I just picked up the consoles and I am wondering what some of the killer must have games are. I imagine through ebay I can get a pretty solid collection.
Any suggestions?
-
I lost my whole Sophmore year of college to Crazy Taxi and Virtua Tennis for the Dreamcast. Crazy Taxi is spectacular with a steering wheel. Virtua Tennis is one of the greatest 4 player games ever, and I freakin hate tennis.
Also good
Powerstone
Powerstone 2
Mr. Driller
Chu Chu Rocket
Dynamite Cop (Very short game, but super fun the first few time through)
I need to check my collection and get back to you with some more.
-
Thanks, that helps a bunch!
-
If you like stealth games, Tenchu for the PS1 is a great game. If you play it right, you will be playing it for hours.
Syphon Filter was also a sleeper hit for the PS1. But avoid Syphon Filter 2 & 3. Not anywhere near as good as the 1st one.
Hard to find the controller...But if you like fishing games, Bass Landing is an excellent fishing game, but it's best with the official Agetec Fishing Controller. Other fishing controllers are crap.
Fear Effect is also a good game, if you like 3rd person shooters
-
Most of the games for DC were ---smurfin---' awesome. Here's some off the top of my head:
Cannon Spike
King of Fighters Dream Match 99
King of Fighters Evolution
King of Fighters 2000
King of Fighters 2001
King of Fighters 2002
Marvel vs. Capcom
Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Capcom vs. SNK
Capcom vs. SNK PRO
Capcom vs. SNK 2
Street Fighter 3: Third Strike
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Street Fighter Zero 3
Super Street Fighter 2X
Sonic Adventure
Sonic Adventure 2
Power Stone
Power Stone 2
Garou: Mark of the Wolves
Last Blade 2
Guilty Gear X
Gigawing 2
Gunbird 2
Soul Calibur
Spawn
Dead or Alive 2
Super Puzzle Fighter 2X
Ikaruga
Shenmue
Shenmue 2
Jet Grind Radio
Zero Gunner 2
MDK2
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
Rayman 2
Skies of Arcadia
Grandia 2
Virtua Tennis
Virtua Tennis 2
Mr. Driller
Chu Chu Rocket
Bust-A-Move 4
Seaman
Dino Crisis
Resident Evil: Code Veronica
Sword of Berserk: Guts' Rage
Mortal Kombat Gold
Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2
Project Justice
Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram
Headhunter
Plasma Sword
Space Channel 5
Outtrigger
Slave Zero
That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I suggest trying all of those. Most of those games are heavily addicting. I would have to say out of all my systems (including the PS2 and 360) I play my DC the most. Thanx.
-See Ya!!!
-
Wow, Hellfromabove, I take it you are a fan of the fighters? It is truly a travesty that I left Jet Grind Radio and Space Channel 5 off of my list. Those games are sweet. Seaman is pretty sweet as well. It is really more of a novelty to show off to your friends. Seaman is pretty funny. I just ended up getting way too impatient, and I set down one day and kept rolling the DC's internal clock forward so he would grow a lot faster.
-
Yeah, I actually play fighters professionaly. I have a team and I'm the team captain. Next to SNES, DC has to be the best system out there. Yeah, Gen and Saturn were awesome but DC... WOW!!! I was so sad when I heard they were going to stop making it. Thanx.
-See Ya!!!
P.S.: Where the smurf is my Shenmue 3!!!!!! :soapbox: :hissy: :soapbox:
-
Yeah, I actually play fighters professionaly. I have a team and I'm the team captain.
Ok, so how exactly does that work? I have seen it a little on tv, but it was always FPS or Starcraft or something like that. Do you just go places and enter tournaments. How many tournaments are there? How often? Just wondering.
-
It depends, tournaments are thrown randomly here and there but the main big ones in like the East and West coast are announced like 3 moths prior the event. Usually, on weekends, my friends and I get together and we practice multiple games at a time. We either do it at eachothers house or at the local arcade called Family Fun Arcade. This arcarde is known in the fighting game scene for like the best in the US. If you want to learn Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike, this is the place to go. Apart from Japan the guys here are the best. Me and my crew are then like the top in Marvel 2 ;D . We've been practicing our butts off because the world tournament is coming up in Vegas this August. If you want to learn more the best place to learn about competitive fighting is at www.shoryuken.com . That's like the main hangout and match making place for fighting gamers. Thanx.
-See Ya!!!

