinstall the 16.2.1 again. After rebooting and checking that the drivers were installed correctly, I started the VMMAKER software again.

I tried to select the "Digital_4" output as you told me, while I already had the VGA cable attached to the samsung CRT monitor. So I closed the VMMAKER program and went to the desktop. With the right mouse button, I chose "Screen resolution", I selected the 2nd screen (640x480) and I said put it as main screen. So the samsung monitor went out of sync. I unplugged the samsung vga monitor cable and attached the Arcade Press VGA to Scart cable to the TV instead. I also attached the USB socket (for 5v) to a free socket on the PC. You see something, but the image is completely moved.

PS: I also tried to change the BIOS settings, putting the "Int Graphics (IGD)" item on "Primary Video Adapter". But nothing has changed, as regards the list of available outputs of EDID.

Hi,

I'm getting a lot of scrolling on my CRT.
See this video:
https://youtu.be/yGGhEvTPThI

Specs:
OS: Windows 10
Graphics: Radeon R9 380X
CRT: Nanao MS9-29SU

I installed calamity drivers, ran VMMaker and I can get 640x480 resolution but can't get a stable image.
I then uninstalled calamity drivers, and ran catalyst uninstaller and rebooted.
I started the process again and ended up in the same situation.

I also tried on a 2nd identical CRT. I have 2 from a SEGA Naomi Universal cabinet (Model Nanao MS-29SU).
I've adjusted the pots on the CRT chassis and can't get a stable image, so figure it must be the PC config.

Im running Windows 10. Is it the case that if I downgraded to Windows 7, it would have a better chance of working?
Or is there something else I need to do?

Thanks.

Does the emudriver & tools executable file include step by step guide on how to properly install it?

I know I need to download the proper version according to my GPU, but is there any guide on how to install it or is it all included in the executable file itself?

I just bought myself a GPU and would like to prepare myself for the installation while I wait :)

Of note: For the time being I am only interested in crt_emudriver, no emulator nor Atom15. Only crt_emudriver.

Hi Calamity,
I'm trying to install a HD4850 in the cabinet, and i've got the drivers installed..created and installed modes...in Windows 10
But i'm trying to follow this guide: https://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=1016#p1016
But it's talking about having 2 screens to swap between.. and unplug at various stages etc
My issue is I only have 1 port that i can access (DVI=>VGA dongle)
So how do i set this up with only 1 port and not being able to have the 2 screens plugged in at the same time?
Do i not 'extend desktop' and do things differently?

Hi guys,

Could anyone enlight me, is the Ryzen 5 2400G the most recent CPU that CRT Emudriver supports, or could I go any better? I'm intending to build this one in my cabinet for retro and modern emulation (wii, ps3, etc).

Between this one or a 4790k, which one would be your recommendation? 4790k seems to perform better for certain emulators but it supports DDR3 only, while the Ryzen 5 2400G supports DDR4 and I guess for more modern emulators that would be better (like RPCS3)?

Thanks a lot in advance :)

I am starting again with groovymame and emucrt with current win 10 professional

My Hardware:
Asrock Z97 Anniversary Rev 1.01 (Pro3?)    Bios P2.1 2018/3/13
CPU DUAL CORE Intel Pentium G3258 @3,2GHz Socket 1150  (Overclocked to 4GHz)
RAM DDR3-1600 Kingston RAM 2x4GB
GPU ATI Radeon HD 7950

I had experiance years ago with win xp but seems a lot has changed ...

Where I can find tutorials, Hints for current Version?
-crt_emudriver_&_tools_2.0_beta_15_12.6_W.7.8.10-64
-groovymame_0232.002b_win-7-8-10

I found this video here and tried it. It works for my first start :-)

GroovyMame Setup on Windows10.with CRT Emudriver 2.0/VmMaker!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7X2xBYgOyUI

Is Windows 10 the right solution, or do I stack with the last Win7 ?

