Title: So I gotta ask here regarding American Pinball and the Monkey drama.
Post by: Ian on October 28, 2018, 12:30:53 am
I wont say which way I lean. But it is an interesting debate...

So American Pinball just released their Oktoberfest pinball.

In my opinion it looks pretty awesome!

Here is the back glass....

Did you notice anything? Did you see anything off? Anything offensive? I know it was a lot to take in. Check the back glass one more time.

let's zoom in....

Monkey rape. But seriously people are saying it clearly depicts sexual assault. Many are offended and the sensitivities have been hurt.  American Pinball released an apology today regarding the monkey grabbing two women.

I guess my question out there is this. Is this a case of sexual assault and should be removed immediately? Or is this just a matter of SJW being too sensitive about what is produced on a Pinball machine?

It's a monkey.  A monkey grabbing a butt is as sexualized as a toddler grabbing a butt.  People need to get a life and stop complaining about poorly rendered fictional monkeys and how they may or may not be assaulting fictional women.

This kind of unfunny BS has been found in pinball art for decades. Elicited the same sigh and eye roll that all of it does from me.

I don't follow pinball, but this is the first new pinball machine I've seen in a long time that isn't relying on some type of licensed theme.
Kudos to them for that.

Houdini - American Pinball
Total Nuclear Annihilation - Spooky Pinball
Dialed In - Jersey Jack Pinball
Full Throttle - Heighway Pinball
Big Juicy Melons - Stern (or WhizBang or whatever)
Wrath of Olympus - Homebrew

To name a few recent non-licensed pins...

SWJ's are now known as  NPC's...  (Non Player Characters)

As they pretty much Parrot what they are "Programmed",  without any logic / reasoning / rational thoughts... just like RPG NPCs.

They have no real Empathy... and any seen,  is an Act of deception, and manipulation, via Replication.

They actively search for things to be Offended and Outraged by... so that they can get  "Attention Points".

The Worst thing you can do when attacked by an NPC,  is to Apologize.   The NPC will see an Apology as a sign of Weakness...
and such a thing is like fresh blood in shark infested waters.   It will embolden them to attack with even greater force and numbers,
as they seek to destroy their Prey,  into Oblivion.

They have no remorse, no Guilt, no empathy, no compassion, no morals, and no spine.
They are similar to Terminators.   They do not forget... and they do not Forgive.
They will continue to attack targets, for years and years... if there is nothing / nobody to stop them.

They have no problem destroying a Business, and effecting countless lives / families / finances...etc.

They are not Really outraged either.  Its all an Act.   Furthermore... they tend to be the biggest Hypocrites you have
even known.  Often caught in the most Foul acts and behaviors... far worse than Anything they have ever Screeched at
others about.

Of course... there are plenty of NPCs that pahTROLL these boards too.   One even temporarily banning me, for melting a Snowflake with facts.

Well I posted this because to be honest I thought it was just a cartoon monkey. Eye roll time! It wasn't funny, nor was it that serious to me. I told people on facebook that it's just a flippin Monkey! And I got hit with the whole Ian is pushing for the continuation of Rape Culture. It kinda bummed me out. Especially since I really don't have any dogs in this fight. I can't afford a $7400 pin. So that's off the table, and I certainly don't see what was funny about the stupid monkey. And obviously I don't want to see my name in conjunction with sexual abuse. What I saw was with perspective, common sense and a sense of humor. I didn't read into the damn monkey. I didn't make the connection that sadly people get abused. And anything that makes light of that situation is perpetuating Rape Culture. And frankly who the hell would ever want that? I just learned a valuable lesson this weekend. When people are offended, let them be there could be more to it.

And social media is a total bummer.

This. Had the women been outraged in the graphic (as one would expect), it might have played better as a joke.

Animal contact is sexual assault now? Guess I need to #MeToo my dog for kissing me in my sleep this morning and sue my cat for groping my balls when he jumped into my lap.

It's impossible to take these people seriously.

Well the argument is... yes a real monkey has no motivation for this. However, a middle aged white guy drawing this is were it gets creepy to those people. The guys intention is for the monkey to grab the ladies butt and he thinks its funny in a perverted way.

You don't have to be a SJW it find this creepy.  I'm no fan of political correctness but this is dumb unless they were hoping for a controversy for publicity.  A backglass should be easy to swap out.

Exactly. How tone deaf do you have to be to not think this wasn’t going to cause controversy?

Well the bulk of pinball collectors are old white dudes, probably because they are the only people that can afford it.  I guess the idea is to hyper-sexualize the artwork to try to get them to buy it, but personally I'd never buy anything I'd be too embarrassed to show to my mother, and a lot of the non-themed stuff is like this.  It makes the whole "family friendly" response a little laughable.  I mean yeah they are fully clothed, but the table is littered with pin-up models.  There's nothing wrong with that, but you've gotta own it if that's the direction you are going.

Again though... it's a fictional monkey so I think everyone's virtue and self worth is still in tact this time.

The playfield needs better art before the back glass.

I don't find it offensive but I also don't understand why it was green lit in the first place.  Have the monkey drinking a beer lookin at cleavage or something /shrugs
I'm more offended by the woman with the mustache on the right slingshot plastic (and Im not even offended by it!)

The smiles and posture imply consent.
If that's true, then the message is "girls love being groped by any old bro who sneaks up behind them." That's a bad message. Yes, it's a stupid image which is inconsequential in the grand scheme, but when that ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- is everywhere, it adds up. I like that this kind of thing gets called out. Plus, anti-PC heroes get to feel self-righteous about everybody else's over-sensitivity, so it's a win-win.

What the smiles imply to me is "if I don't laugh off monkey bro, then I'll be labeled an uptight ---smurfette---, but if I sock him one, I risk getting the crap beat out of me either now or later, so laugh-it-off it is"

No mention of the hot dog or the crotch-level stream of white stuff? I suppose that's just background-level objectification.

Its a bratwurst , a traditional German food, makes sense to have them being eaten at Oktoberfest. She's just holding it up, like for display for someone taking a picture. Its not as if her mouth is agape or its shoved in her mouth. As for the "crotch-level stream of white stuff" I believe thats just the lace of the dirndl dress.

Opt2not, li'l buddy, you can come out now. The petty pretext (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,139885.0.html) for the last dog-pile has been declared null and void. Twice, now.

I clicked a "you have this user blocked, click here to view post" and it happened to be the one in the infinity war calculus thread. Your post was well thought out, made valid points, cited a great example I didn't even think of  and I agreed with you 100% on it. So I was like "Alright! Drake and I can start a new!". Yet here we are. I will do my best to not read or reply to your posts, feel free to return the favor.

This is when the thread went from civil to petty. Please stop. I know you guys have a history with one another, but if everyone refrained from taking the first shot there wouldn't be a second shot. Pretty please?

Is there any reason at all to have a monkey on that backglass?  Are they part of traditional German festivals?

The the monkey is a sort of Mascot for American Pinball. He was introduced in Houdini, because I guess Houdini thought he could up his testosterone by monkey gland transplant. So they put a monkey with band-aides where his Junk used to be.

Here is an article about it, it is real. Not clear if Houdini actually tried it or not.

So now they want to put the monkey in all their pins... naughty monkey.

Monkey....... No wonder I was so bad at Where's Waldo? .

Is non-consensual groping abhorrent, or that it is done by a male creature for his own pleasure?
