what's with all the dust washers showing?
what's with all the dust washers showing?Growing up every arcade I played at had the dust washers on top, so regardless of whether they're supposed to be on top or not, to me it feels more like an arcade machine with them on top. I have always spun them with my thumb when I'm waiting between levels/rounds/etc., so it brings back a more realistic memories to me having them on top.
note the dust washer underneath ;)Lol, love the dust washers :)
oh, Patrickl, you just HAVE to post your galaga control panel (",)
Lol, yeah I guess the PocketGalaga is the only working "cab" that I have :) I have no better pictures of it though (other than maybe the one with the cat (http://arcade.laweb.nl/PocketGalaga/PocketGalaga+Odie.jpg))
patrickl, i actually meant the bottom of your two pics (",). have you got another pic of that? your full sized one is nice too though.
My work in progress; getting close!! Half a yo-yo for my homemade hard drive spinner... Illuminated buttons and trackball with LEDs.
Figured I'd throw my two panels up as well.
The first Missile command version uses two 4/8 switchable ultimarc T-stick plus with balltops and a 3 inch happ trackball running an ultimarc interface. It connects to the cab with two large bolts and can be swapped out in 1 min or so. I matched the missile command layout and added the T stick and extra buttons for the most classic games.
The second is my Robotron model using Groovygame gears interface and two 47-ways. The spinner is a GGG. I wanted to make a perfect controller for the standard classic button games such as asteroids/defender. I'm a huge tempest fan so the tempest knob and button placement pretty much match that control panel as well. The graphics were printed by mame marquee (awesome job)
I like that dual deck, good way to get that all in one control panel. The reach to the track ball is about 12 inches. My kids and I play tested Marble Madness for hours and it worked great – the placement felt very natural.
one question though:
Is the trackball annoying being on the top deck or do you not notice any difference with it.
Partybox Control Panel
This is the control panel Tim has graciously been building for me. I figured I would go ahead and post it since it is pretty much complete. I did the artwork myself from vectors taken from localarcade.com, and all the other hard work was done by Timoe :) The panel is around 17 inches deep, by 29 inches wide.I've never seen anyone build a control panel out of a Pumpkin Carving Kit, you go McGuyver!

Almost ashamed to post it giving some of the amazing entries in this thread. Still very much a WIP but it's on the backburner for the mo. Should prolly spend less time on the arcade controls forum and more time on the arcade controls.... ;)
Happ gear all round with a 4 way and q-bert diagonal stick. I've a star wars controller and steering wheel ready to go but deciding how to fit them is a pain.
here's mine. plays a *lot* of different types of games. see the link in my signature for lots of details. the photo is a little bit out of date: the 8-ways are now sporting shorter red plastic wico handles instead of the taller metal ones in the picture.

Robonut,
I have filtered through this list a think that your layout would suit my needs. I am on my second panel and have noted some minor problems with my design. Yours seems to address these.
Any chance of you PMing me with the dimensions and layout measurements of your cutout sheet?

click the link in my signature. scroll to the "download" section at the bottom of the page. there are two pdfs there.
one is a single large page, which you can take to kinko's and print out on a large sheet of paper. you can also edit this, if you have access to adobe illustrator.
the other is "tiled" into a bunch of letter-sized pages. you can print this out on any printer and tape the pages together.
let me know how it works out for you.
also, if you or anyone else like my layout and want to have your panel made by slikstik, they've retained the cad file and can make it for you easily.
Here's a picture of my latest project, a Christmas gift for my daughter.
That's cute!! :) you do realise that you're going to walk in one day and find your daughter and her friends kickking the hell out of each other on the most gory and violent beat up games they can find don't you.. ROFLMAO :laugh2:
Here you go,... this thread needs something to bring the quality level down a bit.