One first question VMMaker generated 120 Modlines. Is this the current maximum of modlines, or can I use more ?

thanks

Hi there,

I tried a fresh Win 10 Prof. System with a Radeon HD 7950

Current Windows 10 System Build 19041.vb:release.191206-1406 (Version 21H1)

Do I need to install the official AMD Adrenaline 18.5.1 Driver before EMU CRT?

Or only fresh windows winstall and CRT EMUDriver 2.0 Beta 15 18.5.1 and then Radeon settings 18.5.1?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hello all  :)

First of all, thank you all for continued support and helping noobs like myself with setups and configuration. I know it's tough to do without being in front of the device and programs in question. So, I will provide as much info I can think of. Also, included GM log file that was created with a test game (Street Fighter Alpha).

Second, I rushed to get this post up but I do plan to update this with my own screenshots later tonight. In the meantime, I have attached screenshots from the setup guide for reference.

My system setup:

@jitu, you've probably missed the "Install modes" step. No modes are shown in your mode list aside of the one provided by EDID emulation.

Hi Calamity! can't thank you enough for all the work you do for the community  :notworthy:

...so, to verify the modeline install, I generated and installed in vmmaker so I could take screenshots this time, but the results were different from the first time when it generated 15 modelines and installed 15 modelines. This was after disabling and enabling EDID several time using various presets and ending with Arcade_15.

This is the output I got when I ran vmmaker again:

Since it wasn't able to install some of them, I went through the EDID process again by disabling it first and then deleting modelines from driver, and restarting the PC just in case. Here are the steps taken:

Screenshots from LCD plugged into vga:

...and now it's not able to install any of them. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

@jitu, you don't have CRT Emudriver installed. That's regular AMD drivers.

I didn't even notice that till now but that's really strange since I haven't uninstalled it. All I have been doing is toggling EDID with different presets after installing crt emudriver, hence the test mode watermark at bottom right cornet.

Regardless, I installed the driver once again, opened vmmaker and it is now seeing crt emudriver. Then, I selected Arcade_15 preset, enabled EDID, switched to arcade monitor, generated modelines and installed it. Again, it's saying all of them rejected by driver.

After this, I attempted to toggle EDID and generate/install modelines, the system started crashing. Now I can't get a stable OS when attempting to install driver.

Side note: I have tried a method not mentioned in the guide which yielded GM to successfully use switchred but my desktop was also unusable since it was stretched out. What I did was (with crt emudriver installed), in vmmaker, I generated modelines and installed it. Then enabled EDID with Arcade_15. I was using my LCD as primary and arcade monitor as secondary, while telling GM to send output to the second display. When the initial screen comes up when launching a game, it shows the video resolution info and then below that the switchres info. I would have kept it that way if my setup called for multi monitor but my purpose is to have a single monitor running Bigbox frontend. This was not doable since the desktop is stretched on the arcade monitor using super res.

That sounds like the stock driver is being loaded instead of Emudriver. This is untested on Windows 11 by the way.

hey guys, desperately in need of assistance here

So, I have a 31khz CRT arcade monitor, I have Atomic FE set up as my emulator front end mainly playing mame games. I am using Win 7 and I have installed HD6950 with the crimson calamity drivers and CRT emudriver 2.0

so once i go to VMM maker and set up 31kfz monitor as my preset and then enable the EDID emulation for VGA analog and then connect my arcade monitor pic is perfect.

The problem I have is when I reboot windows, no matter what I try (even tried a HD5490) it initially boots the first bios screen and monitor is in sync, then the next bios screen (all 640x480 dos based text graphics) the pic looks like its doubling up but again not a major issue, but then and this is where i am worried, when its displaying the "loading windows" screen and then the black screen straight after this (prob around 10 seconds in total) pic is scrambled but the monitor is clicking non stop like its out of sync, once the windows desktop loads its fine and in sync

I have no idea how to get all windows loading screens to display 31khz 640 x 480 to stop the monitor clicking like this? i mean it works everytime and if this is not doing any damage to the monitor i can live with it but if its dangerous then how do i fix this?