ps1 :
metal gear solid
r type delta
ape escape
resident evil 1
syphon filter 1 and 2(AWSOMENESS) and 3 was eh
tony hawks pro skater 1 and 2
dino crisis 2
dreamcast - most hellfromabove mentioned and more :
resident evil 2 and 3 (MUST MUST MUST)
confidentional mission(gun)
virtua striker 2 (awsome arcade style soccer)
street fighter 3 double impact (first and second version of sf3 together)
house of the dead 2 (gun)
under defeat (vertical shooter)
these are the must have I can think of for now
Syphon Filter was also a sleeper hit for the PS1. But avoid Syphon Filter 2 & 3. Not anywhere near as good as the 1st one.
WHAT ?!?!?
2 is just AS GOOD as 1 if not better. I personally liked 2 better because it was longer(2 cd),better weapons, music, etc. I will agree about 3 though..it was rushed and the "coolness" wasnt there.
Ok, so how exactly does that work? I have seen it a little on tv, but it was always FPS or Starcraft or something like that. Do you just go places and enter tournaments. How many tournaments are there? How often? Just wondering.
tournaments are held randomly at either arcades or console gathering. major tournies like ECC and EVO can have players anywhere from 100-200 per game and there are people coming from all over the country AND from japan, canada to compete. This years evo is supposed to have a grand price of $5k per game and a car I think.
there are online tourments through kaillera(online mame) and xbox live too but you dont really win anything other than pride and you get to make fun of everyone you beat :laugh2:
I've won various online tourments before. like 5 street fighter tournies on A@H.com(pop up land) and I won random capcom vs snk 2 tourny on shoryuken.com.

One game I keep going back to for the PS One is Final Fantasy VII.....I've already played it every which way possible, but keep going back. As many copies of the game have been released over the years, it shouldn't be much to find one somewhere fairly cheap.
-
Woah. How has nobody mentioned Castlevania: Symphony of the Night yet? Probably the best PS1 game ever made and certainly the pinnacle of the Castlevanias. I'm including a PS1 emulator in my cab just for that game.
-

You'd think that, but FF7 is still insanely expensive. Greatest Hits versions go for a bit cheaper, but original versions can fetch $40-70 on ebay, and they are not very easy to find in used game stores.
And even though I could technically make a profit on a game I bought almost 10 years ago.... I still won't sell my copy :)
EDIT: here, take a look at this craziness (http://cgi.ebay.com/Final-Fantasy-VII-7-ORIGINAL-RELEASE-New-Factory-Sealed_W0QQitemZ104752237682QQihZ020QQcategoryZ62053QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)
I wish I had bought every one I could find when it was released... it might be able to put me through college

-
WOW I just looked at prices for buying dreamcast games some are going for close to $300 new thats insane
-

YEah, that's how I want to play it on my cab......one day ;)
Can anyone hook me up with a US version of MDK2 ?
-
all are very good games, but everyone is leaving out a fun game, Typing of the Dead. hahaha, i love that game. i remember driving all over the bay area to track down the dreamcast keyboard adapter so i could use my own keyboard. man, if they had that in highschool when i was learning to type, well...i guess i would be more of a geek.
-
I really like Toy Commander on DreamCast (just played it last night actually). That is a really under appreciated game I think, it would a perfect fit for the new nintendo they are making (holding the wii controller like a toy airplane and stuff would be awsome).

Remember folks, the PSOne is essentially the same hardware as the Sony ZN series of arcade hardware.
Plenty of folks struggle to get ZN games running at full speed in MAME. Of course there's ZiNc, but why not just chuck a PSOne in a cabinet?
Arcade systems based on Sony Playstation Hardware (Including Capcom ZN and Namco System 11 to mention just 2):
http://www.system16.com/base.php#1
And just SOME of the games:
Battle Arena Toshinden 1, 2
Tekken 1, 2, 3
Soul Edge
Point Blank 1, 2, 3,
Star Gladiator
Rival Schools
Street Fighter EX
Mr Driller
DDR / Bemani
Raystorm/Ray Crisis
Bloody Roar
Xevious 3D
etc, etc. Definite must-haves.
-
PSOne:
Spyro the Dragon
Crash Bandicoot (all of 'em)
Rayman
Ape Escape (MONKEYS! YAY! ;D)
-
I was just given a boxed Dreamcast by a buddy. I want this to share a vertical MAME cab with the PC. Anyone have a list of all the Dreamcast shooters that support being spun vertcally?
-
I just picked up the consoles and I am wondering what some of the killer must have games are. I imagine through ebay I can get a pretty solid collection.

