Title: So, You want to build a Classic Nintendo Cab?
Post by: ChanceKJ on March 22, 2015, 03:56:07 pm
Plans:
You have three main options here:
-Gaetan: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,144300.0.html
-bdn103's Site: ClassicArcadeCabinets.com (https://www.classicarcadecabinets.com/)
-Jackobud: http://jakobud.com/plan-list.php

There are conflicting reports about the accuracy of the Jackobud plans, however they are a quick resource and the older way we used to build these arcades. The newer Gaetan plans were a joint Canadian/French project done by the two of us to produce an accurate set of plans accompanied by images. They include a 1:1 template for the side panels that you can take to your nearest Staples, (or large format printer) and create an accurate cutting template to paste directly onto your wood. The plans were modelled off of my own personal Japanese plywood DK cab.

bdn103's ClassicArcadeCabinets.com has taken the Gaetan plans and modified them for use on a CnC. This is really cool and will save you a lot of woodworking if you have access to a CnC and can use the vCarve drawing set!

WouicheLorraine's  Nintendo coin door dimension/blueprint (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,164139.msg1729296.html)

A few key dimensions:
-Marquee Plexi: 568mm Wide x 148.5mm High x 2mm Thick (plus the thickness of the artwork)
-Bezel Plexi: 568mm Wide x 512.5mm High x 4mm Thick (including artwork, it's screen printed on to the plexi)

Parts
Possibly one of the best resources for parts is MikesArcade. He has a selection of both reproduction and original OEM parts for the standard nintendo cabinet. There are other vendors like Twisted Quarter, Chomping Quarters, and T-Moulding.com. Great reproduction art can be found at both This Old Game and Game on Graphix. Another couple resources are the Killer List Of Video Games for sale section (KLOV), and eBay (although eBay can be quite pricy). This list is always going to be incomplete, It's best you take your time and really do your homework on what parts you really need and what ones you can get a good deal on from people parting out old machines. Also, if money isn't an object, also check out the Boulder Arcade Factory, they make reproduction Nintendo cabinets.

Paint and Laminate
Original nintendo cabs have a special laminated finish to them and aren't just painted wood. However some builders have taken the time to match paint colours. Please note: there are colour variances between the U.S. made blue particle board cabs and the Japanese made plywood cabs. As well as colours fading over time. it's suggested that if you are using one of the paints below to touch up a cabinet that you test first to find compatibility, or simply choose one close and repaint all the painted surfaces.

Nice work Chance!

You should add Buckethead's restore to the mix.  I didn't see any Red Radarscope converted DK's in your example list.  His is gorgeous!  http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,79183.msg826802.html#msg826802l (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,79183.msg826802.html#msg826802l)

Also, Paint codes are useful too:  http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Paint_color_codes (http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Paint_color_codes)

This is awesome, sir. I'm working to assemble an "external measurement perfect" replica for the market, and the work you've done here is HUGE. Thanks so much.

This concerns me... If one was to do that, wouldn't getting a cab disassembling it and taking EXACT measurements and scans rather than take for granted something is correct, Before pumping out kits to unsuspecting customers that think there getting some high level awesome reproduction just because it has a CNS label attached to it?

What you say makes sense. I'm actually working on verifying this exact information, from more than a single source. It's definitely a concern, and I wouldn't want to put out a promise I couldn't deliver on.

Thanks a lot, I appreciate it. :)  I owe a lot of thanks to many of the projects youve already listed above....as I did a lot of research myself before I built my cabs.

Being a learning experience...there are definitely a few things I would have done differently...and Im applying that to the new Nintendo builds that I currently am working on right now.  Now that Im registered here, Ill definitely get a build thread going soon.

Awesome list by the way!

Being a learning experience...there are definitely a few things I would have done differently...and Im applying that to the new Nintendo builds that I currently am working on right now.  Now that Im registered here, Ill definitely get a build thread going soon.

Awesome list by the way!
Wyo's definitely a homeboy. He hooked me up with my Nintendo coin door.

Haha, yeah!  That door was gonna be used for a red DK scratch build...but I ended up lucking into an original.  Funny thing is, I recently sold it...so I decided Im going to build a 5 slot red DK (Thankfully, I made a stencil of the 5 slot before I sold it) with a 25" CRT this summer because I miss it so much! Fortunately, I picked up WAY to may of Takemans repro doors this last run...so now I have to many doors that need cabs.  haha.  So Ive got plans to get busy this summer with multiple Nintendo builds!  They really are the best looking cab out there.....and now so hard to find!!

Added dimensions for the bezel and marquee plexi. These came from an original DK3 bezel, and the marquee from a VS. Super Mario Bros. Measurements were done in metric, however i have reason to believe the parts were cut using Imperial.

My favorite Nintendo cab is Punch-Out!!/ Dual screen PlayChoice 10. I couldn't find any plans, plus I'm a building dummy (meaning I don't know how to cut wood and stuff), so I ended up buying an empty cab. But if you can add plans for one, I'm sureit would be helpful. Also Nintendo Super System.

Rather than start another thread, this sticky seems like a better home for this:

I'd like to discuss Nintendo buttons.

