Title: Pixelhugger's Arcade of Whoopass control panel finished.
Post by: Pixelhugger on December 20, 2004, 03:05:20 pm
This is a control panel I just finished for a friend's autistic son as a Christmas present. He loves Pac Man and Metal Slug and has no idea such a thing as Mame exists.... Should be a great surprise.

You'll notice some unfortunate cracking where my forstner bit blew out at the bottom of the lexan. Not sure why that happened. Didn't do it on my previous panel but then I used a drill press on that one. This was hand held.

I am blown away by the quality of the printing job mamemarquees did. Absolutely stunning color and sharpness.

The only unique things about construction were

1) the use of a lexan panel set in a dado for the bottom of the CP box, so when you look at it upside down it becomes a sort of shadow box allowing the kid and his friends see how the controls work...

Bloody EXCELLENT quality as usual, Pix...but then I'd expect no less from you mate ;).  He should be VERY happy indeed.

Superb!

Can we see a pic of the bottom?

What does the name under 'Player 2' say?

Awesome job!!

Thanks for the kind words! Player 2 is named VICTIM (for head to head games).

Here is a pic of the exposed soft underbelly of the beast. It looks much cooler than this now that the wiring and all the switches are in. I'll replace this pic with an updated one tonight.

Can't wait to see it..  wires and all...

After helping my brother wire a 4-player panel this weekend, I know I'd love to have some way (like this) of showing off all of the hard work..  Of course, our wiring job would need to be cleaned up a bunch, but...  :)

Wish you could bottle up some of that artistic talent and send it my way  :)

Very cool!  :)

IKWYM...  my previous panel was a complete rat's nest of wires. This one took much longer to wire but the result was worth it. I just wish I could have found blue wire.

Soooomebody doesn't like to solder  ::) Since my soldering skills result in fillets like lead candycorns I thought it'd be better to use quick disconnects.

I just finished wiring my Omega Mame CP and debated about posting pics as the wiring is not as pretty as I would like.

WOW!! Stunning.  I think we've all come to expect great graphics/artwork from you, but the wiring job is top notch too.  Neat idea with the plexi on the bottom to "show off" the insides.  I think your friend's son is going to be a very happy camper!  Great job!

That must be the neatest wiring job EVER.  Unreal.  Good work!

And it goes without saying that the graphics own also.

BTW: That little clip that is holding the PS/2 cable in the second pic.  Did you make that or did you purchase?  Next time around I need to have some cable-mgmt clips etc laying around.  I really could have used 'em.
It looks like one of those double-armed cable hold downs.  You should be able to find something close to it in the electrical department of your local big box Home Improvement store.  They are usually sold in packs of ~15-100, but once you have a use for 1, you can usually find a use for the rest  ;)