There is truly one game that makes the DC worth owning - :notworthy: FirePro Wrestling D.
Now, if you're only into wrestling a little or just like fighing games in general, you'll still get off on this title.
However, if you're WAY into wrestling or were back in the "Golden Age" of pro wrestling in the 80's, THIS title will likely be one of your favorite games of all time. It is mine!
It comes with tons of premade wrestlers, but you can create your own. And not JUST how they look, but what moves they do and how frequently, how often they'll go for the pin, go outside the ring, climb the corners, etc. Only thing this game is missing is manager interference! >:D
There is one major drawback to FirePro D, however. Nearly all of the game is in Japanese. There are many translation pages out there. I used one of them to guide me through when I was learning the game and, in no time, I was making my own wrestlers and setting up tourneys, etc.
TREMENDOUS GAME and, like I said, the most compelling reason to own a Dreamcast, hands down.
-
DC:
Death Crimson OX
Virtura Cop
Dynamite Cop
Macross M3
Fighting Force 2
Zombie Revenge
PSX:
Strider 1 and 2

Metal Gear
I am a big Robotech fan

Don't forget Parappa the Rapper for PS1. Fantastic.
-
Don't forget Parappa the Rapper for PS1. Fantastic.
If you like that sort of thing, Um Jammer Lammy and Vib Ribbon are worthy also.
Vib Ribbon is cool because you can use your own music. Give it a whirl with Prodigy, or some other heavy beat music. Heart attack city! :)

-
few cool psx games
armored core 1&2
tecmo's deception 1 2 and later are good but the tecno's name was changed to another
xeno gears
-
The only dreamcast game I can think of not posted is Mars Matrix.
Im not very good at this, I am more of a Saturn fan than both Dreamcast and PSX put together...
-
No one has mentioned Legend of Mana for PS1, the game is just beautiful, if not a little odd. It's all 2d, but the backgrounds and sprites are amazing. The gameplay is kinda odd though. It is an RPG, but your HP reset after each battle. Magic is all done through Musical Instruments (which you may forge yourself), you can also forge your own weapons, armor, grow your own fruits, grow your own pet monsters, and build Golems. So yeah, and you build the world too, so it is kinda cool.
I also like Deception 3, Dragonseeds, and Alpha Boost (This is just an arcade shoot em up)
Later,
Lotus

