Title: Asteroids cocktail version
Post by: JoyMonkey on October 24, 2004, 10:07:30 pm
I know there were cocktail Asteroids machines out there, but I can't find a version of Asteroids in Mame that allows a cocktail mode.

Is there a version out there that uses different controls for Player1 and Player2, and flips the screen for each player?

Asteroids boards know if they are in a cocktail or upright cabinet because of a pin that is grounded on the cocktail harness but not on the upright.

Unfortunately this does not seem to be in Mame.  >:(

That's unfortunate. Maybe they should add a DipSwitch that could act as the harness pin. Or maybe an extra 'cocktail' clone set. Maybe I should mention this on the Mame forum?

Mention this on the mame testers forum at mameworld.

Funny thing is that I saw a mamed Asteroids cocktail at auction once, it only had vector games on the menu.

Looks like Asteroids etc. will finally be getting a real 'fake' cocktail mode!

13 year necro-bump.   >:D

When the subject of Asteroids screen flipping for cocktail cabs came up last month, I asked Haze if it would be possible to at least add the information about the jumper from J20 pin 7 to pin 19 (the "ground wire" paigeoliver mentions above) in the Cocktail cab harness and the associated screen flipping circuits (Q15, Q16, and Q17) in the "2b" schematic to the MAME driver info.
(opt2not made it easy to find the info thanks to the outstanding documentation in his Rock on! Asteroids Cocktail Restoration (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,107874.0.html) thread  :notworthy:)

Haze replied he wasn't familiar with the asteroids driver, but relayed the request to the other MAME devs.

Just got word from Haze that ajrhacker submitted a pull request here (https://github.com/mamedev/mame/commit/7a0645cfdd01fa136353117a78d3188ed253e84c#diff-f07e9f2d1d151b44aadfeb15cc29473d) for player 2 screen flipping on Asteroids and Asteroids Deluxe.

Once the pull request is accepted, it will be implemented as a "machine config" option in the next MAME release.   :w00t
