When I first saw this game, I knew I had to build one. It's sort of a cocktail cabinet, but higher and you can play the game with up to 4 people.
Using pictures I found online I have created plans for this cabinet and as soon as my workshop is ready, I'll start building. This will be my third build, before this I created a Galaga cabinet and a pac-man style cocktail (with a Tron theme).
-
Looks good. I played the giant one at a Dave and Busters. I also thought about building this cocktail but I don't think the game available? Just asking because that would determine where you place the joysticks.
Either way, will keep on eye on your progress.
-
Wow.. Pinky is Hot! :D
-
Can't wait to see your progress! So glad someone is taking on one of these cabinets!
-
Thats one cab id love to take on :lol
-
Wow.. Pinky is Hot! :D
Pinky's a Butterface, but still hot overall!
-
nice milf
-
Played this at Timezone in Australia game is very fun!
Milf looks fun to ;D

Finished drawing the cabinet in autocad last night

The question is, what game are you going to run
in there. Pac-man CE DX is the only pac game in that screen format and it's still only 1P.

In another thread, I think he mentioned creating his own Battle Royale version.

Correct, I'm creating my own version of Battle Royale for the PC (Windows). I'm using C# (Visual Studio 2010 Express) and the XNA framework (Microsoft XNA Game Studio 4.0). Updates on the game will also be in this thread.

I like XNA, myself. This would make a good Xbox Live game.

I also planned on building this game as well. I love the cabinet design. However, I ran into the same problem as people here mentioned in that the game is not available. Are you going to make your version of the game available to others? If so, it is time to fire up the CNC router.... :applaud:
-
I believe you can buy Pac-Man Battle Royale for iPad. iPad has an hdmi-out adapter. You could probably make something using that....
-
This got my interest, as I also love that 4-player pac cabinet.

The iPad version is free, but you can only play one level and the controls on the touch screen suck.

Distributing the game would be illegal. I'm developing it for personal use only. Maybe you could help with the development, I could probably use some beta-testers in a couple of weeks.
-
Can't wait until you start with the build. :notworthy:
Also I'd like to help out with the beta testing if you need another person ;D
-
I'm sure you'll find no shortage of beta testers here, (including me) and even more on the UG forums if you really wanted...... ;)
-
I'd beta test
-
I'll alpha test and... ceta...? test as well!

Cut two of the side parts yesterday...

-
I'd beta test that xD
Looks like a professionally built game! Awesome work.
-
Wasn't real impressed with the game. We had more fun dodging the ghosts and eating the pellets than trying to eat each other. The Pac-Man DX thing is a much, much, MUCH better game.
I think the problem is that you are just not good at playing with others! :D
-
Got these in the mail today

Those JLF's?

Those JLF's?
No, these are Seimitsu LS-32's

Nice picture!

Oh my jesus those are some nice looking sticks!

Today I tried fitting the parts together.

Next up:
Cutting the holes for the screen, control panels, cup holders, ventilation
-
:applaud: :applaud:
that looks great! Are you going with the same color scheme? Cup holders? I thought about that once then decided it wasn't worth the clean-up if a spill occurred.

+1, coming together nicely.
-
Very nice cab, i would also be more than willing to help and be a tester for the software.

Are you adding a metal bracketed base like the original?
If not, is it stable enough so that it doesn't easily tip if leaned upon?
-

Yes, I will add a metal base. If you lean on the top it will fall over. And the metal base will also give a bit of extra height.
:applaud: :applaud:

Color scheme will be yellow and black, like the original. I think I will add the cupholders, because the original also has them. Not sure yet what I will use to create the cupholders...suggestions welcome.

looking great!

:applaud: :applaud: :applaud:
That thing is looking sweet! Just a suggestion, you might want to paint the inside of yellow sides. I see it's still white. Once you put the legs/feet on it will show more. (I could be wrong :dunno)
Keep it up!

You have an eye for detail! You're right, the inside is still white. Forgot to paint that... :banghead:
But it's the part where the steel legs will attach, so you will not see that part.

