Normally I use my minivan to pick up games.
A mission from God deserves a proper holy vessel.

I recruited my buddy and we set forth to rescue a cab from the clutches of MultiMAME hell.

It is in relatively good shape.
It was a pretty violent assault.
I told the dude he could keep the LCD and the PC.
I have wanted this cab since I played it in my local arcade when it originally came out.
-
Looks like you'll have fun restoring that Star Trek (https://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=9770) cab to it's former glory.
Scott
-
I used to play one of those at the Santa Monica pier. 20 years later, that same cabinet showed up on ebay and I still kick myself for not buying it. I think it went around $1,500-$2,000 and would have been a stupid but very nostalgic purchase.
-
Super happy for you, bro! Would love one myself, but since that ain’t ever gonna happen, I’ll live vicariously through you!

I already own a working upright Star Trek that is an Asteroids conversion.
This was a no brainer.
I am going to take my time with this. It is an exception to my normal preference with games that look a little worn.
I want this to look like it just left the San Francisco Fleet Yards.
-
Nicely done :applaud: :applaud:
-
OMG you suck...Oh Did Jenn say that out loud?...I Ment to say AWESOME!!! (dance, dance). :drool
-
I am not going to lie. This thing brings out a lot of little kid feelings in me.
-
Are you going to put a 60 in 1 in it? It'd be badass to play Galaga in that chair.
-
I had him remove that stuff when I was negotiating the price.
He had a PC and an LCD in it. He was trying to sell it as a multigame for 1500 bucks.
There was a joystick in place of the spinner and the buttons were replaced with light up casino buttons.
He was relatively careful about it. The cab is in pretty good shape.

This is going to be a glorious restoration! Can’t wait to see how it turns out.

FTFY.
I am not going to lie. This thing brings out a lot of little kid feelings in me.
All joking aside its awesome that certain games revive feelings of nostalgia. Its never been one certain game for me. Just being in an arcade does it for me.
-
---fudgesicle--- yeah! Been waiting for this post. The envy meter is showing an 11.

For anyone going to Zapcon this year, you can play this at the Starfighters arcade. Usually the folks who arrive on Thursday will have an evening there. Great arcade!

That was already determined.

Man, I wish I were arriving on Thursday. I'll be flying in Friday afternoon.
Between a drink offer, and pbj taunting me with pictures of their working Lunar Lander, I think next year I should make an effort to come in on the Thursday...

It is an excellent arcade. I enjoyed playing their Star Trek between rounds of Lunar Lander.

Sign me up. I'll be there Thursday and I'm always ready to try new machines.

Hopefully that is the plan.
-
Sorry to burst your bubbles, but there’s currently no plans for StarFighters yet. I thought you all were hanging out at the Pi Beta Taco house those nights.

If we can get in Thursday night to Starfighters I like to move the grill, coolers and other treats to the picnic table just outside of Starfighter’s front door. Parking lot party, just like my high school days.

I'm really excited for this restoration!
The original ad reminds me of our local Dutch Ebay where companies are buying every cab to tear out everything and put in lcd's plus 60-in-1's for quick profit :'(
-
It is a crime against humanity.
-
Yeah, I’m glad you picked that up Mike! I know you’ll do right by her!

The particle board is really ---smurfy--- and all of the vinyl is gone. The particle board has been painted...more than once.
I think I am going to smooth it out the best I can and then laminate the particleboard. To save the original panels I will probably have to reinforce some of them.
The plastic pieces are in pretty rough shape. I was hoping to just use that Retrobrite stuff and shine it back up again, but that doesn't seem to be a viable option.
There are gouges and other damage. I have a friend who owns an auto body shop. I dropped the panels off with him to see what he says.
We might have to strip off the metallic gray paint, fill and fix the panels and then paint them.
-

-
I dont know what your friend is telling you, but stripping paint off plastic is a bad idea, Unless it is some cheap spray paint or something, even then a few wipes with reducer is the answer...That should be in a perfect world (and a blank check) be lightly sanded on damage areas, filled with glaze putty, sealed with a tinted sealer (to match topcoat) Scrubbed with a ultra fine grey scratch pad...And painted with a plastic/vinyl paint.
-
He didn't use those words, I did. I am not a painter. I trust he knows what he is doing. He is going to tell me before he does anything. I will show him your comments because I know that you know your stuff too.
-
You dont got to make him think you went and got a second opinion or anything, Good painters are odd people, that may take offense...Just dont want to watch something you may regret on your new game.
-
Meh, YOLO. Trust in your friend, don't be scared.
-
It never hurts to get more information. If I hurt his feelings he can drink away his sorrows at my party at the end of the month.
-
He grew up painting boats and cars. It is a family business. I am not worried.
-
Jennifer laughs at the trusting nature of temperamental painters, guys who breathe chemicals all day...*Fun story, I used to work with a guy that would pour a Budweiser down the carburetor on Fords while in the paintbooth...apparently it was for good luck.
-
I chatted a bit with Bperkins about particleboard restoration. He is more meticulous and experienced than I am.
I make cutting boards, work tables, signs, arcade cabs, and night lights.
He built a damn boat.
I am going to adopt some of his methods and materials for this restoration. If it turns out like ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, I blame him. >:D
It would really help if Arroyo would fly out here for a week and help out. Last time he was out here we got a ton of ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- done.
His enthusiasm is infectious. Even copious amounts of alcohol didn't dampen it.
His excuse will be that he has a wife and kids and a job and stuff...Some people just don't have their priorities straight. Then again he might just show up one day.

“Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you?”– Yoda
-
Yoda was worthless. He drove Anakin to the dark side by disrespecting him repeatedly.
Mister super powerful Jedi couldn't even see Palpatine pulling the strings right under his nose.
Yoda is the Batman of the Star Wars universe. He makes everything worse.

Just say the word bruh.
We could finish in one weekend if you get Bob to come out.
-
That would be a great weekend. I have always said that you are welcome anytime. We might have to kidnap Bob. Of course Chicago is much closer for him than Phoenix. ;)
My kids pretty much take care of themselves. My schedule is very flexible.
-
I've never had a repair/restoration party. Sounds like it would be super productive!
On multiple occasions I've invited friends over to help me assemble furniture. I swear, it's pretty depressing to find out that your buds are not handy at all. Even when it came to simple instruction-lead assembly...

This is getting interesting.

And you have just nailed the exact reason that I stalk this forum and forsake all others. Most people here can actually swing a hammer. Other forums it's a lot of folks that can crack open a wallet, pull out their credit card, order something, and then maybe bolt it on when it arrives. MAYBE. Despite these limitations, they are full of opinions and advice.
These people have turned me off RGP, RGVAC, KLOV, Pinside, etc.

Swing a hammer he says...It would be funny, however that little Bartop you made, Was pretty cool.

I would agree, there has been kind a building Renaissance here in the last few months. Sure as hell beats the CNC Flynn’s Arcade copies and Arcade1Up toy upgrades we saw in 2019.

Hammer .. such a crude tool :P

Blues Brothers reference got me, and holy crap your van looks cold.
Some people know not what they do when they are "upgrading" obviously.
If you might attack that yourself, I use a blend of aluzine epoxy and brown phenolic microballoons for repairs on plastic (and fiberglass, and wood, and metal, and- pretty much anything but myself) like those you refer to.
You can mix it thick as marshmallow so it doesn't drool and it still sticks to anything- even vertical (sometimes even upside down) surfaces because it winds up so light.
Surprisingly, it sands incredibly easily after it has cured for a bit and with a little glaze afterwards you can make it smooth as glass if you try.
Takes paint real nicely too.
The hardest thing about those jobs is getting paint to stick to the plastic all around the repair afterwards.
That's when I love to rely on people like Jennifer and your friends with the paint biz.
They have a magic primer (or technique of prep and/or application) that is a guarded secret.
What a cool cabinet.
Even with the mint worth of quarters I burned through I never got to play one of those in the wild.
Bobby

Minor update.
A lot of cosmetic work has been done.
The PCB stack is still giving us trouble.
Here are some pics. I will get more.
I didn't realize how neglectful I have been in updating this thread.

I figured you had taken a break and were working on some other things.
Captain's chair is lookin much better anyway!
Now that Kirk has actually been into space do you think it is worth more?
:)
-
I had to cut new boards for several parts of this cab.
The originals were either unsalvageable or missing altogether.
This is the panel for the front of the seat base.
Plywood laminated with white vertical laminate.

This bracket secures the canopy to the chair back.
It is pretty bent up.

It needs a little more hammer action and then time for a paint touchup.
-
I also tend to hit things until they are fixed. Seems to work half the time.
-
This is looking good. Keep going - I can't imagine taking a whole year to do one cabinet. >:D
-
Need more updates! This is one of my favorite cabs. Someday one will be mine. Oh yes, one will be mine...
-
Heh.
I have made progress.
I will get you some pics.

I have an entire drawer in my tool chest devoted to only hammers.
I might need more actually.

This is the bezel assembly. The cab I rescued did not have one at all.
This one is built from scratch using a real one as an example.
-
Bperkins01 has fixed the board stack and he is shipping it back to me. It should arrive just before Christmas.
Maybe I will be able to play Star Trek on Christmas day.
-
I just bought a Star Wars cab last week.
It played blind, but with some long distance phone and online help from my friends, it works 100 percent now.
I also recently picked up an Atari Assault cab. It plays fine, but the joysticks were in bad shape.
I have them fixed up to about 80 percent good right now. A work in progress.
When I get time I will post that stuff.
The problem is that I have to stop working to post here.
-
I see that grouchy!
Rough time of year for progress really.
Nice work of course.
Glad to see I'm not the only one around here having to make ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- up from whole cloth sometimes.
Stoked you have parts to work from.
And I get about 10 minutes a day to be productive typically- so all I have done lately is post (drivel.)
-
When I get time I will post that stuff.
The problem is that I have to stop working to post here.
Pfft... You probably are wasting a third of your day sleeping when you could be posting...
-
Tonight I will give a written update and pics.
The board stack is working.
The monitor is working.
The power supply needs work.
I have the game running with an ATX power supply replacement for diagnostic purposes.
Hopefully I can fix the power supply tonight.
-
MikeA ain't sleeping tonight..
-
The original power supply works great now.
The -5v output was a bit over -6v.
It turns out that is too far off.
We replaced the -5v regulator and that fixed it.
-
Closer.
What next?
-
Only cosmetic stuff is left.
Right now I can sit in the chair and play the game.
I am really ---smurfing--- happy about that.
-
