Title: Help: Mortal Kombat all games in one cabinet
Post by: Chuchubonewagon on January 17, 2019, 08:40:27 pm
Hi I have an opportunity to get a mortal Kombat 4 arcade and have always wanted to set one up with a switcher to have all 5 MK games in it.
I have never done anything like this,I have arcades and can do minor things to them and would be comfortable doing more if I had a good guide to follow.

So what I need from you guys is some information.

-Does anyone know of a post or page or video detailing how to do this?

-Do I need additional parts or wiring or is it as easy as putting the boards into the switcher?

Any help is greatly appreciated
Thanks

You could forget about the boards all together and install a PC that plays MAME games, i know little about actual boards.

Really there are only 4. No real reason to run mk3 and umk3 unless you really love the bank stage.

All you need is a 4 in 1 switcher and an mk kick harness condenser.

Only MK1 and MK2 are worth playing.

Thanks everyone that link was very helpful actually going to cost less than I thought. Although I am guessing getting the other game boards won't be as cost friendly.

And I agree MK 1 and 2 would be good for me but the wife loves MK 3 and we'll it is a MK 4 cabinet so...

@Yots, PwNd
@ark, your quote-fu sucks.
@pbj Just MKII
@bonewagon, 4 is the wurst. You could get the 6 game swicther and add War Gods  and Wresltemania

I disagree UMK3 is my personal favorite. MK2 WAS my favorite for YEARS, but recently I've been playing all MK games quite a bit, and UMK3 is a GREAT game.

My personal rank (of the ones I play on my machine)
1. UMK3 arcade
2. MK2 Arcade
3. MK Trilogy PS1
4. MK arcade
5. MK 4 N64
6. MK3 arcade

(The ports for Genesis and SNES I have, but dont really play, they are inferior to the arcade versions).

Opinion: No reason to play UMK3 if you have MKT on your machine unless you never use the extra characters or hate the aggressor bar.

MKGold on Dreamcast is  superior to MK4 on N64. Polygon count was reduced for the N64,  and the DC version adds more characters (and backgrounds) . Even the PC and PSX version have the FMV adds making the N64 port the most gimped.

UMK3 and MKII are the only entries I ever play.

Get the 6 board switcher to be safe.  You never know what you will like in the long run.  It's too bad the game and boards are getting so expensive these days.

I disagree. MK Trilogy IS a good "greatest hits" type of game, hence why I rated it pretty high, but it's still not better than UMK3 imo. Why? For one, UMK3 is an arcade game while trilogy is a PS1 game. Arcade games have superior graphics and gameplay, plus no load times (like with PS1). It's just a more authentic MK experience imo.

On top of that, I would add that UMK3 IS the third game (or adventure, story, etc). While Trilogy is a "greatest hits" like I said before. So it's just a different game experience imo.

I'm not bashing Trilogy, it's one of the best MK games I've ever played, but UMK3 IS the BEST game imo. Better roster than MK2, better graphics as well. Which MK2 is a classic, but UMK3 is perfect imo.

My machine wont run Dreamcast unfortunately. N64, PS1, and Sega Model 2 are the "newest" systems on my machine. But I'll take your word on the Dreamcast MK game, 👍

If you are going to run MKT then you might as well throw MK9 on there.  Unless you really, really wanted to play as Motaro it's just a modern remake of the game.  A few of my mods make it even more like MKT.

MK2 was my favorite for years, but looking back UMK3 holds up better to modern fighters.  Not that it would have anything to do with which is your fav, I'm just sayin...  MKT has severe balance issues for the hardcore crowd, but seeing as how I suck I still like it.  I agree with Malenko btw... might as well put War Gods and Wrestemania on there as they are part of the MK family.... ok maybe skip War Gods.

I'm going to try and revamp my Mame cab from it's long slumber.  It's going to be mk themed this time, so I'm going to throw everything on there.  MK vs DC, Injustice, the Xbox/PS2 era games... ect.

How are you going to get MK vs DC working? I think it only appeared on PS3 and X360 and it's not emulated on either. Hoping I'm mistaken.
Also, what mods for MK9 are you talking about?

He might be thinking of Injustice, both of those were released on PC.

Yea I thought that too but he mentioned Injustice separately.
MK Vs DC is the only missing MK game from my cab. Would love to get it added if there's a way.

I've got an xbox one so I can just stream it to the cab.  I'll probably do that with the newer games as well.

Many of my mods are in the software forum...... somewhere.

Hmm... well I take that back.  I assumed that the MK games ran in backwards compatibility mode because the support is really good on the xbox but apparently none of the MK games are on the list.  Maybe because they were made when it was still owned by Midway?

I might be able to swing a PS2 emulator for the xbox era games, but Mk vs DC is out.  :(

PCSX2 handles MK 5, 6, and 7, Steam for 9 and 10. The competitionist in me wants MK vs DC, which for some reason is considered MK 8, but I've never played it and I think I remember hearing it's pretty bad. Oh well.

T-rated MK game.

I'd go out of my way to make sure that trash was not on my cabinet.

The purpose of putting together an anthology isn't to only put the best games, but to put the whole collection so they can be experienced.  MK vs DC Universe is the transition game from Midway to NRS and also the first game where the MK team tackled DC characters, so it has historical significance at least.  It's the only MK game I don't own, so yeah, not the biggest fan.

That's ok man.  I'll pick a copy up if I ever have the notion to hook up my 360 just to play it, which is pretty unlikely.

I know the feeling.  Every time I get a good start on clearing stuff out I get over-whelmed or side tracked and give up.  Took a buttload of stuff to goodwill this fall.  Like 4 car loads and that was just the excess linens... haven't gotten to the actual stuff yet.

MK2 is great, but MK2+ is superior and everyone should be running it in their cabs if they can.. Stay tuned for MK+ and UMK3+

Is it difficult to unlock the characters? That's the most interesting aspect to me. How do you unlock them?

way back when public beta 1 released I made a video on how to unlock the hidden characters. All the info is still valid except for the stuff I said about the shadows flying in front of the moon on the Pit 2 stage. Those percentages have been adjusted. The bosses are a lot harder to unlock. You have to do very well on survival mode with improved AI enabled.

I kinda agree. The biggest appeal (for me anyways) is being able to play MK2 with Noob, Smoke, Shao Khan and Kintaro. If its ridiculously difficult to do, I might as well stick with regular MK2. Same goes for UMK3 (which is my personal fav of the series). If we cant play as all of the characters (or it's hard to accomplish), then I'll stick with UMK3 for arcade and MK Trilogy on the PS1 (because that game comes with ALL characters unlocked from the get go). Which I have trilogy on my arcade machine as well. Although, I still prefer UMK3 and MK2 due to them being actual arcade games instead of "ports." I'm just saying its THOSE characters being playable that got me interested, new fatalities and what not are nice, but not really all that important if I'm honest.