Just got back from Disney Quest where they have 2 pac man battle royale and 1 deluxe. Got some great pictures. Will post more when I get back from holiday.

Disney Quest, I spent a good day in there playing everything they had. (Don't let my Bro know about the place though, I won't get him out of there for 2 weeks). The build is looking good and I am truly looking forward to seeing it in action especially with your own version of the software running.
-
Today, the 32" screen for the cabinet arrived. It's a LG 32LK450 (http://www.lg.com/us/tvs/lg-32LK450-lcd-tv). I placed it on top of a cocktail cabinet for reference.

looks great so far going to be fun seeing what you have planned for the tv :)

Thanks, hope to have this 95% finished within 2 weeks.
Found an interesting site (http://openlgtv.org.ru/wiki/index.php/Hidden_service_modes_/_menus) on how to use the hotel mode on the LG screen. It's now setup to automatically switch on when the cab is powered on (no need to use the remote control) and automagically switch to the RGB PC input.

Wow, that's a great looking project. it also gave me a neat idea for a slim 2 player cocktail cabinet
-
Not taking the thunder away or anything. Thought this would be an interesting look over. Not only does the "small" cocktail style look great, so does the monster brethren.
Installed Dimensions: 100"W x 82"D x 109"H

So when do you start on the Deluxe model?
I saw that one at Disney Quest and it's very impressive (and very big). Does anyone have the plans/blueprints for that one? ;)
-
Installed the glass for the playfield. T-molding should be here next week.

A quick video of the LG Television in action. It's just showing a video of Pac Man Championship Edition DX.
Pac Man Battle Royale Replica (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8gxfyEMxsY#ws)

All we care about is your version of Battle Royale
Here I was thinking that you guys really cared about me ;)
Working on the software. I've got a simple version running (just players that can move around and bump into each other). Players look like blocks now as does the maze because I haven't started on the graphics yet.
-
All we care about is your version of Battle Royale
That not true!
Well...
That's mostly not true.
uh...
Is it done yet?
-
I love this build! How are the viewing angles on the TV?
-
I love this build! How are the viewing angles on the TV?
Viewing angles for the players are perfect. When you get further away, the screen loses some of the brightness, but that is also because I use grey tinted glass. It's basically what you see in the video for all sides.

Very cool. I'm curious, what are you using for game creation? I'm going to do a homebrew (eventually) using Game Maker.

Awesome work! Can't wait to see more pics. Were did you get the tinted glass/how much did it run you? I need to purchase something similar for my cocktail arcade. (finally going to start working on it again)

What software is that. great build BTW? Is that mame?!

I use Visual C# Express (http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/en-us/products/2010-editions/visual-csharp-express) with the XNA 4.0 framework (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=27599) and HLSL for the shaders (the glow around the pacman and other glowy stuff)

I got the glass at a local glass/windows retailer. It was about 80 euros (or $100).

It's not running software yet, it was just a youtube video op pac man championship edition dx. I'm going to run mame on it and my own version of pac man battle royale...
-
This is looking awesome. I would love to build a cabinet like this, but very few games can be played upside down on the opposite side other than PMBR. Can't wait to see how your "game" turns out!!
-
Finished with the yellow color of the top panel
(http://www.xs4all.nl/~hansolo1/royale/13.jpg)
-
Very nice. Me likey.
-
Looking really good. I just seen this cocktail cab on the net about a week ago for the first time and thought I had to make one, it was between the cab im working on now or the pacman cab. Ill prob make a smaller version of one with a 22" screen sometime.
-
:applaud: :applaud:
That yellow looks great. A+ on the paint job Sjaak! This thing is really impressive. I see 2 monitors in the back, gathering parts for the next project are we ;)
Keep it going.

I wish my memory was that good :D
I mostly used pictures of the cabinet that were on the namco (http://www.namcoamerica.com/game.php?gameid=30) website. And I took some pictures of the cabinet myself (for the warning label).

