You could either get ones of the same value, or reuse the ones from the caanoo if they're not too tiny. One would have to be mounted sideways inside the yoke itself for the up/down movement. The other could be mounted to the cab and the yoke attached to the shaft of it. I'm not sure how I'd go about doing this on such a small scale.
The little box that contains the pots contains springs that keep the pots centered.
Not having them spring loaded and returning to center could screw up calibration.
Most usb gamepads use 10k pots, recognize 5k as center, and don't require calibration.
Like I said, I've never messed with a Caanoo.
I've thought about how I'd design a cheap (sub $20) star wars joke just for fun.
I kept coming back to having a hoop around the bottom that links both grips.
That way the potentiometer could sit in the middle (attached to one side) and both grips would still move together.
Otherwise you'd need to have the grips linked by a shaft with a gear on it that would turn the pot.
but caanoo can be programmed to boot directly to the game also.
Not to dash any dreams here...
#!/bin/sh
cd /mnt/sd/mame4all_2.5
exec ./mame.gpe
Just remember the words of Red Leader: 'Almost there................'
"Autorun"
#!/bin/sh
cd /mnt/sd/mame4all_2.5
exec ./mame starwars
Just remember the words of Red Leader: 'Almost there................'
I prefer the words of Darth Vader: "I find your lack of faith disturbing"
Caanoo now boots to Star Wars directly. Should also work identically on Wiz or even GP2X. When you exit game Caanoo backs to the native rom select menu using whatever skin you have installed
This requires GMENU2X and MAME4All 2.5 please note that 2.6 will not work as the command line capability has been removed in 2.6 for some retarded reason.
This actually shouldn't require GMENU2X since all you are using is the autorun file that comes with it but rather than build your own I find it easier just to download and modify. So modify the autorun code to look like this:Code: [Select]"Autorun"
#!/bin/sh
cd /mnt/sd/mame4all_2.5
exec ./mame starwars
That's it. Too easy.
Oh, and make sure you download Notepad++ or some other Unix code editor because regular notepad will add unreadable line endings to your code making it worthless in the Caanoo.
And now I'll start ripping apart, documenting, measuring, resizing art and all that. Should I just rename this thread and request a move or start a proper Project Announce thread?
Why don't I use two 10K Ohm wheel pots make the yoke? Here's an example from Radio Shack (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3064080#). If I make small metal brackets to hold each pot up the yoke "axles" then all I need to do is find a gear for each axle and I should get nice smooth control on a micro scale.
Does this sound feasible? Can these wheel pots be used in this manner? Any body got a lead on where I can get small plastic gears to try rigging this up? I think this will be easier than trying to build directly into 10K post pots but I may still have to do that.
First time checking this thread out... Jesus Martha Tits!
Well I know of one guy that would be able to play this easier than I...

Looking good! The side profile shot looks really good. Gonna be really interesting to see how the yoke looks and plays.
Regarding the speaker panel, is that just a piece of sheet metal with the holes in it you can buy from a DIY store? On mine I was concerned that the holes may look too big for the cabinet size (and yours is way smaller) so in the end I used a solder board. One of those little boards you put electronic components in. I just turned it backwards and sprayed it.
Yours looks pretty neat as it is, I'm not saying you should change it. I only mention this as an idea in case you wanted smaller holes.
Just love this!.
Whats going to be next?, micro battlezone?.
Keep it up.
Whats next? good question.
The coin door looks fine.... I bet it took ages to make! I wasn't too sure how exactly you were going to make the coin door but of course now we can all see. What are the dimensions of the door? It looks really small on your fingers there. If it really is as small as I think it might be then you can ignore my suggestion below as it might not be practical.....
I do have an idea to make the same coin door if I was gonna do the same thing. I'd take some 2mm aluminium sheet and drill holes where the curved indents are. Then I'd cut out the straight parts and file smooth. Time consuming yeah. Then stick that when it's finished onto a flat piece of 1mm perspex. Spray black and then add the fake hinges.
It's just an idea I thought of. I've tried carving stuff before and to be honest I'm really bad at it. I like to put smaller pieces together to make up a larger piece.
Gotta say that artwork looks really good. Especially the sideart! :applaud:
This is gonna be one unique little cab when it's done. :D

Thats more or less how I created my last batch of mini coin doors. Basically I got a 1 mm thick sheet of flat smooth plastic and cut the pattern out of it. Then added the other bits on top. You get a very smooth sharp finish without the woodgrain or rough crooked edges you get from using wood. Once I was happy with it I then made a mould using silicone moulding material.
Technically you can also use the moulding clay to make the coin door mould , but you need to have an artists touch for that.
You need a milling machine. I'm sure you could make some really kick ass mini coin doors on it.
What about an engraver for the straight edges, can you run use one with a ruler?.
Or you can get those mini dremel routers, I have not used either personally but keep lusting after the dremel.
Looking excellent by the way.
Man! That cab looks sweet! :applaud: :applaud:
I would have layered 2 sheets is styrene to make the coin door
Styrene is nice you can cut it with an xacto knife then sand it
Looks pretty sweet they way you did it though
What kind of buttons did you use there?
Amazing work dude! :applaud:
A scale stormtrooper figure standing next to that would look sweet!
Not that you have a thing for stormtroopers or anything... ;D
Brother don't I know it. I would be milling all my own mini yoke pieces as well, and the shroud and... well the whole thing would be aluminum.

