It is mame on a PC board so there is no real difference except that it is an old version with a underpowered CPU and you have less leeway to make changes because it is prepackaged for you.

The benefit of the jamma board would be that it will boot straight up into a menu for selecting games, unlike windows which you have to try and hide etc.

And the benefit of the PC would be control over what games, menus, controls etc, along with the option to add more content if required

P.S. i've never used a xxx-in-1 jamma board so just going off what i've seen

The jamma board uses either windows 2000 or XP so it can hide the windows boot up.  Again they have just done the work of hiding windows and packaging it with a front end.  You can do the same with your own PC and MAME.

oh ok thanks for that, i dont mind if i have to boot up and i see windows at all tbh

if theres no real difference i think im better off using the newest version of mame etc...

will games run better if there on the new version of mame? (making sure i have the matching rom of course)
or are they better on the older version jamma board

If you have limited CPU resources you are better off with an older version of mame.  That said it is nice to be able to choose what mame you are going to use and get the matching ROMs.  The jamma board locks you in to ? version of mame it can be reprogrammed but is alot harder to work with than a PC that you have full control over.

As most know here,  I have no problem with most of the multi's...

...that said,  the XXXX-in-1's are ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.  I've dicked around with 2 different versions and they are ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.  They are under powered running an older version of MAME with much much much less flexibility. Plus there are multiple reports you get USED ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- (of the 2 I got,  1 was OBVIOUSLY using used components...right from the distribution company!)...

Also, there are select games on the multiboard that are emulated poorly.  Sound being the main issue.  So if you're looking for a close to faithful emulation, MAME is the way to go, not the multiboards.

Isn't the obvious advantage with the xxx-in-1 box that it is equipped with a JAMMA interface?
I.e. that you don't need to mess around with keyboard and video interfaces etc.

As others already stated, it is a MAME PC but with restrictions in what you can alter.
The ones I have used is similar in performance (as long as you play the old classics) even though the CPU and RAM is obsolete compared to a new PC.

So, if you can live with the games and frontend that comes with it and prefer a simple and convenient installation - then the xxx-in-1 box is for you.

also is there a list which multi boards have poorly ported games?

Stop being lazy and build your own MAME system... you won't regret it...

I have a question and I am not trying to walk over a line, but I have an "underpowered PC"  that I was planning on using on a Vertical setup eventually.  Is there a xxx-n-1 that can just be downloaded and loaded on a HDD pre-setup etc???

Not asking where to download it, just if it exists to be downloaded?

Another reason to go with your own Mame system is that those "xxxx in 1" boards always seem to come with some f'ugly game menus.  I personally can't stand looking at that multi-coloured font, grid-based game selection and blue-ish gray background.  :puke

Not sure about that, but it is very easy to use an older version of MAME along with MaLa or something.
My bartop is a 933mhz Pentium 3. I think I'm using .67 on there and it runs all the golden age stuff great. Its not gonna run NFL Blitz, but some newish shooters like Mars Matrix work fine.

Yes, and no.

First, we have to split these boards to x86 and ARM based PCBs:
- PC (x86) based boards are not "underpowered" computers, they run AdvanceMAME, so you do not want or need this.
- ARM boards like 39-in-1, 48-in-1 and 60-in-1, they run vertically oriented games, so this is what you are talking about.

Unfortunately, while these PCBs are "underpowered", they are not PCs, so this is of no use to you again, and If you were to make your own ARM based PCB you would want something like this (http://www.gumstix.com/ (http://www.gumstix.com/)):

However, once you realize the cost of this very cool "Computer-on-Modules" and similar 'empty' PCBs is more than actual 60-in-1, then making "your own" does not make much sense any more. What's more, these boards have poor sound, amazingly terrible in some games like Gyruss & Scramble, so you are much better off with some underpowered PC and VAntAGE (Vertical Antiquated Arcade Game Emulator), where even with old 486 PC you would have more games supported and better sound, and if your computer is anything at, or above pentium 233MHz then you can run MAME too, and with it most, if not all, of the '80-'90 games. Both, better price and emulation quality you get with PC based setup, and if you make it yourself then you also get a lot of customization options.

PC based xxxx-in-1 are not really "dumped" as normally arcade ROMs are, they are 'hard drive' images, they are big and they contain just plain PC software you can download, install or copy/paste separately. I would not expect to find these HD images together with other arcade ROMs, but, on the other hand 39in1 and 48in1 are actually even emulated in MAME, so you could expect to find these for download wherever the other arcade ROMs are.

indeed

but my problem with older versions, in my experience, the sounds is screwed up in older versions of MAME.  Donkey Kong for example

From what I've read, they're screwed up on these boards too.
Have you run an old version with the /samples in the folder? I don't know if they're 100% accurate, but I've never noticed anything that felt wrong about them.