Your work looks spot-on. Kudos to you for attempting this project, especially the game design aspect. I can't imagine the hours of programming it will take to recreate this game.
That gets me to thinking about Toru Iwatani's design of the original Pac-Man, particularly the ghost AI:
"When you play the game, it might seem as if the four ghosts are actively chasing you ... Instead, it’s only Blinky, the red ghost, who doggedly pursues you throughout the game. Pinky, the pink ghost (naturally), simply wants to position itself at a point that’s 32 pixels in front of Pac-Man’s mouth. The blue ghost, Inky, is seeking to position itself at a similar fixed spot. And Clyde, the orange ghost, moves completely at random."

-
Shweet looking cab - liking the way this is turning out. :applaud:
-
That gets me to thinking about Toru Iwatani's design of the original Pac-Man, particularly the ghost AI:
I've been studying some of the gameplay videos of battle royale, but it look like the ghosts move randomly. It wouldn't be fair of course to chase one player when there are 4 pac men(?).
-
And another update:
I made some HPL control panel overlays and attached the joysticks and buttons. The HPL looks really good, almost a shame to cover with the control panel stickers. I also photoshopped one of the control panel graphics on the picture, to see how it's gonna look.
Up next:
- Finish the artwork for under the glass and getting everything printed.
- Installing t-molding
- Steel legs for support (I will probably install some wheels under the legs, because this thing is getting heavy)
- Installing the pc and screen
-

Very good point! I've never played Battle Royale, but it seems like defeating fellow players would be more of a challenge than killing the ghosts anyway.
-
Very nice build! I really like the whole concept. :applaud:

I've been waiting to see this. It does look great!
-
I attached the steel support bars to the underside of the cabinet. I used 4 10mm (0.4") bolts on each side.
The original cabinet has leg levelers, but I preferred wheels, because I want to move it around.
Artwork is in the mail, so I hope to have it soon. After that I have to install the pc and finish the pac man battle royale software.
-
Nice, out of curiosity, what was your source for artwork and the steel supports on the bottom?
-
I put those wheels on a couple of my cabs. They don't really keep it stable. The fact that they rotate, and the wheel is not centered on the bracket, means when someone yanks hard on a stick it will move the cab an inch or so. I imagine with four stick yankers that cab is going to be constantly moving in a 2" radius on the floor. ;D
-

I got some pictures from the Namco website and found lots of pictures online. Using those pictures and the manual (http://www.namco.co.uk/PDF-manuals/namco-manuals/PBR_Manual.pdf) for the machine I created detailed plans in AutoCAD and all the artwork in Illustrator.

I just did a yank test and it's stable as a rock. All four wheels have brakes and the whole thing weighs a ton, so no movement. I'll retest with four stick yankers when I find some.

double post

:applaud: :applaud:
Can't wait to see this thing finished. I have those wheels on my 4-player cab, I guess it's also too heavy to move around during gameplay.
I know plenty of people volunteered to test out the battle royal software but I think the first person should be someone who's been following your project from the beginning. I don't know, maybe the one who replied first to your post. Wonder who that was ::)

It's the swivel action on the wheels and the fact that they aren't centered. Brakes aren't going to stop the wheels from swiveling. If someone yanks hard enough that the wheel can swivel the cab will move.

Very cool. Who do you have printing the artwork, and did a metal shop make the supports for you?
Maybe a silly question, but are you also fabricating the overhead sign and curved metal pole?
Sorry for all the questions, just love the build!

Printing the artwork (stickers) is done by posterxxl.com (in the Netherlands they also print stickers). I've ordered from them before and the print quality is very good.
The steel support is just a square steel tube (75cm x 6cm x 6cm). I ordered the two parts online. I then drilled some 10mm holes for the nuts and bolts to attach the wheel and to connect it to the underside and side of the cabinet.
I thought about doing the sign and the pole because they look real cool, but they won't fit in the game room. So instead I'm going to do just the sign and make it wall mountable and just mount it over the cabinet.
It's the swivel action on the wheels and the fact that they aren't centered. Brakes aren't going to stop the wheels from swiveling. If someone yanks hard enough that the wheel can swivel the cab will move.
I think that if I put it on a more slippery floor that could happen, but it's almost impossible to swivel the rubber wheels on the carpet.