Not at all!! That's a nice neat clean layout and very well finished.... I like it, in fact I'd be proud to have built that.
Best Regards,

The rocky horror time warp control panel is my favorite. Great job on that.
Great pics! Keep em coming!
My sis did the artwork for this one...I keep telling myself I need to take another pic now that it's finished. She also designing me some door art based on the same theme so I can lose the stickies that are on there now...

Maybe some glasses would help you see that he's not done wiring, hell, I don't think a single wire is connected to that keywiz yet. At least let him finish before you talk smack about his workmanship.
Ha1ex,
Nice work on keeping the themed artwork clean and simple. Looks like a good project in the works.
Hi, this is my first control panel - Defender Station.Sweet, I love duct tape - glad to see it getting used 'round here.
OK. I'll try to fix it ;DNo, please... I was being serious.

Zip-Strips and a little planning would help with your wiring.
Does it really matter what the wiring looks like? If it looks good from the outside who cares how clean the inside is. The only problem I see with some "sloppy wiring" is that it is a pain in the *** to replace/fix when the time comes. CP looks great! From one Cheesehead to another :)

Finally got my CP fully built and attached. I haven't gotten a chance to put art on it yet, but man it plays nice!

Just need to figure out some art for it now
I think you put your MAME cab where Street Fighter 3 machines go.
A little side note question: what kind of wire do you use? I heard 18 guage and bought a bunch but it seems too thick.
My stab at a control panel:How did you create that control panel? It looks like poured and not actually acrylic panels? Sweet work. Just curious how you created that!!!

I didn't mean to imply the IDE cable was too thin to work properly, it just is a pain crimping disconnects onto 28-32 gauge as opposed to 22-24 gauge.

The artwork is just a cool poster I trimmed to size, then trimmed again once tacked down with spray-on craft glue (left tacky so easily removable). I really think this was the best way to go, esp. for my first build. I was going wacko trying to plan every little thing.

This started out as a non-working Ms Pacman, now is a mame multi-game machine. My goal was to have a Ms Pacman/Galaga machine, similar to the new reunion games.

hi folks,It cannot be done without ghosting if you are talking about action buttons. If you just want 18 inputs and some admin buttons (two joys, and 6 buttons per), it can be done but it's really not worth the effort.
looking for a diagram to hack a keyboard to be able to control 24 buttons on my cocktail cabinet. one dude did it earlier so i know it can be done now i am just looking for guidance.

Well my 1st build cab is now on the great big scrap heap in the sky (well actually it is in limbo after having its guts ripped out but its on its way) but I can least pay a little homage to it by posting a picture here:

Here is my (3rd) CP. It has 2x 49ways with aluminum bat handles, 2x LS-30s, arkanoid spinner and happs trackball. It also sports built-in cup holders. No artwork yet (Im having trouble finding someone willing to let me pay them to do it) but eventually will have some type of ninja theme. If you can't make out the marquee, the name of the arcade is 'Baby Shoguns'. The CP is loosely based on a Slik Stik Quad modified to work with a UA2 cab.
Tek
I'm not typically a fan of the larger panels, but Tek, you did it right... The panel wrapping around the cab is a great touch and ties it all together; good job!

Noting too fancy here, it was a NeoGeo conversion metal CP that I put a color photo under with new plexi. Wico joysticks, happ buttons. Maybe someday I'll get the whole thing done with a CP from mamemarquees and replace the black stuff with the entire image. Either way, it looks cool and was fairly cheap and easy to do

Here's my first fully completed control panel. Details:Looks pretty slick. Love how you incorporated the steering wheel in the CP. Unfortunately it's on the wrong side :P
Pole Position wheel hardware wtih Super Sprint wheel - interfaced with Oscar mouse hack,
Hard Drivin' 4-speed shifter + 3 buttons interfaced with IPAC.
Here is my controls, it's a modded x-arcade. New Sanwa joysticks are on it's way. Here is more pics:Nice way to mod that x-arcade panel into something that fits with the rest of the cab. Why didn't you integrate the CP a bit more with the cabinet though?

