Title: Network emulation in Supermodel (not an April fool's gag)
Post by: retrorepair on April 01, 2013, 09:59:21 am
I was worried at first but noticed the video was posted on March 31st ;)

Supermodel Work-in-Progress Update - Network Board Emulation (Daytona USA 2 Live Mode) - 4/1/2013 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6X7dOARuiE#)

http://www.supermodel3.com/WhatsNew.html (http://www.supermodel3.com/WhatsNew.html)

Apparently it's not going to be public for a while yet but I'm sure some of you (isamu) are going to flip over this, myself included  :notworthy:

Downright devious of them to post this on April 1st!

I don't believe they are cruel enough to fake this.

If memory serves, the first release was on April 1st too :)

Well that's 12 kinds of awesome.

We'll have to schedule a race for the whole forum.  But please let's do Daytona and not one of the stranger racers I don't have a clue about.  ;)

Yeah this bit of progress in incredible. I've gained so much respect for Bart and NIK for putting their life priorities first while still doing bits of work here and there on the emu and not completely abandoning it. Great job guys.

Will be a day of orgasmic proportions when we can race online in Supermodel  :notworthy:  :applaud:

I keep wondering if I should just go ahead and start building a SECOND cabinet....  I have two sons, and in a year or so they'll be fighting me for the chair.  :)

Multiplayer stuff like this....   damn.  Well, at least I made good plans of mine, so I can build another later.

When this was released in the build, let's host a Daytona USA 2 PE New Joke City (Expert) tournament with 20 laps. It's gonna be much more epic!!   :applaud:

I think 16 players and 500 lap endurance with handicap turned off

now that would be EPIC!

Urgs... Tag Team Racing - Like 20 Laps per Player than change "on the fly".
500 Laps... Yikes!

Yup, at least it worked with 2 people over broadband.
Haven't tried larger setups though :)

well in daytona 2 during endurance you have tyre wear and also fuel gauge.
So you need to pit after about 33-34 laps (on beginner)

I did a single player race of it a few weeks ago...took me 3 hours 2 mins  :applaud: (I came 11th out of 40)

Yeah don't get it twisted....being able to play Daytona 2 or Scud Race online with minimal lag in Supermodel would be a GAME CHANGER!!!!!!! Seriously that would be the THE greatest thing EVER in videogame history! All of us getting together and racing each other in Supermodel everyday would never ever get old or boring.

It's just that it's gonna take a few months to a year or so before a scenario like this sees the light of day. So patience is indeed a virtue.

It'll be interesting to see which comes to fruition first....online play in Supermodel or the release of 90's Arcade Racer :)

I'm wondering if 90's arcade is going to be locked down or not, because I could mod the crap out of that.

I've always wanted to do a "celebrity cannonball run" game with all the notable cinema and tv cars in a race across the country.

General Lee
Boss Hog Caddie
Rosco Police Cruiser
Munster Mobile
Casket Racer (also from the Munsters)
Beverly Hillibillies Car
Robocop Crusier
Optimus Prime
National Lampoon's Wagon
Merth Mobile (Wayne's World)
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
K.A.R.R.  (Kitt's evil, cooler, twin)
Supernatural Impala

There are a LOT.

I wish a knew a team of game developers so I could get this off the ground.  About all I would feel comfortable doing would be general direction/game concept design.

I would do it sort of like twisted Metal, where each car has a special offensive and defensive stat as well as a rechargeable special move.  But in true Cannonball fashion, most of the specials would be guns and such, but rather shenanigan's.  Like for the General Lee, the Duke Boys might get out and change all the road signs, the Lampoon Wagon would start falling apart, littering the road with obstacles, ect....

I'd like to do a true race across the country as well.  Many games have attempted this, but they are always too shallow.  I'd like to see one course per State of about 1-2 minutes in length which would make for a massive 1 1/2 hour race if you decide to go through every state, but could be as short as 10 min if you take the direct route.  Racer's ahead of the pack can use their specials to block off routes, making those behind them take the long way around.  Some specials would allow for short cuts, which would help those who are behind catch up.  The game would use highway exits, similar to how Outrun does it to keep the stages dynamically loading.

And of course any sequel would take place in Europe.  ;)

It's one of those deals were legality would be an issue, but if the official game used generic cars  and the game engine had an open-source scripting system it wouldn't matter.

If I had any idea where to begin I'd be all over it.  But how the heck do you hire other people to make a game for you and keep some semblance of control over the project?  Especially considering I'm in WV and most of your programmers are in San Fran and other areas along the west coast.

Licencing would be a nightmare  :-\

Licensing wouldn't be an issue, like I said, you just wouldn't add any licensed cars to the official build and include the ability to add custom cars.

Plus there are ways around that... the General Lee becomes the "Colonel Waite" ect... ;)

While we're off topic, I should have put together a fake Desert Bus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penn_%26_Teller's_Smoke_and_Mirrors#Desert_Bus) dedicated cab build thread for April Fools.  :banghead:
A few days late and many dollars short.

I thought about releasing a fake version of mamehooker where every function downloaded a rick-roll but it seemed too cruel.

Bumping this post.

There might still be some hope for Supermodel network. For the last week there was a post on forums looking into emulating the network board and some of the talented people chipping in

Nik has posted on the post today! He is going to try find his old hard drive and upload the code which still needs some work but would be massive step in the right direction

Wow, that's awesome news! I honestly thought he'd died or something the way he just vanished from the Supermodel forum and no-one could reach him. Glad he's alive and well. That's doubly awesome that Supermodel networking might be back on the cards after all this time  :applaud:

Nik's post over at the Supermodel forum can be found here (http://www.supermodel3.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1430&p=13567#p13561).

Not really. SailorSat has brought a model 3 comm board but hasn't played around with it yet. Nik has not returned since his post and AFAIK no one has continued any stuff on this

Well bit of progress has been made lately. Spindizzi has been working on network board trying to understand it and Ian has helped with network code. They have some working network happening!

Now before you get too excited it's just a test build at the moment and only 3 games work to get ingame, plus you have to use -nothreads oprion which isn't great but Dirt Devils,Harley Davidson and Ski Champ all connect up and get in game.

I tested this on a single pc aswell as across different pcs

No, Scud race and daytona 2 don't work yet.
