Title: 18 wheeler shifter
Post by: BadMouth on April 22, 2013, 09:57:39 am
I have enough unfinished projects, but was browsing ebay this morning and came across an 18 wheeler shifter.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/18-wheeler-shifter-and-buttons-and-harness-for-shifter-and-buttons-/330911226177?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4d0bd89941 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/18-wheeler-shifter-and-buttons-and-harness-for-shifter-and-buttons-/330911226177?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4d0bd89941)
Interesting shifter that I haven't seen before.....
Looks like it would be easily moddable into a 6 speed by making a new bottom plate.
(or could serve as inspiration for a homemade design)

It's not clear what holds it in gear.  Magnet maybe?

I'm struggling to see how an 18 wheeler game would be fun?

Is a delivery style game like crazy taxi. There are rivals and stuff to add to the excitement a bit.

There was a guy in the main forum earlier this year who was building a hardcore bus simulator.
Apparently there are bus simulator "games" where you have to drive the route, pick up people, give change......

Well there's this hardcore farm equipment simulator as well.  It's not popular here at all, but I was thinking it was amazingly popular in Korea or somewhere like that.

I'll tell ya, driving a combine.... nothing like it.   :lame:

I could see somebody doing something with an 18 wheeler though.  It'd have to be something fun and out there, like a Smokey and the Bandit arcade game though.

WTF? Badmouth that just looks like a regular old 4-spd Happ shifter. This guy should be advertising it as a 4-way Happ shifter not an 18 wheeler shifter. Unless I'm wrong and this is in fact a 6 speed shifter? Either way it's Happ not Sega.

It only has 3 gears, but the way the plate on the bottom bolts on would make it super easy to modify into anything you want.
$10 shifter+$10 shipping+$10 worth of parts(IMO) = cheap 6 speed.

EDIT: ok, after checking out the exploded diagram of the Happ, yeah it's a happ with a custom bottom plate.

i've played the 18 wheeler game for the dreamcast,
it's a fun change from the other types of racing games:
-------
18 wheeler "American pro trucker" - Dreamcast. Oldschool game. From start to finish. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZWaTp9T_Xo#ws)

Wait wait wait.. Have you played it?  I play it, both my kids and ppl I work with play it. It has a huge modding community.

I own the full game and love it. The shifter is a 3 position shifter, hi, low and reverse. Its not really usefull for anything else at all. I do actually need one as a post has broken on mine internally!