Something like ahikibarashop????
Just finished my new controls today. I have done the artwork in Illustrator myself. I have used a x-arcade PCB and 2 sanwa balltop joysticks. Hope you like it.
I have almost finished my control panel. The only thing left to do is wire it up!!! ;Dnice i like , can't go wrong with star trek
I love the way the poster came out. The edge where the poster is short will be covered with some trim when the cabinet is done.

spicolli, Will you please measure your control panel and give the measurements? I love it!
And what is that symbol on the middle, it really gives it character.
You mentioned in another thread that you are making a mark II? Can you share details on that?
Quarter thats sweet. Repalce those buttons with Novagems
Thanks for the reply-yes it is a little rough lol-believe me i'm no carpenter but my housemate was pushing me to finish it hence the rushed look.
Like i said most of the bits we already had-including the 19" lcd monitor-so it is definately a 'budget build'-and i've learnt a lot so far on this one which i can utilise on mk2 which will hopefully have a larger screen and proper cp with overlay etc. i was planning on getting some perspex etc. for the cp but was worried about cutting the holes?
Also the reason the monitors where it is is because i made the cp to be able to pivot up so it would fit through doors etc. but doesnt quite alas-oh well. ;D
It's a SlikStik, nothing I made. All I did was take all the buttons etc off and add the overlay to it.

Oh. A fold-up panel. I'd wondered about the inside of the 'hood'. Well, I don't know how often anyone else would move such a thing, but if it were me I'd just make it detachable for the rare case needing it.
It's a SlikStik, nothing I made. All I did was take all the buttons etc off and add the overlay to it.
Behold my Giant Balls
The original black 4.5" diameter balls were replaced with the same-size flame colored candlepin bowling balls.
The stick and buttons are mounted on a hard plastic 1/2" cutting board that was easy to carve with a dremel tool. They replace the original plastic "play select" screen of the Atari Football game. All very reversible, I still have the original parts (leave me alone!)
Not incredibly interesting but very functional. I am planning on tripping it out with LEDs next month and will post the new image once it is completed. I don't like to put an overlay on my CP since it isn't really a theme machine or anything.
My firest attempt. Not nearly as pro as some of the stuff on here, but I am in Tasmania, so I did the best I could!
My latest, slanted cp; was 20 degrees too much?
2 player with 2" trackball. Not enough room for really getting into golden tee, but great for most games I have tried with it.
Thankfully Andy has the new trimless trackball which is very nice and I can't wait to install it. http://www.ultimarc.com/trackball.html (http://www.ultimarc.com/trackball.html)
Routing out the bottom and mounting it with out the trim plate was a bear, but very worth it.
24"x9"x6"deep 20degree angle
A lot of blood and sweat has gone into this sucker...
Well i have been crawling around for some time and just got around to getting my CP together. I love the supercade type of double decker CP! So i looked and looked until i felt i could take some of the most usable ideas and put them into one! its all wired up and ready to go i just haven't had time to program it yet! i should have time soon! ;)
Well let me know what ya all think!
I have lots more pics of the build up! I plan on posting more soon!!!
It's nice to see another swappable panel design, Dan! And a wood one at that. You might have noticed mine a few posts back, a swappable sheet metal panel. Swappable panels do have their downsides, but I love the uncluttered look, and in my case, it is only slightly oversized compared to the original cp (deeper than original, but same width).
Now you just need an overlay. ;D
Here's mine. I wanted to be able to play any and all games so I went a little overboard...

