Title: Simple Jukebox
Post by: BobA on July 19, 2006, 11:57:40 pm
This jukebox was built to look like a piece of furniture.  To this end it was built inside of a 2 door cabinet from IKEA.  No pieces of MDF were cut or mamed in the construction of this juke.

It features a touchscreen monitor so there are no buttons or keypads.
A mood light from IKEA was installed in the upper door.
Bottom door has speaker cloth to allow ventilation and sound from sub woofer.
A rope light that pulses to the sound was installed on the back and bottom of the cab.
A PC fan was installed in the rear of the cab for ventilation.
The PC is turned on and shutdown by a PB on the rear of the cabinet.
The PC 12V controls a relay that controls all other power to the cabinet.
The PC supply in the bottom supplys power for the touchscreen, fan and other circuits.
A WiFi connection allows music to be updated.
Speakers/Amp Logitech X230 32W 2.1 system.

PC is a 800 Mhz PIII with 256K memory and 40G HD
Running W98 SE and SK jukebox

No painting required.  Just a few holes for routing wires and ventilation.

Only thing outstanding is the permanent mounting of the 2 speakers.

Yes the whole thing could have been put into one cab portion but then the screen would not
have been at the right height.   Since the computer fit inside the top cab it was left intact
with the right side panel off to assist in ventilation. It was not wall mounted because I
wanted to keep it portable.

Edit:   Juke was updated with a decased PC
AMD Dual Core 5600 and 1 GB ram, 500 GB HD
to get better performance on multimedia files

Edit:  Juke software changed to E touch by barcrest.

I really like the idea of putting in the mood light. Your project looks really nice!

Thanks for the comments.   I was thinking of moving the speakers to the sides of the cabinet but they are working just fine where they are right now.   The only other change might be to paint the touchscreen black but there are some buttons on the right side of the screen that might not do very well if painted.   Has anyone painted the front of a monitor where buttons were built into the bezel?

A mood light from IKEA was installed in the upper door.

I looked at IKEA's US web page and don't see the mood light.  Is it just a steady light, or does it react to music in some way?  Might it even be a multi-channel color organ?

Inquiring minds...

It has 3 colors of LEDs that can be set to ON or random color combinations.   I can operate it with the same sound module as my rope light to pulse to the music as well.  It was from IKEA CANADA.

One suggestion I'd make is to throw one more of those boxes on top, and mount the monitor flush to it. It doesn't quite look like a piece of furniture with a monitor sitting on top. Other than that though, it's very nice and a great idea.