Thanks so much

Steve

One quick solution is to measure how long the PC takes to boot then add I timer/delay unit/plug to delay the start of the monitor until Windows is booted.

Hi safire25,

You can flash your card with ATOM-15, checking the 31 kHz option only. This will ensure all frequencies during boot are safe.

Looks like AMD just released new drivers for its "legacy GPUs" which go back as far as the HD 5000 series.

Maybe it could be of interest to this project to update the custom CRT Emudriver to this version? I have no clue about the possible benefits.

Thank you for the modded drivers.

Unfortunately I've not been actively using GroovyMAME for a lot of time.
Back when I had the luxury of having some free time I bought a cab and all the PCBs I really wanted and that was pretty much it.

I'm still around mainly because I really like this project and I love seeing it evolve.

I posted that updated driver because there might still be someone using Windows7 64-bit along with old cards and that could come handy to them.

The inf's hash needs to be in the .cat (catalogue) file. It can be installed without it probably but it's not ideal.

Hello! I need a lead...

I got my hands on a small form factor PC with a RX Vega 10 video card for testing (hardware id: PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_15D8&SUBSYS_01231002&REV_C1).
The "RX Vega Series" is listed as compatible for crt_emudriver v2.0. However, the driver installer didn't recognize any compatible devices.
I'm testing this on Windows 10 Home 64-bits, with the driver version: "2.0 beta 15 (Adrenalin 18.5.1 for GCN* cards) for Windows 10 64-bits"

By inspecting the C0328911.inf file, I see there are other "RX Vega Series" models listed (Vega 3, Vega 8 and RX Vega 11...), but not mine, RX Vega 10.

I managed to force-install crt_emudriver by replacing the RX Vega 11's entry hardware id with the hardware id of my RX Vega 10. However, after installation and rebooting, it doesn't seem to be loading: the Device Manager status says: "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"; and vmmaker reports "no compatible drivers found".

Can something be done?
Could this be related to driver validation after my modification? (I didn't do anything about the driver's digital signing, I didn't touch the .cab file... The installation did go through though)
Or is it likely that the parts on my small factor PC are not the same as the "stock" ones, and can't be used with crt_emudriver at all?

Any tips, or even a confirmation that nothing can be done, would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance, and thanks again Calamity for your work on crt_emudriver and all its tools! (This would be my third crt-tv setup )

At the moment I can't give any probable date for this to happen.

Hi guys,

Rewriting this post as I have decided to go with a fresh reinstall of windows and the latest Emudriver version.

I have an ATI Radeon HD 4870 with an i7 CPU. On a fresh win10 install the setup.exe identified my card but would consistently blue screen during installation, and on reboot Windows had serious graphical issues (login screen pure black, no mouse cursor, can't see explorer windows or any program). Booting to safe mode and uninstalling the driver fixed the issue, but I would get the same result with each subsequent install attempt. I even tried installing some different Radeon drivers prior to the emudriver setup to no avail.

I gave up and went with a fresh win7 install. This time the Emudriver install completed, but after restart I had the same graphical issues as before (black screen instead of login screen, no cursor, menus and explorer simply do not show despite being active). This time Emudriver identified the card as generic instead of the Radeon HD 4870.

Any ideas? Emudriver 1.2 used to work with this card with no issues.

Thanks

Just wanted to post that we're a number of people who would greatly appreciate it if it happens, having the main PC for this purpose is nice, both from a CPU viewpoint (being able to utilizie the best most modern CPU you own for MAME) and just from a convenience point of view as many keep our 15kHz CRT's near our desks anyway.

Have a friend try get their dual GPU (modern nvidia GPU+HD5450) setup working with win11, which worked perfectly with vulkan and flawless CRTswitchres in win10. But despite my recommendation on ignoring win11, they decided to upgrade anway and ended up with the rejected by driver issue. Which is how I found out about the whole DX11 compatibility clash.
Personally I disabled unsuspecting win11 upgrades in every way I can.