I haven't forgotten about you and all the other testers. First version (just pac men that can move around a maze and don't look like pac men yet) is coming soon
-

I think that those volunteering to test the software should be able to actually build a cabinet like this, which I plan on doing. I really hope to test this out as well in a dedicated cabinet!
-
Just wanna say, this project kicks so much ass.
Every time you update us with a picture, in my head I'm saying "yes! Do it! Do it! Do it!".
Very similar to the originals, great job so far.
How are you going to do the hanging marquee over-head?

Planning on building?? we all have plans on building many types of of cabinets but most fall short and few get built.
Sjaak,
your progress has got me working on my cocktail arcade again. Can wait for your next update.
(Love the artwork so far!)
-

I'm going to do a wall mounted marquee instead of the one on the pole. Started working on the artwork today, this is what I got sofar
(http://www.xs4all.nl/~hansolo1/royale/sign.jpg)
Still need to do the flames in the background and the star thingy in the middle could be better...

That's a good idea. Your artwork is looking good so far.

That sign would look awesome if you carved it, or had it carved. Either or. Totally should go 3D tho.
-
Marquee artwork is done. Still waiting for the control panel stickers, should be here early next week.

Urgh. Are you committed to those flames?
Um, thread title says replica, and they are on the original...

Very nice replica, fine attention to detail. :applaud:

Beautiful, beautiful work, Sjaak!
Woodworking, illustration, game design. Is there anything you can't do? :)

I own a CNC router. ;) I've vectorized and repro'ed several arcade cabinets already. I've been wanting to build this cab for a while now, but without the game to go with it there was no reason. I will DEFINITELY be building a cab like this if I can test the software...
-
(http://www.xs4all.nl/~hansolo1/royale/game_01.jpg)
The game is nowhere near completion, graphics code isn't optimized at all, there debugging information all over the screen. But you can move two blocks around a maze and bump into each other (use the arrow keys for one and aswd for the other).
The game only runs on 1920x1080 Full HD resolution, so you need a PC/Graphic card that can handle that. There will not be a version which supports other resolutions.
To run the game, you need the following runtimes
Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17718)
Microsoft XNA Framework Redistributable 4.0 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20914)
You might also need DirectX 9.0c
DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35)
For performance measuring you can use Fraps (http://www.fraps.com/)
And of course you need the game (http://www.xs4all.nl/~hansolo1/royale/game_01.zip) as well.
I would like to get some input on all the various machines it runs on, so if you get it running, let me know what processor/graphic card/windows version/directx version you have and how it performs.

Sorry, my display capabilities are crap... only goes up to 1300 x something. :(

This is looking more amazing each update!

Sjaak - got the game running on Intel Dual 2.1 with 4gb ram running W764 and stock HP video card. Skipped once or twice but other than that the blocks did behave as expected with good movement and bounce off. Look forward to your next update. If you need any other info let me know.

Almost done, I just need to drill some big holes for the XL cupholders.

The control panel is actually a piece of black HPL with a sticker on top of it. The HPL covers the hole from the top mounted joystick.

Thanks for all the compliments. I'm glad to say that the cabinet is finally done. Still have to do the computer and screen part, but no more woodworking etc.

Nice update, what I'm getting on my system: no bounce off the blue opponents, they pass right through everyone. When any opponent moves off the top of the screen they flash teal for a second before entering the bottom of the field. Yellow and Pink opponents have a tether to either top corner of the screen.
Keep it coming, looking good.

Still can't get this to work on my cocktail arcade. :badmood:
Video card is coming in today ;D
Well done on the build and the software is starting to come alive.
(Also saw your Galaga replica) :applaud: :applaud:

Okay, got the first version to play without the new video card. But the revised version just showed a black screen on the left corner. ??? Here's where I'm hoping to play it on.

