Title: Game competition #4: Mame - Q*Bert
Post by: DeLuSioNal29 on October 02, 2008, 07:13:04 pm
Since I was the top score for Zookeeper for # 3 I get to choose the next one.   ;D

Game competition #4: Mame - Q*Bert

- parent set, default settings

- use any mame version or variant you wish

- period is two weeks from today

- high score wins (a tie means there's more than one winner)

- no savestates, savestate practices, etc during the round.

Have fun!

Nice choice. Hopefully enough people have controls setup so they can play some Q*bert!

I used to play it on Colecovision, so I got used to the normal controls.  So I have it set up the same on my cab.  No diagonals.

Here's my first score:  51,080

.inp (MAME .119) and snapshot below.

I had Q*Bert for the C64. I could never get used to the controls that way... (except when I rotated the joystick). What is it with you comp people posting games that I totally suck at? Like that one who posted a comp for defender... I suck at that game too!

:P

Guess I really am a late 80's to mid 90's arcade dork....

Nice!

Looks like having a showcase will pay off today, I can disconnect my podium & turn it at an angle using player 2's joystick.

Ah, just in time for the weekend

Yeah, I don't have a Q-stick. It's funny because I've been draggin my feet on getting a U360, and I don't know as if I'll get the lead out of ---my bottom--- to make the comp, so I'll have to go with programmed diagonals - though, I don't think I ever got that high a score when I did have a dedicated stick. That brings something else to mind: winner term limits, and I have two ideas:

1. if someone wins two consecutive comps, the runner up gets to pick the next game

2. after three consecutive wins, the runner up gets to pick the next game

What do you all think?

Lemme guess, you always end up as runner up in the official comps? :)

Got 132,960 on my first attempt. Had some stupid deaths, and why does Sam/Slick have such a knack for coming out just as you are jumping on the last square?   Since DeLuSioNal29 made his .inp available, I'll make mine too ;D He didn't say which version, mine is WolfMAME 106 (same version used for Twin Galaxies) I did mine using a keyboard, set the directions on the 4 corners of the numpad.

Yesterday I saw King of Kong.
Really liked the Q-bert granny beating all the young guys. Wonder if she hangs around on BYOAC  :notworthy:

Not unless they have the internet from the great beyond. She died in a car accident in Oct 2006.

I hadn't thought of such an angle. Thanks.

I ain't never got close to that high so I dunno.  Actually, I think I'm out this one unless I get my U360s and mount them before the comp's over. I hate playing games with the wrong controls, hence why I haven't been playing Q-bert or Congo Bongo for a while.

I didn't know it was a car accident.  I hate seeing old people die in car accidents...poor lady made it that many years and up and dies prematurely in a car accident...that's ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow---.

Reminds me of the old saying:

"I wanna die peacefully in my sleep like my grandpa did... not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car!"

After half an hour... I am giving up... I cant even break 8000pts! I blame it on the joystick angle,  even though I found if I use my player 1 joystick with my left hand, it all makes sense while im playing haha... sigh, just not my game I guess. I may let it sit a bit then try again in a few days.

I gotta say kudos to the guys with the serious skills!!  :notworthy:

Let me just add that it wasn't the first time I played Q*Bert, just my first attempt for this competition. I used to play it back in the day, and had it for the Atari 2600 (my cat used to love watching me play on the TV...she'd try and chase Q*bert as he bounced around the maze ;) ) I don't know what my highest score is, but I doubt I've ever gotten over 200K. Once you get to level 5 or 6, where you have to hit the cubes twice, and if you hit it a 3rd time, it goes back to the original color, it gets pretty tough.

OK, upped the ante a bit ;D Got 141,880. At one point I had 6 lives in reserve, but those higher levels took care of that...

@Crazykong well I feel a little better knowing that thanks to your cats, you have some "training" that has helped you get such a high score :)

Since I will obviously be the runner up with my impressive 7600ish score... I think that we should pick a game that I have some actual experience with. Its a newer game but still a classic to me: Bubble Bobble. yep, its cute, and has dinosaurs that blow bubbles, and you get points for eating fruits and vegetables... but I kick some serious bubble in that game haha

After I acclimated myself to the keyboard, I got up to 14705. I have no prayer of ever hitting the scores of some of you guys, so there is no point of screen capping it.

500,785 - I took the screenshot just before I died.
The difficulty seems to peak on level 9.

Damn. Not that I'm surprised, just sorta surprised someone with that ability posted here as usually they're busy at MARP. I think I've gotten to the 'change back again' board and then it was just too much like a puzzle for me.

I would love to see the .inp files for some of these higher levels... as I've never gotten to them before.

Anyone willing to record one?

I included one for my 133K game for WolfMAME 106 (I normally use that version, since I submit stuff occasionally on Twin Galaxies site, that's the versoin they require)

Yeah having a showcase control panel at an angle didnt help.

I quit  :'(

Hmmm. I would think it would. It's the same as turning the stick an eighth of a turn. Worked fine when I had one like that.

Also, here's an old Q-bert-inspired game that's pretty cool:  Q-bob (http://www.moonrock.com/qbob/index.html)

Oh I am sure it helped but I am so bad at that game it didn't help enough. ;)

If you gave me expensive oil paints & brushes I still couldn't make art (well I could but you see the comparison) .

What, did everyone forget about this?  I had it in mind but lost track of the timing. It's probably a good idea to include the date of expiration so that one doesn't have to remember exactly when a comp starts to figure out it's end date.

Anyways, I just got one of my U360s in and just because I got a new high score, and been places I hadn't been before, I'm going to post a screen shot. The highest I recall is 39 something - but that was years ago - I don't remember what level it was. (Maybe I have a snap. I'll have to look). I swear, I got all the squares on this board black - and it didn't end! Oh, I guess they're supposed to be white. Sheesh. I'd used up all my discs getting points so I was done.

And for the winner (or runner up, if the winner doesn't pick one in time), you have to pick a new game. So by Monday the 20th, a new comp should be started.

My pick is Robotron 2084.

I don't play Robotron that much even though its simplicity draws me on occasion but it would seem that MARP has special rules that can be attirbuted to making the game too easy if they're not implemented.

There needs to be some simple rules (else it'll turn into MARP) to level the playing field in these comps. Else when I win one, we'll end up with Hyper Sports and arguements about NVRAM use, breath trick use etc.

I really like robotron and I really suck at it, but can we have some rules please, or should we all just go for it?

Robotron is a good one, although I think the "speed hacked" Ms. Pacman would be fun too.  Wouldn't mind see some .inp files of both.

Id love to get in on one of these competitions but my scores are down right laughable compared to what you guys put up. my high score in Qbert is like 36,000

That's not too much lower than mine. Of course, if we were doing an annual tally kind of thing, it might matter more.

Anyways, we have basic rules - no cheats allowed, default settings, etc - it's mainly on those neo kiddie games I'm guessing that have these mysterious special ways of getting high scores or whatever, and I'm not really interested in those games, so you all figure it out when those come up. If there are folks here who can't place well in MARP and hence are here to make themselves feel good, well there are terms limits.

NVRAM on Hypersports? This isn't that serious. I wouldn't worry about it. Anything that the original hardware allowed in default mode everyone is welcome to use.

And if we were voting, I'd generally not include clones or any game, let alone something like speed-hack mspac. Blech.

Anyways, okay, onward. I'll make the thread. (There might be lots of competition on this one.)