I'm interested in this as well. I'm trying figure out my CP design. I just have no idea what games
use spinners & track balls. I'm just guessing this is a touchy subject considering the roms. But even
a list of dedicated machine layouts would be nice. I see a reason for me to start a new online Database!
I like the SF layout a lot but I am not sure that if I like that the buttons and joysticks cover up the artwork of the characters.
Yup. Way too busy.
Thanks for the dimensions.
Revenge of the FRANKENPANEL!
Now I know a lot of you may have negative feelings towards the idea of a frankenpanel,
but I figured it was the only solution when designing my cp.
The aim was to be able to play as many games as possible with a single static panel. And of course this had to be within reason (so no steering wheels, flight yokes etc. - Light guns may come down the track but they're not really part of a cp anyway). I've seen examples of swappable panels done pretty well, but the idea just didn't appeal to me.
So what was required to cover as many different combinations as possible without getting ridiculous (well it may be ridiculous - you'll have to tell me):And of course, this means that the design is a 2 player only console. My logic for this was that it would be pretty rare that I's have more than 2 people around the same machine wanting to play the same game at the same time. The machine would have to be (even) bigger, and it would get really cramped. So I went for a maxed-out 2 player cp.
- Trackball [I used an ultimarc u-trak USB]: A must (esp. for marble madness, there's just no getting away from it). Plus this also doubles as a half-assed substitute for an analog joystick and lightgun crosshair on 1 player games since the panel doesn't have an analog joystick or lightguns (although an analog joystick can be incorporated - see below)
- 2 8way/4way switchable joysticks with 6 buttons in standard street fighter type layout[I used Suzo 500 j's and happ buttons]: These should be standard. Being able to switch to 4way is important (i wasn't sure it would be) for a lot of old classics. I chose ones switchable from below the panel because its pretty easy to get to the underside of my panel
- 2 spinners and 2 trigger joysticks [I used ultimarc spintrak spinners USB and HAPP heavy-duty 8 way trigger sticks]: Ok, the idea with the combination of these I will now explain. At least 1 spinner is a must (tempest, arkanoid etc.), I think we can all agree on that. Plus lets not forget that the spinner doubles for a reasonable steering wheel. So why 2 spinners? Well there are some good 2 player 2 spinner games (e.g. warlords), but it probably wouldn't be worth it for them alone. But with the steering wheel element, it means you've got 2 steering wheels and so now you can play 2 player super sprint. For me that would be an open and shut case, but there are even more reasons. With 2 trigger sticks and 2 spinners, you've also got all 2 player rotary joystick games covered (ikari warriors, midnight resistance etc.) And let's not forget you need 1 trigger stick and spinner combo to play tron and discs of tron anyway. Hopefully you're convinced.
So anyway, after that rant, here's the panel design.
Yup. Way too busy.
Thanks for the dimensions.
It is, but whatever. It's interesting to see a panel that isn't very deep, front to back. I've thought of this myself, and am curious how it feels not having any room to rest hands and arms? Also, is there a project thread or blog?
I've seen examples of swappable panels done pretty well, but the idea just didn't appeal to me.
So anyway, after that rant, here's the panel design.

What's that front end you've got there? Looks pretty slick.
I challenge anyone to post a plainer (is that a word?) or more boring panel and cabinet than this. Complete with default lame marquee and NO art anywhere whatsoever.

I finally finished my control panel last week.
From left to right:
Happ competition, Ultimarc 360, TurboTwist 2, U-trak, Ultimarc 360, Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, Happ competition.....................
Ok just finished my first attempt at refitting my Turnarcades slimline mini cab with a new CP, I modified both the original 2 player CP and this one to be easy to change with d-sub connectors to link the lower buttons. Still some refinements to do but I just wanted to prove that you could squeeze a trackball into a small cab. At last my daughters can play Centipede as it should be played!
Many thanks to ultimarc for the gear - also trialing the mag stick for the top changeable 4-8 way options
Cheers

Ha, cute name. Really interesting that the trackball looks white in it illumination, yet appears light purple in the reflection off the glass.
I love the graphics but why not undermount that trackball plate?
Alright, since I love "Panel Porno" as much as the next BYOACer, I figure I should contribute what I've got. This is great all in one place.Does anyone have the artwork for his first panel he posted? I tried dropping him a message but he hasn't been on in a month... This is pretty much what i'm looking for when it comes to making my own layout, with a few minor modifications, but I do want to go with the Atomic Mame theme and this is perfect!
Definitely room for everyone.