Those JLF's?
No, these are Seimitsu LS-32's
-
Thanks! I missed that. The LS-32's look great in there. :)
-
Just noticed on this latest game update that after a collision the two collide-able opponents both have speed reduced by about half and don't seem to regain full speed at any time. Color switch on moving off screen is gone, transitions looking better. Ghosting trail behind the two non-collide-able opponents looks okay but is a bit jerky still.
-
Just wanted to say that this build is awesome. The cabinet itself is incredible, but you're taking it to the next level with your own freakin software. Very cool!

I don't think a PC version will ever come out. Namco never released a PC version of the Pac Man Championship edition games. And even if they did, then it probabbly wouldn't work with 4 joysticks and led buttons.
If I could get a PCB, I probably wouldn't use it, because my own version of the game will have everything the original has and some extra stuff, like the possibility to design your own levels and lot's of configurable options (game speed, nr of ghosts, etc)

mad skills!
You'd better be making this open source ;)
As a software engineer, i'd like to see the code required to make a game like this. I've never touched games on the code side.
-
This is really cool, I have to say.
Since I started building my cab, i've had a couple developer friends show interest in making games to run on my project when it's done, but I never thought to do something on this level! Awesome work so far, Sjaak!

This is so cool. How many lines of code? How many hours of debugging? Do you have sound/music?
There is not a lot of code, the main game code is just 375 lines, player code 336 lines and ghost code 272 lines.
# Lines of code : 1,744
# Methods : 203
# C# source files : 23
# Lines of comment : 460
# Classes : 28
The game is written in C# with some DirectX shaders (HLSL) for the player glow, the straight and wavy lines to the players and the glow around the maze. Debugging and coding is taking a lot of time, I think I already spent almost 100 hours on that. And of course I have some help with testing from two people on this forum.

I don't think Namco would appreciate it if I release a pc/xbox version of their game. I created it for personal use only to use with the cabinet replica. Also, not many people own a 4 player cocktail cabinet with a Full HD screen.

Put me down for a beta test.

I just played the pedestal as well. Great game. Quarter eater though. I'm also curious on how the versions compare. Visually, it seems to be as stunning as the arcade version from the screenshots you posted.
-
Namco does absolutely nothing to protect their IP. You could distribute that game for $10/copy on www.bootlegnamcopacman.com (http://www.bootlegnamcopacman.com) and never get shut down. If you do so, I want 5%.
I'm sure joymonkey would dispute that. He heard from Namco in an awful hurry.
Don't listen to him. He just wants the game for free.

For those who want to help testing, there's instruction below on how to install a older version of the game. If you can get it running let me know what kind of hardware you have and how the performance is.
The game only runs on 1920x1080 Full HD resolution, so you need a PC/Graphic card that can handle that. There will not be a version which supports other resolutions.
To run the game, you need the following runtimes
Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17718)
Microsoft XNA Framework Redistributable 4.0 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20914)
You might also need DirectX 9.0c
DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35)
For performance measuring you can use Fraps (http://www.fraps.com/)
And of course you need the game (http://www.xs4all.nl/~hansolo1/royale/game3.zip) as well.
I would like to get some input on all the various machines it runs on, so if you get it running, let me know what processor/graphic card/windows version/directx version you have and how it performs.

There's a couple of very small differences. Still working on some of the timing (when do ghost leave the center, how long can you stay powered up, etc.) and there's no big pac man yet when you win a round. And I need to make a lot more levels (only have 5 now). But the rest is identical to the original.

Also changing the music is a good idea, definitely not on the arcade version.

Maybe you might be interested in releasing it for someone who wants to build a similar one. I have played the arcade version and this one is already starting to look better. :notworthy: Epic Build!

I'm no lawyer but I think if you altered the ghosts and pacmen to different original characters and did some creative titling that you could possibly do a release and avoid any unpleasantness. Especially if it was released as freeware. Given that you had no access to NAMCO code and did all this from scratch as long there aren't ghosts and pacmen I really don't see how they'd have a leg to stand on.
For your purposes there is no reason to go through that work to change all that and I think at this point your wise to be keeping this to yourself but the gameplay really is coming along so well that it is a shame no to put your work out there in some fashion. I am sure most folks here would like playing your version even if it was monkeys chasing 4 sentient bananas or something. Then you could call it Banana-Royale. Just an idea. Hell, have a contest to redesign the characters for a public release. Winner gets his face/avatar as a piece of bonus fruit or something.
Just something to think about!
-

If you post up the needed animation frames for each type of characters I bet you get some really great submissions. I have a few ideas myself, aside from Banana-Royale TM. I say open it up!
-
Now if this game became completely skinnable, that would be very interesting.
I like where this is going. Although i do like the original as well :)
-
You could also sell customized versions. I bet people would be willing to pay for a version that had kids and parents' faces, for example.

