Title: |$220 Stargate. Thrilled!
Post by: pippin65 on May 18, 2019, 09:27:35 pm
Was really happy to find this Stargate.  It suffered terribly in a wet environment prior to my adopting her yesterday.  Drove 7 hours round trip to get her.  I think it’s cool how the cheap top and back mushroomed with moisture and formed like a great stuff- like insulation.  An ablative surface for water intrusion if you take my meaning.

At any rate, for $220 bucks I am an ecstatic owner.  It’s “born on date” is 3/3/82

Any tips and tricks, links to Stargate stuff/ things like that is greatly appreciated.

I was the best player in Bay Ridge back in the day.  I think we should/or I will start a Stargate Senior League!

Question: restore electronics? Or gut it, and put an lcd and pi in there.....
Both.

I certainly hope you restore it, but if you don’t, consider the 19-n-1 multi board. There is also a much better Jrok board to check out.

Have a rpi on order and an ipac2   Would really appreciate advice from people that have restored a Stargate before.  Parts list?  links to where to begin? basic setup...

Also, as the top and back are totally shot, can I just cut them out(for replacement) without being in fear that the cab. will fall apart?
Thanks!

In the interest of restoring it,  I’m thinking I need to gut it after/while taking lots of pictures,  then install an rpi/ipac and game as I get the guts  sorted out, and ultimately re-installed.

Show us a pic of the top.

I recently updated my defender cabinet with a 19-n-1. Im real happy with it over a computer.

I’m thinking of just throwing some 1/4 play or paneling on top after hitting it with 3m super 77 adhesive to kinda lock it in....

if the monitor works.. JROK that bad boy.. Either to a MultiWilliams or a dedicated Stargate, would be just like having the real thing, but with hardware that is not 37 years old..

Restore!  Hopefully the monitor works.  I found one for a steal and  was all stoked then found the monitor doesn't work.  So I'm learning how to repair monitors.

Monitor looks like a WG K4600.  Get a cap kit and watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zz9GTUP5Ius

Shoot if anything you were to part this out on EBAY or KLOV you would probably get more than 220 for boards, control panel, bezel, marquee, coin door.  Great find regardless.

Also, Look at the back side of the monitor on the right.  You will see a little coil of wire.  Don't touch it.  If it's broken then you might be hosed on the monitor.  Lots of ways to fix it, but it's PITA.

Restore if possible.

If it was a junk game with no support/parts available, then do whatever. I feel like the classic games like this will hold some value when restored opposed to cabs that say "Jims Docking Station" and 4567 games on it... unless you find someone named Jim whos always wanted one since 1996.

Its like in Wayne's World when Wayne said " I once spend a whole year wanting a MAME cabinet... turns out I was just really bored".

Look at it this way, if you part it out you’ll be helping to restore several other stargate cabinets. I wouldn’t feel bad about doing what you want with the cabinet.

If you're not going to attempt a restore, I'd either resell it to someone who would, or part this out and use the money you make from the parts to buy a better conditioned cabinet, or buy a CNC cut kit.

That wood damage on the top and the bottom is going to be a lot of work to repair.  I'd really only expect someone who is a fan of this game to go the lengths of removing the damaged wood, cutting a "wood patch", bondoing it in, etc...  The top looks crazy as well.  I've seen people separate cabinets to replace damaged panels like this, but those people were taking on a passion project -- grail guys.
