I'm sure this will get crushed, but I'll kick it off.  88,560 on my 3rd attempt.  This is the first time I've ever played this version of Pac-Man and I must say it is VERY FUN! I'm sure I'll drastically improve on this score.

What are the controls on Rally X like for this compilation?  I could add this to my dedicated vertical 4-way cab but I'm not sure Rally X would work..

Great choice--I love it.

Is anybody else getting frequent game resets?  It's not MAME or my PC resetting, but often, after clearing a level, the game will jump right to the "Select from 6 games" screen (or something to that effect).  And once, I paused it between levels & the next level was horribly garbled--I seemed to be playing on a maze that didn't match the maze shown.  Tricky!

I'm using 133.

Here's the rev history from MAWS.  And the driver is still listed as "preliminary", so I guess it's not surprising that there are glitches.

0.136u4: Heihachi_73 changed description to 'Namco Classic Collection Vol.2'.
0.136: David Haywood commented out some harmful and suspicious looking interrupt generation in NamcoND1 driver until it's being properly verified; fixes Game Options menu in NCV2 test mode.
0.127u5: Fabio Priuli fixed unable to coin/start Namco ND-1 games.
0.123u1: Added 'Service Mode' dipswitch.
0.122u5: Atari Ace fixed a memory leak in video/ygv608.c (memleak0122u2ora).
0.106u7: Aaron Giles fixed a heavily flicker in ncv1 and ncv2 (vidhrdwygv608.c).
0.104u4: Adam Bousley added save states to Namco Classics Collection Vol.2
0.99u10: R. Belmont fixed missing sound in Namco Classics games.
5th August 2005: R. Belmont - Got a nice present today from a coder who goes by Cync: a set of major bugfixes to the H8/3002 CPU core. As you know, this is the "sub-CPU" in many later Namco games. So what do the fixes do? They correct most of what was wrong with the sound and music in all of the ND-1 (NCV1/NCV2) and System 12 games. All the games involved now sound way better, and of course I've already backported the fixes to ZiNc so the music's better there too.
0.96u2: Swapped left/right sound channels.
0.86u4: Mark McDougall added tile flipping in NCV2.
0.86u3: Namco Classics Improvements [R. Belmont]. Added H8/3002 MCU and C352 sound chip. Both ncv1 and ncv2 are now fully playable with full sound and music. R. Belmont fixed btst #imm, @Rn instruction - it was giving reversed results, which crashed ncv2's MCU program. Some tile flip problems in classic pacman / rallyx and some sound problems (hanging sound in digdug classic). Added H8/3002 (16384000 Hz) CPU2 and C352 stereo sound.
2nd September 2004: R. Belmont - Fixed a bug in the H8/3002 CPU core. Got it on speaking terms with the 68000 on the Namco ND-1 hardware. Result: Namco Classics Collection volumes 1 and 2 are both fully playable with full sound and music.
29th June 2004: R. Belmont - Started cleaning up ZiNc's H8/3002 core for MAME submission (this will add sound and fix protection on Namco Classics 1 & 2 and the System 12 games*). Fixed some flag calculations on the ADD opcodes and some "edge cases" on the C352 to improve music in NCV1/2.
0.74u2: Mark McDougall added Namco Classics Collection Vol.2 (Namco 1996) and clone (Japan).
0.99u9: Aaron Giles removed tilemap_dispose call and fixed the two drivers that were using it. This fixes improper save state registrations in megasys1 and namcond1/ygv608 games.
0.99u1: Cync fixed several problems in the H8/3002 core. Improves sound in Namco ND-1.
25th March 2003: David Haywood fixed the incorrect graphics in Namco Classics Vol.2 but it still crashes when trying to start a game.
0.62: CusKey simulation for Namco games [John Wil].
4th July 2001: Mark McDougall added Namco Classics Vol.2 to the ncv1 driver, but it doesn't quite work because of missing rotation / zoom emulation.
0.53: Added Namco Classics Vol.2 (Namco 1995) (Testdriver).
16th July 2001: Mark McDougall optimized the Namco ND-1 driver.
0.37b16: Mark McDougall added Namco Classics Vol.2 (Japan) (Testdriver).
11th June 2001: Mark McDougall worked on adding Namco Classics Vol.2, but the driver isn't complete yet.
9th June 2001: Guru - Namco Classics Collection #2 is now dumped. Thanks to Malcor for dumping the surface-mounted ROMs.
19th May 2001: Guru - Received the Namco Classics #2 PCB and have sent it off to a friend to be professionally dumped.

Oh, and by the way, 112, 640.   ;D

Thanks,
-Jason

I managed 93,000 first try.  I had no glitches but I'm using 140.  It did say that the game wasn't 100% when it fired up.

i'm pretty much out this round.. game seems impossible without a 4way. second screen was glitchy too... no pills and i could "float" over all the walls.

I'm using .139 without any problems with this game.  I'm also using an 8 way and it took me a little getting used to, but I'm managing pretty well with it right now.  I have a Ms. Pacman stick from Tornado Terry I have yet to install in my CP yet.  I'm sure it would be much better with that, but I'm still having fun with the 8 way.

