The game for round #15 is Frogger  (frogger.zip). Chosen by last round's winner, CrazyKongFan.

Rules:

- You can only use frogger.zip, 5 man settings, no cheats (5 man chosen to coincide with Twin Galaxies settings)

- Single Credit only.

- Use any mame version or variant you wish.

- Last day is Monday, April 6th (11:59:59pm Eastern Daylight Time).

- High score wins (if tied, a tie-breaker game will be chosen at random).

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are optional, but encouraged!

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the screen if playing on a real machine.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition amongst forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

GOOD LUCK!

Not that I have a chance at this one either, but now I have to update from .129u3 because Frogger doesn't work in this version but was fixed in u4.  Just nervous about changing when everything else is working so well.

I'm not great at this, but I'll probably give it a shot at some point.

Are you offering a prize to the winner?

Hadn't thought about it (even though i just won something ;) ) I don't really have anything worth donating, esp. related to Frogger.
Title: Re: Game Competition #15: Frogger
Post by: Ginsu Victim on March 22, 2009, 10:38:22 am
It doesn't have to be related to the game in the contest. It doesn't even need to have any great value. Heck, you don't have to offer one at all, but it's a trend we're trying to keep going.

And, yes, you won a very nice prize. :)

Is it just me or does every game in these competitions have to cheat?  I'm going to post my score now since it'll be the only time I have a lead.  Gonna keep trying though.  This is fun.  Except for the cheating traffic and otters.

I was wondering the same thing.  I guess I need to turn off the overlays, that's the way the snapshot is unaltered.   :dunno

How is the game cheating you? I do know the game does have a few bugs, although some of them occur more in the arcade version when you have a weak power supply, so that shouldn't be an issue in MAME. You just have to be careful in certain situations, esp. when a speed change happens (when the traffic/logs/turtles speed up or slow down). I think just about every game has frustrating aspects...be glad I didn't go with my first choice, Galaga 3/Gaplus...that game gets hard in a hurry ;D

Not really cheating, I just get frustrated when I make mistakes.  Just feeling the need to put the blame on the game.

I hear ya...this one definitely is one not to rush through, esp when you get to the 5th level type screens. There are a couple of bugs to watch out for (besides the fly ;D ) On the top row turtles, if you're hanging off the left side and an otter comes out from the right, he'll get you. Not sure if every ROM does this, but I've had it happen on the machine at Funspot a couple of times. Another one is going into your home from the tip of the tail of an alligator. You'll make it ok, but as soon your next frog starts at the bottom, you die.

I like Gaplus. :) Another time maybe?

With the Frogger screenshot, I had to shrink the vertical resolution from 768 down to 256.  I'm not sure why it comes out stretched like that.

It gets harder and harder until round 5 or so, then it suddenly gets easy again.  Weird.

Is it just me or does every game in these competitions have to cheat?
If you mean the dodgy collision detection, I hear ya.

One time I was playing frogger, and for no good reason the game started me out half a space off. It guaranteed I would lose that life. It was really weird. I agree it is a buggy game.

Mm, in cases like that, I just grab the newer version and put on that rom in there. Delete after, probly.

Yeah, Gaplus. Maybe next time.

I saw the half space Frog tonight. I made it through traffic just to have it commit suicide in the logs in what otherwise should have been a good move. I'll hit F12 if I see it again.

I had a good one at Funspot, which I wish I'd gotten a photo of. When I started the game, it had flipped the screen upside down and left-to-right. So up was down, down was up, but left and right were correct. Managed to make it thru the first level and died on the 2nd. When the game ended, it went back normal. It may have been due to a static shock though, as alot of games were having issues due to that (at one point, their Donkey Kong 2 was upside down, but still playing). Most of them, if anything happend, would either just lock up or reset from a static shock.

Ugh, after a few games, I couldn't crack 16k last night.  But, I was improving gradually...probably too gradually to catch the good score already posted...   :'(

I found that almost all of my deaths were due to impatience.  I "fell" off the edge of the screen on a log only once.  Time ran out just once.  Rushing around cars was my main mode of suicide.  Interestingly, when I played this as a kid, I was often vexed by the patterns & painted into a corner & trapped & overwhelmed.  I guess my brain can process patterns a lot better now...but I was rushing too much, trying to get the bigger bonuses to beat you guys...