Here is a preliminary drawing of a cp i'm working on.. The design is based on a stock deminsions of a 4pl cp from NBA JAM TE. (37 X 14) The button layout is similar to NBA JAM, The only differance is the addition of 7 buttons to the middle two sticks. And if you notice the bottom 4 is layed out Neo-Geo style so it can double. Even the Neo color scheme is used. (colors of course are subject to change as I am not totally sold on them yet) I left out coin buttons and other gadgets. I want to keep it simple and money functional.I like it, can you tell me what program you used to make the layout with though? I've been browsing all over and that looks like what I'm looking for...
Let me know what you think.. Thanks.
I've added a Turbo Twist spinner at the top. I actually had to take the dremel to the power button in back to get it to fit. Overall I like this position because when playing D.O.T. I can shoot with my thumb while turning the nob.
GoddTodd
what the effect would look like if you took a normal opaque pushbutton, mounted an LED in the bottom, and the drilled 4 holes on the sides of the button plunger, just below the top.
The idea would be to let light spill out in 4 beams from the sides of the button so it would'n't be near as bright, but might make for an interesting effect.
Here's my version.... even under bright flash it glows quite brightly, for full details on how I did this see my own project thread (it's a bit long for this thread on CP examples).

Completed most of the construction over Christmas when I was off for a few days. Been collecting parts for over three years and wanted to get this done.
It's a two-deck design inspired by the supercade panel, but I don't have anything installed up there yet. I'll eventually add a spinner and analog flightstick to the upper deck.
And the artwork to go with it.....
And as an update, here's the finished items....still need to put the door on the front to close it all up nicely.
As mentioned previously, will add a flight stick and possibly a spinner to the currently unused upper deck. Thinking about a separate panel for mounting steering wheels, pedals, and shifters and want a couple of lightguns as well.
Joysticks are used Ikari Warrior style rotary 8-way joysticks. Trackballs are both Xarcade 3-inch trackballs....I've been very pleased with both.
MY 1st 2 player control panel - 2 red top Wico's, 4 way Original Pacman joystick a must, Apache Push and pull spinner with Happ 2 button trigger joystick, eventually will make the Trigger joystick detachable so I can play Golden Tee but Im into the classic's so not in a hurry. Defender,Astroids, track and field and vanguard button layout. Im old school so fighter's i will play but not much. 1-blue bat stick 4 way for Qbert and Congo Bongo mounted 45 degrees. Rotary joystick not played much and 8 way top fire happ joystick next to the trigger joystick works great for Vindicators and tank games. Let me know your thoughts for a 2 player CP basically play alone so i would say its a one player cab.
Hanoi: Marble Madness (which I love) requires two trackballs. So does Cabal (which is okay).
Check out the Wicos And the original pacman Leaf switch its a must for pacman, Happs are good but for speed pacman the original is amazingly accurate which if you play speed pacman you know what im talking about.

Very clean!
Have you checked out u360's for those middle two sticks? They are fantastic for this sort of thing because they can be remapped to work like a 2/4/8 stick, analog stick qbert stick, you name it.
Finally... It is functional and ready to show here. The cp for my 1st build. 4 player 'Fusion' cab.
Good grief that's messy wiring! Hope you never have to trace an electrical problem. :-\ Cool artwork though.

Thought I would post mine. Layout is basic and everything I need. Mostly NeoGeo games and Street Fighter 4. I know the over lay is played out but for now it stays until I get around to designing my own. For only $55 to have it printed and shipped, I may just change it monthly :lol
Looks good but i dont see any trigger stick for tron games Other wise nice job

woooow it looks awesoooome! you said - maybe not the best out there, but i personally like style on these pics. it is really cool.
I've had my cab for 2 years now and just this week the artwork I used for my cab has finally came in. Right now I only have the control panel covered in vinyl. My sides are covered with printed xerox paper so I can get a feel of how everything comes together. I am a fan of the Kentucky Wildcats...and I am a fan of Homer J. Simpson. So I thought I'd incorporate both ideas into my cab. It may be cheesey, but it's mine and I have no plans of getting rid of it.
Here you go, that reminds me, I should submit this to the examples page!