Also remember to release the game as "Definitely not PacSomething" and make all the ghosts and Pacmen completely different. But make the graphics for the title and characters in PNG format and in a folder named "graphics" ;D Now if someone was to release a custom set of Pacman knock-off PNGs afterwards, well that wouldn't be on your head. How can you control what the rest of the world does? >:D
Looks great so far BTW.

Yes, cabinet isn't done yet, but I already ordered the marquee and sideart. I have to start a thread on that soon...

I may have missed it, but what did you make the box out of?
The box is made of 10mm MDF. It measures 70cm x 50 cm (27" x 20"). I used the bottom part as a template to route two pieces of plexi. The black edge is just a aluminum corner profile painted black.

Again... this is so cool.
I think it's amazing that you coded your own version of the game itself.
My son saw the commercial for "Wreck-It-Ralph" the other day and asked if I could put it on his machine. I told him the game didn't really exist.
Reading your thread makes me want to code my own.
Great job!

Joined JUST to test this and just say in the almost 25 years I have been in the Arcade Industry this is one of the most incredible Projects I have ever seen. (in scope and in execution)
That Said running solid 60 FPS on:
Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition
16GB DDR 3 Ram
Geforce GT 240 (X2 in SLI)
Going to give it a whirl on the Media Center PC as well.
-
Wow!!! Every aspect of your project is unbelievable. The cabinet is beautifully done and the game looks spot on. Congratulations.
I tested the third version that you posted, and I got 58 fps in an i7 3770k (no overclock) with on board video. Are you still accepting beta testers? :drool
Anyway, congratulations again.
-
This is just getting better and better. I know I'm just repeating what others have already said, but for one person to execute the whole software/hardware thing is a rarity. The effort put into this is truly astounding and will no doubt be commended. So good to see someone going the extra mile! :applaud:

As mentioned by many others before me: This built is just simply amazing! :applaud:
If my project turns out only half as nice as this one I'm a happy man ;)

Yes, for sure. I already had one cpu player. Shouldn't be hard to make that 3. And I like the new statistics at the end of the game. And the crown of course

How close is your version to the arcade version then Sjaak?, i take it the ghosts and other pac-men have different behavior to the arcade version?
I have played the arcade version a bit, but i guess its too late to be a 'Beta tester' for this now :'(??

Sjaak, very nice work on the cabinet and the software.

Incredible project.
Love the marquee and the LED lighting.
I've been using that stuff and its awesome.

Sjaak, I would be happy to beta test it. Message me if you want me to help out!

Finally got to play PMBR at an arcade in Disney Orlando yesterday. They had two tabletops, and on one, two joysticks were set to eight – way. Pretty sad.
Really fun, though. I got to play it and Fix-it Felix with my nephew and I was bragging about Sjaak's builds. :)

I've only seen three versions of the game on this thread. The game is running perfectly fine on my computer. I'm running an i7 2600K with a GTX 570 Superclocked HD. The resolution was not a issue for me either. Any word on when we can get proper playable version of the game? I know that your currently working on Banana Royale, to avoid the Namco copyright problems, etc.

Any chance you can post a picture of your arcade cabinet?

Just came across this thread. This is so rad. Sadly, I've yet to play Pac-Man Battle Royale. Looks like a pretty fun game.

Sjaak,
finally started building my pacman-battle royal replica. I know I contacted you asking how to mount the monitor...(been slacking off all summer). But here's a quick pic. Will start a thread soon.
I do have some more side pieces cut, just not in this pic.
Not sure I want to mount all 4-joysticks permanently, maybe have a removable side control panel when in use.