You say that as though it's a bad thing. Aluminum anodizes to a nice black so well...
And how much fun is it to machine aluminum?
Jim, you're the >:D. If I come home with a $500 mill my wife will kill me and no you can't have my mill if I'm dead.
F&$#!!!! Yeah that's awesome!!!!!!!
Holy crap you did extend the screen!! Good deal too. Thanks for the input on how to.
I've got one of these just laying around waiting for me to make some chips.
Wanna make a 1:6 spinner top for me? I've got a TRON build I'm brewing.
Wanna make a 1:6 spinner top for me? I've got a TRON build I'm brewing.
Hey, that's lathe work. Got a drawing?
needs more duct tape.
are you testing the pots as you're assembling this? It'd really suck to get it all together and then find a bad pot.
I'd mill the handles out of aluminum and have a recess in them for the switch. It'd still be pretty tricky to do though. Perhaps just using a drill and some files might work.
You should mass produce those and sell them. miniram-controls......something like that
Man, that is nucking futs!
Amazing work dude! :applaud:Amazing build, you do great work at whatever scale you work in. Speaking of scale figures, one of these should work.

Can you let me know the price and do you ship to Australia ????
This thing is beyond :censored: awesome, Fantastic build
:applaud: :notworthy:
This is the kind of project that makes someone like me who had no interest in cabinets or builds or anything just a few weeks ago into someone already making assembly lists and sketches throughout the day to begin tackling my own first (far more modest, of course) project. Truly a showroom piece for inspiration. I joined this forum just to follow this build! The micro yoke looks so amazing in place, too. Congratulations and thanks so much for taking the extra time to chronicle your process.
This is so far beyond what I'm capable of its sick.
Man, that is nucking futs!
Thats nice... but one thing you should know is that all the arcade and even gaming sticks use some form of gearing. Or, they have a very large throw range. As such, the X & Y values might not be high enough to even calibrate your yoke properly. Ive seen this problem on other similar designs, that didnt use gearing.
Best of luck.
Did that trigger switch really come from radio shack?
Wow this is crazy. Nice work
Don't think I'll be joining you on this size cabinet.
Had enough fun cramming everything into the bartop. :D
Scaled up, that's like using 1/0 gage wire in a full size cab. >:D I demand authenticity!
You know, it probably would have been easier to build a shrink ray while waiting for your order from Ram Controls and then just proceed with the shrinking.
wow! a bottle of wine as big as an arcade cabinet! HUGE!
Great build, loved the video, now I'm going to have to rethink the video for my build when it is finally complete, I was planning on doing the exact same beginning and end. :badmood: ;) ;D.
Comments in no particular order:
"micro contians" in the crawl text sounds suspiciously similar to midi chlorians - you better watch that. . .
The music thing's no biggie, they don't seem to take offense but you'll possibly pick up more annoying advertising overlays.
On the full size SW- You've got to go big. I know you can nail an authentic looking stock build with no trouble. I need to see the full custom setup - upgraded artwork, menu with all the SW games, including getting that one dude to finish his Revenge vector game, force feedback massage yoke --the full monty. After this that will be a walk in the park.
And last, your vid has removed all doubt - this is the minimum playable size. In fact, It obviously it plays better than Switchcade with the flight stick installed. Dibs on any spare yoke parts after your FS build.
Really good work, Bro.
Very nice! :applaud:
Now if you could just shrink your hands a little... :)

I'm as impressed with the speed at which it was completed as much as the cab.

"Lucrative Offers."
Please elaborate! Jobs? "Build me one for $$?" Marriage offers? :)
I just exceeded my 10g monthly download limit at photobucket, had to go upgrade to a pro account to keep from being blacked out. :dizzy:
Gotta admit, i'm a tad jelly, but that machine is pretty epic! :applaud: Congrats! Did you really get a marriage offer? :laugh2:
Switch the pictures over to the pic thread stickied at the top of the projects forum here.
We don't want them disappearing if the stormtroopers come for you.
I had 4 or 5 projects worth of pics on photobucket and slowly transferred them here during downtime at work. >:D
It was a chore, but they're much safer now. Nothing worse than an awesome project thread with dead pic links.
Gotta admit, i'm a tad jelly, but that machine is pretty epic! :applaud: Congrats! Did you really get a marriage offer? :laugh2:
Yeah but no telling how serious those things are... he wasn't my type anyway :laugh2:

Shaner,
Extendedplayarcade, I updated your link in my tracker and will clean up the others and add to the first post. Thanks for the kind words tho. I appreciate it.
Legal counsel has instructed me not to sell the build nor to sell duplicate builds at this time due to active trademark and copyright issues but has assuaged my concerns of litigious action against my person as a result of this build and the video. As always, anybody willing to build their own is more than welcome. More to follow.
Wow. Well that was a lot of fun. ;D
Thanks again to all of youse that help drum this thing up. :applaud: :applaud:
This is a one off art/craft project. No one will bother you for that. :afro:You're right, I just don't want to accidentally cross that line from one off fan art into some independent commissions which will turn into a very modest page on Etsy or some ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- that finally gets me zapped by a property owner that wants his piece of the action.
In other news my views swelled to over 30K combined on youtube and it's getting some late mention in some art and design circles. I updated the blog list in the first post. I've been told that it's not viral until I clear a half mil hits and I don't think I'm in any danger of that ;D

Thanks everybody, I know a lot of you are cross posting and helping spread this around. It is much appreciated.
I'm gonna drop into Klov and tell them thanks as well. Any positive reaction out of the serpents den is worth a response ;D
I've had a few lucrative offers come in already, I contacted a lawyer to start looking at the issue and make sure I don't slam my proverbial weenie in the screen door. It would be a shame to actually get a cease and desist from lucasarts, and atari, and fax and...
So I see you haven't done much with that Caanoo I sold you, so how about I buy it back? You don't even need to take it out of that strange case you have, I'll take it as is. Same price as before?:laugh2:
OK, I had to try. :dunno