Castlevania Control panel enjoy!
My first message on this board, although I've been reading for years and gathering help from all your work...thanks for the inspiration.
Here's mine...with a Defender theme - although I have no Defender button placements - I played mostly Atari 2600 which was way simpler...
Three Ms Pacman Reunions (a mistake I my part, maybe, thinking they had a different feel than the Happs Super 8-ways) I converted the base of two with a round 8-way plate.
Happs Blue Glow Trackball - still gotta wire the 'glow' up, but I'm afraid I'll burn out my power supply with the coin door lights already sucking out juice...
Turbo Twist Spinner- Nice!
Two Act Labs Arcade Guns - I drilled out two buttons so wiring can enter smoothly into the cabinet...the holsters are Home Depot "U" bolts that need to be painted black but I'm afraid they are too smooth and end up looking like crap.
Special thanks to Kneivel (spelling?) Wow!

I've been planning out a defender cab with a 4 player console added on for a while now. I designed it so that when the 4 player module was attached, it would blend in with the original original defender control panel but would accommodate the extra controllers such as the spinners and trackball. At first I thought it was way too much, but the severity of it is starting to grow on me and I think I'm going to keep it as the final design.

I'd like to know your opinion on the setup a year from now, for sure. Very unconventional, but I love the artwork on your control panel!

Nice. Although the angle is too shallow. Needs to be 45 degrees.
Four - that is the last one!!

Had a long think about mine to get the best coverage of all the game variations. Settled on this.Galaxian and Asteroids? Man you forgot the most important finger space shooter.....PHOENIX!
The 6 red buttons cover most games with the 2 blue ones doubling as left right movement for classic shooters like asteroids and galaxians giving the choice of button or stick for the purists.
The 2 blue plus the red next to it offer the 3 buttons required for track n field.
The blue nearest the stick being the defender thumb button for reverse.

Couple of questions, Griff...
1) I noticed you've got your ground daisy chained to the NO terminals instead of the COM terminals (on this and LMPM). I know in this particular application, it doesn't really matter as long as you're consistant in your wiring... But is there a particular reason for this?
2) What happened to your LED lit dustwashers? I don't recall seeing/hearing much about them after you initially lit them up. It looks like there's some cut RGB wires coming out of that joystick base. They look just like they did when you installed the sticks. Did they just not get wired up?

Say hello to my pimped out Battlestation 2!
I kind of agree. I really wanted all black, but also want ease of understanding the buttons. Can you get black buttons that say, "coin" and "shift"? Actually, at this point, I am at peace with the wacky colors on the otherwise sleek build.

My nostalgia comes from the NES 8)
I've wanted to build a Mame cabinet for the last decade and finally took the plunge last month. It's a slow process since I'm doing it in my limited off time but so far it's coming along nicely. There are a few changes from your standard cabinet. The first being my very tiny house needs a very efficient cabinet design. I still wanted 4-players so the majority of the time was spent on testing layouts where 4 people could play on a panel not much larger than your standard 2 player. My marque is also not a traditional one, more on that later. Hopefully I'll have it finished by end of summer. Oh and all of the white buttons and track ball are RGB LED's which should be a joy to wire up.

How do people get their wiring so neat and tidy and organised? Every time I try it just winds up looking like the creature from the black lagoon. It's terribly distressing.