Working on a version of the software with customizable graphics, sounds and levels for the Banana Royale contest. I did some testing with alternate graphics.

Nice work Sjaak! Love that tracking "how many items you ate" at the end.
That way you can all out the players that just avoided everything... ;D
(I know I still owe you a finished Pac-Man Battle Royal cocktail pic) It's coming... :-[

:applaud: I really dig the old graphics look.

No kidding. That is awesome!

Why wasn't Pac Man Battle Royale released in 1987?
FIXT

Love your work Sjaak :applaud:
I really want to build one of these. Been messing around in Sketchup trying to get the dimensions right before I start cutting. Still trying to figure out the proper way to mount the monitor. I think I'm gonna go with another joystick at the end of the table for classic vertical games too.
-
Very impressive work, dude! That is so clean and polished looking that you could easily sell the final product (obviously with a different default skin). Great stuff!

Looking good! Just put the monitor on the U shaped box that goes under the playfield. There should be enough room.

The big cabinet was finished a while ago. I was at Eurocade 2015 yesterday running a custom tournament version.
The Banana Royale spinoff is pretty much done, but I don't think anyone is interested in that version anymore.
The 8 bit version needs some 8 bit sound effects, but since I'm crap at doing sound and music, that's going to have to wait.
Do pac man 256
And I'm working on a 256 version with the original graphics with a special Pac Man 256 cabinet.
-
Interest waned because you never updated it. I put in hours on that monster version and then nothing. No sound update. No nada.
-
Awesome project Sjaak!
I was searching custom made Pac-Man Battle Royale on Google and ended up here. I'd like to build one myself and was wondering if you could share the cut layout or exterior dimensions of the cabinet, it would help a lot!
-
Hi Sjaak,
A couple of friends and myself are looking to build our own Battle Royale clone arcade cabinet for some great basement fun. Are you willing to share/sell your binaries and/or source code?
I have another project of building a bar top cabinet, with pallet wood, for my RetroPie project. This one will only involve USB ports/joysticks though (more like a portable console with a cool look and feel).
Thanks! :)
Simon

Based on past experience, his Battle Royale software is not for sale or distribution. Just FYI.

Unfortunately the game crashes for me randomly at times...I've been able to figure out a little bit with attaching VS to try and debug the error, but to figure out what needs solved is not exactly simple considering it's been run through a code obscuring program: https://confuser.codeplex.com/
Glad I didn't spend too much time messing around with customizing it before finding out that Sjaak is moving on from it. The last published version I can find isn't stable for me, and even if it were, it has the timer limitation. Maybe one day I'll learn game development principles enough to build my own version, but I was hoping I could learn some from poking around.
-
You can buy the boards from NAMCO for about $2800 if you don't have exchanges or around $1600 if you have boards to exchange. Was there any progress on getting a bug free version for the PC?

Same for me, except I spent all the time to bring in the classic sprites from pac-man, and even make the baby pac sprite. It just crashes at completely random times. It could be first maze,...it could be after you've all gone through every maze and restarted, or it could be at the last maze. It's really weird. Can't some programming genius fix this problem? Or please Sjaak, just jump back in long enough to fix that random crashing thing? This is soooooo much better than the official version, and there is so much fun the community could have with the ability to make your own custom mazes.
-
I'm curious what version of the software you are running and where you got it, since I never released the software...
Is it the Banana Royale software?
-
Yes it's the last version you linked to in the other Banana Royale thread. BananaRoyale5.zip
Our family is having a blast with this! We just have to keep restarting the program. We just got through all the rounds and then made it through 5 seconds of the next first round and it crashed.