All the work you've put into this is greatly appreciated either way, can't imagine a world with CRT's but without CRTEmudriver!  :applaud:

Unrelated to the above:
Been helping people set all of this up through discord a lot, as I threw together some guide PDF's for this setup:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fdo5z1mQ748

Hardware needed+CRTemudriver install+guide and presets for RA CRTSwitchres+gui alternatives (all on the CRT, or optionally game browsing on an LCD) and that sort of thing, very roughly put together but I'm easily available anyway.

So anyone who needs help, just hit me up and I'll gladly help getting the setup up and running, both emulation and windows native games that support 15kHz resolutions, have a bunch of those setup with batch+ahk scripts for perfect output set at game launch, no stutters or screen tearing at all. 4x internal resolutions for 3D systems at 2560 super res output (yes it makes a difference https://imgur.com/a/2eVfjla last pic is 4x internal) vulkan allowing for main GPU processing, outputting to the HD5450 while the CRT is set as main display for switchres. With no lag or a <16ms subframe lag cost (240 fps highspeed cam test showing perfect syncronization between CRT and modern monitor).

More than happy to share how any of this is done. :)

Your gpu was probably released after this version of the driver. We'd need a new CRT Emudriver based on a newer AMD driver in order to support it.

At the moment I can't give any probable date for this to happen.

Thanks for the offer.  I am super interested in your batch+ahk scripts etc.....guides for setting this up.  I recently setup Windows 10 + CRTEMU on a 15-25-31khz arcade screen, + AMD 280x + LaunchBox/BigBox which is using RetroArch and Groovymame.   I have some problems getting RetroArch to display resolutions etc....correctly, and Even GroovyMame has some horizontal refresh tearing that happens.

I am having an issue in retroarch running switchres where whenever an in game resolution switch occurs from 240p to 480i I get a slight stutter and I am able to see the desktop and taskbar for a second before it swaps back to the game. It doesn't matter if I use 2 monitors and hide the taskbar on the gaming monitor, because the desktop background will still flash and i'll get a stutter. I've been trying to troubleshoot this for a few days now and am lost on how to fix this. When switching in game from 480i to 240p, however, it is completely seamless with no issues at all there.

I am using the current build of crt emudriver with an hd 5450.

Any help or ideas as to why this might be happening would be great. Thanks so much! Other than this issue everything works great and it’s been so fun to play all these games on my crt!

I’d be happy to provide video of the issue if needed.

Helped you on discord, for anyone wondering just message me for the exact setup.
It was related to the taskbar positioned behind the full screen game, I made a batch+ahk script for primary display switching that also moves the taskbar away from the CRT onto one of the LCDs automatically.
With the taskbar no longer on the CRT it would no longer cause said slight interference during resolution switching.

I wonder if these drivers would be a good starting point for a updated CRT EMU driver.   They support multiple generations back.

That is a great idea. I use them myself.

Hello everyone
Does crt emudriver utilize s-video/composite video outputs or only vga? Got a hd 3450 with s vid and another on the way with composite and i was hoping To maybe use crt emu with switchres instead of just constant 480i. thanks in advance

No it doesn't, it generates a 15kHz signal in RGB only, RGB with separate Horizontal and Vertical sync, so a TV with RGB support will need a sync combiner as well (I recommend the UMSA as it also reworks the sync signal for better compatibility, but others such as VGA2Scart works).

HD3450 isn't recommended as only 5xxx + cards such as HD5450 can do Emulated EDID (giving you a lot of modelines), just helped someone wanting to set this up and they ended up buying an HD5450 to make this work properly with CRTSwitchres.

Dual GPU is a really great way to do it as you can without introduced lag (under a frame) output to the CRTEmudriver GPU, but have your modern GPU handle the processing for GPU utilizing emulators like Flycast.
https://imgur.com/a/2eVfjla (Here you see Dolphin Blue running at 640px, 1280px and 2560px, the modern GPU allows you to run games at super res internally, which makes for a crazy detailed horizontal resolution, abusing the fact that CRT TV's don't have a horizontal resolution.