DC:
Fighting Force 2
??? :dizzy: ???
-
BUSHIDO BLADE!
... throw some dirt on yo face!
-
I'm doing up NullDc in my cab because i can do 4 players with it, but some of my favorites for it are:
Sword of the Berzerk
Record of Lodoss Wars
Marvel Vs Capcom 2
Powerstones 2
Ooga Booga :)
Florigan Brothers :)
There's a ton of home brew stuff for the dreamcast scene, and just until recently they just stopped making dreamcast games. I probably have close to 400 dreamcast games, i was an addict!
-
Ill mention the new shumps on it:
Radilgy
Under Defeat
Last Hope
Trigger Hearts Excelica
Karous
All released on the Dreamcast last year or this one.
-
this is a good page for PSX Games http://www.racketboy.com/retro/2007/01/best-undiscovered-playstation-ps1-psx.html
Trap Gunner was an excellent game, a top down shooter, much like powerstone, that had great strategy gameplay. Best played with more than one person ;-)
-Mal
-
Fur Fighters. HIGHLY under rated.
-
PSOne: Brave Fencer Musashi
I just got the sequel on PS2 for $4.99 ..... I liked the first title much more
-
I was just given a boxed Dreamcast by a buddy. I want this to share a vertical MAME cab with the PC. Anyone have a list of all the Dreamcast shooters that support being spun vertcally?
I know this is years old but Ikaruga is an excellent (and hard!) shooter that can be played vertical or horizontal.
-
Well that horizontal mode is for sideways monitors, not really for horizontal gaming. I say this because when ever I try that game that way it makes me seasick.
PSX also has a Raiden game.
-
I loved Raiden... great game.. spent way too much money on it in the arcade!! What game in particular was it?
-
I only got to play a couple of dreamcast games, but one that I loved to play was Starlancer.
-
Ps1: WIP3OUT was probably the best hover/racing game on the system. Castlevania SOTN was the reason I bought a PSP and the latest Castlevania with SOTN as an "unlockable" game. :)
DC: Ikaruga (probably the best shooter ever) and Soul Caliber. Crazy Taxi and Chu Chu Rocket are also lots of fun. Shenmue if you like somewhat lengthy RPGs -- it's very tastefully artistic.
-
Another fantastic Dreamcast game is Samba De Amigo and/or Samba De Amigo ver2000. If you can get the maracas ofcourse.
And who can forget Typing of the Dead?
-
DC
18 Wheeler - Top Game
Ecco
Virtual Fighter 2D
Crazy taxi 2
Gauntlet Legends
Sonic
Soul Reaver
NLB
PS1
Soul Blade
Atari 20th Anniversary
GTA
Driver
Wipeout
Ridge Racer Type 4
Abe's Odysee
Colony Wars
Tomorrow Never Dies
<I have a list somewere with the rest>
The best thing about the PS1 is the fact you can play nearly all of them on the PSP.
-
No one has mentioned Legend of Mana for PS1, the game is just beautiful, if not a little odd. It's all 2d, but the backgrounds and sprites are amazing. The gameplay is kinda odd though. It is an RPG, but your HP reset after each battle. I LOVED THAT GAME!
i was a tekken freak ,all three games, ridge racer and ridge racer revolution, krazy ivan was really good too
-
N2O (nitrous oxide) is the best ps1 game ever
played it on a big screen with the ps3 upscaling and surround sound :dizzy:....it about gave me a seizure, but in a good way ;D
if you can find it, then buy it
Part of the game is collecting little "E" pills and mushrooms it tripped out looking tubes whilst listening to a full Crystal Method CD (which will play in any audio cd player)
FFVII wasted quite a few of days...There was also a really awesome rally car game that rivalled the PS2's early games graphically, but I can't remember its name
-
The best fighter for the PSX is *drumroll*:
Tobal #2 (Import)
If you can get your hands on this sucker, it'll provide you with many hundreds of hours of awesome gameplay and has something like 200+ playable characters. Friggin sick and HIGHLY recommended.
-
PS1
Twisted Metal - great 2 player game
-
Dreamcast: Guity Gear X, Fatal fury mark of the wolves, Boarder down.
-
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this one - but Bishi Bashi Special for the PSOne was great fun! A real favourite of mine! ;D
-
i am kinda shocked only one person mentioned Toy Cammander for the Dreamcast. Expendable is a pretty good game as well if you are into the whole Mercs style shoot-em-up.
speaking of which do not forget Loaded for the PS1 as well. great game, but i heard Loaded 2 is awful. killer soundtrack on the first as well.
-
I can't believe no one has mentioned Einhander (PS1)! It is a GREAT side scrolling pseudo-3D shooter.
-
Super Street Fighter 2X-not sure if this is the same as the puzzle fighter though im certain it is
It was actually 'Super Street Fighter II X for Matching Service'. Basically in Japan, Super Street Fighter II Turbo is called Super Street Fighter II X. The 'Matching Service' thing was basically a Server u connect to in japan either using the BBA or the inbuilt modem and you could Vs ppl.
Oh and btw, Wipeout 2097/XL is the best wipeout game ever made (Wipeout Pure/Pulse come a close 2nd).
-
there's plenty of titles for the psone and most of the people here name the popular ones. I like these titles:
-parasite eve 1 (never got to play 2 though)
-brave fencer musashi
-omega boost
-wild arms
-megaman 8 and the X series.
-
as far as dreamcast goes, i really liked Rez, Spawn: in the demon's hand, Zero Gunner 2, Bangai-o, Project Justice, and Karous.
i could go on, but there's too many good games.
-
Dreamcast wise, I always loved playing Virtua Tennis, Metropolis Street Racer... still have Shenmue but never got into it. Seriously going to have to pick up some of those titles mentioned though. Good list guys.
-
Crazy Taxi and Grand theft Auto 2 for Dreamcast.
For Playstation:
IF youve never played Akumajo Dracula X (Castlevania Symphony of the night)
its the last and greatest 2D Castlevania ever.
I was always waiting and wondering when another Castlevania 2 would come out.
the only thing i never liked much (after 2 Came out) with any of the castlevania game is that they were Linear and wouldnt let you explore anything.
symphony is the best of the best and it has awesome music.
-
I can't believe you guy's forgot about Intelligent Cube for PSX!