So obviously original Nintendo buttons are (or always have been) extremely hard to come by. I just finished watching John's latest Youtube video, where he has a segment about Nintendo buttons: (Start at 1h5m36s if the video does not already start there for you)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5xmjurUtrI&t=1h5m36s (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5xmjurUtrI&t=1h5m36s)

By the end of his button segment, he basically says that Mike's Arcade reproductions (while not perfect) are the best you can get.

Is the effort to restore original Nintendo buttons with retrobrite and wet sanding worth it?

Is paying $25 for an original button worth it?

Am I making a big deal over something trivial?

Here is Tighe Lory's video of restoring an original Nintendo button with retrobrite/wet sanding/ polishing compound:

Good call on the buttons post.

I've been trying to collect Nintendo buttons and sticks for a good year now. Mike's Arcade had tried to run a Kickstarter to produce proper 1to1 replicas, but it was underfunded by a couple thousand. My experience is basically that the DK Orange and Gen 1 DK Blue buttons are the hardest and most expensive to get ahold of. Nintendo Vs buttons are the easiest by far.  They have a slightly smaller hole size then standard buttons and when used with the proper microswitches and button holders they have a distinctive feel to them. Same with the Joysticks.

I didn't think i'd ever think this would really matter, but if you're building a replica Nintendo cab, its best you track down some original Nintendo controls. A good tip would be to find a populated Nintendo Vs panel on eBay or one of the forums. they can be had for $50-100 depending on condition and seller. in most cases that will get you sticks, buttons, holders, the works. Then you can rewire it, or adapt the Nintendo harness if you get one it. Vs. CP's make for good 2 player panels.

I'm also going to post this guide to Nintendo Buttons. I found it on KLOV.

saint's note - anyone have a better copy of this image?

[Special thanks to JamBurglar from KLOV for reposting these images here (https://forums.arcade-museum.com/threads/reproduction-nintendo-buttons-question.223621/post-4318964).   :applaud:   -- Scott]

For me, I already bought the materials to polish my joysticks for my restoration, so I am going to do the buttons as well since I already have everything.

I'm going to attempt to save what I have, but if it doesn't work out, there is no loss.  Then I'll order repros and call it a day.

reconditioning old nintendo buttons and sticks is not really a hard thing. some 2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper, Novus (or automotive headlight polish), and a drill works wonders.  Tighe's tutorial is awesome. Just be careful you don't over sand them, or spin them with the drill into a dry facecloth/towel to polish/dry them after the sandpaper as the nylon the button is made from will just shred, and you'll cry.   I also skipped the Retrobright step myself.

That's a real shame. Had I been into this hobby then I would have definitely contributed. Surprised it didn't get funded with all these restorations/reproductions cabs going on today.

I'm really confused by Mike's repo buttons. Where is HE getting them from? Somebody has to be making those and if so, why don't they just tweak the molds to make them 1:1? Of course, I'm under estimating the cost of retooling plastic molds I'm sure. Maybe that is what the Kickstarter was for? I guess they are good enough and nobody cares.

Oh yes, I can agree. I see vs panels, DK Jr panels, and even Popeye and DK3 panels but I rarely see DK panels on ebay.

I'm just gonna get regular old buttons in the right color and U360s in my Nintendo cab. Good enough for me. It's not like I played ANY classic arcade game for more than 5 minutes at a time anyway, at least games that don't let you start again where you died when you insert another coin. I was never that good at old games, but I love em anyway. So I'd probably never even notice the difference.

for the price of some nintendo playchoice 8-way sticks and a little elbow grease, skip the 360's and get some originals. it will save you the hassle of trying to convert the nintendo panel to work with the 360's. Actual nintendo sticks that fit those panels are in abundance, all metal so they just need a polish and a little lithium grease. Plus those Nintendo panels are solid steel and a beast to modify.

I got samples of 2 of the paint codes listed here and they were both lighter than my cab so I paint matched myself at Sherwin Williams.  They suggested oil based and the resulting match is dead on for me.

Can we also get a FAQ or confirmation on what should be painted what color on the entire cab?

For example:  Front edges on left and right should be black. (Gloss? Flat? etc).  Some people would assume (like I did at first) that it's the same color as the sides and front when indeed it should be black.

Thanks in advance!

I started to type it out, but I think a colour guide might work better. I could go quite into detail. For now tho, the inside surface is either all flat black (U.S. Made particleboard cab), or a mix of bare wood, flat black, and gloss black for the Japanese ply wood cabs.  Hmmmm

Yeah, I'll draw something up.  Maybe a YouTube video....

For anyone looking for this information, the OP has decided remove this information and leave the forum after getting called out for some unscrupulous activity.

Vwalbridge uploaded the monitor bezel pics.   :applaud:
- Added them to the post here (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,144583.msg1538836.html#msg1538836) that they were originally in.

Looks like the only remaining issue is finding a higher resolution version of the button comparison image that was posted here (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,144583.msg1529878.html#msg1529878).

Found a KLOV thread where it was posted 7 years ago, but the dropbox link is dead.   :(

- PM'd JamBurglar to see if he has a copy or working link.