I'm using an 8-way/4-way top-switchable bat stick (I forget the name).  I would *so* prefer a ball top.  I need to add that to my to-do list...swap shafts...

Anyway, some notes.

1 - If I get through a successful game w/ no resets, I exit MAME & reload it.  It's the "reboot Windows to fix your problem" mentality.  I'm not sure if it helps, though...

2 - Pausing seems to encourage glitching.

3 - Learn the ghosts & their behaviors, especially the 5th ghost (the blue one w/ glasses).  Try to catch him just as he exits the ghost house, since he's too fast to catch.  When he exits, he hunts down another ghost--it's always the same ghost on each level.  So, get between him & his target & you'll catch him.  Then you get to eat all 5 ghosts.  Big points.

4 - If the 5th ghost eats another, it grows & gains a power: red = charge fast like a bull, pink = hop far like a bunny, green = split like a mirror, yellow = eat pellets & make them big & slower to eat(?).

5 - The pills have similar color codes: red = speed up, pink = hop all ghosts into the ghost house, green = split like a mirror, yellow = your mouth moves faster but nothing really changes(?)

6 - If you've eaten a red pill & are fast, you have no excuse for not getting all the small ghosts first & then eating the big ghost.  Eating the big ghost gives double his point value, so increment the point value on the small ghost & then eat the big one.

7 - Pills seem to appear as rewards for eating ghosts.

8 - Fruit seem to appear as rewards for eating dots...or based on time?  Fruit point values start out really low on the first many levels.

That's all I've got for now.  I'm really enjoying this--this game was done quite well.

Oh, and by the way, 224, 510.

 ;D

This keeps mis-reading my stick movements/there's latency that results in delay - and nearly always death. Pass. By the way, the set name is NCV2.

There was some code in older versions that seems to be buggy / incorrect and caused the game to reset at various points..

That *shouldn't* happen in current versions.  If it does, please let me know.

When you say "older versions" & "current versions", can you please specify rev numbers?

Per the MAWS rev info that I posted below, I don't see any mention of fixing a reset problem.

Thanks,

It is a little buggy for me.  I'm running MAME .119 (I think).  I've played through a few games now and the only game that gives me some bugs is Pac-Man Arrangement.  It resets to the game select screen sometimes after I clear a stage.  The game seems to work otherwise though.  Dig Dug Arrangement is especially fun.

The change made in the 136 cycle that fixed the test mode probably also fixes the resets.  (it might have been made in the actual 136 build, I don't remember)

so I'd say 137 and above would be safest.

I'm running Mame 132 and although I'm not getting any game resets I'm finding that the controls suck!!! They aren't responsive at all like they are in other games. If I make a movement before I get to a passage it moves ok. If I hit a wall and then move to one side it just sits there half the time. Older 4-way classics play perfectly however.

that's more likely a game design issue than an emulation issue.  Modern games have more input lag, it's unfortunate and pisses a lot of people off but often comes as the result of more complex hardware designs and higher level programming.

Just had my best game, I didn't die until level nine or so, the one with the hedges, and then boom.  Too many damn ghosts.

I think the control problem is mainly with how pacman appears to move.  His turns are more graphic and fluid, instead of instant and sharp.

Plays fine for me though, but 5 ghosts is tough (especially that big blue bastard that splits in two...)

To be fair I just tried it with the keyboard only. And it plays fine. Earlier I was playing on my desk PC with a Playstation 2 controller using the analogue stick to move. This works fine for every other game in Mame (so far anyway) but for the arrangements in Namco Classics it sucks. Dunno why.  :dunno

I got to a later level earlier, but the screenshot didn't take.  After awhile the fruit turn into this golden red umbrella looking thingy worth 5000 points, and your score really racks up.

Working on it, when I find time (which is rare).  I played a few games the other night & got in the mide/high 100s pretty handily.  Can't get past that.

Quite a few times, I did get the magic walking stick/cane that turned all of the ghosts into gift boxes for big big points.

I also managed to eat SIX ghosts on one power pill a couple of times.  You get 7250 (or so) for the 6th one.  If you eat the already-blue, bespectacled 5th ghost, then eat the other 4 ghosts, then get the same bespectacled ghost again as he comes out of the monster house, you get big points.

Has anybody figured out the effects of eating the yellow pill?  Pac-Man's mouth seems to open & shut faster, but I don't see any other power-up effect.

Thanks,
-Jason

"golden red umbrella looking thingy" = Galaxian flagship

And yes, they're worth a lot.   ;D

I think I could've done better--I had a few stellar games that reset on me, & I was really getting into a groove the last couple of days, learning how to optimize points, not making as many stupid mistakes, etc.

But 350,560 is my final submission.

(Unless Capri trumps that tonight--I've got a few hours left yet!)

Pong is built into a very early version of mame, which I have somewhere. Hard to see how that was relevant to the mame mission, but its nice to have it handy...

Not really.  I dabbled in a ton of games, rarely got good at any of them.  The only games I could finish on one quarter were Shinobi and SF2 and those were in earlier competitions!