From RGB you can use something like a wakabavideo transcoder to transcode into a color space your TV accepts, they sell VGA(RGBHV)>Component(YPbPr) that also combines the HV sync into one for TV's. I believe the also have a transcoder for composite. But you're going to lose a lot of visual fidelity with composite. I will have to ask Jam about this, as I'm unsure what someone limited to composite would have to do.

Maybe you should look into RGB modding your TV.

Keep in mind that if you're in the US with a US TV you'll be able to play console games perfectly with Switchres, but arcade stuff will be limited to games that run fine at 60Hz, since arcade games also go anywhere from 55-59Hz which US TV's don't like (Euro CRT's do sync anywhere between 50-60Hz though). It's fine to speed up 58Hz>60Hz, but games that run below that will be a much worse experience at the incorrect speed. You can read about what refreshrates different games have on arcade italia database adb.

I've posted my guide earlier in this thread for RA CRTSwitchres (by Calamity as well), but just PM me and I can help in detail to get this up and running.

I hope so! Seems like a sound idea. Some users that I've helped are asking me about the windows 11 situation, so there are a lot of people who wish to use win11 now.
I'll stay on win10 as long as possible personally but when it comes to a long term plan something will have to be developed. Nothing beats CRTEmudriver+CRTSwitchres since old games came in all sorts of resolutions, refreshrates and sometimes switched modes mid game.

And beyond emulation there still are new windows native games that come out in 240p 4:3, like Steel Assault for example, plays perfectly with a CRTEmuGPU+RTX/GTX setup and multimonitortool batch scripts (sets CRT modeline as you launch the game), other games need .ahk scaling scripts for perfect 1x scaling. Bit of a long single time setup, but totally worth it and something we eventually will need win11 support to keep doing.

I'll keep helping people to set this up as much as possible, the more people we are who use this and know how to set things up the better it is for everyone.

You mean one of those old cards with TV-out support via a s-video or composite output directly on the card? No, CRTEMU won't give work for that. You are stuck with your interlaced mode. The cards are all too old for CRTEMU 2.0+ anyway.

The only way I can think of would be to hack the video driver so that it outputs the TV signal via VGA head. I did this once about 15 years ago to get YPbPr out of a Radeon 9XXX?, using Powerstrip, but that software is old and not maintained anymore.

Anyway, it was a huge hassle. Better solution is to use a transcoder, and that is one reason why we designed the GreenAntz VGA and SCART to YPbPr units. They do the sync combining but, unfortunately they don't do svideo or composite, the colour spaces are different - you would get a picture, but it would be monochrome.

I do believe I've seen a Jam/wakabavideo unit with VGA in and composite out. You'd have to ask him directly regarding availability. He makes good stuff and gives support. There may be other composite transcoders out there, but I can't attest to quality. Trouble with the cheap adapters is that they probably just give you that 480i composite signal output.

RGB modding the TV is a great idea, the best, if you can manage a little soldering. If it can't be RGB modded, often you can component (YPbPr) mod it, especially with later mid-1990s+ TVs with the mega-jungle ~64-pin chips that integrate the OSD function, thus blocking that route for RGB modding. I wrote a guide for component-modding a TV (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,165932.0.html), is usually simpler than RGB modding as the inputs are often just there waiting, no need to OSD hack etc. The next steps for that would be to have a look inside the TV, and to get schematics or at least a part number for the jungle chip.

Hello!
Who can make me some explanations about the different choice of drivers
I have some ATI cards... the best that I can use for CRTEMUDRIVERS are HD7770 or R7 240
I don't understand what drivers are the best for these

- Adrenalin 18.5.1 for GCN* cards
or
- Crimson 16.2.1 for GCN* cards

I suppose both are fine but what difference?

The operating system is Windows 7 64bit

Any current plans of expanding out Emudriver's support to newer AMD cards (like the RX 6400)?
