Title: Nerd dungeon
Post by: thomas_surles on September 29, 2017, 12:36:07 pm
So im finally setting up my nerd dungeon/ jam station in my new house and just wanted to share the progress on my console display. I got some chepo book cases from walmart for just under 18 bucks a piece.
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-3-Shelf-Bookcase-Multiple-Colors/55533612 (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-3-Shelf-Bookcase-Multiple-Colors/55533612)

These worked out great and i went with 3 to leave a little room to add more. Pro tip if using a heavy crt make sure to center it between 2 of these cases to support the weight as these are still a little cheap but do hold up pretty well.

Still need to unpack all the hoockups and cut holes in the backing to run the cords through. And im waiting for my switch boxes to come in
Also there is a ps4 not pictured, its currently in the living room.

Looking good man.  It might be because I live out in the sticks, but we never get in any pre-fab furniture worth having.  The selection at the local S-mart is always pretty Spartan.

I ordered it and had it delivered. Put them together in an hour.

Thanks. My only complaint so far is it is just at tad taller than i would like where i have to look up slightly while sitting. I prefer my eye level to be straight ahead or slightly down. But i couldnt find anything i like any shorter.

Got everything hooked up. Most of the consoles run to the crt via an 8 port av switch box. The original xbox, ps3 and wii u are hooked up to the led tv. Now might be a good time to invest in led lighting. Also the sony trinitron crt looks so much better in person than on camera, but the atari 2600 looks like garbage.

If anyone cares, this is the switch box i used.

Starting from 1: nes, snes, n64, gamecube, sege genes/cd/32x, dreamcast, ps1, ps2

The atari 2600 is hookex up through coaxial, and the magnavox oddysey 3000 is also coaxial but not connected. Original xbox is av 1 on the led tv and ps3 and wii u are of course hdmi.

So ignore the turd mame in the back. Thats going in the fire soon and is being scrapped for parts. The white 3 drawer thingy by the led tv holds all my controllers. I took advice from a metal jesus ans rubber banded all the cords and put them into ziploc bags and labeled them ny system. So no more digging out controllers from a tangled mess from hell. Still working on wall hanging the guitars and replacing the metal shelves in the back with a proper book case. The slot machine is also going away to my mother in law as i mentioned in the free crap thread.

Build a platform for under your coach. If you still drawers in it you can get ride of the plastic ones that hold your controllers.

Definitely! The cheap ones are utter Garbage!

They do a 3 port and a 5 port version.

I have the 3 port in my living room connected to PS4, Sat box and Android box.

Then I have a 5 port in my nerd dungeon.
It only has the Sat box, Segapi and Pitendo attached to it at the mo but wanted room for expansion!

Now that I've got back into collecting, the key seems to be buying whatever comes up for a good price rather than what you want or were looking for.  Usually, when I set out to buy a specific console, I can never find it at a good price.  I keep running across consoles that I don't have, but wasn't necessarily looking for.  Thankfully fun games are fun games regardless of the platform.

fyi There's an Odyssey 3000 on Ebay right now with the box for 30 bucks.

Good lord, a Sega Genesis, Model 2 Sega CD, the plastic Sega CD shelf extender, and a 32X.  Plus a Power Base Converter.  I used to call that rig The Altar of Sega back in the 90s and frequently suspected I was the only one on Earth with one.   :lol  I actually called their damn warehouse to get that extension on the Sega CD.

I picked up the extra Sega Genesis and Sega CD with the shelf extender from a cousin with all his games for next to nothing when he got a Play Station. The 32X I got for Xmas when it came out. Most of that stuff I picked up on the cheep at thrift stores & years sales.

My next step besides the tully im working on will be to rig up something for my racing wheel. I originally intended for a full cab but that was long before i moved into this house. So i was thinking something that can be setup infront of the futon. Even if it just a stand to hold the wheel.
Title: Re: Nerd dungeon
Post by: pbj on November 29, 2017, 11:47:43 am
You gotta throw a language switch on that Genesis.  Some of the games do all kinds of dumb ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- when you flip them over to JAP.  Works with the 32X games, too - you just flip the switch immediately after you turn on the system to bypass the region check.  I actually owned both the SegaCD and 32X while they were viable, but I paid all of $90 (IIRC) for the CD and $20 for the 32X.

My mother sold my SMS, Genesis, 32X, and Sega CD collection for $20 less than a week after I went to college.  Yep.  Now I don't call or visit.

Lol. I paid $11 for the genesis on ebay a few years back. Then used gift cards to get the cd about $90 and got the 32x a couple months ago for $20. Still havent even tested the 32x. I need an ac adapter.

I've thought about setting up an ATX power supply as a Bench power supply and running all my consoles that have bricks directly to and just add reciters or DC to DC (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Ultra-small-LM2596-power-supply-module-DC-DC-BUCK-3A-adjustable-buck-module-regulator-ultra-LM2596S/32804591344.html?spm=2114.search0104.3.266.utOPco&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_4_10152_10065_10151_10344_10068_10130_10345_10324_10342_10547_10325_10343_10546_10340_10341_10548_5690020_10545_10541_10562_10084_10083_10307_10539_5080015_10312_10059_10313_10314_10534_10533_100031_10604_10603_10103_10594_10557_10558_10596_10595_10142_10107,searchweb201603_25,ppcSwitch_4&algo_expid=7546be52-0e29-4715-82be-d118323fcc19-33&algo_pvid=7546be52-0e29-4715-82be-d118323fcc19&rmStoreLevelAB=1) converters in line for any odd voltage.

So i mentioned the racing wheel earlier and it got me thinking that i also dont have room for a proper computer desk either. So i started doodling a design for a racing setup that can double as a desk when the wheel is detached. So i can pop the wheel off and use a wireless mouse and keyboard for other stuff like pc games, and music recording. I can keep the pc hooked up to the led tv in with the consoles.

I see. Its a bit wobbly. Plus i have to lean forward.  I need something that sticks out a little more so i can sit all the way back.
Anybody ever test the momo on a ps2 or ps3? Id like to play simpsons road rage but the dolphin isnt doing it for me pcsx2 is a little better but still sucks. Ive heard mixed reviews about it actually working on ps2. Dont have any games to test at the moment.