I saw a different bug almost every game.  The pink lady frog wouldn't be out.  I'd be on the first set of logs, where she likes to hang out, and then *poof!* she'd appear on top of my frog & make the mating noise, but she'd be red instead of pink.  I guess she's sometimes invisible & when you catch her in her invisible state, shes red on top of you instead of pink on top of you.  Kooky.

I'll try a bit more, but I've got a ways to go...

You can do it!  I was stuck around the same scores for a while.  There's a stage, I think it's the fifth one, where there's four fast racecars just below the trucks.  That one's hard, but after that it goes back to being easy again.  So if you can crack that level, you'll easily pick up another 10k.

If you don't take too long each time you land a frog on his home pad, you should end up averaging about 4K per level. And if anyone can get that far (I can't, but I know a few people who can), it takes about 1/2 an hour to roll the score at 100K.

You shouldn't have encouraged me, Dr. Frag, I'm giving you a run for your money!  Yup, stage 5 has 5 fast race cars in a row--you need to have a clear shot above them when you dart through the small gap.

I was still stuck at stage 5 for a while.  But then I got 2 good games in, where I passed stage 5.  Had 2 dumb deaths on my last game--could've done a little better, darn it!   :badmood:

28,600 so far...let's see how I do tomorrow...

-Jason

PS--I *swear* had multiple cheap-o deaths while jumping from a turtle to the top log, right in the middle of a log, & I died...bogus!  Still had a few freebie invisible/red female frogs, but not as many this time around.

Actually, Dr Frag is right, it's 4 :) (1st and 3rd row have 5 cars though)
OK, since you guys are getting close, here's my first entry, 42740. I've included the INP, done with wolfmame 106...watch the 10th board, very frustrating. Had 1 spot left, and everytime I got close, an alligator popped out in it. Died once running out of time, then finally made it after a 3rd time in a row with the alligator popping out. Oh, if I end up winning this one, since I won last time, to be fair, 2nd place can pick the game. ;D

Title: Re: Game Competition #15: Frogger
Post by: CrazyKongFan on March 31, 2009, 01:28:17 pm
Yeah, I changed it from the default to 5 man, since that's how TG tracks it. I'm not sure what a real machine defaults to. Of the machines I've played in the last year or so, 4 were at 5 man (one at Funspot, one local to me, 2 in PA, but all except the local one were specifically set to TG setting), one at 7 (another one local to me), and one at 3. I figured if anyone is a TG member and they got a decent score, they could submit it (of course, you have to use Wolfmame 106 and record the INP, but they'd probably already know that ;D ).

I hadn't notice, either. I've always done three on that game, I think. Not that I've every been very good at it, but wasn't interested enough in it to play it often enough to either be good enough with three, or use five or six (DK) to try to get better. Man, six more days.

Wow, no love for this game huh? I figured it might be a popular one, given it's a classic, and I'm sure everyone's played it (and the Seinfeld episode on it)...It's one of my favorites.

It's a remembered game, and certainly original, still actually. But it's just not a great game in a mainstream sense. Them's my thoughts at least.

That's my final answer.

I'll never again have a game that good, I predict.  Got to level 10.  Don't think I can ever get past 10...I was lucky enough to get past 5...

I give up.

Me too.  I keep thinking I'll have one more shot, but it always ends with "but I was a good 5 pixels clear of that truck!" or "how could I be dead? I was standing safely on the end of that log for a good 1/2 second!"

And then I rage quit.
Title: Re: Game Competition #15: Frogger

My unfavoritest & most common of deaths once I started getting "good" was jumping onto a log & dying.  Granted, it was kinda sorta towards the end of a log, but still, I thought I was on it!  Once time, my skull & crossbones animation even moved along with the log, so my frog had succeeded in making it onto the log & dying at the same time.

Boo.   :hissy:

Oh my!  You love me!  You *really* love me!!!  Where's the smiley who's smiling but crying & holding an Oscar???

Let me post my official 33,880 score screenshot, to be all official & stuff (even though my older screenshot still counts for 2nd).

Anyway, somebody please give me a little guidance here.  I now pick a game, say the contest ends on 4/20 at midnight, copy & paste the top part of this post, & go to town?

I have a game in mind already, but I want to test & browse tonight--is posting tonight OK?

Thanks!