That's not a crash, there is a timer limitation on the program (probably 5 minutes). Nothing I can do about that, because I don't have the source code anymore.
I can try to see if I can put the 8 bit version online (without the graphics), which is a much better version since it supports the Tiled level editor (http://www.mapeditor.org/ (http://www.mapeditor.org/)) and has less sprites. But that will take some days.
-
I would really like to play BR properly with friends but the version they realeased on Museum is utter ****!
I mean you cant change the keys and you cant have multiplayer so its basiclly useless!
Very sad :(

Oh wow, had no idea that was a timer. Bummer about loosing the source code. If you throw the 8 bit version up will it still take the same sprite folders that the bananaroyale5.zip has so one could just transfer their work over and have it function properly? That would be great!
I'm sure there's still a lot of interest in this, it just might not be noticeable (views, vs. actual comments). For me, your masterful adaptation is hands down the best version out there.
Here's what I came up with for our Pac-Family:

Sprites, sounds, levels????

-
This update (http://www.xs4all.nl/~hansolo1/BananaRoyale6.zip) to the executable removes the timer. Just copy it over the BananaRoyale5 from the BananaRoyale topic.
To play the game, you still need to supply your own graphics (the old ones still work) and your own sounds. Or use the really nice graphics from damageinc86. Crashes can be fixed by restarting the game ;)
-
You sure that update is working? File size is about 80kb. The previous version was 625....

Yes, playing it right now. I used a different obfuscator which does better compression.

Beautiful! We just played through two full rounds! Thank you very much sjaak!
I was also wondering when making mazes using the tiled program, how do you know which of the four power pellets you put down is going to actually show up in the maze? I am having trouble figuring out how to get more than one on screen, and then the one I thought would be there, wasn't, it was one of the other four i put down.
-
Where do I get this Bannana royale 5? I would love to give this a go.

Number of pellets = Number of remaining players - 1
Position is chosen at random from the 4 defined positions

Ahhhh that makes sense now. Cool, thanks. Making a decent maze is harder than it looks lol. Maybe we should start a thread just for that

I just spent an hour looking through these threads... starts to get a little confusing after a few hundred posts.... I have version 5... but if I run the executable it just crashes in Win7.
Actually tried 4,5,6... Can you point a finger in the right direction? I would love to get this running as its quite an awesome game. Thanks.

(Related to regular BananaRoyale6)
Hello.
To get right to the point. This game crashes on my friends pc right when you get to "Fight!" before any movement happens. It works on mines though. We both have location of the file in mind to not have spaces in the address. Heck we even tried it with it in the root. Yes I've read all the thread posts here, including the one with "Hyrule Rumble" and "Battle Royale replica".
We both have the bananaroyale.exe on the Avast Exclusion list. The only difference between me and my friend's pc is that his is Windows 7 and my mini laptop where I successfully play it on is Windows 8. I'm concerned since I want to transfer this game to my Main PC where I have all of my games and it's a Windows 7 PC.
We also tried running as Administrator......he already has the latest XNA and .NET stuff.
What could be the problem?
Another few things: Is there a way to make the game into "Deluxe" display within the settings? (nothing is flipped, all of the text are facing the same direction as if all players were looking at big flatscreen tv in a living room)
What are the other difficulties. The default is "Normal" in the settings. Are there more? Is it three and other two are "Easy" and "Hard" written exactly?

Hey Benoit thanks for the heads up ! I don't know if you can help me. As soon as I run x360ce it creates xinput1_3.dll and then everything stops working. I can't even start the game. As soon as I delete xinput everything works fine.
Also (it is a different problem altogether) do you know if it's possible to map my buttons from my ipac ultimate to 4 players there ? It only registers for player 1
Thanks so much for the link, I lost all hope playing this one day on my 4 players cabinet

Hmm, no joy here. Just purchased the game on steam, copied files to directory but when it starts it reports "Steam must be running to play this game". Of course Steam is open and running...
The base game works fine from the Steam app itself however.

Too bad would be a fun game for arcade parties. Will have to sit back and wait till this gets more developed.
Cheers

I had never heard of pacman battle royale 4 player available for home use until recently from reading on here.
So you are saying buying that pacman battle royale game works, but when you apply the github hack it breaks? right?
4 player pacman cocktail machine would be quite entertaining for the family.

Do you have any closer up images of the monitor and glass? How is the glass secured onto the box? Is there a border or some type of bezel that is between the glass and wood?