It's one of the best puzzle games I've ever played with a unique soundtrack! No boring or irritating tunes!
-
Yep Rez is awesome. Also love Dead Or Alive and Soul Calibur.
Guilty pleasure......Heavy Metal Geomatrix.
-
Might have old dream cast in storage, I will keep you posted.
-
I've still got a Dreamcast, the keyboard for Phantasy Star and a handful of games stored away somewhere in my garage, but if you get a Dreamcast that can play imports the game "Sword of the Berserk: Guts Rage" was an awesome 3rd person brawler with a decent story.
Oh and as other's have said, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is one of the best games made for the PS1.
-
Dreamcast:
Armada
Elemental Gimmick Gear
San Francisco Rush 2049
Vigilante 8 2nd Offence
Playstation:
Twisted Metal 2
Critical Depth
Rogue Trip
Dino Crisis 2
Silent Hill
Silent Hill 2
Parasite Eve 2
Brave Fencer Mushashi
Blood Omen
-
PlayStation
Jet Moto 3 is the best hover racing game out there, once you get the grappling technique down it's awesome.
-
bump
-
bump
why are you bumping a sticky?
-
For the Dreamcast; PowerStone, 1 & 2 HANDS DOWN!!!
-
In ps1, i only played digimon world 1 and destroction derby!
-
I saw somebody mentioned last hope above. Be sure to Last Hope: Pink Bullets. Basically, they re-released it with pink bullets because they were hard to differentiate from the background in the original. Outstanding game after this was fixed.
NG Dev have some made some other great DC games since then too:
Gunlord
Fast Strikers
NEO XYX (don't think one is out yet)
-
Marvel VS SNK
oh I wanna play this one :dizzy: :dunno ???
-
Hopefully your ps1 can play imports because both of my suggestions are Japanese region releases (or use an emulator)
1. Chippoke Ralph no Daibouken: The Adventure of Little Ralph (awesome 2d platformer. You have a sword and can combo things... watch a youtube vid or try it).
2. Umihara Kawase Shun (2d platformer with a grappling hook and awesome physics. Technically it is a fishing pole but fun all the same. Umihara Kawase is available for snes/super famicom if that is easier to test drive.) You really should check this one out on youtube and play it as well. It's like bionic commando but unique.
To answer an old question: (dreamcast shmups that can be rotated aka tate mode)
stolen shamelessly from a racketboy.com thread.

As expensive as the PS1 Final Fantasy games are, I still suggest you get all three. The Final Fantasy games truly are works of art. The PS1 games include 7, 8, and 9. In case you get scammed, you should know that Final Fantasy 7 has 3 discs, and Final Fantasy 8 and 9 both have 4 discs. As for Dreamcast games, you should definitely get the Sonic Adventure games. And before you buy these next ones, you should look them up as they are not for everyone. These games are Space Channel 5 and Samba De Amigo. They are a bit weird for some but I enjoyed them. Have fun! ;D

i wonder that nobody did mention Einhander for PS1 already? or did i read too fast? but you won't get this gem of a game cheap today because it was only sold in japan and USA and today it's very rare. glad that i still own it. others: every Ridge Racer/Rage Racer, every Wipeout, Soul Edge aka Soul Blade, every Biohazard aka Resident Evil, Air Combat/Ace Combat. edit: forgot to add Final Fantasy VII/VIII/IX, Gran Turismo 1 & 2.
for my opinion Virtua Fighter 3tb and Sega Rally 2 were bad parts on the DC compared to the model 3 originals but VF 3tb was a much better conversion than SR 2 and could be worth a look because it's cheap to get.
other good games where Headhunter, Shotuko Battle 1/2 (aka Tokyo Extreme Racer 1/2), Metropolis Street Racer, Shenmue I & II (expensive, rare), Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive 2 (both fighting games are far ahead in positive ways -fun and technical- from VF 3tb), Airforce Delta (aka Deadly Skies), Power Stone, Marvel vs Capcom I/II, House of Dead 2, Biohazard CV aka Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Daytona USA 2001 and there's except of both Shenmue's another rare, expensive gamte to collect: Skies of Arcadia, one of the last great SEGA games - great japanese style RPG. edit: added SEGA GT (Gran Turismo contender, but has not the quality GT has in fact of car controls but makes also fun to play. the european version has more car manufacturers and of course cars then), Le Mans 24h from Infogrames, another great racing game and in my opinion it has the best graphics for a car racer on DC. also Killer Loop was a great Wipeout rival and was made good. i also forgot to mention Crazy Taxi 1 & 2.

Yeap about 9 years ago :p
I can't believe no one has mentioned Einhander (PS1)! It is a GREAT side scrolling pseudo-3D shooter.
Shotuko/Tokyo is great, if you want a laugh find the Gameboy Advance version, its terrible.

Illbleed, Blue Stinger, D2, Power Stone, and Power Stone 2. The only game affordable now for most people is blue stinger. The other games are priced high now a days. Illbleed I believe is the most expensive of the bunch and for good reason. It's probably the best of the bunch but Blue Stinger which was made by the same people is no slouch either. Blue Stinger definitely inspired games like Dead Rising and in some ways Dead Space with the enemies looking similar. I'm sure all these games have been recommended for Dreamcast already. If you don't have illbleed in your collection already you probably won't ever. I think the game is like 80 or 100 bucks online for a complete NTSC-U copy.