For starters, don't use pre-made/pre-crimped wires, or you'll just end up with loads of exces wire length.
Best idea I ever got was from Knievel. It's solid-core doorbell wire. 4 bux a roll (I think 75 ft. per roll) in multiple colors. The solid core stays put since it's less flexible then stranded wire. Just don't use it where the wire will see a lot of bending, otherwise the inner wire will break:
??? Sounds like you're starting at the encoder -- start at the microswitch.
??? Sounds like you're starting at the encoder -- start at the microswitch.
No I was more referring to the pre-made ground daisy-chains, which you can't easily shorten. I used f-crimp connectors, which also provide strain relief, so I had to start at the switch.
What are these called and what are they used for?
But why would you use these on a control panel, instead of direct wiring?IIRC one guy used them for temporary single color LED button wiring while he figured out (and gathered the funds for) an RGB LED button setup.
^ Love the concept and way you made the borders for the various controls (esp. the trackball). But why does the textured part of the art stop so premature of the bottom edge of the panel?

It looks great! How quick was the turnaround with Luciano? I'm planning on going with him. I wish I had gone with LED buttons but it seems to expensive with 4 players and 8 buttons each. Maybe some day I'll upgrade.

If I ever rebuild it I'm going to scale the speaker size down (they are awesomely loud, but didn't look quite how I was expecting) and swap the button LEDs out for dimmable RGB ones, as the white is almost overwhelmingly bright.

They give the light a vibrant pastel look.

What manner of sorcery do I see in the form of a display in the center top portion of your panel. Could it bemore of thy coveted bling?
Thanks. Took me a while to get settled on a marquee design but I'm very happy with it.
Getting it attached was another story. Seeing as it was my first build, there were a ton of mistakes I made. But in the end it all turned out good.

It's the controller board from an LG FA-3000AWE sound system. I gutted it, screwed the dolby/dts decoder+amp to the inside of the front of the cabinet, ran the cable up to where the board is, and made a sub box for the tiny subwoofer (seeing as I had to destroy the stock box to get the parts out).
Putting a 5.1 system in an arcade cabinet is a little bit of overkill, but the sound system was sitting in the closet gathering dust, and probably wasn't going to see use for anything else, so I figured why not? I've got an Auzentech soundcard outputting everything in DTS 5.1 and it sounds pretty awesome.
Here's a couple photos from the construction phase showing how I got the board in. (http://imgur.com/a/dm5ib#0)
That uber-cool. There is no such thing as over kill in this hobby. :-)

This is the best work I've done to date I think. Much better job when I take my time. Anywho..
Don't mind the painters tape. It was to remind me the orientation of the joystick.
The 2 kades were super easy to work with. Next time I will choose an encoder before committing to a design.

This is a project that has been a year in the works. I just finished my entire build last weekend and I'll be posting the build in the Project Announcements here in a bit. First, I thought I'd share my control panel. So many others before me have inspired me, I hope I can inspire someone else.

How do people get their wiring so neat and tidy and organised? Every time I try it just winds up looking like the creature from the black lagoon. It's terribly distressing.

First time poster, long time lurker. A very epic 9 year thread by the way. Very educational.
I wanted to ask about the number of buttons: you drilled for 8 player buttons but covered over the holes so there's only 6. I've been wondering about 6 vs 8 player buttons. How many games really going to use the 8 player buttons? Is that mostly for console games? Did you drill the extra holes for future expansion? Just curious.
I'm working on creating my own control panel. Very slow going. Almost losing patients (although I've never done anything remotely similar to this and it's only been 2 1/2 months).
How do you go about installing cpo art that has designs around the buttons and joystick like you have? I am making my cpo design and i have art around mine as well but was wondering how to line it up with my control panel. Any help?

megamoze: that looks like what I'm trying to accomplish, layout wise -- any chance you have dimensions or blueprints I could play with? I like how neat the layout looks, and how you economize on buttons! <3

Not sure if I ever posted the control panel from my ARTIFACT Game Museum cab... Here we go!
Thanks to all in the community who helped me back in the day in 2007 when I was planning and building it.
I miss it..... Maybe I should build another project.......

