Title: How much does 3/4" MDF cost per square foot?
Post by: The cranky hermit on June 13, 2003, 02:41:39 pm
I called Home Depot to ask, and I'm still on hold waiting for someone to answer. I figure my post will get noticed before my phone call will.

Just a quick note... you might want to ask HD if they will still cut the MDF. I live near two, and neither will cut MDF anymore due to health concerns.

Any reason I can't cut the MDF? I'm going to be working on this project with a relative, who owns several woodworking tools.

cut it yourself..never trust those dumbassS down there...sometimes they cut it wrong size on purpose >:(.
Thats just how I feel about home depot cutting my wood(I want things to go perfect :P).
As for health concern,my local doesnt cut particle board because it releases the so called "toxic fume/gas/whatever".
There was a topic regarding this "home depot cant cut wood" but I cant find it..anyone else remember which thread?

I am sure it is fine (although I would wear a mask). You are  making a few cuts, but the HD people cut a lot of wood every day. It was only an issue with me because getting a 4x8 sheet of anything into my little jeep is just not possible unless I get it cut first.

What would you use to cut it? A circular blade?

You can cut it with with pretty much anything.  During my project I used a table saw, skil saw, jig saw and router, doing different cuts on the MDF.  Use a table saw where you can for the straightest cuts.

If you are going to build the whole cabinet out of MDF I would look for the "lightweight" MDF, it costs a bit more, but weighs less, and when you use 2 1/2 sheets for your cabinet, it gets pretty heavy.

I'm just building the CP. Maybe I'll build a cabinet someday, but right now I don't have the money or time.

I cut the pieces for my cabinet out yesterday (my project is just starting) and I used a skil saw for most of the straight cuts, and a jigsaw in the places that a skil saw just would not go.

A bought a long metal guide at HD to help with the straight cuts. It really helped with the skil saw, but I found I did better freehand with the jig saw.