What are the dimensions of your CPs? I will be using almost the same exact controls and layout. Looking to fit mine on a 23"x13" panel, but not sure if it will fit. Both of yours look close, though.
(two players, 6 buttons each, trackball, spinner, and some admin/coin/start buttons)
Hi,
Not sure if I can post this here,
because it's not exactly an arcade control panel,
but here is the pinball controller I've made :

Hello
First time user here. In februar I decided to build by own arcade control panel. Here is my first attempt to build it.
HelloI really like this, and have been thinking about something similar. I like the idea of being able to move the control panel around independently of a standalone stand-up arcade given my circumstances (and for practice).

I have a couple questions -
What are the buttons on the front?
Can you speak to the built-in speakers?
Is this wireless?
Very nice work.
I'm in awe and I think yours is a template I'd like to follow. Do you have more pictures that you can post from other angles and inside? This is super impressive.HelloI really like this, and have been thinking about something similar. Very nice work.
Buttons on the front are actually speaker amplifier. I control speaker with it.
Currently I am using raspberry pi 3 as an engine for arcade control. I made it in such a way, that I can use it also to control external PC if needed. In the back I have a switch which controls
what my internal USB hub controls. In the back I have a connector for external USB which can be connected to the PC. If i want independent behaviour then I just switch in the back to control
internal raspberry pi.
Control panel is stored in a special place in the living room, when not in use.
I use internal speaker exclusively as even that HDMI audio is an option. I just prefer it more and i have control over loudness at the tip of the finger.
Also I made a separate stand for external monitor. At my work i got an old (broken !!!!) monitor. I found out, that only control panel was broken so I ordered control panel for monitor panel from China and made
enclosure for the panel so everything is now wood. It really looks cool and I use it when my main 55 inch TV is not available. This is also the reason I built in the speakers as monitor did not have any
audio capabilities.
For network capabilities I currently use network cable, which is connected in the back in special passthrough network connector. I probably could use wireless capabilities of the raspberry pi, but I did not try this feature.
In the future I will replace raspberry pi with more powerful mini PC. Currently I have my eyes set to HADES CANYON NUC from intel, as its measurement fit perfectly for the space I have inside arcade control panel.
Arcade control panel can be opened from the front and is using some magnets to keep it shut. I made special handles for carrying control panel around the house.
The whole control panel took me about 3 month. I did everything from woodworking to installation and programming. I am just geek about this things. If you look at the picture you could see control panel sitting on little
coffee table which I made and is made from the same material I used for control panel. Unfortunately I did not do any documentation about process of building this stuff, but I am open to discuss it.

Well that makes sense, sure.
It did take work, and I suppose it could be construed as funny for one to put effort into something like that.
As funny as someone putting effort into any of this stuff could be, as it's all frivolity and pointless in the end I suppose.
I'm not sure what that has to do with my use of the word curate, however. My initial response to your post was wondering what you found funny, and you didn't state what you just said, but instead chose to point at my use of a word. To that end, if one were to be pedantic, one could say my use of the word wasn't, entirely, idiomatically correct. But when did forums about posting pictures of arcade cabinets become grammar or vocabulary quizzes?

With him how? In what way? For what reason?

That is pretty snazzy. Did you drill the glass and then have it tempered?
And Spy Hunter and Tron for good measure - (That Moon Patrol is actually an 8-way stick, the game was all original outside, mame inside ;D I built that for a friend though)

My question is the template I'm thinking of using the 3 and 4 player positions the joystick is cocked to the side so basically the up and down isn't directly in line with the screen as you will be standing at more of a slight angle in reference to the screen. How is that as far as playing is involved is it odd . When technically going right you would actually be moving the sick down and to the right in relation to the screen. The FAQ has some good info on this topic.
I don't know why the pics are stretched horizontally. It appears that you can download the pic and look at it as it should be.AFAIK it's a combination of EXIF rotation and the images being over 1024 pixels wide.

what's with all the dust washers showing?
ahh, the age old debate. I prefer mine "under", but can see the argument to have them "over".
My Omega Race multiwilliams panel was under with Wicos, but I had to put them on top for Ultimarc Mag Stiks as they cannot be removed from the shafts. :(
